In case you missed it, we’ve expanded our coverage of Fantasy games this season and have rolled out our own league in the Sky Sports game. What better way, then, to boost our know-how of this new diversion than an interview with last season’s overall winner, Michael Shipley: a long-time visitor and member of Fantasy Football Scout…

FFScout: Take us through your title winning season. What were the turning points and key transfers/decisions you made during the campaign?
MS: Since you have the opportunity to change your captain every week there are plenty of decisions to regret throughout the season! However it’s the choices towards the end of the campaign that you tend to remember and think of as crucial, even though in reality, early decisions are just as important. In the same way that Man City’s three points against Swansea in Gameweek 1 was just as important as the dramatic win against QPR on the last day, my decision to select Sergio Aguero as captain for the final week stands out.

FFScout: Who was/were your key player(s) throughout? Were there any differentials who came in and produced for you?
MS: It was obviously essential to cash in on Robin Van Persie’s form for much of the season. I drafted in Jonny Evans, Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson sometime around March – all performed consistently until May and also provided the necessary funds to invest in Aguero in April.

FFScout: How did your initial lineup fare? Are you a believer in clawing back early lineup mistakes?
MS: I benefited from Edin Dzeko’s early season goal blast but obviously had to remove him fairly sharpish when he fell out of favour. If you make a mistake with your initial selection or if circumstances conspire against you early in the season, then you definitely can’t ride it out for almost an entire campaign without subs to call on. However the difficulty is identifying it and not making another mistake trying to rectify it.

FFScout: Did you play any other games alongside the Sky Sports Fantasy last season? At which point did the Sky Sports game become the priority?
MS: I also entered the Mirror (YTM), Metro, Sun and Daily Mail competitions. I didn’t pay any attention to the Sun or Metro from November. After that I mainly focused on the Sky teams and helping my wife with her Daily Mail teams, although I kept an eye on YTM for the remainder of the season after staying in contention for longer than expected.

FFScout: How much of an impact did the race for the prize have on your day-to-day life?
MS: Not too much. During the run-in I was keenly refreshing the leaderboards the morning after fixtures and wondering what players rivals might have.

FFScout: How did the final day of the season unfold for you?
MS: I had used all my transfers and the captain deadline was the previous midweek (note Gameweeks now run Saturday to Friday), therefore the dye was cast, so to speak. So I could enjoy normal weekend activities such as taking the kids to the cinema and mowing the lawn. The term “enjoy” is adopted loosely for the latter, but I could enjoy the final day drama unfold knowing it had eventually been done! Even after Aguero scored and subsequently was awarded the Man of the Match, I didn’t know whether it was enough to secure top spot, since it was a strong possibility that my rivals could have captained him. So I didn’t get excited until I learned that my main rival had chosen Fernando Torres as his captain for Chelsea’s double Gameweek.

FFScout: Do you tend to favour established players or are you willing to take a risk on new arrivals to the Premier League?
MS: I am quite happy to take a calculated gamble, sometimes it works out and other times you pick Mauro Boselli!

FFScout: Without giving too much of your strategy away, do you have any tips for new Sky Sports Fantasy managers out there? Ie, with no benches to allow rotation, how should our approach differ?
MS: I honestly can’t think of anything other than the standard Fantasy football strategies that I’m sure that the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor would be aware of. Having no bench should make team selections simpler; just pick the 11 players that will score the most points!

FFScout: How do you think the rule changes concerning bonus points will alter your strategy for the forthcoming season?
MS: It is just another factor to consider when weighing up the value of a player. It will require less conventional judgments to be made on selections but I am fine with that.

The Scout League

Thanks to Michael for taking time out his pre-season to talk to us. You can join him in the hunt for the top prize of £25,000 this season’s Sky Sports Fantasy Football, while in our Fantasy Football Scout League we’ve a home cinema system worth £600 up for grabs.

Register your team here and then sign up for the “FFScout” League with the PIN Code: 8004519.

Sky Stats On the Way

If you’ve already signed up, or on the verge of doing so, you’ll hopefully interested in knowing that tomorrow we’re scheduled to release our Sky Sports stats table for members. These will take the new bonus points system and apply them to last season’s data. The tables will identify those players who earned 60+ successful passes and 4+ tackles won per match and offer an overall bonus score, plus a minutes per bonus stat. They’ll be available for all positions and fully sortable. Right now, if you’re playing the Sky Sports game, this data is unavailable elsewhere.

We’ll also be publishing a follow-up article, analysing the top performers from last term and identifying the potential benefactors of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football bonus points for the season ahead.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I currently have A) but am now worried about VDV's injury status and Hazard being 'eased' into the PL. Would B) be a safer option?

    A) Hazard, VDV
    B) Lampard, Bale

Money no object if there are other options

I tend to agree actually. With all the new faces around the chelsea team perhaps the old master Lampard could get a lot more game time early doors to ease the transition

The two are rivals as far as I'm concerned. If VDV is injured and out for a while then siggy for sure. If they play together though I think VDV will be a better option as Siggy may well go into CM

It seems a lot will be decided in the community shield game this weekend. Here are some of the subjects that will need to be answered.

    1. Lampard vs Hazard.

Old Mr reliable vs the new kid on the block. Who will be the best option early doors, will Hazard need time to adapt? Will Lampard be used a lot early on to add experience to the Chelsea team and allow the new signings to slowly adapt?

    2. Will City play 3-5-2

As a result does Yaya and Kolerov become good fantasy prospects.

    3. Tevez vs Aguero

How nailed on is Tevez and will he play a role that has the potential to get at least almost as much points as Aguero. Or will Aguero be in scintillating form making it almost impossible to leave him out regardless of his price.

    4. Chelsea's form

What will happen if they crumble to a massive defeat against City? Will their DGW become very unattractive as a result, and what does that mean for our plans early on.

Imo, the best option from Chelsea's midfield is Ramires. He looks to be the most likely to get the most amount of game time out of the lot for GW1.

Mata may stake a claim as well. Ramires plays more in the attacking 3 mids though whereas there may be less competition in the 2 pivot roles where lampard now plays

Fairly generic (which isn't a bad thing!) but not too bad on the whole.

Use that £1m to upgrade your defence maybe? Could do with some City coverage in your back seven.

Maybe Rangel --> Clichy / Zabaleta /Kolarov depending on who looks more likely to start. I'd use the Community Shield as a good indicator for this.

Swansea won't keep as many clean sheets as last season in my opinion, with Laudrup being much more attack-minded.

Very interesting. If Mancini sticks with this formation in the Premier League then, who'll be the third alongside Kompany and Lescott at the back? Could Kolo Toure become a cheap way into City's defence maybe? Or will Richards get the nod?

Can't really be worse than the Irelands that are being flogged about.

My only concern is that he may take 1 of the 3 Utd spots you might want to fill in your team ... but seeing as you only have two with him included, you're not painted into any corners.

Is this too crazy for GW1? Defenders on average get the least points over the course of a season (even less than goalkeepers).

Hart (4.0 with minimal ownership so price can't go down)
    Hangeland McCartney Gorkss (Cuellar, Clyne)
    Yaya Hazard Bale Michu (Guthrie)
    Torres Aguero Petric

Obligatory 2.0mm in the bank for Torres -> Rooney

I think if you're going to go cheap at the back you need to go with 3 big hitters up front.
Three from Tevez, Aguero, Rooney, Torres...and you can add RVP, Adebayor, Suarez, Podolski, Giroud etc. (when transfers are cleared up and/ or fixtures ease)

Personally, I think Green is a terrible keeper but that probably doesn't matter because you have DDG. I'm avoiding DDG...SAF seems to rotate for Lindegaard on exactly those games you don't want him to...home to easy teams.

Vlaar, Hazard, Petric...probably one punt to many on players that are new to the PL.

I think McCartney is a better pick than Demel. Sinclair could be downgraded (relying on pens a bit much) to allow you to upgrade Rio to Vidic (if your locked in on a Man Utd def)

Yaya, Torres, Aguero, Hughes, Cuellar, Maloney....I like those picks.

Yep hazard taking all set pieces, vlaar nailed on n villas fixtures favourable, metric the new boselli...but I am tempted by boselli once more ;-p these are risks but calculated ones. Sinclair will harvest points but michu is a big time player.

Gw2 hazard to sig and Torres to Defoe

Your plan should incorporate the Caps Lock button.

That's a very good team imo.
I would worry about Begovic...can you squeeze another 0.5 m to get rotating 9.5m keepers?

Im already trying to squeeze it to get Robin in just in case he doesnt move. So far all i can think of is Hangeland to Hughes. that yieds me 0.5. Need to find another 0.5 somewhere since guthrie is the only 4.5 option atm and there isnt any 4.0 mid this year.

I wouldn't worry about RVP until his situation is cleared up.
Even if he stays, you can prob leave it a few weeks before planning to get him in as Arsenal have a tough start.

                  Good answer!

                  What about Valencia to Kagawa?

No, I would start with Valencia. Easier swap to Kagawa rather than the other way around!

I would have a second think about Ba... I reckon you could downgrade him if anything. Petric, Graham have better fixtures and have already put in a good shift with their pre-seasons?

Surely from here Luka Modric won't stay at Spurs? They know that he doesn't want to be there and that's a lot of money to have sitting at home playing FIFA. So with him moving it is HIGHLY likely that Spurs will snap up another keeper... which is Lloris according to his manager.

Conclusion: If you have Friedel (which I currently do also) start planning an alternative back line!
