Simon Adingra (£5.5m) bagged his first Sunderland goal and Crystal Palace were involved in two hour-long games as the pre-season friendlies continued on Tuesday.

Piece by piece, we’re putting together a picture of every side as these warm-up matches continue.

Here’s what we saw in the latest kickabouts.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 MAINZ
CRYSTAL PALACE 2-3 MAINZ

  • Goals: Mateta | Esse, Lacroix
  • Assists: Sarr | Edouard, Sosa

Oliver Glasner split his squad across two 60-minute friendlies against Mainz in Austria.

The first XI sent out had a first-team feel about it, apart from the back three.

For the second friendly running, the Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) combo produced a goal.

It looked like the chance had gone when Sarr rounded the Mainz ‘keeper and was twice repelled but the winger had the composure to pick out Mateta, who stroked in, via a deflection, his second goal of pre-season.

Dean Henderson (£5.0m) was busy in the first game, making a string of fine stops to keep Mainz at bay. Even he couldn’t prevent a late leveller, which in itself was a rebound after another Henderson save.

Perhaps it was no surprise that he was getting his gloves muddied. The back three was composed of a midfielder Jefferson Lerma (£5.0m), youngster Mofe Jemide and a rusty-looking Chris Richards (£4.5m), who was making his first appearance of the summer. Daniel Munoz (£5.5m), himself late back after international commitments, looked a little off the pace, too – but then that’s exactly what these friendlies are for: fitness building.

It was the opposite in the second hour-long game: a mostly second-string side, with regulars Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m) and Marc Guehi (£4.5m) at the rear. Guehi himself was back from a minor injury.

At first glance, Henderson appears not to have much to worry about a wobbly display from Walter Benitez (£4.5m).

The Eagles went 3-0 down before Romain Esse (£5.0m) scored a fine goal to reduce the arrears. Palace’s second goalscorer was a potential Gameweek 1 target: defensive contribution magnet, and underrated set-piece threat, Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m) nodded home a Borna Sosa (£4.5m) free-kick. Sosa’s deliveries really look good but, as we’ve mentioned a few times already this summer, he first has to oust Tyrick Mitchell (£5.0m) at left wing-back.

Crystal Palace first XI v Mainz: Henderson, Richards (Rodney 45), Lerma, Jemide, Muñoz, Wharton, Hughes, Mitchell, Sarr, Eze, Mateta.

Crystal Palace second XI v Mainz: Benítez, Clyne, Lacroix, Guéhi, Ahamada (Cardines 30), Devenny, Kamada, Sosa, Rak-Sakyi (Rodney 46), Nketiah (Edouard 46), Esse.

HULL CITY 2-1 SUNDERLAND

  • Goal: Adingra
  • Assist: Talbi

After the initial buzz from their wave of summer signings, there’s perhaps a bit of realism setting in at Sunderland. Pre-season form is to be taken with a pinch of salt but back-to-back defeats to Hull City and Heart of Midlothian, and no wins in four, show there’s still work to be done ahead of the big kick-off.

Regis Le Bris is admittedly hard-hit by several injuries, particularly in defence. New left-back Reinildo (£4.0m) has also yet to make his debut after a post-Club World Cup break. Really, of the goalkeeper and back four on show at Hull, only Dan Ballard (£4.5m) – who shook off a mid-game knock to continue – and Trai Hume (£4.5m) are regulars.

“In an ideal world, you would have everyone in place but it’s never possible. So we manage the situation. For a player like Reinildo for example, with his background and experience, it will be easier for him than a young lad.” – Regis Le Bris

There was some joy further forward, at least, with two summer signings out wide combining for the Mackems’ only goal. Adingra was the scorer, finishing tidily from a Chemsdine Talbi (£5.0m) cut-back.

“We believe that these two wingers will have a huge impact for our game and against the opposition defence, but they need time. To create references, to understand the connection with their team mates. And this is in games as well as an in training.” – Regis Le Bris on Chemsdine Talbi and Simon Adingra

The visitors, encouragingly, had plenty of other openings, too, but the finishing was collectively tame – remember that Sunderland came up from the Championship with a meagre goal tally beaten by eight other second-tier sides.

Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5m) had one of the best openings, firing straight at the hosts’ goalkeeper from wide on the six-yard box. He’s one of the better £5.5m forward options for game-time guarantees, at least initially, but we’ve still got reservations about his goal-getting abilities.

Enzo Le Fee (£5.0m) was still on set plays and had a decent chance of his own but his major contribution in this match was less positive, inadvertently teeing up Hull for their leveller. The Tigers scored on the breakaway to seal the win, two Sunderland defenders being outmuscled in the process. More goals for hosts could have followed.

But facing very different sorts of opposition, including direct, physical types, in pre-season is exactly what Le Bris wants his side to experience before the meaningful stuff commences.

“The pre-season is set to create new habits through different experiences, so we tried to build our game model with new players and we need to live different experiences. This was the case at Hearts and we struggled to deal with direct play, we managed this situation with more efficiency here so we are growing as a team. We need two or three more games to be ready.” – Regis Le Bris

Sunderland XI: Moore; Hume (Tuterov 68), Ballard (Lavery 68), Seelt (J. Jones 68), H. Jones (Huggins 68); Sadiki (Browne 68), Diarra (Neil 68), Le Fée (Roberts 68); Talbi (Aleksic 68), Adingra (Ogunsuyi 68), Mayenda (Abdullahi 68).

My gut feeling watching this game is Gakpo is a better option than Ekitike, but Wirtz is clear. Good pressing from Wirtz.

We could end up with a nailed Liverpool CB at 4.5m if Guehi signs.

I think that's reason enough not to triple up in attack.

          Cunha Fernandes and Mbeumo.

Secondly are the first choice CBs :
          Yorro Martinez and De Lift
Maguire in his usual bench spot?

I think one is probably too much tbh mate. We’ve added some top players but still not sure how they all fit together, and Bruno in a midfield 2 is a recipe for disaster.

Dorgu, Yoro and De Ligt should be nailed, with Lisandro, Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw and Dalot fighting for the other two spots.

TL;DR - wait and see before committing to United assets. Worth remembering our opening fixtures are garbage too.

PLEASE. Especially Villa fans. What's the deal with this MALEN dude?

He's far from nailed on so what makes him such a great FF asset?

Both night and day, I know, but if Malen is nailed I may go him over Rogers to balance my squad out a bit more.

Not a Villa fan but I guess people are expecting him to get more minutes with Asencio and Rashford not at the club anymore. I still don't think he's a guaranteed starter.

Had a difficult start at the club, but he should benefit from a proper pre-season with us.

Bagged a couple of assists against Frankfurt on Saturday and generally looked lively, plus we've lost Asensio and Rashford, so depth-wise, we are lighter. I'm pretty sure he's ahead of Bailey in the pecking order and Rogers will be needed elsewhere, which is positive.

It's still a bit early for predictions but if we don't sign anyone, I can see a front four of Malen, McGinn, Rogers and Watkins v Newcastle.

Partly the eye test, partly 2 goals and 1 assist in 5 Champions League games last season. Good scoring record for Dortmund (30 in 94 games) and PSV too (40 in 81 games). Has the pedigree and the opportunity to make a mockery of a 5.5 price tag. Villa good fixtures through to GW8.

I don't rate him as a player unfortunately.

30 in 94 games for Dortmund is nothing special in the Bundesliga and I don't think he has pace, trickery or a particularly good eye for goal either. He's one of those 'on paper' players that I think will just not deliver. Happy to be proven wrong but I don't rate him.

I don't think so. They need a LW. Will keep an eye on preseason but I have a feeling Gakpo is underrated. He was already playing quite a lot and scored well last season when given the game time.

        I reckon they play 4-2-2-2

Alisson, Bradley/Frimpong, Konate, VvD, Kerkez, MacAllister, Gravenberch, Wirtz, Gakpo, Salah, Ekitike

If Ekitike isn't ready, they might play Wirtz or Gakpo false 9 and stick Szobo in midfield. I just don't think it's likely Gakpo misses out and they go a completely brand new front 3 in GW1 with Salah, Ekitike, Wirtz. It just seems too risky especially since Ekitike is more nominally a centre forward.

But yeah maybe too risky and you just cough up the extra 1m for Wirtz.

Biffas. You and me two. I can see a brace or assist at least GW1. Box to box player - he's the new (very cheap) De Bruyne. Lovely. And nailed since day 1.

Watkins will start for Villa even if he's halfway to Man Utd. Gyokeres has only just started training, his physical condition is unknown so far.

I think the FPL will want to see CBIT having a real effect on the game and I'm thinking of going with this back five who arguably should be priced another notch higher. I've excluded Murillo, Aina & Guehi to save any double ups and Agbadou might be the one to slot in there if two 4.5m are required.

    Tarkowski (5.5), Milenkovic (5.5). Collins (5.0), Lacroix (5.0) , AWB (4.5)

I think it makes sense to start with one of the 4.0m promoted defenders from Leeds or Burnley.

They should do ok factoring in DC points.

Not a bad idea but I cant avoid VVD, I think maybe Guehi at 0.5 cheaper than LaCroix but I'm mulling over bringing in tarkowski and/or milenkovic myself

Guehi's definitely a sound choice but I feel that the extra 0.4ppg that Lacroix earned more than Guehi last season just sways it slightly in his favour at the higher price.

did tark benefit more under dyche than moyes?

i do think if you can set and forget a 5mil def and get 155+ points, and a 4.5 and get 140+ points, its not bad. kinda takes the enjoyment out of fpl having less attack minded players though in your XI though

I've gone for 5 x 4.5 defs thinking the addition of CBIT will see them prove better value.

Allows Salah, Palmer, Haaland and Gyokeres in attack along with a Sunderland triple up of course.

    Team starting to settle:

    Kelleher, Kinsky
    VVD, AWB, Guehi, 4.0
    Salah, Wirtz, Palmer, Le Fee
    Gyokeres, Strand Larsen, Pedro

    Last two slots are either:
    A) Ndiaye + VdV
    B) Cucurella + Baleba

Baleba and Le Fee interchangeable right now so it's really A) vs B) Cucurella + 5.0

Guarantee they will - always happens on here. Already seen Bruno in more RMTs and reckon Wirtz will get the same treatment.

It was just insane last year how Salah didn’t score well in pre-season, people took him out in the final week and then he started the way he did. I started with him and Haaland

People are already doing it now with Bruno and Wirtz as you say, there will be people who have now taken out Salah from their teams and put Wirtz in because he scored

I look at pre-season for a players fitness. Their form in it is irrelevant

        1. x.jim.x
          • 11 Years

Nkunku is the one I'll always remember - people were coming up with some crazy mental gymnastics cos he scored a pen in pre-season.

Funny how people always look to "cover" Salah. Last season it was Jota, this season it'll be Wirtz.

That's pretty much my feeling too - you get a decent idea of who will be ready for the season and where the more versatile players could play, and that's about it. Community Shield is the only friendly that has any significance imo because at least you get a decent idea of what their starting XIs should be.

Wirtz looks nailed on in the 10 role for Liverpool whereas Bruno looks nailed on in a midfield 2 for United.

You said "Already seen Bruno in more RMTs and reckon Wirtz will get the same treatment." So I was pointing out that Wirtz is actually a good option whereas Bruno isn't IMO. This opinion is not just based on scoring in pre-season either.

            1. x.jim.x
              • 11 Years
              4 months, 8 days ago

I was saying that Bruno is in more teams now than last because of the West Ham game, and I expect the same to happen to Wirtz after today - I'm not trying to argue whether they're good options or who is better, it's irrelevant

I'm making a statement that Wirtz is actually a good option and Bruno is not IMO. I never said you were wrong in your statement so it's not an argument.

The OP asked a question and I replied below that preseason scoring is one of the many factors to take into account.

Only the dumb ignore form, but it's not easy to separate quality from glitter. Mahrez, Gross, Payet...last season Rogers & Bobb (unfortunate injury) were my standouts in the past 5-6 seasons. Purely based on pre-season form.
