Ever since Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) arrived in north London, armed with his impressive 89% scoring record from penalties, there has been some debate as to whether the striker would take over spot-kick duties from Bukayo Saka (£10.0m).

WHAT ARTETA PREVIOUSLY SAID

Mikel Arteta poured fuel on that fire in late July, saying:

“Well, I’m sure that he will step in if they allow him to do so, because as you say he’s been very consistent and he’s scored many goals, but we have some other penalty takers, really good ones as well. So, they will resolve it themselves and if not, I will intervene in the right moment!” – Mikel Arteta on Viktor Gyokeres’ ability from the penalty spot

SPORTBLADET CLAIM

This week, the usually reliable Sportbladet, which seemed to have the inside scoop on Gyokeres’ transfer to Arsenal to begin with, furthered the intrigue.

Within that paywalled article, the Swedish newspaper’s Daniel Kristoffersson claims Gyokeres has been “selected as penalty taker for the club for the upcoming season”.

ARTETA TO ESPN BRASIL ON HIS ‘BEST PENALTY TAKER’

The biggest clue yet though comes from a quickfire Q&A that Arteta did with ESPN Brasil, posted in the last few days.

The Arsenal boss was asked a series of questions, from best finisher (Saka) to best header (Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.0m)). One of them, possibly tellingly, was ‘best penalty taker’ – and Arteta answered with Gyokeres.

SAKA V GYOKERES V ODEGAARD: PENALTY TAKING RECORD

Pens takenPens scoredPen success rate
Gyokeres383489.5%
Saka161381.3%
Odegaard5480%

Gyokeres’ recent record is even better: he took a preposterous 20 in all competitions last season, scoring every single one.

Saka and Odegaard, by contrast, have both missed their most recent efforts from 12 yards.

WHO TOOK ARSENAL’S PENALTIES LAST SEASON?

Jorginho (UCL, Jan 29)ScoredOdegaard yes, Saka no
Sterling (UCL, Jan 29)MissedOdegaard yes, Saka no
Saka (UCL, Apr 16)MissedYes, both

We’ve rehashed the above table from our summer article, which was published before Gyokeres arrived.

Ostensibly, Saka was the first choice – but as has happened before, he let someone else muscle in on the action.

The England international and Martin Odegaard (£8.0m) scored Arsenal’s only two Premier League penalties of 2024/25. They came in the same game (v West Ham United in Gameweek 13) and each player scored with the other on the pitch!

WHAT IS SAKA’S RECORD LIKE WITHOUT PENALTIES?

SeasonStarts (sub apps)Goals scoredNon-pen goals scoredxGNon-pen xG
2024/2520 (5)656.856.06
2023/2435 (0)161015.5010.77

2020/2130 (2)556.906.90
2019/2019 (7)110.970.97

A lack of penalties wouldn’t have really harmed Saka that much last season, as he scored only one of them.

In his best-ever FPL season of 2023/24, he would have dropped from ninth in the xG standings to 20th without spot-kicks.

FPL-wise, having no penalties would have dropped him 30+ points with the goals/bonus lost – although he would have had one assist to his name instead, having won one of the six he converted.

Indeed, without pens, he wouldn’t have got above 200 points in FPL in any of his seasons.

FINAL THOUGHTS

FPL pre-season: Gyokeres’ instinct, Saka sharp, Kluivert + Christie latest 1

So, then, a potential boost for Gyokeres after his so-so debut against Manchester United.

Not only might he have penalties in his locker, but his main positional rival, Kai Havertz (£7.5m), is now out injured.

Until we see the ball on the spot, of course, it’s all rumour – even if it’s come from the mouth of Arteta. He’s been of the “the players decide on the pitch” school in the past, so even he might not have the final say.

Saka, meanwhile, is still a phenomenal player and a fine Fantasy pick – but being the only one of the five £10.0m assets without spot-kick duties (assuming Alexander Isak (£10.4m) stays at Newcastle United…!) does dent his appeal somewhat.

Only argument against it is you have Palace and City attack vs. Forest and Spurs defence. I've got Porro and Esteve too and if I don't Bench Boost this week I'll play Porro and bench Esteve. In any case you've got 15 likely starters.

It might be the best chance to BB with two 4m players if you don't want to spread the funds later on.

My bench this week is likely to be Petrovic, Strand Larsen (playing against each other), Esteve and Wan-Bissaka; planning on playing Porro and Kudus against City (only own Reijnders from City) and De Cuyper.

Think I'll hold off, try to accumulate free transfers and attack BB later.

Ya, if i can get at least 10-12 pts from bb i would be happy. Maybe is better to get rid of the bb early on so it doesnt affect my planning later on

Why waste the money on Trafford if you are playing dubravka? Just get another 4.0 gk and put funds in to starting 11. Could do lacroix up to another premium.

        Good Q

        Packed midfield they have.
Eze certainly does have the guile flair. PL experience and is at his peak age of 27. I would say has the skills sets to unlock defences where as most Arsenal mids are more holding defence who don't always find the attackers centrally

More of an advance mid attacker that should help Arsenal alot

Not so much to start, but when you get towards the end of the season and using the last wildcard or free hit, it's better if you have 105 million to spend rather than 100 million.

Feel my aggressive WC on the back of a great week 1 is forming its final shape now, interested in feedback. My plan is to BB in week 3. and have 2FTS to react to week 4 after the 2 weeks IB.

I am basing this on the following :
    - I want Arsenal longterm, will rotate Gabriel for bad fixtures out (Liverpool, New),
    - Palmers data in his current position are dire under maresca, unless we get news on Friday pre deadline that he is back on the right side / or Gusto is right back i wont have him
    - Gakpo and Ekitike being 16mil total given the mess of the Isak decision is any easy gamble, they will play until at least week 4 and i can reassess, Salah will of course be great but Haaland is perma captain for most weeks so Salah money can be distributed.
    - Ait Nouri i dont like longterm, would probably get Gvardiol or VVD week 4ish .
    - Cucurella is massively overlooked
    - I want to go one week early on the template move of a United mid for week 3.

    Team

Obviously the team would be informative:

      Team :

      Dubravka
      Gabriel Cucu Ait Nouri
      Gakpo Cunha Reindeer Semenyo
      Haaland Gyok (c) Ekiteke

Sels Neco Williams Dorgu Van der Ven.

I would really like to take a punt on Esteveao if he starts Friday night, but cant find the space.

I like it, but it's not too far off my free hit team... which makes me wonder if it's long sighted enough. Or maybe I'm better off WCing now instead of using the FH...

Personally I wouldn't take the punt on Estaveao though.

Cheers,Ya i will wait almost certainly on Estevaeo

I almost did FH but then did a few weeks of the team i wanted and realised i could do a WC now and carry it all the way through. I started great so trying to build value and jump on the players who could offer longterm value.

          2: WC
          3: BB
4: 2FTS : The aggressive play is changing Cunha (city + chelsea) & Haaland (united + Arsenal) > Salah (BUR Eve) + Watkins ( eve Sunderland and Burnley to come)
6: Plan to get Haaland back in 6 for someone and then for Burnley and triple captain .
Am also open to get Isak eventually sometime around here.

Whats your current team without FH look like?
Im dumping Porro, Bruno, Palmer , Richardilson (did his perfect week 1 return and a great fpl memory now but his xmins wont be great)

I built a bench boost team fow gw1 with a plan to wc early, so its not great, 3 spurs, 3 pool, but do have 3 city which is good. But im thinking of FH this week instead, as the team looks OK for GW3 and then I can WC in 4 most likely.

Yes on your team it makes sense i think to hold the WC and go FH.

I had this below so WC is my best option (always left the choice open if Haaland and City looked good) and i always like an aggressive start, especially with all the chips now

              Week 1 team was this:
              Sels
              Porro Cucu Ait-Nouri Frimpong
              Bruno Reindeer Wirtz Salah (c)

Commented before seeing your team but really like it, gone very similar on my WC.
Obviously Gakpo(if Isak joins), Cucu(Hato), Ait-Nouri & Reijnders(Peptation) could all be benched now and then but you’ve got good cover …just hope you don’t mind the odd benching headache or seeing your bench score big! Looks like you’ve got 6 defenders though…who’s the 5th mid?

Just posted below and it seems we’re thinking nearly identical thoughts!
1st point on Gabriel …I was planning on having a strong defence to cover him for those matches but now I’m thinking that with DEFCON, aren’t players more likely to get points against teams that attack them? Granted it’s a max 2pts but there’s still a chance of a CS too! From experience it’s a horrible feeling bringing in a player to cover based on fixtures and then seeing who you’re covering have a blinder …as such I think I’m leaning towards letting him play those fixtures and upgrading my mid cover where there’s more chance of no-shows

Agree on Palmer, he wasn’t great for me last year and his open play goals this last year aren’t impressive either from what I’ve read

Had both but currently sticking with Ekitike as I think from Slots comments he’ll be pretty nailed whether Isak comes or not. Still don’t think Salah will hit the same heights as last year myself

Agree again. Had Ait-Nori but swapped to Cucu and will probably swap to Gvardiol when he’s back as he was 1st choice for me before injury.

Think Man U have some good FPL options this year but it’s a wait and see for me on them still atm

      Sorry long reply

        Nice!

On Gabriel, he is one of those players Im fine to bench as he wont get much DC. So my plan currently is to bench him only week 3 as part of BB and for NEW away (playing VDV home to Wolves)

He will probably play every other game for me rest of the Season there after

Need some help please guys …Haaland probably rising tonight so got some decisions to make!
On a planned WC …dropping Palmer to bring in Haaland…right decision?

    Sels/Dubravraka
    Gabriel/Cucu/Murillo/Gudmundsson/Reineldo
    Saka/Semenyo/Kudus/Reijnders/Stach
    Gyokeres/Ekitike/Haaland

Always planned to have Aina & Lacroix to swap round and cover for Gabriel/Cucu’s bad fixtures but now I’m thinking that DEFCON is gonna be higher against the harder teams as defending more, so am I better off going Murillo and just playing him and the other 2 every week?
That allows me to get Stach in to cover Reijnders if benched, which is inevitable at some stage.

    So, in short….
1 - Aina/Lacroix/Gudmundsson/King - 4 good defenders to swap about and cover but no/poor cover for midfield
    2 - Murillo/Gudmundsson/Reineldo/Stach - set and forget defence + cover for Reijnders

    Cheers

2 for me. Like the thinking and Stach being overlooked - Perfect 5m cover

Cheers Bobarella yeah I’m leaning to 2 myself and like the look of Stach …think he could be good route into extra ££’s too

On paper Ollie Watkins may have better next 3 fixtures compared to Haaland.

Due to price rise of Haaland which i presume is with very early WC. Is it really worth swapping Watkins for Haaland just because of the
    £0.1m ?

Price rise Vs taking a -4 hit

it is absolutely not worth chasing a rise this early in the season

Price changes used to pretty much dictate my transfers until one day I realised that not being able to afford a player I wanted usually resulted in me either getting a cheaper one or holding on to the player I wanted to ditch and who invariably got more points than the one I didn't have the cash for anyway.

If Palmer playing last week he'll be leaving my team very soon. One I almost went without for GW1. Just went Wood instead of Pedro

If Eze comes in and nails down a place on the LW for Arsenal, surely he's an absolute bargain at £7.5m?!

If Arteta doesnt task him to play like a Pep winger like Martinelli.

Is it crazy to capp Jokers with Salah, Palmer, Pedro and Reindeers in my team?

Not crazy at all. Arsenal have the best fixture. Joker looked a bit lost against United though.

He is my planned captain despite Haaland, Gakpo , Ekitike , Reindeers , Semenyo, Cunha in my team.

Hi all, question for my draft game. Malen out for…

    A. O Riley
    B. Minted
    C. Ndoye
    D. H Wilson

If you could order them that would be very helpful as well!!

I would wait and see if Malen plays next game. I'm annoyed he didn't start vs Newcastle as we looked way better when he finally subbed on

Decided to sell bowen I think. Who do you prefer?

    A) evanilson
    B) mateta
    C) strand larsen
    D) sesko

I’d probably go with evanilson myself …would’ve been Mateta by a distance but they’ve just lost Eze so might not be as good in attack
