With the start of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2025/26 growing ever nearer, three-time top 500 finisher FPL General provides his top five tips for Gameweek 1 and beyond.

FPL pre-season: Malen + Watkins again, Xhaka debut, secretive Man City 2

The FPL site is down – but you can still get your team rated for Gameweek 1 here!

1. EMBRACE THE NEW SCORING SYSTEM

FPL 2025/26: Huge rule change as defensive contributions come in 1

We’ve got a new scoring system. We’ve got very attractive defenders across the board. We’ve got the Moises Caicedos (£5.5m) and Rodris (£6.5m) of this world, who are in our thinking, probably for the first time ever for many of us.

We’ve got to play the game that’s in front of us now. This is essentially a new FPL game this season. We’re going to have very different scorers and very different players in our teams. I think it’s dangerous to just ignore that and stick to the way you’ve always played the game. So, embracing the new scoring system is key.

That should be reflected in your tinkering. You should be playing around with all sorts of players and looking in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area at the defensive contributions (DC) from last season, for example, to give you an idea of which players are going to get a big boost this year or certainly have the potential to do so.

It’s not obviously ‘forget everything you’ve done before’ because a lot of the bread and butter of FPL is still the same: goals, assists, clean sheets. But there’s a much wider pool to choose from now. It would be easy to just say, “Ah, I’m not too bothered about this.” But I think we have to be because it’s going to make a big difference to the scoring.

2. PICK PROVEN PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS

FPL Gameweek 38 round-up: Goals, assists, bonus points + stats

This is more of a Gameweek 1 tip! It’s a very simplistic one but it’s one that’s very easy to kind of forget about when there are shiny new toys. We’ve got Florian Wirtz (£8.5m), who is an incredible footballer playing for the champions this year. We’ve got Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m), who has an incredible goalscoring record in Portugal, coming to Arsenal, who will be fighting for the title as well. He certainly improves their chances of winning it this year.

But they’re new to the league and we’ve seen many times before: incredible players don’t always instantly become incredible Premier League players. It’s a totally different ballgame. And for that reason, I like keeping it simple in Gameweek 1.

Imagine there was no break in the summer and it’s kind of a continuation from Gameweek 38 of 2024/25 to Gameweek 1 of 2025/26. You know which players are good for FPL. You know which teams have good fixtures. You know who the talismans are: Jared Bowen (£8.0m), Chris Wood (£7.5m), Ollie Watkins (£9.0m).

Who did well last year? Who’s reliable? Who’s going to get the minutes? And then after a couple of weeks, I can see what Wirtz looks like, what role he’s playing, if he’s taking set pieces etc. Gyokeres will be up to full speed after a couple of weeks. We’ll see if he’s settling in well.

So, pick proven players in Gameweek 1 and adjust accordingly later. I don’t think you can go too far wrong with that.

Your Mohamed Salahs (£14.5m), your Erling Haalands (£14.0m) – they won’t be in my team this year (I’m going maverick!) but they’re very sensible picks.

3. AVOID TRIPLE-UPS!

FPL Gameweek 16 round-up: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats

This is again more for Gameweek 1 because, of course, we do end up with triple-ups from the big teams when they’ve got good fixtures at a later date.

But this season, no big team has a fantastic run of fixtures to begin with. And there’s plenty of unknowns at Liverpool, at Arsenal, at Manchester United. I probably shouldn’t put United there as a big team, but I’m hoping this year they will be!

The simple idea here is, if you have a triple up of say, Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.0m), Declan Rice (£6.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) for Gameweek 1, you might very quickly realise that Gyokeres is a must-have. Then, you need two transfers to get him. You could say the same about City and Liverpool assets.

So, if you only double up on any one team, it leaves the door open for the best asset from that club that you may not have to begin with.

4. USE THE FPL WATCHLIST

You might not know this but the FPL website has a feature called the ‘Watchlist’. If you click into any player’s profile, at the bottom, it says ‘Add to Watchlist’. You can then find your Watchlist on the transfers page.

What I do every week, once I’ve watched all the highlights and looked at the stats, is update my own Watchlist. I usually do this every Monday or Tuesday.

It’s very simple. I go through all 20 teams on the Premier League website and just add players each week that I like the look of and/or who are showing up in the stats, have got good fixtures etc. I’m also removing players from the Watchlist that I no longer like.

And then, when it comes to making a transfer on Friday night or Saturday morning, I open it. I only ever transfer in a player from there.

What I find it does is stops me from falling into traps or bandwagon jumps that I don’t agree with. It just streamlines things and makes life easier, saving time when it comes to making moves.

Even for Gameweek 1, it’s really useful because we’re changing our squads all the time as new information emerges. Martin Dubravka (£4.0m) and Marc Guiu (£4.5m) moving to Burnley and Sunderland, for instance, suddenly brings them into focus and onto my Watchlist.

What I do is just basically pick a pool of about 50 or 60 to begin with, add them all to the Watchlist and then every day I’m slowly removing one or two. Eventually, I’m down to a more manageable number.

5. USE PRICE POINTS

Best £5.0m-£5.5m forwards for FPL 2025/26: All 21 assessed

Flexibility is advisable in the early weeks of a season, as we try to suss out who the best players are. Price points are a good indicator of how flexible your squad is.

So, if you’ve got a draft that you really like, what you should do is ignore the player names, ignore the teams they played for, and just look at prices only. Maybe even just write them down or stick them into a Word document.

For example, £14.0m forward, £9.0m forward, £4.5m forward, and do that throughout the team. And then ask yourself: how do I get from A to B to C? And that can maybe help you with a 50/50 decision as a deciding factor.

A very simplistic example of a price point is Jarred Bowen at £8.0m. There are loads of £7.5m forwards, so if Bowen doesn’t work out, there’s an escape route.

It’s also an example of why the £5.5m forward is a dangerous price point because there’s no outball there. You’re going to have to upgrade, probably, unless you’re content with a Guiu on your bench. Again, the £4.5m midfielder is probably a dangerous price point nowadays – especially if you don’t have any money in the bank – when we’ve got good £5.0m options.

So, price points are really useful and you should definitely look at them in Gameweek 1 in particular.

Absolutely. Massive attacking potential as well as DC points. He got 9 contributions vs Liverpool and created a couple of golden chances spurned by attackers (and Mitchell)

Lacroix had the 4th most goal attempts for defenders last season. TAA & Porro had 24 each, Munoz 23, and Lacroix, Gvardiol and Schar each had 22.

Lacroix has nice defensive contributions. Munoz would be worth .5 last season but I'm not sure he is worth .5 more this season.

There's a stat in the members area which is incredibly useful. It's Defensive Contribution success rate %. Basically, it says how many times a player would have gotten the DC bonus as a % of their appearances.

Tarkowski is by far the highest with 66%. That means 2/3 games he starts on 4 points. That's huge. He's way ahead of the other options and I really want to start with him this year especially since Everton have decent first few fixtures and a mostly unchanged defense.

From this stat, there are some hidden 4.5m gems for DCs. Anyone with a DC Success% above 40% I'd consider elite. Of those, there are only 3 that are 4.5m that fit that criteria:
Andersen (Ful), Agbadou, Pinnock. I like these picks. Agbadou I like quite a lot since Wolves defense improved a lot and they have a bad fixture in GW1 which I feel works in his favor in terms of ownership.

Midfielders, I'm looking at 5.5ms and under. Here there are only a few as well:
Anderson, Gomes, Gueye, Christie, Baleba, Bentancur, Cook

The highest for this stat is not actually Anderson. It's Gueye who's also 5.5m. But he has notably less attacking threat than Anderson who managed a respectable 2g,6a last year. There's a reason Anderson is the 5.5m steady-eddy of choice. Gomes also has a higher conversion rate than Anderson to DCs but again, less threat.

Christie, Baleba and Cook are notably 5.0m. It's really too bad that these 3 are all doubtful in one way or another. Baleba being linked with a move away, Christie doubtful through injury and Cook suspended. All 3 could be a decent 7th choice cheap anchor in a team with big hitters that needs a cheap enabler.

I'm thinking of reworking my defense strategy. Maybe I go Tarkowski, Murillo and then a combination of the 4.5m DC monsters like Andersen, Agbadou and a 4.0m. Lean heavily on the DCs and just trust that over the season you'll reap enough additional points to offset any attacking threat from the likes of Munoz etc.

I was tempted by Tarkowski today as well, I could start with him over Van Dijk and just keep him until GW12 at least. It's just I want 1 or 2 Arsenal defenders from GW7 so it probably makes more sense for me to have a 6 million slot but I'd love Tarkowski in if I could

I will WC by GW7 latest for Arsenal so I'm not concerned about that. It's just the first few games and to have Tarkowski start 2/3 of them on 4 points plus whatever clean sheets, bonus and random goals he might score is really enticing.

If you are wildcarding GW7 latest to get Arsenal I think Tarkowski is very good to start with and see how he gets on. He can play pretty much every week

There are other considerations around it too though. One being you have to play them every game, you won't land those %'s. I don't think this system will work for rotating 4.5's can just see loads of situations where you bench the wrong one. It's like rotating keepers and getting that wrong. Which is what makes Tarkowski and Murillo (better than Milenkovic by a mile on this) so appealing as you feel comfortable set and forgetting. I'm not set and forgetting Agbadou or whoever when Wolves ship 60 goals a season.

Agbadou is a pretty disguised pick. Wolves' defensive stats were way stronger when they added him to their team in January and his DC accumulation is elite.

            I think he's a very good pick.

Might be the most analytical team I've put together so far.

        Sanchez Dubravka
        Tarkowski Murillo Kilman Andersen Rodon
        Palmer Wirtz Reijnders Anderson Sarr
        Haaland Watkins Ekitike

        BB1

I have 0.5m ITB to upgrade either Wirtz > Fernandes or Ekitike > Gyokeres in GW2.

It has lots of DC point monsters - Tarkowski, Murillo, Anderson. Even the 4.5m defenders are huge on DC points and Rodon should also be really good for them. Sarr is a punt on the GW1 BB to hopefully get something against Burnley.

The GW2 plan allows my team to retain some flexibility depending on who looks more promising out of Fernandes or Gyokeres once the tough first game is out of the way and so that my attack isn't stacked too heavily on one team.

I'm really liking it. Let's see what team news is forthcoming though.

I also want Mateta and can't afford Warkins so will be prepared to switch it up early if need be.

        Salah Palmer Reijnders Kudus KDH
        Gyokeres Haaland (Guiu)

          Looks really good.

One issue may be Mateta if Palace play a full strength team for the Conf League playoff.

You could start with Pedro and move to Mateta in GW4. Which also gives you time to see what happens with Eze, Guehi etc.

The bench is also very weak without at least a 4.5 DEF. Reijnders will be rotated and then you’re stuck playing a 4.0. You could downgrade Sanchez, upgrade one 4.0 to a 4.5.

        A few more takes:

        - Brentford may struggle early on: replacing Mbuemo, Wissa, Norgaard and Flekken with Outtara, Kalimuendo/Thiago, Henderson and Kelleher doesn’t fill you with confidence. Avoid for now

        - Everton now look like they have more options, especially if they sign a new RW. Grealish, Alcaraz, Mcneil, KDH, Ndiaye, new RW sharing minutes across 3 positions. Ndiaye may not be nailed on for 90 mins, but also could get more chances playing with more creative players.

        - Bournemouth will be a different team after the international break: Diakite, Adli and likely another CB to bed in suggests they could be vulnerable in GW 1-3

        - Liverpool, whether they sign Isak or not will be a changed attack with many more routes to goal than Salah. Also given how vulnerable they’ve looked on the counter, I would expect in the big games against fast counter sides like Newcastle and Arsenal to play Szobo in a midfield 3 with Mac and Grav, leaving Ekitike and Gakpo fighting for one position

        - Man United also will be a much changed attack and although Bruno will be the fulcrum whether he plays AM or CM, his shots and final passes will be way down. Question whether the overall increase in team goals and his DefCon points offsets this

        - Brighton look a fun attack and Mitoma, Rutter and Minteh could all be viable options depending on your mins risk appetite. But they still look exposed defensively and highly dependent on Baleba holding the midfield together. Unless De Cuyper is very attacking their defence looks an avoid.

        - Forest attack looks blunt without Elanga and with Ndoye bedding in: Mcatee may provide more variety but even then, its defence or nothing especially with the changes to forwards BPS

I quite like this data driven team, no major changes for me now I think

        Sanchez - Dubravka
Tarkowski - Murillo - Van de Ven - Guehi - Esteve
        Palmer - Wirtz - Gordon - Dewsbury Hall - 4.5
        Haaland - Watkins - Mateta
