You'd better worry about when Dan Burn is back rather than Botman if looking at getting Livramento, and rumours are he's on the bench tonight

Looks like I'll sit tight on Haaland - tempted by Solanke but already burnt two transfers on a Watkins>Darwin>Watkins hokey cokey so not keen to do the same again. Maybe this is the week I sort the goal keeper out? Hopefully will get XI out and then bench both City players next week?

    An interesting article.
It must concern the writer and content creators, they are damaging the game from within.
It must create financial concern to some when the FPL bubble could burst.
Beware of greed and accept most people are sheep and but a few are shepherds.
Social media has made it more easy to influence the masses.
It tends to poison the sheep as well as the shepherds.
I think of Hitler ensuring all Germany could get access to a radio to spread propaganda.
Content creators; be a Gandhi rather than a Stalin.

Probably a -8. Fix what's broken. So Mbuemo >> McAtee. That gets you part of the way. But the -8 comes in with Alvarez/Tsimikas >> Solanke/TAA. Do it over GW17/18 and it's a -4. TAA is overpriced though v. say, Porro or Trippier. I'd fix what's broken first and then assess next week. Or HnR this week and reassess in GW18.

This is the sort of article FFS needs to push more, and there are a handful of decent comments actually related to the article content for once 😛

As boring as "the template" gets, it can equally be labelled "the boring but good, reliable picks" which is the entire point of it. Why gamble with a player when you can stick to someone you know should return.

It's incredibly unlikely to actually win the game due to how much luck you need, so it makes more sense to go with a known method of achieving a good number of points, whether that is to win a mini-league or just finish with a high rank.

The real "problem" if there is one, is that previously before content creators were around, a huge chunk of FPL players who didn't take the game that seriously didn't seem to realise that 'slow and steady wins the race'. So instead they went with the rogue options which in the long run aren't very wise to pick, so it was easier for more 'engaged' managers to go with 'boring but good, reliable picks' and we all did well at the end of the season.

The real problem is the format and rules of FPL make it hard to go against boring but reliable.

There are quite a few articles near the end of each FPL season titled "How would you change FPL" etc.

The fix is to create LOADS more ways to win points, so many ways that you actually do have equal chance going one route than another, this would lead to people being willing to not go with a single template, but you'd maybe have 3-4 'templates' each using different types of players or going for different types of points.

FPL won't do that though and it would "make the game too complicated".

      All you say is true.
I feel however, not only the picks are template but so is the game,
FPL Towers avoid touching something that is not broken and simplicity gets followers,
The 5 sub rule, injuries' created by too much football and worst of all, extended minutes should force a reaction with the powers that be. Sadly, it won't.

I don't mind the "boring but good" picks, but if we're talking about these "content creators" we need to be realistic in noting how often a very large portion of them conveniently end up doing the exact same moves on a number of weeks. I think someone here posted a list of about 10 or so that all captained the same player, brought in Dubravka and then maybe 70% of them made a second move that was also the same. Feeling like you need to play it safe to an audience? Fine, it wouldn't be for me (why not do your own thing and stand out?) but if that's what you feel works then no issues there. But if the main contenders are all doing the exact same moves, even down to the player being transferred out? Something a bit different happening there

I'm not sure I agree there is any sort of joined up conspiracy in what to do. There may well be some copy-cat style sheep behaviour where 'content creators' are watching and listening to others so an element of group think occurs and they just reinforce each others selections.

I'd personally say though that this is simply a result of the current game rules. The 'template' is a template because those are logically the most sensible picks. I'd say Dubravka was a sensible pick, ignoring any group think, it just made sense to go with him based on price and defensive stats for Newcastle. You didn't need to be a 'content creator' to end at that conclusion.

        1. Sharkytect
          • 11 Years

With all of Newcastle's injuries, including Pope's, what made Dubravka such a sensible pick? He's 3.9mil price for a starting keeper, I suppose?

            • 14 Years

Their defensive stats are very good. Currently the stats aren't quite matching the output, but lots of people work on stats.
Cleansheets are not really happening much all over the place, so it's a case of 'best of a bad bunch' and Dubrav is very cheap. So you mix those two together and it becomes sensible.

I think people tend to want changes based on whatever short term tough situation they're in, ultimately it's a well rounded game and clearly popular.

One thing I think they should ban is new teams after week 2. It would be nice to see who got team of the week without all the insecure people who put a new team each week full of players from the first match.

Price rises and falls could be a bit more transparent and dare I say it more extreme.

      1. fusen
        • 14 Years

It's a simple game which is why it is popular. I agree that a lot of proposed changes relate to specific problems affecting the users current rank, but what I'm talking about is changing the rules so you get points from nearly all types of available players.

Why have all Premier League players available to transfer in if the current rules only mean that say 20% of them are sensible to bring in. You need to create rules that give points if you select any of say 80% of players.

Once you do that, and do the hard part of trying to not make a single 'optimal' template, you have a much more varied game.

Totally agree with this view. Find a way of players like Gilmour, Nakamba or Rice to score points apart from scoring goals and assists. With the way data is so easy to collect these days, why not have points for Kms run, blocks, tackles, interceptions, aerial duels won, etc etc? It would open up this game to a totally different dimension and would value a lot more of the players from weaker/smaller teams as well.

FPL used to be more fun when players went up in price 0.2 and 0.3 a week regularly and your team value could become 117m+ if you were willing to gamble more. Forcing players to take hits out of FOMO made the game way more interesting.

It's a misleading article, equating events from nearly 100 years ago in a production environment with an online fantasy sports game where the observers are online not present with the player. If you change rules it'll be same for all players, the template won't go away. If you leave rules the same it's the same for all players. The template won't go away.

      1. fusen
        • 14 Years

I disagree with both points you've made. The observer effect is pretty widely considered to be real and applies in all scenarios which the article does a decent attempt at explaining, even for online games such as this, specifically for content creators with thousands of viewers watching what they do.

Changing the rules to *purposely try to not result in a single template of optimal players* would be definition not create a single template that makes the most sense to use.

They vary in size and color and can change over time due to aging, hormonal changes, and weight gain. While females generally have larger ones than males, the range of potential functions is more or less the same. People may choose to alter the size or appearance with surgery. It may be for cosmetic reasons, gender affirmation, breast reduction, or post-mastectomy reconstruction.

            Nah,

I've just traded out Gabriel in here.

I just can't see their next clean sheet. Well possibly gw20-22.

But they often concede at home and I like the Villa fixtures.

Also Walker in for gw19, 20, 22, 24 etc because I think Palace will possibly score on Saturday. Of course Man City are often busted so it's Walker or an Arsenal defender I suppose.

I could get Gabriel back, I've had him all season and he's 4.9m or even Gusto/Colwill for value but I wanted to freshen it up too.

              Love the team.

and I don't think we will.

No GK, but Henderson mybe back for Brighton.

No Eduoard, Eze, Possibly Hughes, Lerma, Doucoure, Mitchell, No GK (I'd give Whitworth a go, as long as he doesn't do a Perry Suckling when we lost 9-0 to Liverpool only for us to buy Nigel Martyn, and he repleced both him at Club and U21 Country). He was never the same again. Really nice bloke.

Henderson rumoured to be fit for Brighton at home.

May as well put in Walker now.

I think we are just going to give the youth a go and play the defence, as they are the only fit players we have left.

Ozoh always looks good, when i see him play.

    Chelsea news
Gusto is back available for selection.
Nkunku deemed fit by medical staff (now up to poch as to whether he plays)
"Nkunku is set to return to the squad against Sheffield. If everything goes well, he will have some minutes but that's a start.
It's likely to take at least two more sub-appearances before he can start. His first start will probably be against Palace or Luton."

Might be a nice option at the turn of the year then once he's had a few games under his belt

I was him play Brighton in Philadelphia in July, and was all set on him being in GW1 FPL team after that. Such a shame he got injured. It's probably why my season has gone to hell, lol

      Cheers...

Might get Gusto back in last sub...

but remember the manager blamed him for cutting inside or not being disciplined enough as a right back.

Which I think tempers his assists appeal.

Are Chelsea going to keep clean sheets?

Everton fans commented that Sanchez looked poor at the weekend.

Arsenal have just had 1 clean sheet at home, with the win over Man City.

    Similar to last season too.

So it's possibly limited to Forest, Burnley and Sheffield United away in the next 11 matches that there defence will give you anything other than attacking returns.

Maybe Fulham too... if they forget how to score?

Assuming Darwin doesn't start in midweek who would you bench from:

    A) Gordon (FUL)
    B) Watkins (bre)
    C) Palmer (SHU)
    D) Darwin (MAN)

Isn't it so weird we let thoughts define our experience and those thoughts tell us we are a separate individual separate from the Whole and we just believe them without even becoming curious about what a thought is made of When??....When this is seen through....wow....just wow..

So for those of us who haven't yet transferred out Haaland... do we just wait until Friday or are there likely to be adverse price movements (Haaland/Watkins especially) before then?

    1. pricycle
      • 12 Years

Or just take him out anyway as he might just be a sub and then definitely misses the next match?

Has been already but the sensible thing might be to wait.

No Haaland does offer you opportunities, regardless if he plays against Palace.

Easy sell, already sold him. He doesn’t play next week and people will continue to sell him. Hopefully he will go down to 13.9 and will get him back then.

    4. Conners

      Wait until Friday.

The majority will be keeping him and starting him unless we get any concrete news confirming he's out.

The downside of not owning him for a home game against Palace is too high to warrant risking an early transfer.

He’s an easy sell for me if you have Salah (who everyone will captain this week) and don’t have Watkins (who could easily outscore Haaland even on the off chance he starts). Not sure in other circumstances, but it’s not like Pep’s going to confirm he starts, so the only advantage of waiting is if you have any players involved in tonight or tomorrow’s games

I think 1.5m had to sell him this week before a price drop.

      It just who rises?

Not many unless Watkins gets a well-earned rest

    Dubravka Turner
    Taylor Gabriel Cash Kabore Udogie
    Palmer Martinelli Diaby Son Salah
    Darwin Haaland Archer

    1 FT 2.2 ITB.
    A) Archer > Solanke
    B) Archer + Diaby > Watkins + Soucek for -4
    C) Archer + Cash > Solanke + Pau for -4
    D) Diaby + Darwin > Saka + Solanke for -4

No. A striker who only has 4 PL this season none of which have been in the last 6 GW's, and gets rotated (9 starts in 16 games including a benching 2 GWs ago) is far from essential.

    Team is looking wrecked, suggestions?

    Johnstone*

    Andersen Zinchenko Cash
    Diaby salah Foden Gordon Palmer
    Ferguson Isak

    Subs: Areola*, Trippier*, Taylor*, Haaland*

If Haaland does not look good after next presser, I'm considering a -4 to do:
    A. Haaland & Foden > Son & Watkins leaves £5.1m ITB
    B. Haaland & Foden > Son & Solanke leaves £7m ITB

Is the -4 worth it if he's ruled out as need to ship Foden as well or should I just roll and use 2 transfers free next week.

    B. Solanke

Sold Haaland to get Son in case anyone wanna know why some are selling.

No, Trippier has a couple more good fixtures on the horizon after his suspension and Son will be off to Asia cup soon

Luton (A) - Tough fixture for a deflated Newcastle
        Forest (H) - Decent
Liverpool, City, Villa - Not decent.

Son has Everton (H), Brighton (A) and Bournemouth (H) - All decent, and Son could haul in all three before he goes to Asian Cup.

No. His form will return. Missing a game will be well needed rest for him.
