While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

    I think i'll avoid tevez and stick with this.

    Ddg, Federici
    Ivan, Williams, Saylor, Gunter, Cuellar
    Lampard, McClean, Yaya, Pilkington, Maloney
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

    2.5 in the bank for Lampard and Torres > Rooney and Bale

    What do ye think?

      It's nice. I've gone down the route of downgrading Kun and strengthening the D. Looks much nicer to me.

        I think Kun will be the top points scorer this year imo. My thinking is that if i get tevez and kun explodes it will be difficult to get him but the opposite is easy if tevez progves to be the better option.

      but see what you can do with tevez instead of aguero? upgrading pilkington, maloney and your defense.
      can eaasily made up the points difference between tevez and Kun, if not more

      I like your team and I am going a fairly similar route. But I am currently thinking of getting Bale in now instead of Yaya. Because Yaya might sit deep and do nothing. Plus Newcastle seem weakened by injuryes and You could avoid a hit that way as it is not a must that you have to get Lampard out against NEW. That would of course mean that you would have to downgrade Mclean or Pilk. But I think this is a good idea.

    repost from deadzone last night!

    Aguero v Tevez

    DDG/Freddy
    Ivan(Cole)/Zabaleta/Hughes/Gorkss/Tierney
    Bale/Kagawa/Toure/Ramires/Kancaniklic
    Torres/Tevez/Graham

    2.0 in bank for Rooney

    My thinking is that the only risk of picking Tevez over Aguero is if you do not have a viable (C) option. Rooney certainally gives you a strong captain from GW2-5. That said, if you plan on (c) Rooney for those 3 weeks you might as well save the 2.5 million and pick tevez.

    GW1 (C) Torres
    Captian options GW 2 – 5

    Rooney – FUL/sot/WIG
    MCI – liv/QPR/sot

    imo Rooney is the better (c) option collectively in those 3 GW’s. This make sense?

              Really want a Chelsea mid but by the sounds of it options are running thin!

              Mata and Hazard struggling in CC, Lampard playing deep and unlikely to start both games, maybe I'll look at Ramires, would free up a bit of money too...

      I agree. Particularly interested in Ramires--he can play without rest, and he kept popping forward yesterday--almost had an assist. If he keeps getting game time he could be a real bargain.

    I think i am pretty set:

    De Gea Federichi
    Zabaleta Ivanovic Cueller Demel Clyne
    Nasri Lampard VDV Taarabt Noble
    Tevez Torres Graham

    2m in the bank.

    Just need to decide on what big 2 midfielders to go for:

    Nasri/Kagawa
    Lampard/Walcott

    In order to start Pog for DGW, I need to bench one from Nolan or Pienaar as most weeks I will be playing 3-5-2 with Pog first sub. Which one shall I leave out? Currently starting Nolan as Pienaar plays Utd...

    Or take a big risk play both and bench Valencia, but then have no Utd attacking cover...?

        He did okay against them the last time they met and that was at Old Trafford. All of United's defensive problems will not be solved by the return of Vidic. Evra remains a liability.

    I need to save 0.5m from somewhere to get this team - best option?

    a) Mata -> Lamps
    b) Noble -> Guthrie
    c) Schwarzer -> Jaask
    d) Kagawa/Nasri -> Yaya
    d) Something else

    Schwarzer, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, Gunter
    Mata, Bale, Pienaar, Kagawa/Nasri, Noble
    Torres(c), Tevez, Graham

    Bank 2.0m (Torres -> Rooney in GW2)

        Ivan probably goes in GW3 - don't mind playing him for an easy double and then NEW at home. Thanks for the idea though - I think Kos is a bargain, although our fixtures aren't that great to start with, and there is a chance he could face some rotation from Mert

      Kagawa has been United's best pre-season player and Nani didn't start games towards the end of last season. it was Young and Valencia. Not to mention Nani hasn't ever had a long run in the team
