Good to hear about the state of your briefs.

I'm tempted by Jota even if he gets just 65/25 minutes rotation each week. Could be fewer minutes unfortunately.

    a) Stones, Shaw, Odegaard
    b) Gabriel, Trent, Mbeumo

Like Shaw as a placeholder for Chilwell but B seems better long-term

how essential is Alexander Arnold? - with so many decent 5 - 5.5m defender options, the saving makes having all of salah/haaland/fernandes/Saka completely viable.

    thoughts?

      1. You can't have 'em all. Someone you think you need has to give way.
      2. People who look at Trent's historical record say he's essential.
      3. Liverpool's defence was very poor last season. The defence hasn't been improved. The midfield has - will this increase the chance of clean sheets?
      4. Will the improved midfield (Mac A and Slobby) increase TAA's chance of assists and goals, or will they take much of Trent's creative juices for themselves?

      1. x.jim.x

You keep calling their midfield “improved” when they’re bedding in 2 new players (1 from the BuLi, a league with an extremely high flop rate) and their only DM is 99% out the door with no word on a replacement.

From the club's perspective, it is improved. Do you think they spent £130 million to deliberately make it worse?
          Poor quality trolling 🙁

How is it trolling to say that a midfield of Szob (unknown quantity) + Mac + NO ONE is worse than Thiago + Henderson + Fabinho?

Because if the club felt Jones and Henderson were better than Slob and Mac A, they wouldn't have bought the latter.

Think TAA is an excellent pick, even at £8m.

There are numerous decent midfield options who i don't think will finish far behind Fernandes in particular in terms of points (if behind him at all). With that in mind, I've got a team with TAA, Salah, Haaland and Saka in at the moment

Not essential from GW1, in my opinion. Not convinced about early clean sheets. I think Liverpool will do much better this year, but not sure that their defence will drastically improve. Will Liverpool's high defensive line work better this season? How Trent is from an attacking point of view either as full back, inverted full back or deep lying midfielder still remains to be seen. Some of these questions should be answered by the time people are looking at their first WC.

Nothing fun about owning Ederson, surely Pep gets fed up with him this season and starts Ortega more. Jesus too injury prone for a bus team, like the rest though!

    Nkunku + 4.5 def
    Or
    6.5 mid + 5.5 def

    Already got Chilwell.

    1. Bad Kompany
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

If starting every week it probably has to be the second option as there lots of good options at both of those prices but Nkunku exciting

      1. Zimo
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Well I'll be using my transfers on the 4.5 def as well though. Probably starting with AWB and switching to Pau Torres/Rico Henry if he doesn't play.

        1. Zimo
          • 7 Years

But I really want John Stones as well for those first 7 fixtures. But then I also really want Nkunku for those first 8 😛 It's a dilemma.

        2. Bad Kompany
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

I'd probably still go with the second one. Think transfers can be better used elsewhere where there's more upside. What 6.5 mid and 5.5 defender would you be considering?

Also who are your strikers in that option? If you have Jesus or Watkins they could be an easy route in Nkunku

            • 7 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Nah its Haaland and Pedro. I'd probably go for Mbuemo and Stones as the 6.5 and 5.5. Nkunku and AWB in other one.

Ah, you're also on Haaland and Joao Pedro. Me too - it enables a great squad, but it does rather depend on JP actually playing in the half dozen matches when I need him to show up. How often are you planning on starting him?

Haha I'm hoping he plays regularly at least till GW4. Maybe Morris or Jimenez do well and can switch to them when fixtures swing if Pedro doesn't play regularly. Could also Wildcard and change structure or take a -4 to upgrade to Wissa maybe.

Could switch to midfield and get Danjuma as well if he's playing OOP as striker. Or MGW.

                    Where's he gone - Everton?
                    Wait, found him - 5.5
Nah, I'd rather punt on Enciso and stay in the same soup of uncertainty!

Surely a striker even at Everton is a decent punt as a 5.5 mid. I'm hoping DCL stays injured so Danjuma plays upfront instead of wide because it seems like Ashley Young is another OOP if that's the case.

If he's a regular starter, yeh. But other midfielders can stand in like Gray, and DCL could be in and out.
Sure, if I have JP in GW1 and he looks like a one-pointer whilst Danjuma is nailed, I can switch with a 2FT in GW3.

Well I need to see Everton are more capable than Wolves at actually scoring goals. It's looking grim for both of them.

How often do you think Pedro starts? He's one I was very excited about when I heard he signed, but I'm now getting worried about Brighton assets. There's only 4 spots for Mitoma, March, Lallana, Enciso, Pedro, Undav, Welbeck, and Ferguson. Not to mention Bounanotte and the fact that Gross could also play there

That is an issue yeah. He did look like their best player when he came on tho tbf. And he can play across the front line in all 4 positions so that's a plus point for him. 5.5 slot seems like low risk even if he rotates. Can switch him out.

Martinelli usually plays much more central with Jesus though. Think he'll be top scorer for them this season.

    3. Bad Kompany
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

I'm not sold on Jesus either. I quite like Martinelli though. I think he'll be nailed to start at least until UCL starts. I have some worries with Watkins. His and Villas numbers didn't actually improve as much as people think. They more went from underperforming to overperforming. I'm worried they might really miss Moreno and Ramsey at the start of the season, and many teams have struggled to cope with also being in Europe, which Emery has always put plenty of priority on

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Good points. Need to be balanced with Emery significantly strengthening the squad, and him having a deep track record of succeeding in the Europa whilst doing just fine in the league.

A side effect of losing Martinelli is I could have Ramsdale in goal rather than the untested Onana.

I've got more thinking to do; it's a question of a 343 or 352 with a dummy 4.5 at the end of the bench.

    4. Hairy Potter
      • 10 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

I'm a fan of Watkins and starting to consider 3 up front, as may want Nkunku as well. Just debating Watkins vs TAA at the minute. Not sure I see many clean sheets for Trent initially. Also I can do more with a 4.5 defender than a 4.5 forward.

Watkins has been pretty consistent the last few seasons and is the focal point for a good Villa team. Also think he's fixture proof to a certain extent as Villa are good on the counter. I don't expect hauls from him, but just to tick over in terms of goals.

    Flekken - Areola
    TAA - Shaw - Gabriel - Bell - Baldock
    Salah - Bruno - Saka - Mitoma - Ahamada

Shaw to a 4.5 and Bruno to Martinelli would allow you to upgrade Wissa to Darwin. Not saying I'm recommending it.

Yeah. I had Pickford before, but am really not sold on him.

Regarding the Liverpool bunch, I may have found an answer I can live with. Or is this too cheeky?

        TAA + Mubama + Wissa

Wouldn't call it cheeky, but you're reducing 2 nailed starters to one. And if you want a 5.5 fwd, I wouldn't bother with Jimi - a couple of us are exploring Joao Pedro above.

If Mitro leaves, I'd expect Jimi's ownership to pick up. But yeah, if Darwin is rotated, I'm going to regret it. And if I go Nkunku instead of him, I may regret dropping TAA. Ah, decisions...

I think it's more a question of can Bruno + Saka/Mitoma match or beat Rashford + Martinelli/Enciso by the time my first WC rolls along. Bruno's on PKs, so...maybe?

    RMT.

    Alison/Ederson

    Virgil, Stones, Cancello, Shaw, White

    Trossard, Anthony, Bowen, Maddison, Diaz

    Jesus, Watkins, Wilson.

Plenty of balance in this one.

I don't see balance. I see a lot of big-team second/third-choice cover that you might end up regretting. White, Trossard, Anthony (horrible choice IMO), Maddison, Diaz, Wilson, even Jesus might end up being heavily rotated.

Any thoughts? Starting to consider it is better to have Salah since it is easier to spread the funds if you have him rather than gather if you don't. 0.5itb so could even upgrade somewhere, maybe Wissa instead of Pereira if Wissa seems like a starter.

    Leno
    Estupinan Gabriel Botman
    Salah Rashford Saka Mitoma A.Pereira
    Haaland Nkunku

    4.0; Pau, Beyer, Archer

Unsure if already mentioned elsewhere, but (and of course likely not a pick) Cornet is being trialled as a 9 this preseason.

How much would TAA have to score more than a consistent 4.5 def for you to be okay with spending 8 on him?

I don't play that way. I rotate, buy/sell 4.5 defenders according to form and fixtures.

My concern is that there literally IS no consistent 4.5 mid. TAA didn't outscore Mings by much, but look at their respective timing and you'll see that TAA has all the momentum on his side and Mings (as well as Villa, period) played way above their heads all of last year. I'm genuinely curious, though, if Robbo's poor form all of last year was a blip or a true reflection of his worth. If he could rediscover his form of 21-22, he'd be a HUGE differential.

I think I'm coming round to Watkins plus a 4.5 defender over TAA and 4.5 forward. No doubt I'll own TAA at some point, probably on a WC, but not so sure about starting him from GW1.

One option would be to go with a 4.5-5.0 defender instead. Quite like that more than any of the 5.0 mids

Gakpo has dropped in to the the 'left attacking mid position' in the last two friendlies. Reverse out of position (POO).

I was hoping Gakpo might be a mid in FPL this season. I'm still considering him as feel I might need a Liverpool attacker and Salah and Trent might be too expensive.

"Gakpo played as one of the ‘number eights’ in Szoboszlai’s absence"
Yes, but it is also an indicator that Gakpo will be the one removed from forward positions throughout the season. Not what you want from a £7.5m forward on FPL.

        1. Drexl Spivey
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

It doesn't indicate that at all. It only indicates he's played two friendlies as an eight, allowing his competition game time up front. And he doesn't have to start every game to justify the £7.5m price tag. It's Liverpool.

          1. LangerznMash
            • 9 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Of course it is an indicator. Klopp could have tried Jota or Diaz there but he didn't. So if Alexis or Szoboszlai are unavailable at times this season, the current information indicates that Gakpo will be the one to drop back into #8.
