With Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) nearing, our pundits are starting to finalise their teams ahead of Friday’s deadline.

FPL General – who has three top 500 finishes to his name – is fully committed to going without Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Erling Haaland (£14.0m) this season. He shares his Gameweek 2 team thoughts here…

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

General no Salah Haaland

It was so good to have the Premier League back on television last weekend. I can’t wait for more of it in Gameweek 2!

With it, of course, comes the wonderful game of FPL. I’ve been playing it since its inception way back in 2002/03, as a 12-year-old. I really should retire soon!

Going into this season without Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Erling Haaland (£14.0m) has given me the renewed enthusiasm for the game that I was looking for. Despite both players getting attacking returns (Salah owners were very lucky!), and my captain, Cole Palmer (£10.5m), blanking (yet again), I really enjoyed following the action over the weekend and the reactions of FPL managers to every kick of the ball on social media. It’s such a great form of escapism when played with the right mentality. Hopefully, the big two have a quieter weekend this time around.

I've got Malen in my team. He has dropped to 5.4. Only reasonable thing most be roll and play one of
    A) Esteve
    B) Marc Guiu

    agree?

    Team is
    Sanchez
    Virgil - Murillo - Dorgu
    Salah - Palmer - Rutter - Bruno - **Malen
    Pedro - Watkins

Dubravka - Estevé - Guiu - Van de Ven

Of course Estève, and it's not even remotely close. You'd be happy to get 1 point with Guiu

I am going with Palmer. Better fixture, Chelsea will want to bounce back etc Salah obviously a huge shout but the game will be difficult and hostile.

Palmer will drop in price after this weekend. Everyone will scramble to get Haaland.

Him and Watkins to drop 0.1 each by week 3

If he's poor for 70 mins like last time and they need goals I reckon he will get pulled early again. Even with Havertz out. Much better chance of a big score than last game still ofc

I have him, but I won't after what I saw in the first game. Will have to show a much better performance for him to get an armband from me in the future.

I think he is a viable captain, on pens, will get close to 80min at least, leeds are still a newly promoted team having just come up (Everton is not a good gauge of their level) and just lost their captain who is their key defensive midfielder. He has also been a flat track bully so worth a punt i feel.

I have a feeling he will do a week 2 Pukki (hatrick) and explode and cause chaos on here.

        1. ZeBestee
          • 11 Years

Yeah he has the pedigree to score goals, but those touches and passes were just not good enough at this level. Obviously its early on and we can't judge him now but I will rather go with Salah/Haaland or even Palmer/Watkins as proven assets.

I mean he has scored goals at all levels, he scored a hatrick against city some months ago in CL. He is 100% ok for this level.

I think it's a decent shout if you have him
IMO Arsenal will be doing as much as possible to get him to score (if he blanks this week it can quickly start being seen as a problem and head goes down etc. given tougher fixtures)
      On pens
Leeds I don't think we can read too much from the Everton game, it was one of the worst attacking performances I've seen from a club in recent years that game

No. Unless you are ready to take a huge risk then do it. He was absolutely mid in that first game, and I am an Arsenal fan. Expecting a much better performance going forward but I am still not 100% convinced with him if am honest. Maybe Eze will unlock him but will still have to show that he can do better than what he did in that first game.

The experience of users on this site would be improved by a forum. You could shift all the RMT posts into one advice thread, then have discussions on other topics in other threads.

I think interactions would be a lot more civil as well.

I suppose the more comments on an article the better for clicks, though. But it’s been calling out for a better way for about a decade.

Forums are a dead communication form unfortunately. This comment section is also dying, the change from 3-4 years back is massive. When's the last time you saw a community member contribute anything interesting? It's hardly a community any more.

As someone who was here back in 2007 i would say even 5 years ago was way different that the early days.

Site seemed way more active with a core of regulars interacting on most days and discussing tactics, template etc, much less RMT. But alas that is a general internet trend.

I recall in those days the servers going down multple times when traffic peaked if there was a hot debate - Mark used to mail some of us occasionally to give updates and even acted as a mediator to help sort heated debates and fallouts. Many of the big content creators who went full time were part of the original core , i recall the first times Andy (TFPL) was on here and chatting alot with him.

Those days feel along time ago.

2007? Pretty sure this website was just in the mind of Mark Sutherns at that time.

I would of guessed this website began in some form in 2009.

Maybe im off by a year and it was late 2008, i do recall it was that period based on being in Uni at the time and coming on here everytime Kuyt killed me in my mini league.

I was 100% a regular in 2009 as i recall long discussions on whether going away from the meta (very cheap 4.5 mil defence) was worth it for Glen Johnson and if Michael Carrick (lol) was an fpl goldmine due to possible being on United pens.

Yea absolutely. 8-10 years ago was a ton better, but 4 years ago there were still plenty of community members posting analysis worthy of being a hot topic frequently. I was doing so myself and it felt like contributions were appreciated and you felt like you gave some and got some back from the community. Nowadays theres literally at most 5% of the community feeling, most posters are just people posting RMT and then f cking off until next GW deadline.

You are correct, this place is not functional as a community at all because of the layout

And things that might generate community interaction beyond A or B or RMT, like mini-league updates or career HoF or H2H leagues, are given such low priority.

I'm hoping that my Mini-leagues and Community Competitions article will be published later today.
I submitted it on Tuesday, but they may have been waiting for additional news on the Halls of Fame and H2H Leagues, which was expected on Thursday, before publishing it.

It was because I thought that news of the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league leaders and Hall of Fame leaders was being neglected that I started supplying information about them to Jonty for his weekly round-ups and then started these Community articles in collaboration with TopMarx, which have since expanded to cover far more mini-leagues than they originally did.

The discussions were far less dominated by RMTs etc in the early days when FFS was a well-kept secret known only to a minority of FPL players
And there used to be better discussions between community members before we brought in the Pro Pundits.

Feels like 2025 is when the Social Internet dies - AI Slop taking over in general (e.g. Pinterest has been killed off), FPL site 'design' abandoning basic principles, FFS bombarding us with headache-inducing pop-up offers on every tab opened, people heading off to private discussion areas, individuals posting 50 questions per week relentlessly on FFS. I'm not on social media but that also seems to have abandoned reality for tribalism.

Basically what's left of the Internet is a streaming service. And Wikipedia.

FFS did try having separate threads for RMTs and A or B posts once, but many of the casual users just kept posting their RMT requests on the main articles anyway and not replying to the ones in the thread, so it didn't really work out very well.

Morning all, anymore early WC around? 73 last week and really wanted Haaland. Like this Salah + Haaland draft

This is my draft so far. Freehitting in week 3 to target United and avoid the huge amount of players that clash in my team (Arse v Liv and Spurs v Bou)

    Petrovic
    Cucurella Gabriel Esteve Andersen
    Salah Semenyo Reindeer, Anderson
    Gyokeres (c) Haaland
    Dub, Kudus, Gudmonson, Guiu

Will probably get Ekitike in week 4 for gyokeres but open to any forward who could be viable after the transfer window

    Any other WC out there?

    1. _Greg
      • 15 Years
      3 months, 16 days ago

I regret not bench boosting and locking in a WC2 for sure.

BB, WC, FH in a row seems so obvious now 🙂

I think Gyokeres is a risk. But fair enough Ekitike in at that point could be perfect if Isak stays.

Keeping a slot open for Eze potentially is good.

I think you'd be better off with King instead of Kudus and Strand Larsen instead of Guiu.

Yes Strand Larsen i really like

Just read loads of reports he may be off to Newcastle so unsure how to read into it.

But yes I can see the benefits of your thinking. Also gives me a better BB option in future ( havent used it yet).

I have Petrovic, Cucu, Gabriel, Anderson (Ful) and gyokeres as differences

I’m in the same boat with VDV or Esteve…
I have Haaland (c) so a VDV clean sheet is inevitable. 🙂
I think I’ll just play the percentages

Yeah so past years I would have kept Esteve, for potential clean sheet. But even though Spurs will let in goals VDV might now have points based on defensive contributions. So I don’t know who out of the two will get more points.

I went for Esteve with this fixture in mind. I think I just stick with the plan and then Esteve can continue warming up my bench. GL

What would you say is the best players from 4.5-5 mill defenders to get?

Richards is good. Got rested in yesterday's ECL game.
Truffert a fun pick, like Kerkez.
Dorgu gets into the box a lot, Burnley next GW too.

Have you ever taken a hit for a defender, banked on the person you took out losing a clean sheet and the one coming in definitely getting one to result in a no gain but free transfer of sorts?

Currently weighing this up with the Arsenal defence. I know I want them long term, but are Burnley (Dubravka) or Sunderland (Reinildo) definitely conceding and are Arsenal definitely keeping a clean sheet?

    Thoughts and opinions please.

Loads of times. But for those options its a hard one as they could keep a clean

Yes, only if they are injured (long term replacement will outscore the injured defender) and BGW

I would say taking a hit for an Arsenal defender with Liverpool, Forest and City after Leeds is probably a bad idea.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Leeds nick a consolation either - Arsenal looked shaky af last week and should have conceded a pen at least.

You're probably right Jim, just I know those Arsenal b*stards will probably keep clean sheets even in those tough fixtures.

I think Liverpool and City score, but that Forest fixture is probably a cleany too, yeah. I'm interested to see how they line up with Eze in the team, so I'm happy to hold off on Arsenal til about October

Nuno Espirito Santo is apparently in the hot seat. Just before Forest face Palace, the team they replaced in the EL.

    Munoz anyone?

Maresca hints at rotation between Pedro - Delap depending on the game plan :

“Joao probably in the small space gives us more than Liam. Liam probably gives us a bit more in terms of physicality and runs in behind. It depends on the game plan we have”

I can see them both starting at some point.
I’ve never really seen Pedro as a number 9 and I reckon the two of them playing together would complement each other nicely.

        Delap
        Neto - Pedro - Palmer

That's their best attack to me. Agree that Pedro is not an out-and-out 9, and Gittens looked absolutely woeful last week.

I'm a Brighton fan and saw a lot of Pedro, he was better as a 10 for us. Delap's movement is far better as it should be as he is a proper number 9.

It just makes sense and Palmer seems to play best when he’s drifting in from the right too.

    1) Bench Kudus or Wirtz
    2) Bench Reinildo or Williams (Playing Murillo)
    3) Captain Palmer or Watkins

FH2, what we reckon folks? Burnley and Sunderland 4m defenders enables strong front six as there aren’t any other defenders that ‘scare’ me:

    Petrovic
    Gabriel • Lacroix • Esteve • Reinaldo
    Palmer • Saka (c) • Semenyo
    Watkins • Haaland • Gyokeres

    Starting fodder bench

Drop Palmer to Rogers/Cunha and upgrade defence imo.

I think there's a bit more value in either double Sunderland defence or double Burnley, instead of one of each, if you're leaning either way

I now suddenly as the deadline approaches I am tempted by a different WC draft. All have potential to be tailsman. Dubravka would be short term when downgrading probably Ait-Nouri

    Dubravka
    Cucurella Ait-Nouri Gabriel
    Cunha Salah Semenyo Reindeers
    Haaland (c) Strand-Larsen, Thiago.

    4mil King Gudmon Reineldo

    Wirtz to Semenyo
    Or
    Mitoma to Roger’s

    For an ft

Or save and Mitoma to Kudus/Johnson next week

Or save and Wirtz and Mitoma to Mbuemo and Gordon next week
