I expect a lot of people selling trippier just cause they play Chelsea and Man U but I think thats two cs for newcastle tbh. Both at home and against mediocre attackers

Im selling Trippier when he has blanked 5 in a row or is flagged red.

If he’s blanked 5 in a row he’s probably just closer to a haul

Only really a sell if you’re restructuring IMO ie. shifting funds to attackers

Hopefully the IB can rejuvenate Newcastle defence, because they looked pretty woeful last night.

Trippier has looked pretty out of sorts lately - and bar one good set piece delivery looked terrible vs Bou.

I already have a budget defence. Is it worth going to pure bench fodder to upgrade Alvarez to Watkins? Zero ITB right now

    Areola (turner)
    Cash, Trips, Maguire (tsimiskas, gusto)
    Salah, Salah, son, mbueno, Gordon
    Haaland, Alvarez (Archer)

Bit unfair to have two Salah’s.
I like spreading the money somewhat evenly, so no for me. Don’t think Watkins is that much more of an upside to Alvarez.

Salah, Salah, Son, Mbueno & Gordon

I can downgrade Cash to 3.8 to get 1.2m but I could smear the downgrade by doing something like

      Turner to 3.9
      Gusto to 3.8
      Tsimiskas to 3.9

Speaking of ill-timed BB, how much do you think this bench would get GW13 if the squad comes out unscathed over the IB?

      Areola (bur)
      Lascelles (CHE)
      Cash (tot)
      Archer (BOU)

I'm guessing 14-16pts from this lot:

Do we think Myko is worth the 0.4 or so over Branthwaite? Would rotate with Lascelles as a third defender

As an Evertonian, no. I'm pleased with Myko's progress from last year, and really like him as a team player, but this is his ceiling. Branthwaite made a dumb mistake this week, but Myko is prone to those too...the offensive contributions are a fluke. Tark might be worth .4 over Branthwaite.

      1. Unliklinho

Or, you could look purely at form and say yes. I know nothing about Everton, but was looking at cheap defenders with form to facilitate the Haaland buyback. I settled on Mykolenko and have had 20 points in two gameweeks. Sometimes it helps to look at things more abstractly.

        1. Haa-lala-land
          • 5 Years

Very nice buy! I think we sometimes need to change our fixed perspectives on players quicker than we do. So Mykolenko didn't score or assist last season much, but has done twice in a row yet we are still holding onto our fixed perspectives of he won't continue. Sometimes players improve their skill season to season, or their role within the team changes, and we are slow to accept it being anything than temporary.
Like you say sometimes you got to believe what your eyes are telling you.

Those planning a gameweek 19 wildcard, will you be omitting Son and Salah from your wildcards and hoping they don't absolutely go off in gameweek 20?

Spurs play Bournemouth at home and Liverpool play Newcastle at home.

It's right before AfCon and the Asian Cup. I'm still not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do regarding those fixtures, but unless I'm offbase, it feels like a waste to WC into both in GW19 and then lose them for an unknown number of weeks.

You should only complain about Saka only getting an assist if you captained him, it is unrealistic to expect players on average to get more than one return per week and even that is very good.

Enjoy your 5 pts lol. £8.5m defender couldn’t even haul against the so called small clubs. I am just wondering why you shared this, almost as if you’re trying to console yourself.

Saka is a turd pick at that price. Better value elsewhere!

          Yes I was happy.
Bought Martinelli @ 7.7 for this gw. Martinelli 7.7 vs Burnley = 2 points
          Saka 8.6 vs Burnley = 5 points

3 pts difference for Mary’s sake.

Martinelli @ 7.7 for 31 points this season. Saka @ 8.6 for 71 points this season.

Martinelli was my gw 12 punt, my maths might not be the best but I am pretty sure Mary will agree with me that 3 points difference between a £7.7 & £8.6 midfielder is really nothing. 😆

Taking out City where he was injured, that’s only 4 matches and he’s only failed to return in 3 matches all season, including that City match.

I’d be confident Saka will outscore Martinelli over the season and will probably be better value. My only worry is fitness but he seems to be playing through whatever injury he has. He’s definitely on my watch list

& if he doesn’t score a goal vs Brentford it would be 2 months without a PL goal for £8.6 Saka. Can’t get a better turd pick elsewhere imo.

Not sure how to turn around this season...around 4 million OR right now

    This is my GW team

    Areola
    Taylor Gabriel Cash
    Browen Martinelli Diaby Son Salah
    Darwin Haaland

    Turner Archer Kabore Udogie

7 points so far (with -4). I'm mostly a safe player with some differentials here and there. I have finished inside 4k once, inside 50k twice and had some respectable ORs in the past. Last two seasons have been quite terrible finishing around 500k both times. Don't know what I should adjust in my approach. Do I need to get bolder with my choices? Clearly I care too much about this adult hobby :/

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with your approach to the squad (maybe a slightly weak defense, but the position is almost a liability this year). This year, luck is more a factor than it has been. I'm just doing what I want, within reason, so I don't get bored; generally this means being bolder with my choices, but then I wind up in a situation like this week, where not captaining Haaland means that his contributions hurt my rank (ranging between ~400-800k each week) fairly significantly. Although our squads look different, I'm at 6 with a -4, and most of my hopes are pinned on tomorrow. Last week was funny, but this week is ticking me off.

There’s only about 50 points between 4m and 1m and another 50 points or so to 50k. These are the sorts of gaps that are hauled in on a strong run in. As has already been said, 50 point gaps can be the result of a couple of 50/50 decisions; there’s a lot of luck. I’d just keep playing your way and hopefully you’ll get a few breaks.

I almost captained Martinelli so I understand tbh. Main reason why I didn’t was because Arteta was annoying during his presser. He gave nothing away & it was only Burnley! Also I wasn’t sure about trusting Martinelli over Salah even though Martinelli had the best fixture.

You made the right call but I wish you noticed Saka’s form because it seems that’s what let you down.

              Ha! Yes, Arteta’s a beauty isn’t he?

Re Saka’s form, I thought a goal and an assist in the week was enough of a sign, and to a reasonable extent a good fixture can lead to good form. But yes, he’s quite a way from the level of last season.

With Spurs season looking completely derailed and Son running around like a headless chicken yesterday, the time to bring Haaland back for me will be straight after LFC ready for Spurs. Nkunku should be back by GW16 as well, could be sooner. Built up enough TV now. This defence rotates really well too. By GW14 will look more or less like this pending injuries etc. Will still have Nunez until Nkunku is match fit. Triple Chelsea possibly could troll again but they seem to be settling now and their fixtures are the lure.

    Johnstone Areola
    Trippier Cash Gabriel Colwill Mykolenko
    Salah Saka Bowen Gordon Palmer
    Haaland Nkunku Alvarez

It's good to have a plan. My plan was to make no more transfers until Afcon. This lasted a few hours until Maddison's flag turned red and it all kicked off again.

One of the benefits of having 3 extra assets instead of Haaland has seen my TV from GW8 go from 102.2 to 104.5.

Plus my rank improved as well. If Spurs did not hit a brick wall, I would have gone up to GW19 without Haaland.

Nice team. Planning something pretty similar. I had Colwill early days and he looked attacking but unfortunately got no attacking returns. Looking to get him back if Reece James is broken again. Might want even both. Nkunku is certainly probably worth having. I just sold Alvarez, it may haunt me, but only time will tell. I had my reasons and KdB for example will be back.

For players returning from long term injury, how many matches must they start before you consider them safe to add to your team?

Depends on injury and minutes played. Hand, toe and shoulder injuries means that one start is enough if they play well. Hamstrings, ankles and knees are to be monitored longer. After injury form is matter of eye test. DCL hasn't found his best yet.

Safety is also relative term. With strong squad it's easier to jump on higher risk players early. With 14 starters getting someone like Reece James and having Colwill as 2nd sub is easier. But if the bench is fodder, Beyer and Baldock are the bench, getting known injury risk player means much higher risk of being forced to take hits.

I think Alvarez will play second striker again once KDB is back. It worked well for City having him right behind Haaland.

Not sure why Pep changed the system but could be that Alvarez is very good at collecting the ball, finding other players, being the runner in the team and distributing ball. He is still on corners and fk's and I have had him since 6.5 so no point in me selling.

Kompany needs to hook James Trafford asap I'm sure he'll be a decent keeper in time and obviously a lot of potential but he's coming off seasons spent in League 1 and this is a totally different ball game, confidence looks shot to pieces and he's a massive liability with his decision making. I thought all 3 of Arsenal's goals were at least partly attributable to him.

No, not really. Spurs were worse and Son looked like he was lost. Today can change everything or we may see last week's horror story again.

But as having been Udogie owner seeing Porro hurt for a moment. Didn't know which Ars def to pick, I went for Gabriel. Didn't see any significant difference in attacking threat compared to Saliba. White's seemed to have declined from first weeks. Zinchenko would have been the pick, but his minutes made it impossible. Had Saliba not risen in price one day earlier, I more likely would have been greedy for that 0.1. Yet Gabriel has been getting more attacking returns in less minutes than him previously.

After having brought Tsimikas earlier and Nketiah (I could and should have benched him, but couldn't check leaks if there were any), I decided to get wrong Ars def first instead of him. Hall was subbed off at 45, so perhaps you just have to wait for one more week and see what happens. I expect him to start.

      I don't think they're that bad.

      - Spurs v Villa should have loads of goals
      - City v Liverpool has the potential to be high scoring (especially if players like Nunez and Doku start given how direct they are and how much they can help to stretch games)
      - Arsenal v Brentford could suit both teams (Brentford tend to sit deep and allow teams to shoot from distance/around the box a lot, then like to try to counter)
      - Chelsea are no great shakes so I'd expect a reaction from Newcastle after their two losses this week (especially at home)
      - Everton will probably beat ManUtd

      1. Andrew D48

I’m no Chelsea fan but a lot of people thought Spurs would hammer them and yes I know there were sendings off I would expect Newcastle to win at home but it’s not a certainty

Chelsea struggled to create against a 10 then 9 man team that had a defensive line at the halfway line. Their first goal was a penalty too (and quite honestly I'm still surprised nobody mentioned that if Sterling was punished for his blatant dive seconds before Romero's tackle, it wouldn't have happened). If Son's very marginal offside goal was given then Spurs would have been 2-0 up in 15 mins. Definitely not a certainly but despite how this week has gone for Newcastle, I'd happily back them against a side that has picked up that result in a very lucky manner v Spurs and beat bottom of the table Burnley and a toothless Fulham

Just looking at the weeks ahead, is there an obvious plan to navigate MCI v BRE blank in GW18 and their likely double in GW20?

My current plan is to build strong enough XV or XIV and just bench Haaland and Mbeumo if I buy him before that. A lot depends on rumoured gw 20 dgw. Those influencers ITK are talking a lot about FH, but I believe it's going to much more valuable later. One match cancellation is not a reason to waste a chip.

comes with the territory. Goalkeeper is a tough position, Pope had a world class game yesterday but he'll get no plaudits because it didn't influence the game other than to stop them getting spanked. Man Utd's goalkeeper always attracts scrutiny as do £40M+ goalkeepers.

Playing a few games without making a large error doesn't undo some of his earlier large errors. Confidence in his ability has been eroded. They paid 40m for him, he shouldn't be making more than one or two large errors a season. Expectation has been lowered in what's expected from him, if anything, making a CS home to Luton as being something to be congratulatory of.

    Pick 2.
    Bowen, Gordon, Palmer?

I’d go Bowen and then Gordon but thinking of Palmer as a very good quality enabler

Bowen, Gordon, but based on yesterday's thread-bare team performance, I would now go Palmer over Gordon.

Bowen and Palmer. I was just looking at Gordon and his stats. 0.11 xGi vs Burnley proved my eye test. I could get him for Nakamba since I saved money by getting Gabriel instead of Saliba, but 0.11 vs Burnley... If I was a native speaker, I could find a word for it, but horrendous is the best I am capable of, sorry.

Has anyone tried the What If machine yet this season? I'd be 30 pts better off doing nothing from GW1 apparently and that was a squad with a Jason Steele/Matt Turner rotation in goal. Not sure what I was thinking there. Started the season with Watkins but didn't have him during his Brighton game is the main difference probably in the points so I'm not taking it too personally

I don’t think I want to I know how many points I’ve missed out on I ignore my bad game weeks and try to look forward

Just tried it, really interesting. I’m 79 points better off now. Would’ve expected better from Chilwell and Rashford and Pedro was always a punt based on preseason. Ødegaard and Estupinan bad luck with injuries

+94 pts and TV over 7 million higher now. My gw1 team wasn't good or lucky, Martinelli over Mbeumo for example.

    Activated my WC!

The team currently has shaped up like this.

    Areola | Sanchez
    Saliba Guehi Castagne
    Salah Saka Bruno Bowen Mitoma
    Haaland Nkunku
    ¦ Boly Lascelles Archer

    0.1 ITB

    What would you change?

Cast Ange to Mykolenko, Everton have turned the corner I think.

Both GKs. Not sure about the defence either (if you like Fulham's fixtures Leno is better than Castagne). Quite like the Nkunku pick but maybe a bit early? No Trippier/Son perhaps a bit kneejerk? Personally I think Bruno & Bowen are a bit overrated

I bought in Bruno last week for home Luton as the luxury punt and Captained him. I've already transferred him straight back out!

Don't bring in players that are still injured or just returning from a long-layoff. I've made that mistake on many occasions, it just isn't worth the hassle. Could be many weeks before he's ready to start, could break down again, etc. All it takes is one FT to get him later whenever you're absolutely sure he's fully ready

Solanke is now 4th highest scoring striker and has 5 juicy fixtures to come. Is he going under the radar?
