This afternoon’s five-goal Community Shield thriller give Fantasy managers plenty food for thought ahead of the season kick-off next Saturday. Roberto Mancini maintained a 3-4-1-2 formation for the showdown against Chelsea and, with Sergio Aguero failing to have a hand in any of his side’s trio of goals, there will no doubt be a reaction over the next few days as we juggle our City options prior to their home clash with Southampton a week today…

While there is little question that Aguero will continue to flourish in 2012/13, Carlos Tevez’s price tag is starting to sway many the latter’s way. Coming in at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) compared to Aguero’s 11.5, Tevez clearly has the potential to outscore his compatriot in any given Gameweek and with Mario Balotelli still some way short of full match fitness, he is surely set to begin the season alongside Aguero up top. Tevez started last term the dearest of the two but his strop in the Allianz Arena and subsequent lack of game time until the final few weeks of the campaign has seen his price plummet this time round – if he can continue in the same vein as this afternoon’s display, that extra 2.5 saving he affords looks a significant factor in building our squads, though Aguero’s propensity for more explosive returns still looks the best armband option.

Samir Nasri picked up a goal and assist in his role in “the hole” and with David Silva still being eased back into action, the Frenchman could well be handed a starting berth for the Saints game. If Mancini continues with this formation over the course of the upcoming campaign, the position could well yield points aplenty as Nasri demonstrated today. Yaya Toure also served a reminder of his capabilities with a finely taken equaliser – the Ivorian’s deep-lying position could be a worry to his Fantasy suitors; his surges forward tended to come after the break, when Chelsea had been reduced to 10 men.

For Chelsea, much of the talk surrounds the decision to send off Branislav Ivanovic. Certainly, the two-footed lunge looked far from clever and seemed the right decision by the man in black. Ahead of the Blues’ double Gameweek, it seems that he will only miss league action if the FA choose to intervene – a crucial factor for Fantasy managers when assessing our Chelsea options. Certainly, according to the FA website the rulings specify that Ivanovic will avoid an automatic suspension…

“In order to address uncertainty over disciplinary sanctions in pre-season friendlies, sanctions for red cards shown in such fixtures will not now apply to competitive first team games. Any such sanction will apply only in the same competition (i.e. other friendlies including The FA Community Shield).”

They do, however, follow this up with a warning that they still have the ability to step in, should the challenge be deemed enough to warrant intervention…

“However, The FA retains the right to charge players in the most serious of misconduct cases and make sanctions applicable to competitive first-team fixtures if it is felt necessary.”

At present, there is still plenty uncertainty and confusion surrounding any possible suspension. The Reading Official twitter site have tweeted earlier this afternoon that it “looks likely” Ivanovic is out for their trip to Stamford Bridge – both clubs’ second match of the double Gameweek. We plan to clarify this matter this with the FA over the next 24-hours.

Elsewhere, Fernando Torres did his best to tempt investment ahead of his games against Wigan and Reading next week. The Spaniard’s coolly-taken opener will surely see many jump aboard the bandwagon, with even the armband a temptation. Caution is likely to be courted when eyeing up Ramires until the Ivanovic decision becomes clearer – the Brazilian (7.0 in FPL) continued in his recent role on the right of the attacking midfield and supplied the assist for Torres’ strike but was moved to the right-back berth upon the Serbian’s dismissal.

For me, Robson Kanu will be electric this season, but he is a punt.

I'd take Kagawa over Hazard, with United's defensive woes, there is even talk of Carrick at center back..... should free up room for Kagawa if he ever was a doubt for first 11

Kaboul will most likely be backup to Dawson & Vert.

B Kagawa looks like he's been there ages, fits right in. Hazard will take a while to settle in, poor today.
C Up in the air for now, probably rotated a lot with Dawson.

I have got a tentative team to show now, though still not very happy.. RTM pls?

    Friedel - Federici
Hangeland - A Cole - Gorkss (McCartney, Tierney)
Bale - Lampard - Michu- Noble (Kangles or any other 4.5 mid)
    Rooney - Tevez - Bent

My reckoning (not saying its the definitive)
Swansea attack looks decent for a few weeks. coupled with the news that, Bent seems to be in better form under Lambert, so Bent takes precedence over Graham as the third forward. And Michu gets the call in (over N'zogbia). Bent had started playing well last season towards the end before he got injured and was out of action..

YYT is playing deep at times, Silva too expensive for me, Valencia too risky with current ManU defensive doldrums, Demps may not see the light of the day, Pool no way till GW6, with Arsenal, donno who is gonna turn up... all pointing to - >Bale

Lampard (over hazard/Mata) for chelsea mid. he won on coin toss!

Have kept Noble.. not sure if its a good call though. With their recent purchases, Noble may be on bench.. worrying factor?

Forward: Rooney + Tevez (savings over Aguero, plus Balu injured). Not taking Torres as I don't trust him + he is slotted in for a Spain friendly on 15th Aug.. If he plays, then it will be 4 games in a span of 11 days.. Increased rotation risk perceived..

£2.5m is in the bank for upgrading one cheapie defender to any costly defender, once we know THE Italian's mindset.. I want bad-K badly, but too expensive at 7.5! Settling for either Kolo or Zab or Lescott (hopefully they wont score in gw1 and rocket in price). Could well be a ManU defender..

Critique on the thoughts pls.. though not so much on the length of the post! 😉

bent v graham: total coin toss. i don't trust michu but i like nzog, ireland..ish and bannan. lampard no. just no. he's old and a shadow of the player he was. i'd vote mata or maybe hazard. agree wiv the Tevez move but totally disagree wiv yo torres aversion. and for my money maloney over noble. i just think that noble is a good player. whilst maloney is. but he gets hurt more often than a coelocanth. i actually have no idea if coelocanths hurt easy but it's a fun word

Out he goes for Mata/Hazard.. well, still have a week to ponder.. on Nobles vs Maloney - never held Maloney in good faith either.. last season he did nothing special if I remember.. any reason to change that unless Moses goes to Chelsea? Still not going near Torres.. I might even have a coelocanth instead.. lol 😀 thx for the words, Mega..

Zabaleta wasn't rotated the second half of last season. With his history, Richards will probably end up being injured for more than a month.

So Zaba is nailed in the 4-2-3-1. If Milner has the RWB spot in the 3-5-2 then we're hoping Zaba is the furthest right of the back 3.
Lescott Kompany Zaba? Not Kolo in his place or Agger if he signs?

Just as good an option for me, especially with Everton's notorious starts to a season

Currently no. The FA have the authority to intervene if they deem the tackle to be worthy of a ban.

“In order to address uncertainty over disciplinary sanctions in pre-season friendlies, sanctions for red cards shown in such fixtures will not now apply to competitive first team games. Any such sanction will apply only in the same competition (i.e. other friendlies including The FA Community Shield).”

“However, The FA retains the right to charge players in the most serious of misconduct cases and make sanctions applicable to competitive first-team fixtures if it is felt necessary.”

He will be playing next week

Yeah good point. If Torres scores well in the DGW they are (h) to Newcastle in GW2 which would male Torres > Rooney less than straightforward. So you are banking £3m yeah?

RMT m8s, atm I am refraining from Tevez in my belief Aguero is the better captaincy option to rotate with Rooney.

    Foster / Begovic
Zabaleta / Dawson / Tierney / McCartney / 4.0 (possibly Stevens from Villa if I find out hes first choice)
    N'zog / Bale / Nasri / Valencia / Kacaliknic
    Aguero / Graham / Torres

2million bank to swap Torres for Rooney
Dawson is a question mark atm, will see if more info specifically whos announced Spurs captain

    Thx

Where is he nailed on to play? Plus he scores big in spells but frustrates in others. Not one for the start of the season imo.

Thoroughly inconsistent, and to my money (Man U fan) not likely to start the season. I think Valencia will slot in at RM and Young/Nani will fight it out for LM, in which case it's a bit of a toss up between the two but i think young may take the spot.

When/If Nani hits form, then ship him in, and ship him out when he loses it. That's how to play Man U midfield IMO.

Clyne, if just because Nelsen faces City GW3 (when you'll no doubt have a bench full of DGWers. I know I will).
