Alan Pardew is sweating over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Tottenham’s visit to the Sports Direct Arena on Saturday evening. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign wide man Oussama Assaidi from SC Heerenveen, Norwich snap up former City left-back Javier Garrido on loan, while Swansea sign Kyle Bartley from Arsenal…

Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa both remain “still doubtful” for Newcastle’s home clash with Spurs on Saturday evening, according to Alan Pardew. The French duo have barely featured in pre-season due to their Euro 2012 commitments and, while Ben Arfa’s omission is likely to hand Sylvain Marveaux a starting role on the right flank, the possible absence of Cabaye could be offset by the news that the Magpies have signed Vurnon Anita from Ajax on a five-year deal. The 23-year old can also play in defence but Pardew admitted yesterday that he anticipates his new signing to mainly feature in midfield in the season ahead. The Newcastle boss also revealed Papiss Cisse has recovered from a recent hamstring problem and will be available for selection against Andre Villas-Boas’ side – Pardew failed to mention Demba Ba, who has been nursing a shin problem, though it’s worth remembering the Senegalese striker slumped in form this time last year after fasting during Ramadan.

Liverpool have agreed terms with SC Heerenveen for the transfer of winger Oussama Assaidi. The deal is subject to a medical but, upon completion, is likely to raise concerns over the club’s bid to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham. The Reds have been linked with the US international all season but with Assaidi’s preferred position as an inverted winger on the left, it may well be that Brendan Rodgers has given up on the chase to snap up Dempsey, bearing in mind that Luis Suarez is likely to be fielded on the flanks in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3 formation. The transfer also raises question marks over the game time of Stewart Downing – the former Villa man has been stationed on the right in recent matches and, at 6.5 in FPL, had looked an intriguing prospect, but he could well be restricted to a sub role is Assaidi completes his move.

Norwich yesterday completed the signing of Javier Garrido from Lazio on a season-long loan. The former Man City left-back’s return to the Premier League immediately raises major question marks over the game time of Marc Tierney for the season ahead as Chris Hughton continues to bolster his backline. Having shipped 66 goals and returned three clean sheets under Paul Lambert in 2011/12, the Canaries defence was given a wide berth by Fantasy managers but pre-season results have been encouraging, with four clean sheets in the last six friendlies and Tierney – priced at 4.0 in FPL – looked an intriguing option. Dependant on Garrido’s price, it could well that one of Ryan Bennett or Leon Barnett may afford us a cut-price route into Hughton’s backline for the season ahead.

Swansea have signed Kyle Bartley from Arsenal on a three-year deal. The deal is something of a surprise from a Fantasy perspective – with Chico already arriving from Genoa, we’d anticipated the Spaniard forging a partnership with Ashley Williams at the heart of the Welsh club’s defence but Michael Laudrup looks to have other ideas up his sleeve. With a strong starting schedule, the Swans backline seem primed for investment but with doubts surrounding the central areas, Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor could well be a safer bet until we discover the new manager’s intentions. Bartley has yet to be added to the Fantasy games and, while all their main defenders are priced at 5.0 in FPL, Rangel, at 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, looks like the most secure route into Laudrup’s backline right now. Reports have also suggested the Dane is ready to bring Pablo Hernandez to the club, raising question marks over Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer with just one day before tomorrow’s big kick-off – hardly ideal as we look to whittle our squads into shape.

I can't decide between Lampard or Mata. Can anyone drop some wisdom on why you would have one over the other?

With Lampard still on pens yeah?

Mata rarely plays 90 minutes. I guess it doesn't matter much if he can do the damage in an hour.

Same. Lamps playing on Wed is a worry - but he's not played over the summer. Mata didn't play on Wednesday and barely played over the Summer but was obviously still training so hasn't really had any time off.
Mata plays further up and has set pieces except pens. Also, I'd rather have Mata long-term. So if money is no object I'd maybe lean towards Mata.
I'd wait for a Chelsea fan's opinion though.

Mata can create more chances and set up more goals
His creativity is the main reason why chelsea could succeed...

lampard mata hazard - all good options.
thats why i decided to go with ramirez - maybe slightly less points, but i will not kill myself for investing so much on the wrong horse - and can upgrade elsewhere.

I'm going with Lampard. Lamps takes penalties, get's forward still, is 0.5m cheaper and he used to be valued at 12m remember...
Mata is probably a safer option but I just think it's a coin toss so I'd rather go for the cheaper option. Lamps will get plenty of gametime this season imo and I think he'll be great value.

Having real problems replacing Sinclair and Nolan now. I’ve got a nice shortlist only the fixtures aren’t very good for rotation…

Pick 2 from: Snodgrass, McClean, Hoilett, Pienaar, Nzogbia

    Federici (Ge Gea)
    Lescott Hangeland Tomkins (Rangel Clyne)
    Mata Bale Guthrie ——- ——-
    Graham Tevez Torres

    I’m swaying towards Snodgrass/Pienaar but keep changing…

Cheers Sid, McClean is definitely interesting me 3rd most. There's something about Snodgrass though, he should be on most set pieces i's imagine.

I agree with the snodgrass pick. he should play the majority of games and has been deployed behind the front man in a couple pre-season games. He isn't a prolific scorer but he's got a good touch in front of goal at leeds and good on set pieces too. Not huge upside but a decent pick for the season i think.

How far do you think I'll get trying to force these nicknames into common usage:

    JVP = Judas Van Persie
    Cazza = Santi Cazorla

    A) Nowhere, they will be ignored
    B) Slight smirk from the easily amused but no adoption
    C) A handful of uses but they'll die out by the end of the day
    D) Everyone will be using them forever and ever and ever

I personally don't think their fixtures are that bad! Sunderland seem short of confidence and injury struck. Stoke are without Huth. Liverpool are adapting to a high line and have been shipping chances and goals all preseason. Southamptons weakness is in defense. Granted you might not get much out of City but Luiz at the Emirates is ripe for a rollicking too imo.

So Giroud might be a great differential. Its just possible Wenger might prefer Gerv or Podolski in the striker role and ease Giroud in in the first few games.

Out in spain so have been completely out of the loop the last few days; did manage to hear about RVP to united, so my dilemma is should I downgrade Aguero to Tevez to allow enough money to do Torres to RVP now instead of Torres to Rooney as I had planned? What are others doing in this situation?

Looking at last seasons points, I really think there is not point spending the cash in defense. However I still have an itching feeling to have both a Man U & Citeh defender. Is this approach worth pursuing?

    de Gea, Federici
Zabaleta, Hangeland, Cuellar, Ryan Bennett, Demel
    N'Zogbia, Bale, Pienaar, Michu, Guthrie
    Aguero, Tevez, Rooney

    Covers all options up front.

Why are we picking Demel? Is he some sort of attacking threat?

If RVP scores more in his 20 minute cameo at Goodison that Torres scores in 180 minutes the angst is going to be volcanic.......

Is Cazorla safe and fit to start in GW1? Want to have Arsenal attack coverage with Torres, Graham and Tevez, it's hard to choose Podo...

Arsene is evaluating fitness of Cazza (and Walcott) so I'd play safe if I were you. But with JVP gone, Podolski looks much more assured of goalscoring chances. Well worth a punt
