What a return to the Premier League for Sunderland, who marked their top-flight homecoming with a 3-0 thumping of West Ham United.

So, which Fantasy picks caught the eye for the Black Cats – and should we be worried about players from West Ham United?

We take a look in our Scout Notes.

BALLARD’S PERFECT GAME

Centre-halves from promoted clubs are nearly always £4.0m. Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk (£4.5m) is an exception this season, as he’s got a shot at penalties.

Sunderland’s Dan Ballard (£4.5m) is another anomaly – and FPL have clearly done their research.

There are two reasons he’s a little bit more expensive: goal threat and defensive contribution (DC) potential.

He scored three goals in the Championship last season, despite only starting 15 games of an injury-affected campaign.

Ballard also averaged over 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBITs) per 90 minutes in the second tier – and imagine how much more defensive work he’ll have to do in the Premier League.

It all came together in a perfect performance on Saturday. Ballard scored, snaffled DC points, scooped maximum bonus and kept a clean sheet to emerge from the Stadium of Light with a 17-pointer.

Such was his menace from set plays against the Hammers that he’s had more shots from the six-yard box (three) than any other Premier League player in Gameweek 1 so far.

SEELT INJURY GIVES ALDERETE A CHANCE

Poor Jensen Seelt (£4.0m) didn’t manage any of what Ballard did. Limping off after 53 minutes, he was marooned on one point as his side went on to bag a clean sheet.

Seelt was on borrowed time anyway, with new signing Omar Alderete (£4.0m) expected to replace him as the left-sided centre-half sooner rather than later. That came as soon as the second half of Gameweek 1.

Alderete even claimed an assist upon his introduction, whipping in a ball for Eliezer Mayenda (£5.5m) to nod in.

“I don’t think it’s really serious. He played well the first part of the game and after that Omar came in and he showed that now we probably have a bit more depth for our centre-backs. So it’s positive.” – Regis Le Bris on Jensen Seelt’s injury

With Burnley up next, there’s every chance that the Black Cats make it two clean sheets from two – that’d be as many as Ipswich Town managed in the whole of 2024/25!

Certainly, with their low block and combative midfield three in front of the defence, they look – at a very early glance – a darned sight more defensively competent than last year’s rabble.

“I think we showed today that the team worked well and the team was really hard to beat with a mid to low block.” – Regis Le Bris

GUIU UNUSED – AND FACING A BATTLE

Let’s get one thing straight before we begin: Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is, still, the best bet for minutes among £4.5m forwards in the medium term.

But the Chelsea loanee, like his owners in FPL, may have to be patient.

He was at least on the bench on Saturday, despite a limited pre-season.

But it was not just Mayenda who started but also Wilson Isidor (£5.5m) who came on ahead of Guiu against the Hammers, with £4.5m forward remaining unused.

To make things worse, Mayenda and Isidor both scored. Both goals should have been stopped, if we’re being party-poopers, with Mayenda’s header one of the slowest you’ll ever see and Isidor’s shot creeping under Mads Hermansen (£4.5m).

Regis Le Bris, however, remains a fan of both of Guiu’s positional rivals.

“Last season they showed how good they were and for me it was obvious that they have the quality because we’ll have strong opponents in front of us and we’ll have to defend as a team. They work well and they have this quality to attack the space in behind.” – Regis Le Bris on Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor

While Sunderland’s xG of 0.68 shows that there’s still a question mark over goalscoring, Habib Diarra (£5.5m) caught the eye from midfield with his bursts into the box. Wingers Simon Adingra (£5.5m) and Chemdsine Talbi (£5.0m) bagged assists, too.

HAMMER BLOW

Graham Potter is the new favourite in the sack race! So say the bookies off the back of this miserable loss.

It could have been different in the first half, with Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) looking lively and twice going close. As ever, he’s the one dragging the team up by their bootstraps.

El Hadji Malick Diouf (£4.5m) also exhibited his undoubted attacking threat, seeing his goalbound shot cleared at the last moment by the superb Ballard. Diouf had three shots in all, also creating two chances.

Above: Diouf was West Ham’s leading player for expected goal involvement (xGI) in Gameweek 1

After the break, though, nothing much of note. Chance creating was a problem under Potter at the back-end of last season and so it was again on Saturday, with the visitors mustering just 0.56 xG.

It was also an inglorious debut from Hermansen, preferred over Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) straight away, but we’ll maybe chalk it up to rustiness and nerves. His distribution was good and he also made a top stop from Diarra.

Not sure how I feel about this GW.

Took Reijnders out for Rutter last minute (Bad)
Had Verbruggan and DeCuyper on my bench ready to BB (Good)
Have No Salah (Bad considering he scored last kick of game)
    Have no Haaland (Bad)

    Palmer (c), lets go!

But if you have no Salah and no Haaland you probably have Ekitike and Gakpo so you're fine

I'm assuming you brought both in for Villa's good fixtures and Newcastle was never one of the good fixtures realistically, notwithstanding they have done well against them in the past

Yeah but Bournemouth top of the ticker now i believe and maybe Semenyo is just a better option anyway? Villa didn't play very well and had a low xg

yes true. However, I owned Semenyo a lot last season and he was frustrating to own at times. I'm trying to be a bit more patient this season but that doesn't always work

Yes. Fernandes still hasn't played and you probably picked your team with more than one gameweek in mind.

Do you not trust your own judgement?

If not you'll be doing -8 every week when someone you've not picked scores points.

Pkayers you don't own will get points. Those points are gone and buying those players now won't get them back
Next week other players you don't own will get points too
It's very FPL for those to be the same players you kneejerked out this week
Unless you think you have made a huge mistake patience can be a super power playing FPL

Planning to sell a player after GW1 is booking a transfer.

Since you can accumulate up to 5 free transfers it is like spending 4 points.

My aim is always to safe transfers for unexpected events like injuries, suspensions or real life transfer(begging of the season) or to rej jig the team when fixtures swing.

Each to their own I guess but in my opinion each transfer is worth 4 points.

A free transfer is a free transfer all it is doing is stopping me get another player instead.

If I did not take a hit all season then where it the -4 coming from?!

Many players don’t take a hit and I’ve been close and if I don’t have a hit for first 10 gameweeks, and I use a token or 2, I don’t think this free transfer will cost -4.

I remember people saying the same thing about Gordon not that long ago.
This may or may not be a thing. Wierd statistical anomalies happen which we then like to find explanations for - like Gakpo is Messi at home and not away.
Even if it was a thing last year, this year with no Diaz and the changes in Liverpool attack, who knows if it is a thing this year?

More broadly, you should play your way - if the plan all along was to sell Gakpo then do that, and if you wanted to jump on Bournemouth after a hard first fixture thats also fine.
I would not however just buy a replacement based on who got good points so far this week. Only you know if that is your decision making process or something more robust - after all Semenyo is a good pick, with a good run of fixtures and nailed in the side.

And 50% pass completion for Rogers. Haven't seen that game yet and I think it's fair assume he could have been underprepared given the injury and should improve, but it doesn't sound like there was really much to defend about that Villa performance

Yeah. If I owned Watkins then I’d be sorely tempted by Ekitike, yet he has Newcastle and Arsenal up next while Villa have Brentford and Palace.

Could be a few regrets there.

100%. Even if it goes wrong, its an easy transfer down Ekitike from Watkins and maybe Rogers to Reijnders. Those moves would easily cover any rate rise concerns..

He looked alright in pre-season and Burnley did have a lot of shots at Spurs.

Cullen too in midfield for winning the ball back etc

Triple City here (RAN, Reijnders, Haaland), but I've been a big fan of Oscar Bobb since last summer. He was really electric yesterday. Cherki is interesting too.

On 44 points with Sels, Murrilo, JP and Plamer still to play.

I also have Reijnders, Gakpo, and Salah.

Even still, I’m considering wildcarding to take advantage of some other cheap mids like Kudus, who are going to rack up the points.

This would free up the funds for Watkins > Haaland, and allow me to bring in one Arsenal asset for the Leeds fixture, which will be either Saka and Gyokeres (with some luck, we’ll get to find out who’s on pens today)

Thoughts? I’m concerned Haaland may continue to destroy my rank in the coming weeks, and an early WC could prevent this.

I’ve got off to a flyer. 64 pts with Palmer, Bruno, Milenkovic and Sels to go (so 72 pts all out). Reijnders and Rutter were my riskier picks.

You know your luck is in when even Konsa returned while also getting sent off.

Have Sunderland crushed BB, game week 2?

Or do you back Burnley to be more solid at home?

I think we have to wait and see if teams differ home and away. Wouldn’t be surprised if Burnley regroup for their first home game.

Due to Konsa being a muppet, I won’t bench boost now even though that was the plan. Will start Esteve. Burnley will know they need to win that game and park it up

Depending on who is on your bench, I would still play it to get it out the way assuming you have a playable bench (Dubravka, Esteve/Hartman etc).

Currently my bench is Sels, Milenkovic, Guiu and Diouf.

That's playing my Burnley players which I might reconsider.

Also think Chelsea beat West Ham convincingly and no idea if Guiu gets appearance points.

It's probably a swerve from me and I'll start Sels instead.

I was thinking more generally but some have lined up with Sunderland in their squads. Some BB to good effect this weekend.

I have been pretty confused by this seemingly prevalent idea of “getting a bench boost out the way”, that people don’t like it and it’s somehow stressful to have it sitting there.

I get that in gw1 you can set your team for it and slowly reallocate the cash into the starting 11. However do people think there won’t be a more obvious opportunity later on or that it could be used after afcon transfers etc?

Seems like throwing opportunity to away to “get rid of” a potential tool

              There's two this season

And also the bigger mini leagues I'm in are being led by bench boosters, especially if you chose a Sunderland player over Burnley so it's still useful for some.

I've never got more than 20 points from it. I even got negative points one season.

Got 18 this week and would have been on for 30 if Ballard doesn't clear Dioufs shot off the line and Verbruggen holds on for 30 more seconds.

Pretty happy with it tbh. Was the the players in my XI that let me down.

Pick two to play with Richards.

            A) Andersen - home to United
            B) Porro -away to City(Probably plays RWB)
            C) Esteve - home to Sunderland
            D) Murillo - away to Palace (have Sels)

            Cheers.

Cash does come out of that game as an option, are his minutes better this season?

Moreno seemed to be on his way out but I don't know tbf.
