Best £4.0m FPL defenders for 2023/24

It’s that time of the year again when we commence our exhaustive trawl through the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list – and we begin with the best £4.0m defenders.

We start here for a reason.

While nothing has changed with the FPL rules, chips and scoring system, there’s been a bit of a shift in the pricing structure.

Usually, we’re scrabbling round for one or two £4.0m playing FPL defenders at best. A lot of the time, these budget gems – such as John Lundstram, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tino Livramento – only announce themselves during pre-season.

But this year, perhaps to counter price rises for the likes of Erling Haaland (£14.0m), the games-makers have made it much easier to find £4.0m options with strong chances of game-time.

BEST £4.0M DEFENDERS: THE PROMOTED TEAMS

All of the stand-out picks in the £4.0m bracket, at present, come from the three newly promoted clubs.

A quarter of the 56 defenders currently in FPL’s reduced-to-clear aisle ply their trade for Burnley, Luton Town or Sheffield United:

Let’s have you magic beans/hidden gems? And a reason, if you can be bothered….

Not exactly a hidden gem but Bruno at 8.5 has more potential than Rashford at 9

I agree with this. I've also got Maddison who very few seem to have. I think he'll have a great season and is exactly what Spurs have been missing

Yeah Maddison will do really well IF he can stay fit. Son also capable of 250 points at 9m is decent

Chance creation matters for nothing when you have donkeys finishing! If they buy Kane I think Bruno is priced favourably over Rashford, but his chance creation counts for zero if they dont.

Even if his chances are finished off at this moment in time it’s likely it’s a Rashford finishing them.

People buy Bruno because of pens and 1 season he had under Ole.

He's someone definitely in my thoughts, but unlikely to start with him for GW1 because of the fixtures.

With Tonali coming in it likely means Joelinton and Willock will play LCM / LW together (sometimes Maximin on LW too) which means Isak will play CF more than on the LW.

This in turn reduces the gametime Wilson is likely to see. Just my opinion, we will have to see who else we sign and what Eddie fancies.

    Great article as usual!

FPL really screwed up combining pricing up Haaland and cuts in lots of other areas. Considering last season's strong template they had a good chance to make the manager's really think about their teams. 14M is fair pricing for Haaland, but they could have increased it easily without affecting ownership much. Reducing prices of so many others actually has helped the template cause. Double premium is easily gettable, even a ThreeMium looks decent, if not great, on paper. FPL have gone the route, disappointingly, of making 1-2 players in each position premium and rest mid to low.

Footnote: Haaland had a grand total of 9 more points that Kane last season.

Should have clarified: It has made the case for a Halaand backed template more easily achievable. With so many players reduced by 0.5 it's not difficult to get to Haaland.

Hojlund rumours are the only ones with any credibility. I think they're tight for cash atm given the emergency keeper situation, unless the Saudi's come in and clear their debt payments. I'm unsure, but I think that would give them far more FFP wiggle room.

We can mostly agree we want to target Arsenal clean sheets. Therefore isn't it better to get Ramsdale over Gabriel? You are more likely to rotate a defender if needed than a keeper. So its better to have Ramsdame and a 4.5 defender than a 4.5 keeper and Gabriel.

Goalkeepers get Bonus points taken away if their team is very attacking, which Arsenal is. A team which is strong-ish defensively and hopeless in attack is your best bet for BPs as their forwards and mids are less likely to get it. Gabriel is an attacking threat too.

    4. Zimo
      • 6 Years

Gabriel gets goals and cheaper keepers get more save points

    5. Bartowski

More wriggle room to make transfers i.e. James or Chilwell start popping off, if you have the money in defence already.

    6. Piggs Boson
      • 13 Years
      1 year, 3 months ago

I think the Arsenal attackers are so good, that I'd rather get 3 of those. There are strong defensive alternatives that can get close to the likes of Gabriel, whereas I can't see a Bruno ,Maddison or Watkins getting close to a Saka, Martinelli, or Jesus.

      1. Saka White Rice
        • 10 Years

We may also want their attack. Saka, Marti, Øde and Jesus. I think there is more value and they usually score enough to get biggest bonuses, Øde especially. Having Ramsdale limits possibility to have all of them.

FPL have a tendency to lock price drops on players they think they've under-priced.

Talented kid, but his output isn't quite there yet. I'd be surprised if he were first choice once the window closes, he should be eased in.

Mudryk and Madueke are still very raw. They could do with another experienced winger to deputise with Sterling while they both develop.

      Tough one
If to start then Sterling but if Ferguson there to be a bench player then him
Starting Ferguson with Welbeck and Pedro is hard to call who starts

Lots of talk about fancying a sexy 18-year-old. Hope ya'll are within reasonable range of that age, like, say, 25 years, give or take 10 years.

Pre season should reveal all but I like Gakpo, Nkunku and Mitro at 7.5.

Really struggling to fit Salah in at the moment and no idea on GK but the below squad is looking very strong and leaves a little ITB, lack of 4.5/5m mids is forcing a 3-5-2 formation.

    4.5
    TAA Shaw Gabriel
    Bruno Saka Maddison Mbeumo Mitoma
    Haaland 7.5
    4.0 Estupinan Botman 4.5

    A. Rashford
    B. Bruno

Wanted to put together a draft team, but just can't do it yet.

So much potential value at Spurs and Chelsea, but big questions which need to be answered in pre season.

Don't want to make a draft and fall in love with it yet. Unfortunately I'm an extremely stubborn person, so find it hard to admit I'm wrong and change my mind.

Keeping my powder dry for now.

Hmm potentially. Definitely will never be a bad pick, will tick along. Just a shame he doesn't take any set pieces or penalties at all.

All the local journalists are saying he stays as the 6 though. Tonali will be ahead of him more than likely

Does anyone know why Andy (LTFPL) started doing that god-awful voice in his intro when he says, "What is going on everyone? My name is Andy. Welcome back to another FPL vidiauu." I thought it was a joke the first time I heard it, but he's been doing it for a few months now I think.

    1. Deulofail

It was annoying enough to throw in the cringe-worthy, inauthentic and robotic YouTubisms like "What is up!/What is going on" and "welcome back to [new thing that you've never seen or been to before]".

I like Andy - I'm no hater - but this happens to reeeeaaally grind my geeaaars aaarrrghhhhhh

I believe it's called a "Youtube voice". You've got to jump through the hoops to be successful on Youtube. It's a well-refined formula.

Fair play to him. Takes balls and hard work to produce videos of that quality. Not my cup of tea, I enjoy doing the research and analysis myself, but credit to Andy for having the courage to step into the arena where the rocks are thrown.

Have you thought about making videos Deulo? I've thought about it but don't think I have what it takes atm...

Agree, fair play to him. Making money doing what he enjoys. Don't think I could do it though.

He already had a formula that was working very well. I now want to turn off the videos as soon as they start!

Making videos? I think I would like doing it in my own way, not selling out, and then giving up if it's crap, but I also wouldn't want to commit myself even further to the most embarrassing part of my life.

I would try to make every video perfect and then wait for people to find it, and thus I would fail. I couldn't keep up the constant stream of content for the sake of content, as I would feel like I was wasting server space and other people's lives. (Though keeping up a constant stream of excretion isn't difficult for me on here)

Would you go Mitoma and Bruno, or Rashford and Tieleman? They are the same money.

Whats people's thoughts on Tieleman at Villa?

    1. TheTinman

Deep lying playmaker who won't score or assist very often. A bad FPL pick. Curious to hear what others think though

I'd get Rashford in somehow, but you need to find cash to upgrade Tielemans imo. Finding an extra 0.5m to upgrade Tielemans would give you a huge points injection that should definitely offset the 0.5m downgrade elsewhere.

Personally, there's no way I'm starting without Rashford, bar any injury.
