This afternoon’s five-goal Community Shield thriller give Fantasy managers plenty food for thought ahead of the season kick-off next Saturday. Roberto Mancini maintained a 3-4-1-2 formation for the showdown against Chelsea and, with Sergio Aguero failing to have a hand in any of his side’s trio of goals, there will no doubt be a reaction over the next few days as we juggle our City options prior to their home clash with Southampton a week today…

While there is little question that Aguero will continue to flourish in 2012/13, Carlos Tevez’s price tag is starting to sway many the latter’s way. Coming in at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) compared to Aguero’s 11.5, Tevez clearly has the potential to outscore his compatriot in any given Gameweek and with Mario Balotelli still some way short of full match fitness, he is surely set to begin the season alongside Aguero up top. Tevez started last term the dearest of the two but his strop in the Allianz Arena and subsequent lack of game time until the final few weeks of the campaign has seen his price plummet this time round – if he can continue in the same vein as this afternoon’s display, that extra 2.5 saving he affords looks a significant factor in building our squads, though Aguero’s propensity for more explosive returns still looks the best armband option.

Samir Nasri picked up a goal and assist in his role in “the hole” and with David Silva still being eased back into action, the Frenchman could well be handed a starting berth for the Saints game. If Mancini continues with this formation over the course of the upcoming campaign, the position could well yield points aplenty as Nasri demonstrated today. Yaya Toure also served a reminder of his capabilities with a finely taken equaliser – the Ivorian’s deep-lying position could be a worry to his Fantasy suitors; his surges forward tended to come after the break, when Chelsea had been reduced to 10 men.

For Chelsea, much of the talk surrounds the decision to send off Branislav Ivanovic. Certainly, the two-footed lunge looked far from clever and seemed the right decision by the man in black. Ahead of the Blues’ double Gameweek, it seems that he will only miss league action if the FA choose to intervene – a crucial factor for Fantasy managers when assessing our Chelsea options. Certainly, according to the FA website the rulings specify that Ivanovic will avoid an automatic suspension…

“In order to address uncertainty over disciplinary sanctions in pre-season friendlies, sanctions for red cards shown in such fixtures will not now apply to competitive first team games. Any such sanction will apply only in the same competition (i.e. other friendlies including The FA Community Shield).”

They do, however, follow this up with a warning that they still have the ability to step in, should the challenge be deemed enough to warrant intervention…

“However, The FA retains the right to charge players in the most serious of misconduct cases and make sanctions applicable to competitive first-team fixtures if it is felt necessary.”

At present, there is still plenty uncertainty and confusion surrounding any possible suspension. The Reading Official twitter site have tweeted earlier this afternoon that it “looks likely” Ivanovic is out for their trip to Stamford Bridge – both clubs’ second match of the double Gameweek. We plan to clarify this matter this with the FA over the next 24-hours.

Elsewhere, Fernando Torres did his best to tempt investment ahead of his games against Wigan and Reading next week. The Spaniard’s coolly-taken opener will surely see many jump aboard the bandwagon, with even the armband a temptation. Caution is likely to be courted when eyeing up Ramires until the Ivanovic decision becomes clearer – the Brazilian (7.0 in FPL) continued in his recent role on the right of the attacking midfield and supplied the assist for Torres’ strike but was moved to the right-back berth upon the Serbian’s dismissal.

    City aren't going to play 3-5-2. Go to their website (link on the FFS twitter feed) and watch the Mancini reaction video, 40 seconds in.

    Cabbage's advice of the day - save your RMT until GW2.

    We can all get the same 15 players. If anybody thinks your team is legendary, they can copy it man-for-man.

    Stop posting RMT - and wait until GW2 where people can't do that (without WC / hits).

    4.0 still in the bank. Torres -> Rooney in GW2.

        Pog seems ok for the DGW. Tempted to go for Guthrie -> Walters, but that leaves only 2.0 to get in Rooney. I'd like the option to switch Yaya for Sig, VDV, Mata, Hazard as they hit form.

    can someone explain the necessity of having a "well-balanced" team, positionally speaking? isn't it better to cram the positions that season-by-season tend to get the highest point totals (as in, FW and MID), rather than spreading it fairly evenly across the lot? i see a lot of people on rmts saying "weak defense", ignoring the fact that there are three reliable big hitters up top for example.

      I thought that last season... And then all my rivals with one or two good defenders started to get an extra 12 pts on me every week. At least one preferably two from man city/man utd/Chelsea/spurs in defence is a shrewd move. Also watch out for arsenal this yr... Steve bould is the new assistant manager. .. Can see more clean sheets for the gunners.

        i have terry, rangel, cuellar, hughes and gunter so i don't think i'm too bad in that area, only two 4.5 keepers though. on the flipside, i have torres-->rooney, aguero, tevez, lampard--->bale, kagawa, michu etc...

        true but over the course of a season attacking players tend to get more points than defensive, which suggests that the probability of a goal/assist from those players is higher than a clean sheet from the defensive players, no?

    After today my team still has Torres , lampard and ageuro and still doesnt have tevez. I still plan to switch Torres for Rooney. The main thing I've learnt from today is that zab is a great way into the man city defence for the next month and Ramires is worth a punt.

          also true. It's tough to call.

          My defence atm is

          Green, Davis

          Kolarov, Williams, Hangeland, Cuellar, Saylor

          I have Lampard and Torres, with Mata/VdV. Issue with Ramires is he makes it hard to get that 2nd big hitter (Nani/Dempsey/Walcott) in, but he would allow me to upgrade a keeper to DDG

        Zab surely wouldn't play CB ahead of Lescott, or LB ahead of Clichy/Kolarov though? Seems more of a straight bout for RB/RWB with Richards unless Mancini does try 3 at the back and one of them slips in there. But even that will be a stretch if they sign a new CB (e.g. Agger).

    Great goals in todays game. Yaya is lethal from outside the box. Tevez looking sharp also.

    Price aside whom do you think will score more points in the opening 5 games.

    Yaya or nasri?

      I'd say Yaya is safer but Nasri has a greater range.

      Yaya to get 20-28, Nasri to get 14-40. If you fancy a gamble, go for Nasri

    I have 0.5 spare which change should I make?

    A) Friedel --> De Gea
    B) Hughes --> Hangeland
    C) Pienaar --> Ramires

      A imo. The rest are sideways moves, Pienaar been looking good pre-season and I think he's a season keeper at that price.

    So with so much rotation likely this season, what strategy are folks going for - picking only nailed on players who might score steady thru the season or taking a risk with a couple who will almost certainly feature now and then but likely to score big?

      A balance doesn't seem like a bad way to go. Majority of nailed on players but a few flair picks worth taking a chance on.

      It's true, no one know's much about how well players will perform. However, people still have injured/non-starting players in their team, an RMT is the best way for them to find out about this.

      Having said that, my RMTs have completely stopped over the last few weeks (due to the announcement of our H2H leagues)

    Nearly final team

    FEDERICI FREIDEL
    A COLE HANGELAND CLARK STEVENS CHICO
    TOURE LAMPARD SIGURDSSON NOBLE DYER
    TORRES TEVEZ POG

    WITH 4.5 MILLION IN BANK FOR TORRES-ROONEY AND POG-DEFOE WEEK 2

    Not comfortable with 2 villa defenders and want to keep Clark. So am opting for a 4.0 mil West Ham defender rotate well with villa.

    Does anyone know West Ham well? Who has a role nailed down? OBRIEN(played 4 preseason)DEMEL(5) POTTS (5) I think.

    Can anybody help me out?
