We’ve got another new addition to our Members Area today, namely the defensive contributions ‘per 90’ stat.

By this point, you’ll no doubt know who the leading names would have been for defensive contributions in 2024/25 – the likes of Murillo (£5.5m), James Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Moises Caicedo (£5.5m).

But what about, for example, a player who has the potential to excel in defensive contributions but experienced a mid-season injury? Such a player won’t feature in any end-of-year rankings.

This is precisely why we have introduced the defensive contributions ‘per 90’ stat, as it allows us to effectively compare a group of players who have played a contrasting number of minutes.

WHERE TO FIND DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS ‘PER 90’ IN OUR MEMBERS AREA

In the Player Stats section of our Members Area, click on whichever position you’d like.

In the ‘Defending’ tab of each of these is a column marked ‘Tot’ under defensive contributions.

These are the total number of defensive contributions in 2024/25.

By ticking the ‘per 90’ checkbox next to the ‘Filter’ button, subscribers can see the usual range of player data shown ‘per 90’.

Using Defenders as an example, you can see defensive contributions ‘per 90’ highlighted in red below:

*Minimum 750 minutes played

And that’s not all.

We’ve also added a defensive contribution points ‘per 90’ stat, which you can find in the ‘Fantasy’ tab.

As with the other stats in our Members Area, they can be filtered by home/away matches, Gameweek range and more.

You can even use the ‘Versus’ feature to see which fixtures these players racked up the most defensive contribution points against.

Once again, our thanks go to TopMarx and Plan FPL (Reece) for setting up this feature.

That's nice for some. Still baffled that FPL introduced a new scoring system but won't provide the stat info to enable punters to follow it.

We need CBIT/CBIRT in the player info, not all this "influence, threat, creativity" vagueness.

It's the equivalent of not providing us with the number o saves a goalkeeper makes in a match.

Scout won't thank me for saying this but its freely available direct from Opta - https://theanalyst.com/competition/premier-league/stats. Choose the defending dropdown for players and you have tackles, interceptions, possession won (which is recoveries), blocks and clearances all in one line. There isn't one which adds them all together like Scout have done so you might need a calculator or spreadsheet if you're not so good with numbers. Scout do have the excellent Statsbomb data if you're that way inclined which isn't freely available but everything from Opta has multiple free sources not least Opta themselves.

Progressive carries would be recoveries right?
Also is clearances missing or am I blind?

You have to click onto the 'Defensive Actions' tab - not sure why the link doesn't do that automatically!

Does FPL use 'recovery' as a metric? I thought it was just clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles that drove the new 'defensive contribution' thing?

Despite the new rules/amendments, FPL still failed on the transparency basis with regard to BPS. It is always a topic every season. Better if they award bonus points via match ratings from a football app(sofascore etc.) this way one can easily have a consensus & effective transparency in place.

I like Anderson and he is currently in my team. 107 points last season and would've got 36 more based on DC:s. That's 143 points, which is not bad for a 5,5 mid. Besides, his minutes are guaranteed. I see a lot of 4-5 pointers even without attacking returns.

I think good players (at least 100+) with huge DC-potential is the way to go. If you choose solid players with guaranteed minutes and big DC-potential, it's hard to go wrong.

Forest will be much weaker this season I think. But does that matter less for Anderson as he’ll be mainly getting DC points?

    Kelleher

Van de Ven, Wan-Bissaka, De Cuyper

    Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Ndiaye, Reijnders

    Isak, Watkins

    (4.0, Truffert, 4.0, 4.5)

Anyone else keen on Reijnders / Anderson in that 5.5 mf slot or is the money better spent with a 5.5 defender like Muñoz?

I'm waiting to see if Harvey Elliott gets a move to another PL club. He'd be the 5.5 I would go for instead of Reijnders and Anderson (who currently are the best options at that price)

He was quite clearly too good for the u21s though, hence why he won player of the tournament

I can understand the hesitation from people considering he just doesn't play that much but he would be a real quality addition to a mid table side

I'd be surprised if he wasn't considering his age / senior experience - Bellingham would do well too.

I think he'd be decent, very similar to Smith-Rowe

Smith-Rowe's a very apt comparison as they both have similar injury concerns for all their talent. You might get 30x 90's between the two of them combined if you are lucky.

Sorting the Man City mids by 'minutes played' is funny viewing. But I guess it's to be expected when they have about 10 players competing for 5 positions. Averages around 1700 mins per player.

Newcastle fans crying over the likely departure of Isak when they could get Wissa in his place. He scored the same amount of non pen goals as Isak last season playing in a worse team. Doesnt seem so bad to me. That guy is criminally under rated and was the star of my FPL season last year.

What good's that £100m going to do them when they're getting turned down by targets every week? Isak's the only world class striker in the league not named Haaland, and raises them up a level single-handedly - nobody's moving to Newcastle to play with Wissa.

              You melt.

If they get 125-150m for Isak and then buy Wissa I agree that they probably have a good deal there

I think DCs mean defenders will offer much better value per million than most forwards this season. If you pick a defender with guaranteed minutes and potential for 1) clean sheets, 2) attacking returns and 3) DCs, it's pretty hard to lose. Even ticking "just" two of these boxes will probably beat any sub 6,5 forward.

I'm seriously considering going 4-5-1 this season.

5-2-3 allows over 5 premium players and the £5.0m mids sat on your bench can still offer value thanks to defcon points.

In terms of value defenders are by far the best, obviously not including goalkeepers.
MIDs + FWDs pretty similar in this respect, but I think we will see significant improvements from Haaland, Solanke and Watkins this season.

No not even him. Will still start Havertz and try to do some super sub thing with Gyokeres.

Might as well start with him in that case, rather have a cameo + 1FT than Watkins vs Newcastle

      Kudus or Rodri?

I'd say Kudus to start because I can see Pep managing Rodri's minutes until he's fully match fit. Didn't seem like he was able to play 90 at the Club World Cup.

Hello guys, what do you think about my 1st draft this season:

      Kelleher Valdimarsson
      Murillo Konsa Udogie Rodon Esteve
      Salah Palmer Kudus Rogers Rodri
      Haaland Watkins Pedro

      Watkins > Gyokeres in GW2

Just get Gyokeres from GW 1 if your not going to keep Watkins.

Like it. Probably the most balanced Salah/Haaland team I’ve seen

Hi, is it possible to exclude one gw in fixture ticker when upgraded to chief scout? I need first 12 gw without gw3.

Anyone grab 4.0m GK Benda before he went on loan to Millwall and removed from the FPL?

Red flagged with 0.2% ownership. Pretty sure his price is locked.

Think Ndiaye is the consensus as it stands

Is it just Safari/iOS catching up on missed info, click on someone’s comments & the profile picture overlays the content.

        Another cracking improvement, not!

        Current draft:
        Kelleher | 4.0
Gvardiol Gabriel Udogie | Konsa 4.0
        Salah Palmer Saka Rogers Kudus
        Evanilson Welbeck | 4.5

Is the forward line too weak? Any feedback appreciated.

I've managed to get all the data by match for these now, but I do need to combine it with positional data to utilise it fully.

A quick look and I think 25 defenders would have gained 20 or more points last season from this new rule though.

For midfielders I think it's 17 who will gain more than 20 points.

What's absolutely what I expected, is that for players to get either they almost certainly have to play 90 minutes to get them!
The cut-off point is around 75 minutes, play less than that and almost no hope of the points.
