What a return to the Premier League for Sunderland, who marked their top-flight homecoming with a 3-0 thumping of West Ham United.

So, which Fantasy picks caught the eye for the Black Cats – and should we be worried about players from West Ham United?

We take a look in our Scout Notes.

BALLARD’S PERFECT GAME

Centre-halves from promoted clubs are nearly always £4.0m. Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk (£4.5m) is an exception this season, as he’s got a shot at penalties.

Sunderland’s Dan Ballard (£4.5m) is another anomaly – and FPL have clearly done their research.

There are two reasons he’s a little bit more expensive: goal threat and defensive contribution (DC) potential.

He scored three goals in the Championship last season, despite only starting 15 games of an injury-affected campaign.

Ballard also averaged over 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBITs) per 90 minutes in the second tier – and imagine how much more defensive work he’ll have to do in the Premier League.

It all came together in a perfect performance on Saturday. Ballard scored, snaffled DC points, scooped maximum bonus and kept a clean sheet to emerge from the Stadium of Light with a 17-pointer.

Such was his menace from set plays against the Hammers that he’s had more shots from the six-yard box (three) than any other Premier League player in Gameweek 1 so far.

SEELT INJURY GIVES ALDERETE A CHANCE

Poor Jensen Seelt (£4.0m) didn’t manage any of what Ballard did. Limping off after 53 minutes, he was marooned on one point as his side went on to bag a clean sheet.

Seelt was on borrowed time anyway, with new signing Omar Alderete (£4.0m) expected to replace him as the left-sided centre-half sooner rather than later. That came as soon as the second half of Gameweek 1.

Alderete even claimed an assist upon his introduction, whipping in a ball for Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5m) to nod in.

“I don’t think it’s really serious. He played well the first part of the game and after that Omar came in and he showed that now we probably have a bit more depth for our centre-backs. So it’s positive.” – Regis Le Bris on Jensen Seelt’s injury

With Burnley up next, there’s every chance that the Black Cats make it two clean sheets from two – that’d be as many as Ipswich Town managed in the whole of 2024/25!

Certainly, with their low block and combative midfield three in front of the defence, they look – at a very early glance – a darned sight more defensively competent than last year’s rabble.

“I think we showed today that the team worked well and the team was really hard to beat with a mid to low block.” – Regis Le Bris

GUIU UNUSED – AND FACING A BATTLE

Let’s get one thing straight before we begin: Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is, still, the best bet for minutes among £4.5m forwards in the medium term.

But the Chelsea loanee, like his owners in FPL, may have to be patient.

He was at least on the bench on Saturday, despite a limited pre-season.

But it was not just Mayenda who started but also Wilson Isidor (£5.5m) who came on ahead of Guiu against the Hammers, with £4.5m forward remaining unused.

To make things worse, Mayenda and Isidor both scored. Both goals should have been stopped, if we’re being party-poopers, with Mayenda’s header one of the slowest you’ll ever see and Isidor’s shot creeping under Mads Hermansen (£4.5m).

Regis Le Bris, however, remains a fan of both of Guiu’s positional rivals.

“Last season they showed how good they were and for me it was obvious that they have the quality because we’ll have strong opponents in front of us and we’ll have to defend as a team. They work well and they have this quality to attack the space in behind.” – Regis Le Bris on Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor

While Sunderland’s xG of 0.68 shows that there’s still a question mark over goalscoring, Habib Diarra (£5.5m) caught the eye from midfield with his bursts into the box. Wingers Simon Adingra (£5.5m) and Chemdsine Talbi (£5.0m) bagged assists, too.

HAMMER BLOW

Graham Potter is the new favourite in the sack race! So say the bookies off the back of this miserable loss.

It could have been different in the first half, with Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) looking lively and twice going close. As ever, he’s the one dragging the team up by their bootstraps.

El Hadji Malick Diouf (£4.5m) also exhibited his undoubted attacking threat, seeing his goalbound shot cleared at the last moment by the superb Ballard. Diouf had three shots in all, also creating two chances.

Above: Diouf was West Ham’s leading player for expected goal involvement (xGI) in Gameweek 1

After the break, though, nothing much of note. Chance creating was a problem under Potter at the back-end of last season and so it was again on Saturday, with the visitors mustering just 0.56 xG.

It was also an inglorious debut from Hermansen, preferred over Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) straight away, but we’ll maybe chalk it up to rustiness and nerves. His distribution was good and he also made a top stop from Diarra.

if he continues to start I'd hold fire. West Ham looked *quite* threatening in the first half from the highlights I saw (orchestrated via Bowen). If Chelsea look like they're missing Colwill then hold fire and gather another week's worth of info

The fact that he played 90 and wasn't hooked surprised me. Potter kept him on the pitch when he needed goals so that's positive.

Pretty much agree with Davos above. Watched the Brighton game and they looked pretty sluggish. I really dislike GW moves in general but even aside from the goal Reijnders movement was brilliant and he just looks a gift at 5.5m. Don't expect he'll get many DC pts if City maintain this kind of control (perhaps not really tested yet) but can definitely see him being something like 20/21 Gundogan

I'm not so sure. I can see Sunderland doing a Fulham and not playing their Chelsea striker (except in the league cup) despite the financial consequences. He didn't even sub on yesterday. Kroupi seems like the best 4.5 forward now.

Guiu has a clause in his contract that means he has to play a certain amount of games. Nobody knows how many, but I'd be surprised if he ends up sitting on the bench every week. He can do that at Chelsea

Putting out your best players and a team that gives you the best chance of winning is a bigger concern for the manager.

Once Mark (FPL Putin) got absolute power over FPL, I'm sure the very first thing he did was ask to see how the price changes worked, tweaked the formula to his liking and then messaged Mode and his mates on the WhatsApp group.

I'd get him in probably but not sure I'd want to lose Rogers after one GW against to Newcastle. They're a good side. Some seem to have forgotten (cos of a bit of a shaky transfer window and all the Isak noise) that.

I'm not normally one to play an early wild card but there is merit to playing it now. It's not been a complete disaster (40 with 4 to go) but could have been a lot better. Konsa's suspension could push me into it. Is it
          a) over reactionary/chasing this week's points
          b) admitting that there's major room for improvement and hit it before price rises?

Not sure without seeing your team. If you look objectively at the next couple of GWs and the players you have without overplaying what has happened in one GW do you have players you expect can score well? If so then a WC could be a trap

Depends on where KDH plays on Monday & how he looks I guess; might just start Kudus there. City weren't really tested defensively at all but did play an extremely high line - not sure if they'll repeat that but Kudus could probably exploit it better than Bellegarde/Munetsi

50 points with 6 to go, 5 of which are differential roles of the dice including Bruno.

My rough plan is to hold until the international break then shake it up.

Maybe even reverse it as people are piling in, though I doubt that last season repeats itself.

Isak should be an option by then.

Loads of 'rogue' scores including from Sunderland players beyond the narrow views on these pages. Though admittedly I didn't go there myself.

I am doing same - reassess at IB having not made any transfers at all. With Salah though, he will be good cos he is good. I just don't see him being the focal point now given all the new signings. Haaland is still the focal point

I'm going to wait on Haaland still. Took the 2nd goal well but it wasn't a a rip-up-your-team performance imo and Wolves were very poor so I'll give it a few more weeks to weigh the relative value v other premiums

Not true. Becasue everyone that have salah will keep him. And the only way to get haaland in u will need 2 transfer. As long as this few weeks haaland continue haul for us we will be good.

No - everyone will own him at that price. He won't start every game will he, but at 5.5 with such upside everyone will own him soon

36 points from him and Haaland.

I suspect that Man Utd and Arsenal will have a fair few goals so there will be more options later on today.

I know - they pretty much saved my GW. I'm a bit worried about the Bruno pick after what Amorim said about wanting him to stick to his deeper role in the pre-match presser but I'm giving him until after the Burnley game to see. On Reijnders though, I can't see there being any better 5.5 mids. Maybe the Wolves guy if he starts playing and is on pens

Remember Rodri and Foden need to get minutes and Saviniho if he stays. Man city midfielders inevitably get outscored by other midfielders because of rotation

Rodri will take Nico's place. Not really sure what will happen with Foden this season tbh but I guess he would play the role that Silva was in yesterday

                  Nope.

Reijnders is the star player now, he'll start most games.

Anyone know why Malen was given so few minutes? Did the red card kill the game from an attacking POV for Villa? Would need to decide on Malen -> Reijnders today if I was pulling the trigger (price rise tonight)

Villa killed the game from an attacking point of view after about 5 mins from what I heard and saw.

Started off electric, end to end but then it was all Newcastle who were wasteful in front of goal, especially Gordon.

Villa were flat before the red card.

Knee jerk Caceido to Reindeers before he’s even played? I went slow and steady over Pep rotation but it already looks a mistake.

                        Depends what Salah does.

He started the game well but I'd he hadn't scored 94 mins in I'm sure there would be loads of hits and teams being ripped up

The wildcard route is probably the sensible one, wait until gw4 when the transfer window has closed.

Isak has to be a factor this season.
