One of the first things any Fantasy manager worth their salt looks for in a new game are the minute variations and variances that they can grasp hold of to give them an edge. This could be an oddity in the scoring system, an interesting edge case with captaincy or chips, or an out-of-position (OOP) player.

As in pretty much every Fantasy game since the dawn of time, Fantasy EFL includes players in positions that may not be quite the same way the fans understand them.

In most instances, this has little to do with the game makers and more due to the data set that powers the game. In Fantasy EFL’s case, it’s Opta. Regardless, it does usually offer interesting opportunities for Fantasy managers.

FANTASY EFL: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN POSITIONS

Given that midfielders earn an extra point per goal to forwards (six v five) and also pick up points for interceptions, then a striker listed as a midfielder offers a route to more points. It’s also a way to cram more attacking assets into your seven-man line-up.

Likewise, getting players who are classed as defenders but playing further up the pitch opens up even more point options for clearances (+1 for every three), blocks (+1 for every two) and tackles (+1 for every two). There’s also the usual advantage of clean sheets and an extra point per goal. Obviously, this is weighed against the loss of points for key passes or shots on target (+1 for two of each).

With almost 2,000 players in the game to choose from, we’ve not managed to trawl through every single team just yet. However, here are a few of the standouts…

FANTASY EFL: THE BEST ‘OUT OF POSITION’ PLAYERS

Fantasy EFL 2024/25: Tips, best players, fixtures + more 1

Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics, one of the most selected players in the game already, is classed as a midfielder, but will very much be playing an attacking role (and finished with 27 goals and four assists last season) if he stays at the club.

Davis Keillor Dunn was also brilliant last season, for Mansfield Town, with 32 goal contributions. He is also in the game as a midfielder, whilst clubmate Aaron Lewis has been playing as a right midfielder but is classed in various places as a full-back and is a defender in Fantasy EFL.

Elsewhere, Junior Dixon for Birmingham City is also classed as a midfielder in the game but really playing as a striker. His team-mate Keshi Anderson is a forward who’ll be playing in the midfield.

Indeed the ‘winger as forward’ transition seems a pretty common one, where Fantasy EFL have clearly taken a different approach to that adopted by Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For instance, popular Leeds United assets Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Georgino Rutter would typically be viewed as midfielders by their fans and some other Fantasy games, but are being classed as forwards here.

Norwich City’s Jon Rowe has also been classified by Fantasy EFL as a forward, despite mainly occupying the left-wing position. Then again, he did score 12 goals for the Canaries in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

The same is true for goal-scoring winger Jack Clarke, a popular selection by Championship and especially Sunderland fans, who likes to spend most of his time on the left-hand side of midfield. In Fantasy EFL, he will be categorised as a forward option.

And also Kayden Jackson, who featured in Ipswich Town’s promotion-winning campaign last season, making 29 appearances, scoring three goals and providing as many assists. He was playing mainly on the right-hand side of midfield but the Derby County new boy is now a forward.

Other out-of-position players include the likes of Jodi Jones (a winger who ended up playing left wing-back for Notts County last year, in as a forward), Derby County’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, and the Burnley trio of Luca Koleosho, Anass Zaroury and Mike Tresor (all traditional wingers but again placed here as forwards).

Suffice to say, we’ll be outlining more ‘OOP’ players from the game in the coming weeks as we find them. You can put this insight to work by picking your Fantasy EFL team now.

If you’ve spotted someone obvious you’d like us to add or just want to have your say on something else for the game, mail FantasyEFL@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk and we’ll take it on board!

Will have to wait until the FFS site updates for this season before being able to filter EFL content, or to pick Ipswich in the profile pages.

      * Just checked and Ipswich has been added as an option - so just need the Fantasy EFL content filter option.

Diaby's transfer to Al-Ittihad reminded me of the major difference between Saudi TV and that of it's neighbour UAE. Apparently, Riyadh doesn't broadcast The Flintstones but Abu Dhabi do.

Neither much use in Fantasy EFL. But I'd prefer a combination of three penalty takers if possible.

B... but Bruno instead of Odegaard for me... I know your aim is to cover arsenal if you didn't go Saka but I'd take Bruno over Ode.

    Odegaard - Eze - Foden - Palmer - ( Winks )
Watkins - Isak - Havertz ( not sure who to bench first GW )

This is a squad based off popular picks from FPL YouTubers.

    Sanchez | Turner
    Alexander-Arnold | Gvardiol | Konsa | Burn | Mykolenko
    Salah (C) | Foden | Gordon | Eze | Nkunku
    Watkins | Isak (v)

I noted a few leaning into Haaland, Salah & TAA. This is where the 6m forward and 5.5m mid enter the CC arena.

Some notes I have regarding penalties:

-Saka & Palmer got a lot of penalties last season, is it sustainable?
-Man City have consistently received 7+ penalties/season so Haaland is nice to own, especially as captaincy is important
-Mac Allister should take penalties over Salah if I were Slot
-Saka, Toney, Mac Allister & Haaland are good penalty takers

    1. Lallana_

Also, Brighton seem to win a lot of penalties so even if Brighton have bad fixtures João Pedro might be worth a look if he seems fit to start the season for his price. No Europe for them.

Yes, I think Liverpool might have a rough season just like Klopp’s first season but they would finish in the top 5 imo.

Maresca loves tiki taka & worked with Pep. So expecting the same. Not a Leicester fan tho.

Any thoughts about this first draft?
    Henderson 4.0
    TAA Gusto Livramento Mykolenko Robinson
Salah Palmer Odegaard Gordon 4.5 (Bergvall?)
    Isak Havertz Wood
Luck of City players is worrying tho.

Team looks good to be honest, minor tweaks and you'll be set.

Livramento is one to watch to see if he is nailed on (if Trippier leaves then he's in everyone's team).

If you have 1 x 4.0 def you can then get Morgan Rogers as 8th attacker for just 5.0m.

I know planning transfers is generally not a great idea but anybody else considering no City in GW1 and then to immediately pivot to Foden for GW2?

Or better just to have him in from the start?

        Gordon.

        Current set up is:

        Salah Palmer Gordon Eze (Winks)

        2.0 ITB

        1. Zoostation
          • 11 Years
          1 year, 4 months ago

Other option is Eze but then have to find a way to shave 0.5.

If we think Robertson is 100% nailed close to the start I'd be happy to lose TAA for him.

You would think that. My concerns are too many players in forward positions. If I knew for certain, I would sacrifice Salah for him or any Pool forward. Diogo my favorite if he plays though.

Would you downgrade Rogers to a 4.5m midfielder to upgrade one of the 4.0 defenders or stick?

A - but can you find the 0.5 to upgrade Rogers to Cho? I'm personally still not convinced with Rogers but Isak is bordering on essential

    Which combo to start with?

    A. Munoz / Maatsen
    B. Robertson / 4.5M
    C. Gvardiol / 4.5M

    Thanks

All depends on the rest of your team, but out of those options in isolation i would go with C

      C. You can get Konsa at 4.5m and get the Aston Villa cover. Maatsen is still unproven quantity in the PL and same for Liverpool under Slot.

      This is my current draft.

      Sanchez
      Robertson / Livramneto / Maatsen
      Salah / Gordon / Foden / Rogers / Palmer
      Isak / Havertz

      Fabianski | Robinson | Muniz | Mosquera

Not sure about Robinson/Fulham defence because they have lost both Palhinha and Tosin so personally I'd be looking towards one of Myko, Anderson, Konsa for that spot

If I downgraded Maatsen, I could perhaps get Hudson-Odoi in for Rogers, what do you think?

Only issue with that is you're likely going to be benching one of Muniz or CHO each week

So would you downgrade Muniz to a 4.5M forward?

If it was my team I would downgrade Maatsen to Konsa (if you really want Villa defence) and downgrade Gordon to Eze (Eze on pens) and then you could use the 1 mil to either upgrade Foden to Saka or Havertz to Watkins. But it's a solid side regardless

    B) Havertz + 4.5 mid

      A. I don’t trust Havertz like most do here especially because Jesus & Martinelli will both fight to be in the xi. On the other hand, Bruno is nailed for most 90 minutes & a good differential.

All good points. If Havertz isn’t looking nailed it will make the decision much easier.

What do you guys think of this draft?

    Areola | Fab
    TAA | Konsa | Mykolenko | Andersen | Harwood
    Salah | Palmer | Gordon | Johnson | Winks
    Watkins | Isak | Havertz

Could downgrade TAA to Gvardiol/Saliba/Robertson to upgrade:
    1) GK
    2) another defender
    3) Jonhson
    4) bench

    Any suggestions?

      Strong.

And yeah, I'd downgrade TAA and pick one of those options.

I'm not convinced by Robertson this season. From what I've read re Slot he likes his right back to invert / move into midfield (TAA) and the left back (Robertson) stays and moves into a back 3.
I would downgrade Maatsen as he's unproven in the Premier League and they still have Moreno and Digne.
Hudson-Odoi in my opinion is an upgrade on Rogers too.

  29. Eze Really?

After looking at 5 different drafts for the upcoming season, I have come to some form of conclusion prior to having mor knowledge regarding starters.
The variations of the Salah, Haaland, Saka, Palmer, Watkins change things a lot.
My conclusion though, seems to be:
Munoz, Eze, Gordon and Gvardiol remain in all situations.
Are others arriving at the same outcomes?

No Munoz and Eze for me, I did consider Palace with Anderson.

But I decided there were other options see my bench post above.
Better cheaper options than Eze in particular - with nicer runs of fixtures.
Eze cannot really be afford if you go Haaland and Salah, while also going for a decent defence - with very attacking ones such as Porro and Gvardiol.

Munoz is a player I want to watch.
With Palace have a good end of season, Eze saves a .5 for calamities in GW2.
My only real alternative is Mbuemo IMO

Yes it's similar for me I think. Tried out a few different combinations of Haaland/Salah/Palmer/Son but won't decide on that til later. Saka & Foden I think I might wait on, although if Foden looks sharp in preseason maybe I just overlook the post-Euros factor for him (never really seen him look as jaded as Saka sometimes does).

I can fit my preferred defence - Pope / 4m / Gvardiol / Muñoz / Davis / Maatsen / Barco - around them, maybe trimming Pope & Maatsen - 4.5s if necessary. Isak & Gordon are pretty much unchanging too. Have Havertz in most drafts but don't mind Muniz instead for certain combos. Other mids are more flexible - looking at Maddison, Ødegaard, ESR if he moves, Hutchinson, maybe Rogers as 5th mid, and a few others

        Thanks for a good reply.
We are on similar routes. All but Pope you mention above creeps into my drafts. Maatsen a wait and see. Maddison waiting on improvement in form. Muniz in most teams dependent on setup.
Saka and Foden both taking the same viewpoint.
I think Spurs are a dark horse but Son must improve like Maddison and the backs a no go due to bonus drops conceding goals.

I think I have landed on the bench I like 3 (likely 4) playing players
    Sanchez - Konsa - Rodgers - Andreas

My logic is using the full bench will make it less likely that transfers are required, and I can play the fixtures more if I get the combinations correct. More chance of saving a transfer as well.

I did consider getting Maatsen/Cucerella and leave Bergvall as my 4.5m third sub. But that .5 saving with Konsa, allowed me to get Rodgers. All the indicators are he should start the season. So odds wise it gives me another option instead of just three,

I am not a Villa fan but I think Rogers too early to call; even with his pre-season performances. Just my opinion but recency bias kicking in I think.

Not just recency bias, that is the beauty of it. Rodgers was starting regularly at the end of last season 17th March until May 5th for Villa until he got injured. And missed last two games of season

        https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/morgan-rogers/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/503743/wettbewerb/GB1

Obviously Emery sees something in him. Rogers started gw29-36
Plus he is versatile can play right or left wing, and midfield.

Maybe as a starter in FPL it could be argued Rogers is a risk. But as a sub at 5.0m he is definitely worth paying the .5 for over the 4.5m midfield options.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Did Rogers get his place through other injuries at the time though?
As far as Everton are concerned I am staying away with the central defenders in doubt (Branthwaite decision, Injuries will cause Havoc and the uncertainty of who will end up owning them)
I am a pessimist though when dealing with Everton. (smile)

I am not sure about the injuries were the reason Rogers played regularly. The impression I got was he got a run of games and kept his place (I could be wrong) I am not a Villa fan.

I am looking at a Morgan Rogers thread on a Villa fan forum.

It is funny to read, they went from
"who?" "Why are we signing championship players - no ambition" - Feb 2024

            https://www.villatalk.com/topic/24949-morgan-rogers/

To raving about him, and wondering where his best position is by April 2024 "10 is his best position" - "I can't believe we got an u21 England international for around 8m"

            https://www.villatalk.com/topic/24949-morgan-rogers/page/91/

The more recent posts are saying that Morgan Rogers will be a senior England international soon.

If you go Rogers, you need an 8th attacker like CHO,
Andreas, or a 5.5 forward to go with him as cover and rotation.

I have Hudson-Odi as well. I think the best three value sub 6.5m midfielders (based on likelihood to start) are CHO, Andreas and maybe Rogers. Having those three allow me to have both Haaland and Salah, And have some sort of balanced squad, with sub/rotation options.
