Welcome to Eliteserien Fantasy 2024! It’s brilliant to see so many newcomers to the game, so I thought I’d try to put together a beginner’s guide of sorts to help get you oriented. Just bear in mind that I am very much included in the ‘beginner’ bracket myself…

I won’t spend much time covering the game format here as it should be immediately familiar to FPL players, with just a few twists on the chips:

  • β€˜Attack! Attack!’ – double points for all your forwards
  • β€˜Rich Uncle’ – a free hit chip with unlimited budget for that Gameweek
  • The self-explanatory β€˜Two Captains’

The main aim of this article is to provide a basic orientation with Eliteserien’s top (and bottom) clubs and an overview of the initial schedule, which features early blanks and doubles.

BOOKIES’ ODDS TO WIN TITLE

So, first up, let’s have a look at the odds of winning the title this season, to give a rough idea of the expected hierarchy:

  1. BodΓΈ/Glimt 2.15
  2. Molde 4.00
  3. Brann 4.50
  4. Viking 15
  5. Rosenborg 21
  6. LillestrΓΈm 25
  7. Sarpsborg 30
  8. TromsΓΈ 100
  9. Odd 150
  10. StrΓΈmsgodset 150
  11. Haugesund 300
  12. HamKam 300
  13. Fredrikstad 300
  14. Sandefjord 300
  15. Kristiansund 500
  16. KFUM Oslo 750

BodΓΈ/Glimt and Molde, fresh off their European adventures during the offseason for Norway, occupy the top two spots. A BodΓΈ/Glimt victory would secure their fourth title in the last five seasons, while Molde won in 2022 & 2019.

Brann have had a much more turbulent recent history: third in 2018, relegated to the First Division in 2021, promoted in 2022 and second on their return to the Eliteserien last year.Β Β

Of the three promoted sides, minnows KFUM Oslo are making their first-ever appearance in the Eliteserien and this is clearly reflected by the bookies’ odds. Kristiansund return after just one season in the First Division, while Fredrikstad are fancied to be a slight cut above at joint 11th.

FIXTURE DIFFICULTY

Next, let’s have a look at a fixture ticker for the first eight Gameweeks (source: https://www.viewfantasystats.com/eliteserien/fdr-planner/)

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The predicted top three – BodΓΈ, Molde and Brann – also sit atop the fixture ticker for the opening eight Gameweeks.

A Double Gameweek 3 for Brann and Molde, aligned with appealing fixtures before and after, makes these two clubs an excellent place to begin your draft. If your initial strategy is to attack the Double Gameweek, you might also want to consider supplementing Brann & Molde double/triple-ups with the mid-priced options from Odd and HamKam.Β

EARLY CHIP?

The early Double Gameweek also presents an opportunity to deploy one of your chips. Since Molde and Brann players are quite expensive, Rich Uncle could be an option to enable a frontline that includes last season’s top scorer BΓ₯rd Finne (BRA, 11.5m) and Molde talisman Fredrik Gulbrandsen (11m).

Alternatively, β€˜Rich Uncle’ could be held for Double Gameweek 10, which includes BodΓΈ, Brann, Rosenborg and TromsΓΈ.

β€˜Attack! Attack!’ is another option for Double Gameweek 3, as the current template frontline appears to be Finne, Gulbrandsen and Kirkevold (HAM, 6m). Odd forward BΓΈrven (7.5m) looks a promising alternative to Kirkevold if you want to triple up on doublers. Viking’s Salvesen (8.5m) has been banging in preseason, although tough fixtures BodΓΈ and Brann in GWs 2 & 3 may be slightly off-putting.Β

ATTACK V DEFENCE

As always, when using a fixture ticker with just one colour per game, it’s worth considering where defensive difficulty and attacking difficulty are flattened.

To help identify the teams which might be, for example, a good fixture for your attackers but a bad fixture for your defenders, I’ve also put together a colour-coded chart of goals and goals conceded last season:

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The left-hand column presents the team in order of goals conceded to highlight fixture difficulty for attackers, while the right-hand column orders teams by goals scored as a metric for defensive fixture difficulty.

It’s worth noting that Viking and Sarpsborg 08 look like quite appealing fixtures for your attackers but much less so for your defenders. At the opposite extreme, Haugesund and StrΓΈmsgodset appear to be pretty solid defences but struggle in attack.

WHERE TO FIND STATS

As for the players, I’m far from the level of familiarity required to write a comprehensive watchlist. However, the official Fantasy site does allow you to sort by goals, assists, clean sheets, bonus points etc, which can be supplemented by further data from sites like Transfermarkt and Whoscored.

I’ve also come across a massively helpful pre-season minutes tracker here (it also notes goals and assists).

COMMUNITY MINI-LEAGUES

That’s pretty much it from me.

I’ll just conclude with a couple of mini-leagues to join (thanks to Mullered in Maenam and Mince N Tatties for running these):

See you below the line!

It’s the norm again with Soltvedt if he comes on probably score it’s a case of really no choice but to keep him in starting 11 and take the lows with the highs . But good to see Hogh starting, let’s hope the break has helped his fitness out .

I sold Soltvedt going into this Runde. Mins are all over the place and returns have felt super fortunate. B/G away next with two blank gws in the next six for Brann. Doesn't seem great that.

Best replacements for the Austrian mids? I'm thinking 2 from Foden, Jude, Simons, Ruiz, and Musiala. WC in semis so eliminations don't matter.

Same decision here. Got it on Tripic at the moment but thought he would figure a little higher on this list. Think Molde look over their wobbly form with Møller Dæhli back. Tough to call between Eikrem/Eriksen now that the latter is back in the 9 role.

Well if Southgate has been terrible, Martinez is up there as well for managerial clown of the tournament.

His persistent use of Ronaldo through the whole tournament has been embarrassing. He is old, slow and way past his best and shouldn't be playing. Should be a sub at best. He has had no impact whatsoever in any of the games. Him getting all those minutes while Jota sits on the bench is quite frankly absurd.

And then there is the other matter of taking Bruno off, one of their best players and best pen takers. They then go on to lose the shootout after one of the subs that came on misses.

How does Martinez get to be manager of the national team? Absolutely mind boggling.

At this level, you need to have the balls to make big decisions and he doesn't have any. Leaving Ronaldo on for both 120 mins and leaving the likes of Ramos and Jota on the bench is criminal.

      Plus & Minus

      Positive
Southgate has managed to qualify for the tournaments & got us out of group stages
& into the later stages of tournaments & will be view as a success.

      Negative
      1. Will not change within game like Croatia & Italy when changes for formation needed
      2. Will not use subs when five allowed in 90mins & another allowed in extra time all other teams use this against us
      3. Will not drop players out of form - some players in his starting team not droppable

After resigned to losing the other night today will be a bonus not expecting anything
but hearing strong rumour of a 3-4-3 system today sounds good - cannot get any worse - matches up against the Swiss

      4. However, Press or Southgate this morning announcing the starting eleven - no - only let opposing managers
officially know 60/90 mins before hand

  12. The Mentaculus

Løvik trolling me more than anyone else I can remember the last few weeks. Had a lot of money and Haugen was out so bought after that haul against Odd despite thinking Stenevik looked just as good. Stenevik gets three consecutive attacking returns while Løvik gets me one point and didn't start the last game before the break, despite Haugen still being out. Sell Løvik to play the fixtures with Norheim's double and the former gets back-to-back double digit hauls.

Despite all that and not having Tripic I've somehow gone from 6.1k to 1.8k since the restart. Good captaincy choices but big swings of luck with the Tripic injury and Haugaard vs. Ruud Tveter from the spot. Finne and Salvesen still awful value but all the other strikers are either out of form or injury prone.

Did Soltvedt→Simenstad to free up enough for Tripic but if he's out I might have to just get a Molde defender back, thought Haugen would at least be back in the squad by now.

      • 4 Years

I really like Løvik but got burned very early - started with Stenevik, then sold him for Løvik GW2, and also was under the delusion that he might start ahead of Haugen when all fit anyway...

Not sure about Tripic yet; NRK commentary just said he must have felt something so I guess there wasn't a specific indicent/impact, more likely muscular

Glimt have apparently received a 170m offer for Grønbæk from an unspecified European club.

Can't find much in the way of rumours online - suggestions of Charlotte FC from Jan 24 but the fee is way lower. I see Leicester were injured last year - think he'd make an excellent replacement for Dewsbury-Hall so I wonder if that could be it... might be an FPL option soon?

Salveson is such a content creator pick...continues to be bought, price going up, only 1 goal in last 6 gws, crap points per match

    Xg/fixtures must be be good

Lack of options up front... I went for Sæter as my Høgh replacement but he's largely dismissed as 'kjeks' (biscuit, i.e. made of...) on the Norwegian forum

Yeah looking at him also, surely he starts after two 30mins, we'll know lineup anyway

Høgh, Sæter, Lehne Olsen, Gulbrandsen either injured or injury prone, Finne's minutes not the best and two blanks coming up. Three keepers and five defenders have scored more points than any striker as it stands. Salvesen is at least fit and seems nailed, anyone know if he's on pens while Tripic is out?

My impression of Salvesen has always been that he's very shot happy, sometimes too much so when he get the ball in central areas, and the eye test suggests the play is passing him by at the moment. Lots of attacking midfielders capable of keeping the ball high up the pitch and doing the build up for Viking. Maybe doesn't suit Salvesen to be in a crowded box so much.

I think what's happened before may have no bearing on the semi-finals, I'm backing good wins for France and England.

Got Tripic, Bjorlo and that donkey Teveter.

Keeping Tripic but Tveter to Nordas likely this week. Now do I keep Bjorlo given he misses next two games or just play defender and save the extra transfer. Berg is an option but he won’t keep scoring will he ?

Who's the defender? Bit tricky to know what to do with Fredrikstad players since it's hard to judge this apparent downturn in form with games marred by early RCs. They did start very brightly against Kristiansund & looked totally dominant up to that point. Think I'm hanging in with my triple up, although benching Stray Molde v Molde. I think Berg benefitted heavily from Brann playing 432 after their RC; Glimt overran the midfield so his 5 shots were probably a season-high for him

        Defender Valsvik at LSK.

Think I agree with you on Berg so might avoid and carry two transfers into next week.

Could get Lovik for a defender and downgrade Tveter to generate cash but think I prefer the Nordas move.

Nothing wrong with playing Valsvik any week.

I'm selling Markovic over Bjørlo. Sandefjord have Glimt this week, then two blanks in the next five while Bjørlo has four consecutive home games when he returns, no blanks as it stands for Fredrikstad.

Grønbæk bid accepted. But apparently there's still a chance he plays this weekend:

"In recent days, much has been written about Albert Grønbæk and his future in Bodø/Glimt. On Wednesday, AN and Nettavisen learned that Glimt had accepted a giant bid for the Dane - an agreement that could have a total package of around NOK 170 million.

In that case, it will be a record for the sale of a player from the Eliteserien.

Despite this, Grønbæk has not left Bodø yet. Glimt expert Freddy Toresen believes there are good chances of seeing the Dane in the All Yellows' squad when Glimt travels south to face Sandefjord on Saturday evening.

    - Albert Grønbæk is still in Bodø and trained today with Bodø/Glimt. We know there is a match against Sandefjord this weekend. Nobody in Bodø/Glimt will confirm whether Albert Grønbæk is in that squad, but I don't think he'll be heading to France to start his medical down there until sometime next week. That is my prediction, says Toresen.

I will not be surprised if Grønbæk is on the plane south with the team on Friday. He trained today, it will be exciting to see if he trains tomorrow and it will be exciting to see which squad Bodø/Glimt states will travel."

I'm not sure either tbh. Does seem like there's a good chance Saltnes takes over his role in the side. Could plunge straight in there, or I might go for Ørjasæter now (who I've had my eye on for a while) and see how Glimt look / setup without him first

Ørjasæter in and (K) for me. We know he's starting, Rosenborg still avoiding clean sheets. Grønbæk has been great for me but don't want to risk a cameo ahead of a move.

One argument for Berg over Saltnes is the European qualifiers this month. Wouldn't be surprised if Saltnes had his league minutes managed a little, ditto Eikrem for Molde. Berg more durable.

    Gronbaek is with the squad

During the week, speculation has run rampant as to whether Albert Grønbæk has shown up for the last time in solid yellow, or whether there will be a last dance or two with his teammates in the Eliteserien?

Gaute Helstrup on Albert Grønbæk: "Albert has trained well all week and is in the squad. We should not ignore him starting. He has trained well like the rest of the team."

Really unsure what to do with captaincy now; been making a hash of it lately. Was on Grønbæk but I think it's too risky that he doesn't play / cameos if needed. May go Eriksen but I don't know if that'll be a tight game. Just stuck it on Ørjasæter because... why not? πŸ˜•
