Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

For all of you who are trying desperately to pick the chelsea midfielder who will play both games over the DGW, remember this. Any planned transfer is likely to cost you 4pts. Maybe not now, but at some point down the line, you are going to need an extra transfer. So if you go for lampard, and plan on switching him to Bale for GW2, it will essentially cost you a 4pt hit (at some point down the line). Still worth it, for the CHANCE he will play both games, and maybe score a penalty?

NB This is different if you plan to keep all your chelsea players and bench in GW3.

      There is the alternative 3.

If you play it right, you get two free transfers ahead of GW3 - which you might want to spend on a Chelsea player regardless, see it as their first three games have seen them go belly up in form, and talks of RDM sacking is already undertaken by the more Neanderthalian paper stacks of Fleet Street.

That is agreed, but I plan to keep either Torres or Lamps beyond Gw3, depending on form of course.

Well pointed out, the crucial link here is that 3 Chelsea players probably has cost you 4 points unless you'll bench them all... which is unlikely. Going with 2 already.

well effectively u get 2 free transfers before gw3 when chelsea dosnt play, so if u pick 3 from the start u only have 2 bench 1 without taking a 4point hit. thats what im doing anyway, Torres>Rooney GW2, Terry>Evra GW3 with Rami on the bench!

      YOLO 😉

but JT has better fixtures before GW3? what dont u understand, people dont have enough money 2 waste 14m on 2 defenders. if u really want 3 chelsea players for the DGW u can work around it. but i think what your saying is u could use the transfers for other players. your right but you'd have 2 be very lucky with your transfers 2 get better scores than 3 players playing twice?

For 15 players at the start of the season? I'd be over the moon if it didn't happen in the first GW!

Put it another way, what's the odds that at least one of your players in your first squad doesn't start?

Clyne is the only risk i'd say, by the sounds of it you've had some very bad luck in the past! but i wouldnt be willing to waste a transfer for a rotation player that early when i could benefit from transfers to gain points elsewhere?

So that's the first test, the second test is what's the odds that at least one of the players in your first squad is a dud you want to transfer?

It's just important to remember that DGW players aren't guaranteed points - heck, for this Chelsea team, we're not even sure whether most will play both games - and every DGW player you select a possible dud player you can't transfer out for a good player.

i think the point is tht the DGW team is CHELSEA! when u transfer out a chelsea player the person u swap them with will be a top bracket player in their position and i think wigan and reading as opening fixtures is a must have IMO!

    Fed Friedel
    Ivan Zabaleta Cuellar Clyne McCartney

    Torres Rooney/Kun Tevez

I'm not going near Friedel with both holding mids out injured.

      Defence is good.

Midfield is not but that's the price of your strikeforce. Keep in mind that Kagawa played well in a midfield two against Barcelona, so he could very well drop back to give the strikers their gametime now and then.

I'd probably go for Bent over Aguero since you've got Tevez, and keep enough for the boring Rooney swap if you're not happy with someone.

    To Najoman

Its difficult to give a predicted starting 11 for the weekend, as we have so many doubts. But if I had to stick my neck out, it would be this

    --------------------------Krul--------------------------
    Simpson--Williamson--Collochini--Santon
    --------------------Tiote---Jonas--------------------
    -----------------------Cabeye------------------------
    ------Obertan------Cisse/Ba-------Marveaux

    1) Saylor might play instead of Williamson (or he might be eased in over a couple of weeks)
    2) If Tiote is injured, Perch will play
    3) If cabeye is injured, Vuckic or Amalfitano will play
    4) I would expect both strikers to be fit, but as they have just finished ramadan, one will start, with the other coming on in the second half

Saylor could start over williamson. If he doesn't, he will be first choice within a couple of games. He might be eased back into it, but is 100% nailed on as collochinis partner when fit (IF we don't sign another centre back)

Raylor is a million miles away from being first choice pick, but may scrape into the team for the first week, if all of the injury doubts prove to be real

After 7 years of hurt, we've spent the summer re-building, and at 3pm this Saturday we take on Sunderland at home with a renewed sense of hope. What makes this day extra special is it’s the start of the fantasy football season, and with a double game-week in play, expectations are sky-high. In other news, my little sister is expecting her first child on Saturday, a boy, whom I secretly hopes she calls Thierry."

With Balotelli and Dzeko around, I just don't think that Tevez is secured for a starting place. One has to be a first team player before he can get into my team. I have been sticking to this principle in my past seasons.
Even the extra 2.5m is very useful, but Aguerro will be in my team.

True, still Mata missed a fair amount of preseason with the Olympic team and there's what I see as the bigger problem, Torres has 1 gametime rival whereas Mata has perhaps 5? I don't reckon Spain will exert Torres too much.

Unless N'Zogbia keeps his terrible form from last season, I have to agree.

Although factually speaking it's Michu, as he has never scored an FPL point in his life. I.e. unproven.

        Depends on your perspective.

I like the attacking-heavy allocation of money. I think one should plan for 5 heavy hitters up front (w/ anyone over 8.0m a "heavy hitter"), so I think you're on point there. However, you do need viable subs -- cheap, but viable. Also, I think Stoke have one of the worst openning runs -- I'd transfer Shawcross to someone like Rangel or Hangeland or anyone but stoke (for now).

I would like 2 c your subs because the FPL is not just about the basic 11, its a rotation game aswel.

Vorm - i dont like him, at 5.5m he is far too expensive for a GK outside the top 6 plus i dont think swansea will reach anywhere near 14 Cleanies this season
      Clichy good
      Lescott - Ivanavic
Shawcross - has poor fixtures, straight swap for Hangelaand
Mata- risky cause of fatigue but could pay off if its a gamble your willing to take
      Bale - must have
Valencia - poor because he could end up starting the season as right back or maybe on the bench
      id swap him for Nasri/Yaya
Guthrie - cool as midfield cover
Aguero - i like what u plan 2 do with rooney, i think thats a pretty savvy move
      Tevez - good
      Graham - good

      your welcome 😉

        few questions tho

if not vorm then who? krul? hes got a tough fixture gw1 against tottenham

        i chose cole over clichyy

lescott- bro i think city are gonna have shit load of cs this season and apart from kompany only other defender that is nailed on is lescott

shawcross- alright will do bud thanks

mata - nah man i think rdm means business , playing marin or malouda gw1 and getting a draw/ loss would be really bad , mata dint play much in the olympics imo hell start one of the two atleast

valencia - u got a point there , but with no.7 role i think he might play more offensive than ever, i think fergie may play jones as rb even

nasri/yaya already got 3 city players bud unless u think cole to clichy is a must but in that case ill lose the 05 im saving for rooney

my subs are : cuellar, stam , whitehead and cerny

Pretty set with my team - main issue is which mids to complete the puzzle?

    a) Lamps & Pienaar
    b) Mata & Taarabt

    Schwarzer, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Demel, Clyne
    Bale, VDV, XXX, XXX, Guthrie
    Torres(c), Tevez, Graham

    Bank 2.0m (Torres -> Rooney)

If I go a) then I'd probably ditch Lamps in GW3, whereas if b) I'd probably just bench Mata and perhaps ditch Taarabt/Ivanovic in GW3.

Yeah, planning on saving the wildcard for as long as possible (preferably until the DGWs come around). I think I'd need to see some sign of improvement from Zogs before bringing him in, although he does have great fixtures and an attack-minded manager behind him...

Yes, but I think right now it's Begovic's place to lose. I only plan on playing him in 3 of the first 12 GWs anyway (all at home, 2 of which are very good), so worst case, if he does get benched then Schwarzer comes in.

Is VDV confirmed to start ahead of Siggy? Whats the expected Spurs frontline?

There will be little such confirmation.

Although with the current midfield injuries, it's quite certain Siggy will play - the question is in which position. This depends most on whether VDV's hamstrings survives him getting out of bed, into his car, and down to the Lane, or not.

in that case, Bale is the safest option though not a good differential at all

Kind of running out of time to get in a new striker? Might be stuck with Defoe & Kane.... hmmmm

He's the most explosive mid in the league when healthy and is far too lazy to drop deep. AVB has talked him up too recently. Surely he'll start?

Yeah, I'm still undecided on the Mata & Taarabt vs Lamps & Pienaar route. Taarabt being on pens with 2 good fixtures up first, and Mata probably more guaranteed game time and an advanced role is swaying me that way.

Maybe Graham for the bench in GW1?

Are you going with Mata or Lampard? Thinking Demel, Guthrie & Mata -> Gunter, Noble & Mata. Would feel more comfortable benching Graham for a penalty taker at home to a Lambert side...

Taarabt has played the Pirlo role when QPR use two up top for what it's worth, I do like him but that fact's bugging me atm.

his legend is more "amusing" than his reality was -- he was always on someone's case about something, usually attacking people for what he considered "unworthy" posts/points (with himself presiding as judge, jury and executioner), and he was at his worst on a heated game day.

    ------------------Jass-------------- (Begovic)
--Cuellar -- Cole -- Hangeland (Fabio, Gunter)
Bale - Michu - Pienaar - Kagawa (Noble)
    --Torres--Tevez--Graham

5,5M in bank, what should I do?
Could try to save 0,5 more and do a Graham - Rooney switch.
Or do Torres-Rooney switch for 2M in gameweek 2. What to do with the other 3,5 then? Could upgrade Michu or Pienaar

    What do you guys think?

hi china mag, you mentioned that Saylor will be eased into 1st team this season.
so in that case, in around which GW would you reckon he would be a sure starter?

looking at fixture, I can afford to wait till GW5, by than he should be a nailed on CB, right?

Absolutely. He is fit, and has played a part in the last few friendlies. He could even start this weekend, but should definitely be in by GW5.

Morning all! Wow we must be getting close to the season start, this time of day there are usually 6 posts an hours.

Usual apology before posting a RMT but have left this team as it is for a week and still happy with it. Appriciate any thoughts-

    Jaask Ruddy
    Cole Lescott Cellular Hangeland Clyne
    Bale Michu Lampard Guthrie Noble
    Aguero Graham Torres
    +2m

-Ruddy rotates of with Jaask for fist few weeks, want Begovic but will wait to ensure hes number 1
    - Torres to Rooney. Of course!
    - Cole to Newcastle def for gw3
    - may take a hit that week and Lampard to Kagawa depending on form
    - Really want Aguero over Tevez
-RVP to Man u would break all my plans!

    Comments welcome

Michu and Graham? hmm, I have been thinking about it but too scared to double up on Swans attack. Do you think its the way to go?

Team looks solid otherwise but not sure about Guthrie AND Noble

I'm tempted by Michu and Graham as well, but ultimately I think its too much. I wanted Michu, Graham & Piennar, but backed out and went Michu and Jelavic (Piennar to a bench 4.5 instead of rotating mids... Puncheon at the moment)

Yeah the double swansea is a punt but recon going for it!

If i do Cole to newc defender and lamp to Kagawa would be able to upgrade Guthrie.

        Thanks for comment
