While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

By jove I think I've got it!

Jaaskelanen (Given - rotating H/A fixtures)
Rangel - A Cole - Hughes (Clyne, Demel)
Kagawa - Bale - Carzola - Hoilett (Guthrie)
Tevez - Ba - Torres (To be swapped with Rooney GW2)

I was thinking that I still have a couple options however.

    Given/Hughes or Foster/Hangeland?
    Ba or Defoe for GW1?
    Carzola or another 9m mid?
    Hoilett or Michu?

Yeah, hold the wildcard for as long as possible in the first few weeks. Now is the time to be doing the calculations that one GWs worth of information won't change.

Save the WC for when you really need it. No point picking a team for one week. You've effectively got a WC now for GW1, so put it to good use and plan ahead for a few weeks into the season.

Had this plan myself for 2 weeks. Then I changed my mind to week 3 wildcard - but it's not worth it.

Chelsea aren't playing well enough ( poor at the back ) and City it's difficult to pick who will get the points.

I've decided I'll save it, surely we'll get a good wildcard DGW later in the season ( end of last year perfect example, everyone on here who WC'ed got 130-160). I just can't see week 1 havin the same potential.

maloney could take a few penos(depending on who else is on the pitch).

from what i saw towards the end of last season, maloney seems to be involved in most of the attacks and often cuts inside (3 goals, 3 assists from 12 games isn't bad at all)

ryo, on the other hand, wasnt too involed(directly) in the goals bolton scored. spends tooo much time on the flanks

The Aguero v Tevez debate is a good one. Personally, I see Aguero as Mancini's Number One striker..he should get the most game time (although we must not forget that we were all moaning last season that he got subbed after 70 mins most weeks before Christmas and then went on a long run without an away goal! Maybe we are all still influenced by the 95th minute of the last day of the season!)

I'm still with Tevez though! Even if Ag scores 5-10 more goals over the season, the debate is also about what u do with the extra 2.5 millkion and/or if you chose Ag over Tev, how well the lesser player does who you will be foreced to own.

I agree, and nobody seems to remember that Aguero is the Mancini's main man because Tevez had a strop. I remember watching a City match at the start of last season and thinking Tevez was the main man, but this Aguero guy looked like a good second fiddle (OK, I'm not much of an expert). The point is that a fit, available, and docile Tevez could easily be the main man.

I'm with Tevez. We all know he had issues last season and wasn't wired up right, but his valuation of 11m at the start of last season is testament to his previous form, and yesterdays perfomance coupled with his apparent newly found optimisim and improved fitness sells it for me.

    Federici (de Gea)
Lescott, Hangeland, Evra, (Shawcross, Taylor R)
El Ahmadi, Noble, Bale, Ramires (Moses)
    Tevez, Torres, Pogrebnyak

I’ve got £3.5m in the bank for the Rooney GW2 transfer.

I'm taking punts on El Ahmadi and Moses. Pogrebnayk is just to see what happens. If he doesn't perform I've got £1m to upgrade to Graham if needed.

Chances of SWP getting a starting role? Few goals pre season and I just need a 5.5er for the first two weeks. Already have Dyer, and with Ireland looking prone to rotation the best I can see is McAnuff, or maybe even Scholes.

Kelly isn't nailed on for Fulham, Reither will play instead
Hughes would be nailed on at CB for the same price but a slight injury worry for GW1

Doubt Rafael is nailed on after playing so much in the olympics

Mariappa doesn't seem to be the best pick for reading, Gunter more nailed on according to most reading fans

Kaboul not nailed on for Tottenham, Dawson might play

Zabaleta is pretty much nailed on for about a month a 6.0 for Man City
