With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) nearing, our pundits are giving us their all-important team reveals!

Here, FPL Milanista – who has three top 5k finishes in the last five seasons – explains why he’s going with Arsenal’s premium midfielder.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

The 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic we’ve seen in recent memory, not just because of player transfers and fixtures.

It’s because of a major rules tweak that’s already changing the way we look at our squads: defensive contributions (DC).

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS – A CHANGE IN FORMATION?

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Jota, Martinelli + Murillo 2

In short, defenders will get rewards more fairly for their real-life work. This might just flip the FPL meta on its head.

Historically, defenders in FPL have lived or died by clean sheets, with only the attacking full-backs offering consistent value.

But this year, blocks, interceptions, and other defensive contributions are actually rewarded, making even centre-backs more viable.

This change significantly raises the floor for defenders. Suddenly, you’re not just relying on a clean sheet or the odd goal from a corner – you’re getting steady returns from solid performances.

As a result, I think we’ll see many FPL managers pivoting to a 4-4-2 or even a 4-5-1. These are formations that FPL managers have drifted away from in recent years but could now offer optimal balance and points potential.

Personally, I’m seriously weighing the value of a strong fourth defender versus a mid-priced forward. Right now, I’m on a 3-5-2, but the more I look at defensive value (especially among £4.5–£5.5m defenders with high CBRIT potential), the more tempted I am to switch.

BENCH BOOST IN GAMEWEEK 1?

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost

With double the chips this season, the temptation to use a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 was and is still very real. There’s a certain logic to it: everyone’s fit, fixtures are fresh, and we’ve had time to tinker.

However, we have been gifted a few incredible budget-friendly players in Marc Guiu (£4.5m) – a potential starting striker at a bargain-bin price – and Martin Dubravka, who could/should be a starting £4.0m goalkeeper. They are too good to ignore in any draft we make, and the fact that we are not sure of their fitness to start the season adds ambiguity. It is a valid reason to shelve the Bench Boost for now, unless one is prepared to ignore such minimum price gifts and build a strong 15-man squad with an eye to Wildcarding early and fitting them in sooner than later.

GAMEWEEK 1 TEAM REVEAL

Now, onto the individual picks.

Im currently on big at the back, pickford 442. Im not happy about it, but what Im reading about your Cucus and Frimpongs I can definitely see them outscoring the 6.5 mids.

I dont want to do it. Everyone says not to do it again. But its where I'm at last couple of days.

I think the biggest downside is it restricts a promising BB as the budget mids are meh (comparing to budget def), but yeah BB is just a one-week thing and it may not be necessary to consider at this point.

Not a hot take, but I'm starting to think there is more value in the 5-5.5 defs than mids. Anyone else considering a 442 over 352, or to rotate between them?

the elephant in the room though, is that CSs are rarer than ever

Having said that, with DCs, attacking threat and lack of value options in attack, I too am considering 442. Got off to one of my best ever starts with a 442 several years back

Also, allows a pivot to 3-4-3/3-5-2 as you like

EO is the deciding factor. Has to be salah with bou in gw1. You can fit in either wirtz or Bowen no matter who you pick and captain from haaland or salah. In an isolated bet on who gets the most points in gw1 though, I’ll give the slight advantage to haaland.

I was on two 4.5 keepers so that's an option. If your 'main 3' defenders are set and forgets then having a pair of 4.0 defenders to warm the bench isn't the worst in the world.

Personally, as much as I love Mitoma, I'm not a huge fan of Brighton's early fixtures, but having a playing 5.5M forward on the bench for emergencies and playing 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 is a decent shout.

So I'd probably go with D being the 'safest' choice, with A and B being fine but maybe swingier depending on your other player's fixtures.

I was on Kudus for a long term, but the fact that Spurs are after Eze leaves me with questions over where Kudus will play. I'd go Ndiaye over these two, but if you can find 0.5 I'd bump up to Rogers as he's back in training.

Munoz to Lacroix is an option. He shows as being better value in my figures. I like both your B & C though so you could save 1.5m.

I like the Lacroix pick as well. He does give a bit more certainty than Williams but Williams has the combination of good DC potential and attacking potential.

If I find another 0.5m such as Fullkrug instead of Larsen, I could upgrade Sarr to Wirtz (along with Salah, Palmer, Bruno and Watkins)

Fair enough, although last season Lacroix would have got 34 DC points, as opposed to Williams' 18 DC points. They both scored 'one' goal, but Neco got one more assist. I like Sarr, and upgrading to Wirtz I like even more, but I much prefer Larsen to Fullkrug. Just my opinion.

Currently rocking a forward 3 of Haaland, J Pedro and Ekitike. I'm starting to ask myself should I downgrade Milenkovic to N Williams to get the extra 0.5 to go with Watkins/ Gyokeres over Ekitike. I do like having Wirtz and Ekitike double up (No Salah), but maybe, given Liverpool's fixtures after Bournemouth aren't great, its perhaps more beneficial to have that 9m price point in place with Watkins. Thoughts?

    1. sthelenslad92
      • 10 Years

I'd swerve Ekitike, too much uncertainty about the Isak move for a player that price to be benched.

I'm not too concerned over Isak coming in. I think the preferred front 3 would be Ekitike, Isak, Salah and its Gakpo to miss out. I could be wrong of course. Its frustrating, I really want to start with Ekitike but as the deadline draws nearer I know I'll lose my nerve and go with Watkins... cos it makes sense to given the fixtures.

    Milenkovic - Collins - Andersen - Rodon - Esteve

You can only bench two of them.

Thoughts on this? I *think* I am satisfied with this!

    Sels
    Porro Frimpong Cucu
    Palmer Saka Reijinders Bruno Wirtz
    Ekitike Watkins

    Dub Reinildo Esteve Guiu

    Cheers!

    Final decision for my team

    A: Semenyo/Rogers + Fullkrug
    B: Bruno + Guiu

I think Bruno on his own might be better than all of A combined, but I hate having effectively a dead spot on the bench and it means I'd probably have to go 4-4-2 in GW2

B and just leave Guiu to collect dust on the bench.

Midfield lacks any of the proven big hitters.

    Verbruggen (Dubravka)
    Williams Vdv Konsa Esteve ________
    Salah Palmer Rogers Reijnders Kdh
    Haaland Larsen ________

I'm pretty much set on this team. Just down to 2 options
    A) Dorgu + Fullkrug.. Gives me a full 15 and will rotate these 2 /play both if Reijnders/Kdh flop

    B) VVD/Frimpong/RAN + Guiu..
Will play 3 -5 - 2 or 4-4-2 most weeks with Guiu permabenched

    Really struggling with this

    Please choose

    A - Murillo & Gakpo
    B - Konsa & Wirtz

Already have Sels in goal if that makes a difference
