While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

Unless Lescott is confirmed for KO then I could see myself goin with A Cole and 4 cheaper defenders.

A Cole > Lescott in GW3 is always a possibility. Shouldn't miss out on too many points!

Well I think they will probably get 1 CS in 2 games, something I expect Chelsea to match. I've always planned to go with both but with Lescott being a doubt I'm just not sure.

Go for both. I think I might start Aguero, Tevez, Torres and then see whom to drop in order to get Rooney in. By GW3 Torres and Tevez could easily become Rooney and Graham/Petric if that looks the way to go.

I think Mata is more likely to get more game time in the DGW and the rest of the season, and he is also on some set pieces. Lampard is getting old now and he has an International on the 15th so I dont see him starting 3 games in 8 days or something.

Both looked good and linked up well together.
Cazorla probably looked better FPL wise as he created quite a few chances and almost scorer + has corners.
Although Walcott doesnt always have to look dangerous to get in the points!

That's the EXACT same dilemma I have. I've been on B for aaaaaaaaaaages but A just seems better.

I don't plan on captaining Aguero in GW1 I don't think so the fact that he's a safer option than Tevez is irrelevant, and the fact that I'd probably get rid in GW4 also makes me think Tevez is a better option.

depends on how heavy/light your mid is.
I would try to have no more than 1 midfielder lower than 6.5m to have more flexibility in the team. credit to canadian football for this insightful thought

I will give you some free advice. Tevez is a great option for cheap Man City coverage.....until it comes to the GW's where you want to captain a City player - then, I am not sure I would trust Tevez with the precious 2x multipier: he is never going to be far away from a sub appearance with Balotelli around.

lost on last page - so forgive reask (but sure this is something many of us as novices are asking)

What the overall lack of love / confidence in Hazard ?
I have not yet managed to watch yesterdays game (so guess that may give the answer)

If Chelsea did not have a DGW would anyone actually consider a a midfield option from them ?
Is Hazard the 3rd choice behind Mata / Lampard ? and if so why

(realise many questions are asked here, but few answred due to the RMTs) so sorry in advance

OK, so i am going to NYC for 2 weeks early Wednesday morning and want to sort my team out finally before i go... so 2 questions:

Q1) Anyone any recommendations for good eateries NYC?

Q2) Thoughts on this lot... 99% finalised until i hear what u have to say 🙂

    Federici,
    A.Cole, Lescott, Hughes,
    Lampard, Mata, Noble, Guthrie,
    Aguero (C), tevez, Rooney,

    Subs: Given, fabio, britton, barnett.

    - Need 3 x city as they are going to go absolutely mental v south. Like if Susan Boyle and Michael Jackson had a baby mental. Tevez and Aguero will get double figures each. I think Aguero is still the better pick.
    - Have chosen Rooney as i feel he is twice the value of Torres any day. I still think he will beat torres score this GW.
    - Mata and Lampard both DGW and i couldnt choose between,

    Any thoughts?

I like this team. I personally would start with Torres instead of Rooney, and then see what kind of switch makes the most sense after the DGW, but you explained your preference--I don't agree, but reasonable minds can differ.

2 big mids but no mid priced. Midfield suffers because of those forwards

It's all about luck with the midfield for Chelsea. Both could do well or do fook all squared. Fattie well rested over summer and he is in my team.

Even Fergie probably doesn't know at this point! It does seem a possibility though hopefully he will give up some team news before the weekend.

I'd say it's quite likely, Jones and Smalling both injured and Rafael just back from the Olympics.

here it is, my first - and hopefully last - RMT of the season :

    DDG, Federici
Kaboul, A Cole, Rangel, McCartney, Fonte
    Lamps, Bale, Yaya, Noble, Guthrie
    Aguero, Torres, Pogrebnyak

2.0M in the bank to do Torres->Rooney GW2

I'd like to upgrade Pogrebnyak to Graham, but for that I'd have to downgrade Lamps to Ramires for example.

    What do you think?

Thinking about it, Chelsea haven't been scoring many goals, but has been keeping many cleanies under RDM. maybe Tosey is right in having triple chelsea defence!

Not likely to park the bus against the lesser sides though. That said I have double Chelski def atm.

Defo think defensive assets for Chelsea are better than the attacking ones for the reasons you mentioned but I don't think I'll double up! Will probably have A Cole + Torres/Mata/Lamps then swap the attacking player for Rooney/on form midfielder

We have been totally shocking at the back pre season. While you may argue pre season isn't always a great indicator of things to come, it's hard to see how against any decent team we won't concede at the mo

Not sure if I should get a Spurs midfielder from the off now. Would certainly save a future transfer. Need Fulham and Swansea coverage likewise.

    a) Aguero, Graham, Bale, Ramires, Kacaniklic

    b) Aguero, Petric, Mata, Michu, Noble

    c) Tevez, Graham, Mata, Bale, Kacaniklic

I feel like all it takes will be Miachi to get in the team at Wigan and he will pretty much be the best 5.0 midfielder on offer. Fighting talk?

The 5m midfield spot is getting pretty cramped these days! Miyachi is class it looks nicer having him in there than Noble or Maloney.
