With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) nearing, our pundits are giving us their all-important team reveals!

Here, FPL Milanista – who has three top 5k finishes in the last five seasons – explains why he’s going with Arsenal’s premium midfielder.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

The 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic we’ve seen in recent memory, not just because of player transfers and fixtures.

It’s because of a major rules tweak that’s already changing the way we look at our squads: defensive contributions (DC).

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS – A CHANGE IN FORMATION?

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Jota, Martinelli + Murillo 2

In short, defenders will get rewards more fairly for their real-life work. This might just flip the FPL meta on its head.

Historically, defenders in FPL have lived or died by clean sheets, with only the attacking full-backs offering consistent value.

But this year, blocks, interceptions, and other defensive contributions are actually rewarded, making even centre-backs more viable.

This change significantly raises the floor for defenders. Suddenly, you’re not just relying on a clean sheet or the odd goal from a corner – you’re getting steady returns from solid performances.

As a result, I think we’ll see many FPL managers pivoting to a 4-4-2 or even a 4-5-1. These are formations that FPL managers have drifted away from in recent years but could now offer optimal balance and points potential.

Personally, I’m seriously weighing the value of a strong fourth defender versus a mid-priced forward. Right now, I’m on a 3-5-2, but the more I look at defensive value (especially among £4.5–£5.5m defenders with high CBRIT potential), the more tempted I am to switch.

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost

With double the chips this season, the temptation to use a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 was and is still very real. There’s a certain logic to it: everyone’s fit, fixtures are fresh, and we’ve had time to tinker.

However, we have been gifted a few incredible budget-friendly players in Marc Guiu (£4.5m) – a potential starting striker at a bargain-bin price – and Martin Dubravka, who could/should be a starting £4.0m goalkeeper. They are too good to ignore in any draft we make, and the fact that we are not sure of their fitness to start the season adds ambiguity. It is a valid reason to shelve the Bench Boost for now, unless one is prepared to ignore such minimum price gifts and build a strong 15-man squad with an eye to Wildcarding early and fitting them in sooner than later.

GAMEWEEK 1 TEAM REVEAL

Now, onto the individual picks.

Rip it apart one last time.

    Verbruggen-Dubravka
    RAN-Porro-N.Williams (Konsa-Diouf)
    Palmer-Wirtz-Malen-Reijnders (Miley)
    Haaland-Gyokeres-Ekitike

Hi Ray! Difficult to compare, because of total different price points. I would say Reijnders, because of the 5.5. I like Wirtz at 8.5 more then Marmoush

Hello fellas, decided this is the one i'm going to start the season with. The strategy of picking proven, kind of fixture-proof players last season brought me very good rank, so going with more of the same:

    Sels
    Neco, Van de Ven, Munoz
    Salah, Palmer, Gakpo, Minteh
    Watkins, Evanilson, Mateta

    Petrović, DeCuyper, Konsa, King

FH in 3, WC around 7.

    - defence rotates very well until wildcard
    - 5 pen takers, not that it matters much but an added bonus
    - all proven players with only Minteh being a bit of a punt, but the price point is okay with some other options available if it doesn't work out
    - all attacking teams, don't have to rely on max 2 big chances per match like if I had players from WHU, EVE, promoted teams..

What is your say, good to go?

    1. Jullepuu
      • 6 Years

I really like it but I don't see the point for Petrovic. I would upgrade Minteh to Sarr with that money. Also, I slightly prefer Porro + Richards over Munoz and VDV

      1. Silecro
        • 8 Years
        3 months, 23 days ago

Yeah, I was planning to play Petrović in GW2 and 4, but may downgrade him. Regarding Munoz, he is for me personally non-negotiable. Monster down that right flank, always gets in dangerous positions to shoot and even more creates good chances, and on top of it all, very solid for DC's as well. Got 9 contributions vs Liverpool the other day

        1. Jullepuu
          • 6 Years

Are you planning to play Munoz every week? I think that Porro is just as attacking and has better fixtures

          1. Silecro
            • 8 Years
            3 months, 23 days ago

Yeah. Possibly i'm just contemplating benching him for GW1 vs che, and then play him the rest of the way
GW2 - vs NFO who cant score for their dear life
            GW3 - i'm on FH
            GW4 - SUN
            GW5 - whu

Oh yeah I forgot your plan to play FH in gw3. Munoz is a great pick then

I see 3 pen takers. Salah, Palmer and Mateta.

Tielemans likely on pens for Villa, Kluivert for Bournemouth.

Don't like Evanilson or Minteh that much and you have 0.5m more in goal than is needed imo. You'll play Sels every week until WC7. But I suppose if you have faith in the two guys you punted on that's fine.

      1. Silecro
        • 8 Years
        3 months, 23 days ago

Kluivert reportedly having a bit of a trouble making recovery, so I expect at least game or two without him, so probably Evanilson next in line then. Watkins..yeah, but that's okay, not that I have him for pens. To be completely fair, I would rather he doesnt take them, given his record.

I suppose downgrading Petro to 4.0 is one change I could make

Competing with Chekri and Foden for 10 role behind Haaland. Could play on the wings but competing with Doku/Bobb/Foden/Silva

    A or B?

    A) Bruno + Gakpo + Reijnders
    B) Wirtz + Rogers + I.Sarr

Really like Rogers but his price is awkward... did consider Bruno+Rogers+Reijnders but that means no Liverpool cover which seems disastrous.

Draft #2. Possibly BB2. Not sure on Georginio but who else for up to £6M?

    Sánchez
    Murillo Porro N.Williams
    M.Salah Palmer B.Fernandes Georginio Anderson
    Watkins J.Pedro
    - Dúbravka Konsa Estève Guiu

    1. Ausman

Instead of Georginio consider Baleba. I have him in my team and think he could be a hidden gem once you factor in defcon points. Last season he would have earned 30 defcons which would have taken him to 117 total points, the same as Kulusevski (6.5M) and Odegaard (8.0M)
      At 5M I feel he's definately being overlooked 🙂

    Option A or B?

    A

    Sels
Cucurella - Pedro Porro - Murillo
    Palmer - Wirtz - Salah (C) - Reijnders - Dewsbury-Hall
    Bowen - Gyökeres (VC)

Dúbravka - Marc Guiu - Rodon - Gudmundsson

    B

    Verbruggen
Andersen - Pedro Porro - Aina
    Palmer - Wirtz - Gakpo - Reijnders
    Watkins - Gyökeres (VC) - Haaland (C)

    Bench:
    Areola - Digne - Dewsbury-Hall - Murillo

Slot rarely uses Gakpo CF. On Sunday when Ekitike went off, I think it was Wirtz who went false 9.

Many have Forest double-up in defence (Sels + def), but I barely see any love for Aina here (if you opt for Sanchez in goal).

Despite the 5.5’s (Mur/Mil) having higher DC potential, what am I missing? 0.5 saving would go a long way.
