With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Have to wait for the everton game to see how RVP and rooney get on, before the GW2 transfer, still going to stick with the roonman, RVP will be the new kid on the block. we all know his potential and yes he was good at arsenal but with no time to understand his new team mates will he perform? could be a flop to begin with although being a huge united fan i hope he is not! i reckon hell try too hard and maybe take all chances for himself. Could be initially damaging for the team. but thats my opinion!!

Just to add as you might know im new to the page! been all over this site the last few weeks due to my new fantasy season starting in work, its unfortunatly with the daily star and i have sucked the last few seasons so was looking for advice, just got to say some of the knowledge on here is amazing, could name a few individuals i follow already but wont make you big headed!

Also didnt realise so many sexy women played the fantasy football league!

Let's look at how United might try to use RVP:

    Scenario 1
4-4-2 with Rooney AND RVP the strikers.

The most likely one IMO. Carrick and Kagawa play CM. It's assumed Rooney will play deeper as more of a supporting striker, but given RVP's pedigree in link up play and record of assists, I don't see that as guaranteed. Hernandez and Welbeck to take some gametime from either.

    Scenario 2
4-2-3-1 with RVP lone striker and Rooney in the hole

Possible, not massively different from 4-4-2 but Kagawa would suffer if played in CM because he'd be relatively deeper and Rooney would be doing the playmaking. May change how much gametime Hernandez and Welbeck get as neither are earmarked as playmakers.

    Scenario 3
4-2-3-1 with Rooney OR RVP as lone striker

Very unlikely. It would be pointless to have to bench one every week. The only advantages are that Kagawa gets to play in the hole.

    Scenario 4
4-3-3 with Rooney center forward, RVP left forward and someone (maybe Nani) right forward

Not looking likely since it's likely RVP was bought for his goals. Still, he is left-sided and can contribute to attacking moves. Would be a seriously attacking formation. Kagawa could play furthest forward of the midfield three.

      I'm thinking 4-2-3-1 personally

      DDG
      Rafael Rio Vidic Evra
Carrick Cleverely (Replace with Giggs, Scholes, Anderson, Fletcher as appropriate)
Valencia Rooney Nani (Replace with Kagawa, Young etc)
      RVP (Hernandez, Wellbeck)

None of this really matters Dimitar Berbatov to be the main man 😉

Giroud will slot it for RVP and he gets goals AND assists through knockdowns. Podi will be on penalties though and corner kicks too with cazorla. arsenal have got more goal threat than last season so I'd get Podi and maybe gervinho.

good luck to RVP, thanks for everything and break a leg!

Evening all, thought i would start with a WSISMLOM question.

    3.0mil to spend!

    DDG Federici
    Lescott, Ivanovic, Hangeland, Cuellar, Tierney
    VDV, Nani, Sinclair, Maloney, Noble
    Tevez, Graham, Torres

    A few options:
    tevez --> aguero
    upgrade maloney
    upgrade tierney
    or another option?

ok guys as i am sure is the case with a lot of you, you have made changes to your once 'perfect team', anyway, here is mine so help would be nice:

    Jussi Federici
    Hangeland Saylor Zab Cuellar Clyne
    Bale Valencia Gervinho Michu Pienaar
    Torres Tevez Bent

a few things which concern me are

    1) gervinho
    2) too much money will be benched each week

Ok, ok, the confusion around here makes it the worst time to do this, but I need some sort of guidance amidst the chaos. Playing around with my team (which was previously 99% sorted) - how about this?

    DDG/Begovic
    A.Cole/Zabaleta/Hangeland/Cuellar/Fabio
    Bale/Cazorla/Pienaar/Michu/Noble
    Torres/Tevez/Graham

    1.5m in the bank, then:
    GW2 - A.Cole - Coloccini

Leaving 3m in the bank if I decide I need to go Torres-RVP.

Because he is unproven in the premiership? Because he is new to his team and team-mates? Because a significant amount of his goals in ligue 1 were from penalties & DFKs which Fat Frank will have first dibs on? He could end up a world beater, but why not watch him for a week or two first before committing? He could just as easily be siting in GW5 with 0 goals & assists to his name & a 0.3m price drop.

Not sure what I think of RVP to Man Utd. Clearly a fantastic player (albeit an injury plagued Arsenal career, but last season proved the potential he has always threatened).

More interested to see how he fits in at United. Doesn't seem to fit any particular plan, as their transfers have always done in recent years. Still feel they are lacking in the deeper CM position (a hole a player such as Schweinsteiger or Witsel would fill), and a right back (Rafael not good enough). Seems to be a plethora of top quality forwards now, all seemingly competing for one position. Can't see a 4-4-2 with RVP and Rooney, and Kagawa no where near his best when pushed out to the flank, and can't see either RVP or Rooney playing wide.

Very interested for GW1 and how, in particular RVP, Rooney and Kagawa, are included. Feel for Hernandez, lost out to Welbeck last year, and can't see him getting a genuine run in the team. Or at least until RVP gets injured.
