With Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) just a day away, we’re getting some top insight from our team of pundits and Hall of Famers.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser discusses why FPL managers should maybe wait before rushing headlong to buy Erling Haaland (£14.0m). You can get his Gameweek 2 team reveal here.

Don’t forget to sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Lateriser triple Forest

The first week of FPL is on the tape, and as usual, we’re questioning a flurry of things and trying to gauge the Meta. Should we jump the gun or should we show some more patience? That is pretty much the thought on the mind of every Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager and the answer is a rather subjective and contextualised grey. Apologies if you were in the market for a black or white.

HAALAND: GIVE IT ANOTHER WEEK?

FPL notes: Pep on Marmoush's "impact" + Haaland's fitness

So, the big talking point is obviously Erling Haaland (£14.0m) and how good and rejuvenated both he and Manchester City look. This was something most of us were expecting anyway but to put things into context, Wolverhampton Wanderers did play into their hand a bit with a block not so deep.

I am expecting a very different kind of game against the pragmatic Tottenham Hotspur (how much can change in a year…) managed by Thomas Frank. Watching that game will tell us how quickly we need to jump on Haaland but it is worth noting that he will have testing ties against Manchester United (says he, optimistically) and Arsenal in Gameweeks 4 and 5 which might allow us the luxury of time to assess the landscape.

A lot of FPL managers have already come to the conclusion that Mohamed Salah (£14.0m) + Haaland might be the way to go this season (which well might be the case) but there’s a lot to learn. If a certain striker moves to Liverpool, how does that affect goal share for one of the most attacking teams in the country? How do the two Peps’ team (the new Pep has a lot to do with a faster, more direct City) perform against a deep block?

The main (boring) advice that I have for FPL managers is: be a sponge. There might well be a case where Haaland braces against Spurs and we might say enough is enough. In that scenario, sure, push those buttons.

THE £5.5M QUESTION – AND OTHER CAVEATS

Best £5.5m+ defenders for FPL 2025/26 4

Many people will be looking at something along the lines of Cole Palmer (£10.5m) + Ollie Watkins (£9.0m)/Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) striker to Haaland + Elliot Anderson (£5.5m)/Tijjani Reijnders (£5.6m), which are perfectly good moves.

If it is a worst-case scenario this weekend for Haaland non-owners, I don’t mind people getting trigger-happy with their transfers. I do want to urge some caution, though.

The £5.0m-£6.0m midfield bracket doesn’t look heavy with options. So, if you have a midfield with two £5.5m-ish picks and they don’t seem to perform for 2-3 weeks in a row, you might find yourself cornered into a position which might be difficult to get out of.

If you’re someone who jumps the gun into an early Wildcard to get both Haaland and Salah, the pressure to get the other 13 picks right (at pretty modest prices) is very high. One Gameweek is not enough to take clear, well-thought-out shots. They are very much half-baked shots in the dark. Are we confident which £7.0m striker is best? Do we know which £9.0m-£10.0m premium is best? Are we certain which defender has genuinely emerged as a defensive contribution (DC/DefCon) monster?

We will take time to assess these things and have more proof in the pudding. I just feel that the downside of getting 4-5 of these things wrong on an early Wildcard might well put you in a rather, messy, ummm…pudding?

MORE TWISTS AND TURNS IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW

FPL notes: Isak + Trippier injury updates,

One of the biggest elephants in the room is the fact that the transfer window is still open and the domino effect of some of the transfers still pending is quite substantial. I mean, we don’t even know who the striker at Newcastle United is going to be – and that is a pretty big piece of information to get. So basically, calm down and be a sponge (says he before a knee-jerky minus four in Gameweek 2).

But I say this because I realised last season that transfers spent in tranches of three and four are much more potent than one or two transfers used together.

The opening Gameweeks can be an exception, so long as you are confident of the information behind your decisions. No matter which way you look at it, though, transfers stacked up for three to four weeks will always put you in a position of strength, even though you’re acting maybe 2-3 Gameweeks late. At the very least, you’re less likely to be wrong, which you could be if you move now or next week, for example.

As an innately aggressive, pro-active FPL manager, this is something I am working hard to wrap my head around and is the constant dialogue I am having with myself because I truly believe there is value in accumulating transfers. It can’t be a hard-and-fast rule; it has to just be an intent. At the weekend, if you feel like you’ve seen enough, press those buttons and unleash the chaos. Until then, be the best sponge you can be.

What would people do here? team looks pretty fine to roll? Opting for Dubravka and Gudmonsson Over Sels and Diouf just purely based on the fixtures/not having players playing against each other.

    Dubravka
    Gudmondsson - Munoz - RAN
    Sarr - Wirtz - Bruno - Palmer - Reijnders
    Haaland - Bowen

    Sels - Diouf - VDV - Guiu

I'd have Bowen out for JSL, Watkins, Evanilson, Gyok etc - depending on what funds you have. WHU really failed the eye test for me.

      Inb4 Bowen brace

Forget last season, I would get rid of Frimpong and go for Saliba or Gabriel, double up if you can. 3 Chelsea is already too much, they’re not that good a side imo.

      Gab, Saliba, Munoz, VVD, Ait-Nouri

My pick of the bunch, depending on FH/WC plan and team structure, is VVD or Ait-Nouri

Cucu out of those 3 - but you need to do some research to at least understand the game. Read the articles posted here if you don't already. Cucu is a premium, 6m defender with clean sheet potential and possibility of attacking returns, whilst having the best upcoming fixtures. He is incomparable to Dogu (assume Dorgu) and Ballard and by far the best choice. (when price is not considered, which in your question, it is not)

Great insight! I do read the comments and articles but don't have a chance to watch games except for their highlights. The 3 defenders above i feel are strong becuase they all provide attacking potential for their teams. The only thing I don't really bet on is clean sheets, especially after last season when it was challenging finding CS around.

On their attacking abilities, so dorgu go up multiple points and against a team like arsenal. For ballard, he was the main man for all their aerial balls and i think a team like Sunderland will continue swinging them in as their main attacking option. Cucu is solid as well and was box to box with unlimited stamina. As such, even if money is not a concern, I thought these 3 are comparable. Educate me if I'm pls!

Dorgu hit the post against Arsenal and it was a good long range shot, would've been a goal if it was a few inches further inside. Dorgu gets up there and is involved a reasonable amount when the ball is on his side or when the circumstances permit. I'd say Cucu is more often a present part of the Chelsea attack force.

I did not mean to sound pedantic or rude when I said educate yourself, but you really do have to. If you don't get time for the games, Match of the Day is a great start. IF you don't have time to educate yourself on football, educate yourself on FPL, Youtube/Podcasts/Blogs are a great place.

No offense taken at all! I know that I know little about the game hence I reach out to the community for advice, and I always do get solid info like yourself. Looks like a toss up between Cucu and Dorgu for me. I noticed you didn't mention anything about Ballard? Is it a case of 1 game wonder and to not jump on the hype train? Admittedly I do not know how they played in the championship and if Ballard was such a key man upfront all the time.

Cucu is who you pick out of these 3.

If you like the idea of picking Ballard or Dorgu, I'd so in addition to Cucu and at the expense of another defender in your squad (not for -4 points, so in a future week or if you're on a wildcard or freehit).

I simply don't know enough about Ballard, but I am not paying 4.6m for a promoted club defender that have active 4.0m players based on GW1 alone. Yes I could eat my words, but I'd say that's a 10% chance compared to the 90% chance that he just had a great week. (again, important to stress, not as a player, but in terms of returning FPL points)

Thanks for the reminder, you're right that this is a game of probabilities and Cucu ranks the highest among these "newer" players. Thanks again for taking the time and good luck for the rest of the season!

I disagree. I was on Haaland (c) for a while myself, but switched to Saka (c). I think sometimes it's easy to over complicate things. Saka at home to Leeds - surely that's a captain choice without hesitation?

      1. Sir Michael Taker
        • 11 Years

The points scoring lends itself better to midfield captaincy options over pen taking strikers who dont assist very often. So many more avenues for Saka, Palmer, Salah than for Robot who needs to brace to do well. Partly why I didnt pick him, not sure any striker is worth 14m

      2. Count of Monte Hristo
        • 12 Years

Saka was my pre planned captain when picking my squad weeks ago. Just this annoying news regarding penalties for Gyokeres dents the appeal of Saka and lately the opposition seems to double up on Saka on that side and it seems easier to keep Saka quiet whereas before it seemed like he was untouchable.

        1. 112kane112
          • 7 Years

I do find (with absolutely no evidence other than me feeling) that Arsenal play Saka out wider against medium/tough opposition, hugging the touchline, but against weaker teams they "unleash" him a bit more in the final third. Gyok might not play 90 so hope the penalty comes late haha! In seriousness, the penalty situation is only assumed, not proven. Jimmy B also raises a good point. I guess the final summary: Haaland is almost a banker for something, Saka has higher ceiling

            • 12 Years

I hope you’re correct in your thinking that he has more freedom to play against weaker opposition and used less tactically like he is in the big games. He does have the higher ceiling for this fixture. Think I will switch back to him and roll the dice.

I will be getting rid of him as soon as possible. I do believe he will pick up points, mind you, he was not invisible at the weekend, if you watch the game. But I do not believe he will pick them up enough compared to the value of his cost. Gutting when you miss him bang a hatrick - but if you have to wait for it every 5-6 weeks, what's the point

The crazy thing is, you sometimes see players used in a way that's better for the teams success but worse for their individual performance or FPL points - but in this case it also seems Chelsea are so much worse as a consequence of the way they are using Palmer.

Anyone using triple captain on Saka/Gyokeres?

I think I might activate it on the big Swede. No Havertz, 90 mins, apparently on pens, Leeds might high press which would open up space up front.

Haaland and Salah will have UCL games later on and might not get full 90 in their easy games.

      Watkins - Pedro

      A) Watkins or Salah for Captain?
      B) Bench Porro or Munoz?
      C) Is this even worth a Bench Boost to get it out the way?

Appreciate any helps gents! Thanks you!

If we hear Guiu has a chance of playing BB, I hate that chip.

        Why BB? Crazy.

Munoz over Porro or even Esteve

Simply to get it out the way bud, plus Dubravka and Guiu having favourable fixtures, but only if Guiu actually played I guess.

Cheers, I’m in favour of playing Munoz more 😉

Will Eze be a good FPL option in time once he settles at Arsenal? Is he naturally good at LW if he takes Martinelli’s spot? Just wonder when/if he gets the chance to play at 10?

Eze doesn’t play left wing so it’s the perfect match 😉

B - palmer to semyedo + Bowen to Watkins -4
      C - Bowen to Watkins - 0

Any insights as to why? A lot of people captaining semenyo, palmer been weak, Bowen been weak. Utd have easy fixture and have one next GW. Watkins has easy fixture?

      Best move here?

      A) Frimpong -> Gabriel using FT, Neco bench

      B) Start Neco, bench Frimpong, roll FT

I would sell Frimpong now, he will lose value and the injury will probably drag on. I'm not going to Gabriel, they play Liverpool, City and Newcastle in the next 5. I'm between RAN, Cucurella, Munoz and Tarkowski at the moment.

You need to sell him really now - not ideal to have to use a FT but Gabrial a decent shout - get's you 6 points at least GW2 and possibly more

Definitely agree with this sentiment. I’ve had a habit of overreacting and playing my WC very early the last 2-3 years including GW2 last season. I ended up painting myself into a corner with limited info both times and it took me ages to catch up.

Saka scored 5 goals from open play in 20 pl starts last year, Ars attack very lack luster vs Utd...Leeds were decent. Not sure there's a goal fest here

Suppose if they score early then Leeds have to come out it could be 3-0, 3-1 something like that. Even 4 maybe.

If Leeds get past 25 mins without conceding it could be a long afternoon for Arsenal maybe.

      Guys just made an absolute stinker and accidentally transferred Watkinds > Evanilson instead of Bowen.. Leaving me with;

      Sels
      De Cuyper Cucu Esteve
      Salah(c) Wirtz Palmer Rogers Reijnders
      Bowen Evanilson

      VDV AWB Guiu

Someone please talk some sense in to me and tell me what I should now do...

Rectify it and bring in Watkins for Bowen and just suck up the -4 and accept I'm an absolute fool.. Or be a silly billy and use a chip lol

I blame the colour of the kit for the confusion!

Anything desperately need doing with this? Not hugely happy with it but also feels like an unpredictable GW so would prefer to save a FT

      Dubravka
      Porro Murillo Anderson
      Salah Gakpo Rogers Reijnders Bruno
      JP Watkins

Sels Diouf Giuiu Rodon (2.5 ITB)

3 decisions outstanding on WC, the risks seem too good to pass up at those prices if they come off…

      Sánchez (Dúbravka)
      5.5 | 5.0 | Ballard (Gudmundsson | 4.0)
      Salah Semenyo Kudus Reijnders (King)
      Haaland Ekitiké Wood

      Calafiori Lewis Acheampong

Expect Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori will share the LB role (if anything I thought it'd be more MLS than Calafiori). Lewis is a bit risky too but maybe ok to punt on him if the rest are nailed. Acheampong is also deadwood with Tosin back (would suggest a Sunderland defender there if not for Ballard).

            At 5.5 I'd have Milenkovic/Muñoz personally

I'd go Sarr over Kudus - he will need to step up even more with Eze gone. 5.5 - Munoz/Tark/Milenkovic and 5 - Larcroix/Aina
