West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

SAF's open comments about trying to get him and Mancini saying he is unlikely to go there suggest RVP himself want's the UTD move. SAF is not stupid enough to go public without confirming RVP's desire to go there.

Well said but I don't think Arsenal will want to sell their best player to their rivals. Won't they prefer if he went abroad instead - Juventus perhaps?

Wasn't he complaining about the lack of signings and using that as an excuse for him being frustrated. Arsenal then sign some decent players and he's still seeking a move away. He's a bullshitter. Arsenal have stood by him over the years through his injury problems and now he does a runner. Gone off him big time. Good player but a bit of a twat.

Can't hate him after he single handedly guided us to third. He's been a model professional. Didn't miss a single training session, pictured for the jerseys, didn't hand in a transfer request, even travelled with the team and spoke highly of (his replacement) Giroud!

Also, fans might dislike him leaving but in all honesty it's a good thing for us, financially. If he signs on, he'll demand a huge wage with no resale value and we won't even get the 20m which we will if we sell him.

Green and Davis rotate well and are cheap. The money saved will go along way across the whole of the season. How successful they will be is difficult to gauge, but I reckoj they'll be decent value.

Don't fancy any of the 4s. Cuellar and Hughes look bargains and rotate terrifically with Williams and Collocini.

Don't fancy Torres or Rooney but I have the flexibility to buy them sharpish.

    Opinions?

    Friedel Federici
    Lescott Hangeland Demel Fox Cuellar
    Bale Hazard McClean Britton Taarabt
    Torres Aguero Lambert

2M in bank for Torres to Rooney when convenient.
I’m debating starting with Ashley Cole instead of Lescott and trading back to lescott gw2 and torres to rooney gw3. Thoughts on team or this?

Not sure on Britton. Will he get decent returns? Lambert is a nice differential around here as most ppl seem to be going with graham or petric as their third striker.
Cashley has the possibility of two cleanies. He is in my team. I would try and have both lescott and cashley. With three rotating cheap defenders.

nvm i would have to swap one of my big guys in the midfield to afford it and still have enough for the torres to rooney transfer. Unfortunately Britton is probably the best I can get for 4.5 in the mid which is what I have left

Agree completely and bigger teams if not doing so well then trying to buy their way out of trouble... If you wanted a fairness then surely you should have to begin and finish the season with the same squad, with the exception of free agents.

You don't support them though unless you go to games really.

That's a bit harsh. I can't see my team coz I now live hundreds of miles away from their ground. Doesn't mean a thing. I used to go home and away when I was living back home

That's fine. You used to live near them and so you have a connection to them. Forca has no connection to the sides he supports apart from Croatia as far as I can tell.

Can't do that if you live thousands of miles away.

Which means you're not really supporting them, you just like watching them, like anyone likes watching good football.

It depends where they're from and whether they are fans of other clubs. For me, you can't be a fan of more than one club. You can like more than one club but youre supposed to support you're local club and stick with them. IMO.

The thing that kinda gets me is that I live in Wales and most people here who I meet support English clubs. Personally I don't get that. I do believe you should support your local club first and foremost but that's just my opinion

Well I live in South Africa and our teams are just rubbish :P. I have supported Man U since i was young (because i was a massive Schmiechel fan).

And whilst i support them above all other teams there are other teams i hope do well, but not better than United. For various reasons.

For instance i "like" Sunderland because my great uncle has been a Sunderland season ticket holder for well over 30 years.

Other teams I have respect for, like Everton and Tottenham because they have done well with their limited resources and cautions approach.

Other teams i have respect for in other leagues are BVB for their giant slaying performances in recent years, and Barca for their phenomenal play style ("Liked" them since Ronaldinho was there).

But i still count myself as a Man U supported because I will support them regardless. Wish i could attend their matches but I simply can't.

Notice how interested people are 😉

Well maybe that's due to the argument above. Interesting one, and for a change I agree with Forca.

get both. I know I often say that, but seriously...

      Collo and Cuellar
      Williams and Hughes

If anyone has better rotations than those, I would gladly hear them.

Just came back after the fight. Taylor you are a hero. Most of you will be British and you're lucky to have had such an amazing Olympics so please understand what a gargantuan moment this is for Ireland. She's done our nation proud.

Committed a probably fairly common faux-pas in the early hours of this morning and, while pretty drunk, tinkered with my team for no real reason! Here's the result.....

    Cech, Vorm

    Gorkss, Terry, Barnett, Cuellar, Vidic

Taraabt, Bale, Ben Arfa, Walters, Ireland

    Aguero, Pogrebnyak, Torres (c)

I don't remember who I switched out but I have 2m in the bank that wasn't there before.

Where have I gone wrong, or is alcohol truly the way forward?

Too much in defence for me and too light in midfield. Too much out of the bottle too. ; p
