With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      You have to change out Mertesacker, he was great a world cup ago but you can do much better. Which Nelsen?

      Mertesacker, Ferdinand, Neville and Nelsen are quite poor picks, imo. The rest looks good in fairness. Do not bench Pog... If you're not going to play him in a DGW then when will you play him

        Okay I will look into a replacement for Pog possibly. My bench is not going to be used it is just full of cheap players. I just wanted one or two United and Arsenal defenders but might take one of them out for coloccini (newcastle)

          Koscielny for Arsenal is a good pick if you want an Arsenal defender... there are question marks over his fitness but he is great value, as is Coloccini or Taylor S, imo. You might as well have a bench of cheapos that will play though, you will have to bench bigger players some weeks so those cheap players will have to play, have a look at the likes of Guthrie-bit of a bargain at 4.5, over Neville who will do pretty much shite all this season in fantasy terms. Hope this helps!

      it's different because it has a strong defence. most don't. but the problem i foresee with such a strong backline is that it will likely encourage u to play 4 at the back more often than i'd consider advisable. that means benching 2 attackers. one or both of which- on any given week- cud score a goal or two.ergo buhbye sweet pointage. now i'm all for having strong, expensive defenders but i've played this game long enough now to limit my backline to 3 almost always. check out the respective number of either position to have reached any given point threshold last season and mayhaps thou shalt concur. oh and mertesacker is a sack of merde

          re. wot you said above concerning cheap bench fillers, i'd advise against that.i consider all of my players on an even footing. each a good option in his own right. one of the advantages is, say, one of yer first teamers gets injured, u already have a decent replacement in yer squad as backup. if u have some piece of trash then your transfer options are more limited. tis a squad game. utilize your 15. by all means have a dirt cheap defensive sub- it frees up dosh, and as u play 3 at the back u have little to lose- but with attackers i think you will likely regret the self-limitization that crap reserves wud engender. fewer transfers means fewer hits and therefore fewer points squandered. you will lose a few points to the bench but not very many in the scheme of things

    Currently have a GK rotation of Schwarzer/Mignolet. Thinking of dropping Mignolet for a 4.5 GK rotation with Schwarzer to free up an additional 0.5

    Begovic or Green? Or keep Mignolet/Schwarzer rotation?

        Yes, must say I'm leaning towards Green. Although, I would only consider not playing Schwarzer in Round 2 (ManU away) and 6 (Man City home) in the first 10 weeks

        Green (r2 & 6) - Norwich (away) & West Ham (home)
        Begovic (r2 & 6) - Arsenal (home) & Swansea (home) - question marks over Sorenson rotation
        Mignolet (r2 & 6) - Reading (home) & Wigan (home) - costs an extra 0.5

      Only downgrade if you are desperate for that extra 0.5m. The sun/ful rotation is great. If you have to downgrade, schwarzer for begovic!

          The extra 0.5 basically comes down to where to spend it? I can either get a 4.5 GK to rotate with one of Schwarzer or Mignolet... or move N'Zogbia on for a 6.0 midfielder and keep the Schwarzer/Mignolet rotation

          They rotate very well based on fixture difficulty (not home/away). And Sunderland have better CS prospects than Fulham. Should be very tight under MON. And they are crap up front so will have to concentrate on defence

      Yes, Begovic, but the main thing is not to waste anything on a second goalie. Wait for a 4.0 guy to take over for an injured goalie, then switch out your 4.5 goalie if you have that luxury of a spare move.

    Roo Petric Torres.

    0 In the bank. But now with this shit I think i'll make these changes:

    Bye Rooney, Hi Adeba
    Bye Siggurdson, Hi bale

    2 in the bank.

    But if RVP is nailed on:

          I was only being a d*ck. For you...Clichy won't start, it will be Kolorov on the left (not definite but it's the general consensus) Van Persie will probably make a cameo appearance from the bench if he does feature at all, you'd probably get better value for your money than Walters

          He could well beat you GW1- the fact that he has Aguero and Tevez means he could score big points but his midfield is quite poor and Silva isn't likely to start for City

    My team is in tatters. Think I'm gonna have to start with no MUN strikers and keep enough in the bank to assess which is the best option from RVP/Rooney after GW1.

    My team as of yesterday is below, so I need to find another 1.0m from somewhere in case RVP is the clear way to go in GW2. Best option?

    a) Hangelaand -> a 4.0m defender
    b) De Gea -> Migs
    c) Zabs -> S Taylor
    d) Taarabt -> Maloney
    e) Pienaar -> Dyer
    f) 2 of Bale/Mata/Noble -> VDV/Lampard/Guthrie

    De Gea, Federici
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Hangelaand, Cuellar, Demel

      I don't agree with keeping that money in the bank. It is only a good idea if you are planning a switch after one week. You will want more than one game to assess the man united striker situation. In that time that extra money should have been earning you more points, certainly more than enough to pay for the 4 pt hit (maximum) it will take to make the change

        Yeah, I'd make the switch before any price rises in GW2. Agree with what you're saying, but I think MUN attacking coverage is essential for GW2-4 incl, so I may have to take a gamble on one of them if all is not clear after the eve game!!

        But if RVP is clearly playing more advanced than Rooney, and, dare I say it, on pens and free-kicks, then I wouldn't be able to get him in GW2 without a hit with the above team.

          Jins, we have similar thoughts ( see near top of page)

          Plan was
          1 Torres to Rooney
          2 Cole to Collocini

          Will prob still do this as it frees up cash enough for a rooney to RVP switch if needed. Also am happy to bench Lamp/ Mata for one week

        I'm thinking the same - also Everton's first 3 fixtures aren't great, so Taraabt -> Pienaar from GW3/4 onwards could work a treat.

        Only issue is double Swans. Worth doing Graham -> Petric as well?

      rvp and rooney will nick goals from each other, so not such a good choice. although u can argue the same with Kun and Tevez.
      we shall see how the formation on united is before doing further decision.
      that said, i think valencia is now very tempting. His crosses will bound to be connected to one of the strikers.

    Is anyone else thinking of trying to avoid the rotation minefield and going for three big hitting defenders?

      Nah, there's too much value in the likes of Cuellar, Hangelaand, Saylor etc imo. I'm thinking of downgrading from 2 BH defenders to just 1!

        I am thinking of going for 3 big hitting defenders, then rotating cuellar/hughes so play 4 at the back most games. I know that convention is for 3 at the back, and know the arguments for it, but I can see all big hitting forward options other than bale, carzola (and dempsey if he stays) only playing 75% of games.

      Not for the time being. But I think over time, majority of sides will consist of 2 out of Kompany (simply because he's assured in City's defence), Vidic and Baines

      A 4.5 defender that scores goals consistently... good luck.... There are only a few guys (at any price point) that have the potential to score 5 in a season....

    Afternoon fellow dead zoners!

    What do you make of this lot?

    Friedel / Green
    Cole / Hangeland / Clark / Fox / McCartney
    Lampard / VDV / Ramires / Maloney / Noble
    Graham / Rooney / Aguero

    1.0 in the bank for possible Rooney to RVP move.

    Are there any decent mids for 5.5 i could get instead of Maloney (while downgrading Fox to Clyne)?

    How's this team looking?

    Federici (de Gea)

    Zabaleta - Hangeland - Koscielny - McCartney (Williams)

    Noble - Lampard - Valencia (McClean - N'Zogbia)

    Graham - Tevez - Torres (c)

    3.0 in the bank

      Looking good, Koscielny may actually have a legit injury though, France assessed him. Despite the DGW, I think Bale is much better value than Lampard and worth the extra 0.5, IMO. I take it the 3.0 is saved for RVP though 😉

    Tevez (VC) - Bent - Graham

    What are peoples thoughts on a forward 3 of

    Tevez, Graham, Pogs- Swansea early fixtures almost make his value increase by 2.0 points

    Then have a midfield of

    Carzolo
    Mata
    Bale
    Nani/Nasri
