Not true at all. Following that logic might lead you to spend say £75-80m in total. Yes you lose to most £100m squad but at least you got the most points per £m!

      1. There were some great articles about VORP on here back in the day.

Measuring a player's value to a team by comparing their performance to a replacement-level player

11 players at 4.5m scoring 100p over a season is better value than 11 players at 6.5 scoring 140p.
      So, no.

i dont understand why that even matters, he kicked the ball away, whether rolling or not, which is not allowed (althought most of the time referee's turn a blind eye to it) and deserves a yellow card by the letter of the law

            • 14 Years

The ball was never stopped so Rice was not interfering with a free kick

              • 8 Years

no my point is he kicked the ball away - nothing to do with the free kick - its the same as when Van Persie got that Red card against barcelona for kicking the ball away.

Im arguing the action of kicking the ball away irrespective of the free kick

He was though. Whether the ball was moving or not, Rice still kicked the ball away - which is a bookable offence. No question.

If you’re going by the letter of the law then Veltman should have seen red no for kicking Rice like that

                      He did receive a booking

                  2. He was trying to kick the ball but Rice's leg was there as part of the motion in him kicking the ball away. He wasn't recklessly endangering an opponent or kicking him out of spite (violent conduct).

"While there are some, not unreasonable, concerns that the mass adoption of predictive data models might lead to excessive homogenisation or templatisation across FPL teams, it is also possible that such models might actually help promote the opposite. It could help move us beyond the current convention of mass-selecting the same enablers in order to fund the mass-selection of the same premiums." Hmmm possibly yes however if everyone follows the models, they will generally have the same squads. Perhaps successful application of value based decisions also need to consider effective ownership?

I can’t decide is this is really interesting article or a very poorly written article.

As a consultant in financials maths. I see a lot of drafting like this. Using long and winding sentences either because:

    1. The point you are trying to make is actually quite weak and you are trying to make it look smart. Or
    2. Because the concepts are inherently complex and the author has undrrstandably struggled to convey it succinctly

Two points make me lean towards the former:

    1. The point missing from the Haaland Maupay example is that you have £100m to spend. There’s no point only spending £90m to achieve a better points per £m. Yes you can say spend the money elsewhere, but that rebuttal has to end somewhere, eventually it’s worth spending the money. The fact this isn’t mentioned is revealing.

    2. The last paragraph essentially reads “people fear computers will make the game template … but it might not”. Without any justification as the article gives no example as to how these computers work.

For now, I conclude unfortunately a rather weak article, that uses long words to look clever.

nice article. imo a big point in value is what point total you put on 1 extra mil, and basically working from there. for me its about 27.5 extra points come the end of the season, not that anyone cares

so for a trade off between perma cap Palmer vs perma cap Haaland, Haaland would have to outscore by 123, which is 3.2 per gw. so 1.6 ppg more come then end of the season. makes you think Haaland might not be essential, depends completely on the 6mil and under bracket and if they can perform. but thats just 1 key example

Yep, gone without him or Salah

Can rotate between de bruyne, jota, palmer, saka, isak to optimise captaincy and make Haaland have to score even higher.

Is it crazy to go without ARS & BRE players on wc4?

I don’t think anybody is using the WC in GW4, that makes zero sense.

not with ode's injury no. but would likely still have raya and he's a very much long term keep

also depends that when gw6 comes around you aren't thinking i'll bring them in then etc if thats the case get wissa and bench for rogers at the very least

        Thanks maybe wissa now then

    3. Depends if you want to get your ducks in a row early - I would suggest a early WC promotes this longer term thinking.

Even though Palmer has a higher ownership, I would say that ownership level does not exist at the highest ranks, and is based on average players so it is misleading. More people own TAA in the higher ranks I suspect. So I would go for Palmer.

Palmer is such a great player. All this time off to train, I would be worried as a Bournemouth fan.

IMO, Palmer is one of the best players in the league, and a generational talent. I think we have only had glimpses of what he can achieve.

That haul in GW2 is a big warning sign of what he is capable of. City are mad for letting him go.

The writing is on the wall in big red letters.

I agree with everything youve just said but its chelsea - we saw how a great player can fail in a bad system with bruno, but yes Palmer is a ridiculously good player

The way Chelsea are at the moment, they are like a middle table team. Palmer will continue to thrive in such a team because he is the main man. When he ends up back at City, he wont be that player any more.

It might not be the best comparison, but I would compare his situation at the moment to Grealish at Villa. And potentially what ESR will be for Fulham.

He didn't cost 10.5m last year. How many goals were penalties? Only 2 penalties given in 3 gws

so lets say we took away his penalties for arguments sake - 13 goals and 13 assists does not justify 10.5mil?

Just reread the article twice. I don’t me to be down on the author, sure he’s a great guy but on reflection my view is only strengthened, this article says nothing at all.

It poses some interesting questions upfront, but then doesn’t actually provide an answer.

I was taught in school a good essay / article is

    1. Summarises your answer
    2. Justify your answer
    3. Summarise your answer.

would be better if it used teams as examples. eg 1 premium team vs 3 premium team and then explaining the caveats for each in terms of value

I agree, but I’m not sure the author actually quite knows what his key point truly is, so would’ve been hard to use the right examples.

    Would you rather have:

    a) robbo + two 4.5m bench defenders
    or
    b) trent + two 4.0m bench defenders

I would use one of the benched defenders very few times, but one of my three main defenders is also rico lewis

B with Greaves, they have some nice fixs & if you had to play him in 1 or 2 of them, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, just as likely to keep a CS as Dunk or Konsa, the cheap defenders are not as great as we all thought they might be.

I saw and heard many articles about what and wasn't 'value' (good value) in sports betting too regarding odds and basically nobody could give a definition, a bit like this article. What is good value to one person is terrible value to someone else, its very subjective.

I wouldn’t include Robbo in this list as having all three locks out any other Liverpool options. So if I was on WC I’d have to weigh that up (and might still go for him) whereas the other 4 are straight in there without any thought at all.

I think those 4 are the list tbh, not sure theirs is a 5th I’d put in the same inarguable category.

    A) Robinson, TAA, Welbeck (already have Joao Pedro and would bench Rogers to play both vs IPS)

    B) Dunk, Robertson, Wissa (will bench Wissa GW4 and play Rogers)

    Cheers.
