Arsenal have today announced the signing of Santi Cazorla on a “long-term deal” from Malaga. The Spaniard arrives at the Emirates for a fee rumoured to be in the region of £16.5m and is the third major signing of the summer for Arsene Wenger’s side, following the early-summer captures of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

On welcoming Cazorla to the club, Wenger was quick to emphasise the attacking options offered by the Spaniard, immediately creating a debate on how the Gunners will utilise their new man…

“He is a versatile, attacking midfield player who can play comfortably on either side of the pitch or centrally. He has good pace, is technically gifted and will be a huge asset to Arsenal Football Club…We are delighted that he is joining us.”

The Statistics

Cazorla’s career began in the Real Oviedo youth set-up, where he featured for four years before signing for Villarreal at the age of 17. He was gradually introduced to the first-team squad, initially spending a couple of seasons in the Villarreal B team, where he scored four goals in 40 appearances before stepping up to the senior side in 2004. Cazorla struggled to impress, though, scoring just two goals in 51 league matches over couple of seasons and was sold to newly-promoted Recreativo in the 2006-07 season, with a buy-back option inserted in his contract. Netting five times in 34 appearances, he helped the club to eighth place in La Liga and his displays saw Villarreal snap him up once again.

Installed to the Yellow Submarine’s first XI, Cazorla was instrumental in earning his side a runners-up slot in Spain’s top-flight; nine assists and five goals in 36 league games caught the eye of Real Madrid but despite Villarreal accepting an offer, he rejected the chance to move to the Bernabeu. Despite missing a third of the 2009-10 campaign through injury, Cazorla’s performances continued to impress – his second stint at the club produced 23 goals and 27 assists from 127 appearances before big-spending Malaga came calling prior to the start of last season.

Purchased for an estimated €21m, Cazorla’s acquisition was key to the club’s fourth place finish in 2011/12. Playing every league game for his new side, he went on to return six assists in addition to nine goals – his most prolific season to date, in terms of overall goal contribution. The Arsenal new boy has also turned out for Spain on 41 occasions and has found the net four times.

The Prospects

As mentioned by Wenger, Cazorla is able to play on either flank or through the middle in “the holeâ€, affording the Gunners’ boss plenty of versatility in the attacking midfield three. Bearing in mind he’s adaptable enough to also feature in the double-pivot, the 27-year old certainly looks a strong bet for plenty game time in the season ahead in Arsenal’s new-look starting XI.

Quite where he will fit in remains to be seen if Wenger maintains the 4-2-3-1 shape utilised last term. To an extent, much could depend on the future of Robin Van Persie – if the Dutchman departs, Giroud would be favourite to fill in as the lone forward and, with Podolski perhaps slotting in on the left and Theo Walcott in the driving seat for a starting berth on the opposite flank, Cazorla could see plenty game time in the middle of an attacking trio lining up behind the lone frontman, pulling the strings as the Gunners’ key creator. Considering only four players provided more goalscoring opportunities in La Liga last term, it’s clear just what type of Wenger has on his hands here, with Cazorla’s set-pieces duties, and free-kicks in particular, a strong asset of his play; another factor to consider should Van Persie up and leave, with the Spaniard the likeliest to benefit.

Quite how quickly the new arrivals will gel is another matter to consider. The Arsenal boss has already admitted his plans to ease both Podolski and Giroud into the action with the pair yet to feature in pre-season; it’s yet unclear as to how he views Cazorla but long-term, the playmaker has the undeniable potential to become a real Fantasy favourite and offer us a strong midfield option over the season ahead.

In terms of price, either 8.5 or 9.0 looks likely in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – the same valuation as Walcott and one that would still look enticing, with the likes of Gervinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Thomas Rosicky all dropping in the pecking order as a result of Cazorla’s introduction to the Gunners’ first-team. For the Sky Sports game, a cost of 7.5 looks likely – the same as Walcott and in line with the Premier League new boys Eden Hazard (7.7) and Shinji Kagawa (7.6).

Arsenal’s relatively tricky start to the season could well see many Fantasy managers overlooking Cazorla to begin with, however. Bearing in mind the strong opening schedules of both Spurs and United, in addition to Chelsea’s double Gameweek 1, there are plenty of similarly-priced midfield options currently offering better potential to kick off the campaign.

With Wenger’s men facing Liverpool, City and Chelsea in the first six Gameweeks in addition to a trip to Stoke, they arguably have just two enticing fixtures from the off; home clashes against Sunderland and Southampton. This, in addition to the possibility of Van Persie staying, affords Cazorla the chance to immediately prove himself as a differential – if Arsenal are to avoid the poor opening set of performances from last time round, the former Malaga man has the intelligence and talent to be hugely instrumental.

Until Dunne comes back. May move to CM, but most likely situation is that Dunne comes in to replace Clark. Safer to get one of the full-backs, once Warnock and Hutton leave. Lowton looks likely to start, plus is good going forward.

Well his best position is RB. Hutton will probably never play for Villa again (not played in friendlies, not taken on the US tour and told to leave), and Lowton seems to be more favoured than Lichaj. Even then, he could play at LB (although Warnock seems to still be around).

          Very likely back four:

          Lowton----Vlaar----Clark-----Warnock/Lichaj

Lichaj played at LB at the end of the season, but we're very weak there so may buy a proper LB.

Warnock has been dreadful for two years. Hutton has been even worse. Compare them on the comparison tool; when Warnock outdoes you by that much, you're in trouble.

Only played there a couple of times, ended up in CM for most of the season when he played. He won't be first choice, with Lichaj and Lowton ahead of him at RB, and El Ahmadi and Clark ahead of him as DCM.

He's been playing a lot during pre-season, and playing well at that. Warnock's ran out of steam over the last couple of seasons. As seen last season, Lambert is more than happy to blood the youth in the first team (as seen with Ryan Bennett, Naughton to an extent).

Wenger signing all these players is either
    A. A desperate attempt to keep RVP by buying quality to convince to stay and possibly win titles (yeah I know, shoosh)
    B. Conceding that Van Persie is moving on, so he is buying replacements and spending the money that he will get from his sale.

Man i hope it is A.

Jamie Ness is a 4.0 defender who's actually a midfielder, but those who know tell me he won't play.

Arsenal's wingers are also classified as midfielders.

As is Juan Mata who usually plays on the left wing for Chelsea when I've seen him play.

Cuellar - Fabio - Simpson (Gorkss) (McCartney)

Piennar - Ben Arfa - Hazard - Nasri (Britton)

Go for Saylor, Santon or Colo over Simpson. He wants too much money and is likely to leave. The other 3 are better attacking prospects anyway.

Would also wait on HBA as he's only just started pre-season and is likely to be eased in.

You need at least one big team defender imo.

You only need £2m for Torres --> Rooney.

Agree with Cabaye that you should go for any other NCL defender over Santon. Go Ben Arfa --> Bale and keep that £2m and that's some midfield, obviously with a pretty week defence, which you're aware of.

Why are people bothering with Hazard? For the same price you can get Mata who is already proven in the Premiership. Hazard seems to think he's more than he is and it wouldn't surprise me if he was a bit of a flop.

I'd change HBA to Cabaye and Nasri to Toure. Leaving 4m in the bank. Use that to either improve one of your 4.5 defenders to Lescott/Ivanovic or change Simpson to one of them and then use the remaining 0.5 on a 4.5 second goalkeeper. Playing Green in goal every game just seems stupid.

      So,
      Gazzaniga --> Ruddy
      Simpson --> Lescott
      Ben Arfa --> Cabaye
      Nasri --> Y. Toure

2m in the bank for Torres --> Rooney in GW2.

    Any suggestions very welcome:

    Federici - de Gea

    McCartney - Hangeland - Cole - Baines - Fonte

    Guthrie - Noble - Maloney - Mata - Bale

    Aguero - Graham - Torres

    +2m for You-Know-Who

Slightly nervous about having 3 cheap midfielders but I'm viewing Baines as a 6th midfielder who, at 7m, seems to offer a lot more value than the equivalent priced midfielders.

      Hart + Larsson + 0.5m I'd say.

Kagawa is untried in the PL and might even be a rotation risk - Friedel is now in an AVB team and he is a man possessed of some radical notions when it comes to defending.

The other two are solid, proven FPL players (though Hart is maybe over-priced...)

I have Hazard and Bale to start. Then Utd mid in later.

Swansea may have great fixtures but dunno if Dyer sure starter. I am thinking McAnuff as he has a DGW then I am happy enough to bench until I get money to upgrade him. Ireland less keen on as he is shite

Surely you cant just be looking at GW2 for this decision though... I think torres mate do better in GW2 but then Aguero will be better after that. Plus i think Rooney will do better then Torres in GW2, so thats why Torres is out unless he proper impresses.

I am just wondering where the Rooney love is coming from at the moment just looking at MANU’s first 10 fixtures there are 2 standouts and other than that?

    eve– FUL – sou – WIG – liv – TOT – new – STK – che – ARS

Not until week 11 do the fixtures really pick up and the Champions League will have started -as I recall aren’t MANU away after each CL match.

The appeal stems from the fact that there are so many question marks over who starts in their midfield. With Rooney, you are guaranteed starts so it's a great way to "cover" Man Utd attacking points.

It's also easy to downgrade Rooney to whoever hits form - e.g. if P Cisse is banging them in for fun first few games and Rooney has some tough fixtures coming up you can make that switch in 1 transfer and use the funds generated to upgrade elsewhere the following week.

      Also, it's Wayne Rooney.

I know what your saying makes logical sense. I'm going in swinging big in attack this year and find it difficult to justify Rooney. I have the feeling it might be one of the those off and on seasons for him again, as for Jack(Off)'s 6, me thinks he might have let his eyes wander over the MCY's openers by accident.

You've invested too much up front for me

Begovic is he nailed on? personally I'd be concerned every week if he's gonna play.....
Maybe downgrade Kompany to Lescott to try and free up some funds to upgrade mid
Mid is way too light and risky in my opinion, Michu (unproven), Diaby (will he even play) Barfa (may miss the opening game due to injury/fitness).... All to accommodate your front 3???

    Thoughts please guys?

    Green / Federici

A.Cole Lescott Walker (Demel , Barnett)

    Lampard VDV Valencia Noble (Guthrie)

    Torres Tevez Graham

Have 2m to get Rooney in GW2 for Torres. Happy with the defence good balance throughout. Just a few questions though, I am now worried about Lescott + Tevez, City haven't started spending yet and if City get Agger he will be in everybodys team surely? If City sign a BIG striker Tevez will be out and also as a Man Utd fan Valencia is one of my favourites but thinking dropping him for Kagawa/Young and upgrading VDV to Bale? Help

    Vorm,Rudd
    Lescott,Cole A,McCartney,Rangel,Gorkss
    Mata,Britton,Noble,Bale,Valencia
    Pogrebnyak,Rooney,Torres

    Planning wilcard between gw4-8
Torres can become whichever mid priced forward seems good (lots of options here)

West Ham have a good fixture when Reading have a blank gw4, so they rotate well...
Britton is the best for his price - I can't have Guthrie because otherwise I'd have 3 Reading and would have 1 player missing in gw3.

Any thoughts on this? I think I'm set. Very low risk team (except for the swansea factor)

How is it that it seems none of you favour Nolan of WH ahead of Noble. I know the latter takes PKs and free kicks, but Nolan still had more goals and assists last year. Isn't it a close call between the two? (If not, which 6M midfielder would be a better bet?)

you can always get then a little later if it turns out they are the chosen ones! remember, all the bargain players aren't going to suddenly disappear. Also defenders don't normally go up that much in the first few gameweeks

I'm not really keen on 6.0 or 6.5 mids. I think there is too much of a gamble there, would rather have clear cheap rotators and better/assured starter premium players. (see my team above)

I'm not gettin hung up on fixtures so much this season for attacking players, did me no good last year.

Use the first few GW's to see how Arsenal line up and he performs. If his form is good, he's in.
