While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in β€œthe hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

This whole Tevez v Aguero debate is abit of a head scratcher. They way I see it is this:

    1. Tevez, fit and on form, will rival Aguero for points, providing he plays.
    2. In terms of game time, he's secure for the first few weeks at least, and if he performs, longer.
    3. Look at ownership between the two. If Tevez explodes his low ownership/price will rocket compared to Aguero, who may fall as a result.

    4. A big difference is that extra 2.5m, it really makes my team look a whole lot better!!

Sod it, I'm taking the risk.

podolski is a gamble, feel like he would be playing out of his goalscoring position he was in last year, did u see him in the euros on the left hand side? he failed to influence the game at all...

maybe consider petric or graham as cheaper options and upgrade allen?

Thanks for the thoughts about expensive defenders and their potential values.

One point to add tho is that last season Kompany may have been the highest scorer, but Baines & Vermalen were injured for quite some time, Baines returned 178 previously.

It is a gamble, but then Baines, Vermalen & Vertongen should really get some attacking points as well as the cleansheets

He should start the first couple games, but can't see him starting every match once Silva is fit. I went for Toure instead as he's more nailed on and the 0.5m I save gives me much more options for future transfers.

Trying to decide between A & B.... thoughts?

    A:

    DE GEA & Ruddy
    Ivanovic, CLICHY, Williams, Clyne, Gunter
Mata, BALE, Y Toure, Allen, Frei
    Tevez, Rooney, GRAHAM

    (£0 left)

    B

    FRIEDEL & Ruddy
    Ivanovic, RAFAEL, Williams, Clyne, Gunter
Mata, LARSSON, Y Toure, Allen, Frei
    Tevez, Rooney, TORRES

    (£0 left)

I'm also toying with the idea of starting with D Bent - Villa's opening fixture list looks ok and Lambert plays expansive football...

    Hi lads,

Just wondering if anybody know what's the story with Moses for the start of the season? Is he on his way out? Just read on here Wigan are close to sighing Ryo. Does this mean Moses' departure is imminent? Was going to take a punt on him for the start of the season.

And if you are going to WC early, and are looking for a 4.5m, may I suggest Marveaux. Barfa is unlikely to be fit for the weekend, and even if he is, there are doubts over cabeye, ba, and cisse. Marveaux would probably come in for any of these. So he will likely start, and if he does well, he oculd keep his place. He came to us with a BIG reputation. Mrs China Mag is planning to WC in the first international break and is going to take the gamble.

He's not going to get his way with all of the free kicks and corners this year and might not play 90 mins every game.

On an earlier page you said DDG was an awful pick. WHy is that? I thought Lindegaard's recent outing made DDG look more reliable? Is it just your lack of faith in him as a player?

MUN, have fair fixtures - but not excellent. DDG is expensive. Lindegaard is a threat. DDG also made a howler.

He won't be going anywhere near mine. πŸ™‚

          Looks pretty good, but Turner?

          And also, it's £0.5m over budget! πŸ˜†

          How about this?

          Schwarzer/Davis.
          Williams/Gunter, Tomkins/Cuellar.

I looked at Schwarzer. Prefer Foster.

Turner will be the main source of headed goals at set pieces, imo.

This kind of question usually annoys me but I really don't know what to do for my Chelsea attacking cover for GW1.

Rooney's bad fixtures and the doubts over the roles many of the 9m+ midfielders will play has me torn between Torres, Lampard and Mata. The fact I don't fancy either Mata or Lamps is surely a sign I should get Torres, but I'm leaning towards starting with Rooney and don't know who I'd replace Lamps with (already have Bale)

Def play Torres due to DGW, as long as you have money to upgrade nothing to lose.

Maybe have Ramieres instead and upgrade elsewhere?
