Jack Grealish (£6.5m) provided the inspiration as Everton beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on Sunday.

We pick out the key takeaways from this match in our next Gameweek 2 Scout Notes piece.

GREALISH SHINES

Jack Grealish was front and centre of Everton’s 2-0 win over Brighton.

The playmaker provided two assists to earn a share of the bonus and 11 points.

He nearly added a third assist, too, only for substitute Dwight McNeil (£5.9m) to miscue his shot from 10 yards out.

Grealish’s impressive performance included three chances created.

He also demonstrated his commitment to Everton’s defensive cause, with 11 defensive contributions (DefCons).

“I felt really good. It was nice. I don’t want to get into like saying I didn’t feel free before, but out there today I could drift, I could do what I want more or less and play with a bit of freedom. Take more risks. I feel like I have done that.” – Jack Grealish

With No 10 Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) frequently drifting to the left to connect with Grealish, 66.7% of the chances created by Everton on Sunday originated from that side of the pitch, compared to just 11.1% on the right.

Above: Everton’s average position map v Brighton, inc Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (22) and Jack Grealish (18)

IS NDIAYE INJURED?

Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) was the first scorer at Everton’s new stadium, tapping home Grealish’s low cross.

However, despite a lively display, he was unexpectedly hooked on 63 minutes.

The BBC live commentary (see below) and Liverpool Echo have both suggested he was injured, but we’ve not yet heard anything from the player himself or David Moyes to corroborate that.

We’ll hopefully get an update when Moyes faces the media before Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie against Mansfield Town.

James Garner (£5.0m) powered home the second for Everton.

Elsewhere, Thierno Barry (£6.0m) was preferred to Beto (£5.5m) up top.

Although he didn’t have much joy in front of goal, notably heading a chance over from a Dewsbury-Hall corner, he held the ball up well and likely did enough to secure another start at Molineux next week.

BRIGHTON RUE MISSED CHANCES/WELBECK PEN

Everton were lucky to keep their clean sheet intact on Sunday.

Kaoru Mitoma (£6.5m) and Jan Paul van Hecke (£4.5m) both struck the woodwork.

Danny Welbeck (£6.4m) also had a penalty saved by Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), notably when Matt O’Riley (£5.5m) was on the pitch, as Brighton created 2.36 expected goals (xG).

Welbeck had an earlier opportunity, too, which he scooped over the bar from six yards out. The xG figure on that chance was 0.77.

It was supplied by Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m), who caused plenty of problems for Everton’s makeshift left-back Garner.

Indeed, his searing pace helped create four chances for his teammates at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the most of any player. He also racked up 13 penalty box touches, another match-high.

On the DefCon front, Mats Wieffer (£5.0m), James Tarkowski (£5.5m), Michael Keane (£4.5m) and Garner all picked up extra points for their defensive efforts.

Tarkowski is now one of just five defenders to earn DefCon points in each of the first two Gameweeks.

RUTTER INJURY LATEST

Welbeck made his return to Brighton’s starting XI in Gameweek 2, with Georginio Rutter (£6.0m) unexpectedly absent.

Fabian Hurzeler later revealed the Frenchman had picked up a small issue on the eve of the match.

“He had a small issue in training and unfortunately then we had to make the decision. It is only a small issue and he should be back soon.” – Fabian Hurzeler on Georginio Rutter

Carlos Baleba (£5.0m), meanwhile, was withdrawn at half-time for tactical reasons, having suffered a poor opening 45 minutes.

As for Rutter, it sounds like he’ll be back soon, although it is worth noting Brighton are about to embark on a tough run of fixtures right through until the end of October.

    Evening all...

Looking to replace Palmer, who would you go with from the following:

    Semenyo, Kudus, Grealish, Bruno, Cunha?

    1. Drop Dead Tsimikas

Grealish, of those. Tempted myself to go Palmer + Saka > Grealish + Eze, but might do it in installments. Saka looks to be #1 priority at the moment.

Hmm, intereresting. I get the feeling Cunha could do a mad one against Burnley but United aren't exactly convincing rn.

Eze might even be a shout now Saka and Odegaard are injured.

Evening all, worst start to an FPL in forever. Few injuries and loads of bad picks. 21 point week with 2 to play WC rage active. New team is as follows: any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Vicario / Dubravka

    Porro / Munoz / Dorgu / Truffert / Gudmonsson

    Mbuemo / Kudus / Gordon / Elanga / Reijnders

    Haaland / Ekitike / JPedro

2.5m ITB to do Ekitike to Isak if that move happens and when settled and also money spare to move Elanga to Eze again when settled as realise I’ve gone mega early on a WC2 and want Arsenal from 6 onwards

How to improve this FH team with 0.3 ITB. Plenty of money on the bench to play with, but I do like these players.

    Pickford (Dubravka)
    Milenkovic Murillo Tarkowski (Cucurella Hartman)
    Cunha Mbuemo Gordon Grealish Dango
    Haaland Wood(c) (Thiago)

    Others I'm interested in include:

    Pope Kelleher Sels
    Burn Kayode VDB Livramento Schar
    Damsgaard Barnes Elanga Ndiaye
    Pedro

I would not go with 2 Everton for starters, personally not even 1. Double Forest also a risk when you could start Cucu.
I also do not like Grealish and Dango. Would prefer Neto & Kudus/BJ. Would drop one of these (Gordon included) anyway to start JPedro, attack is fine otherwise.

I don't think doubling or tripling is adding risk, so I'm not persuaded. Pedro I do want, and Kudus could come into my thinking (I did just bring him in for his impending price rise, but not anticipating having him at the deadline, necessarily). What's wrong with Grealish and Dango. Seem like great punts with great fixtures to me.

        1. 420king
          • 11 Years
          3 months, 13 days ago

I would normally agree when it comes to doubling, but it is in fact adding risk when you are betting on a team with ~33% CS odds to get one. And in Forest's case you have Chelsea who have nearly same odds and a decent goal threat to boot, so it also makes sense, unless you are absolutely sure West Ham are unable to score a goal and will be the trashing boys until the coach is sacked.

There's isn't much wrong with Dango, it's just that there are as dangerous players with better fixtures at home. Grealish, idk..seems to be too soon to tell and I'd rather bet on proven players that preferrably play at home (Everton are not favourites to win the game!).

Yes but I have the injured RAN, Saka and Palmer, and only 1FT, so it might be the best week for me to WC, even if it's awful, especially if there are more injuries tomorrow (Triple Liverpool) and other things that might cause my players to drop in price. Plan was always to FH but I would have to absorb price drops to do that

Thanks. That's the plan. WC in 4, maybe 5. But with the injuries mounting, team value could take a massive hit, which is not ideal right before a WC haha. Currently planning to continue with the FH plan unless there are more injuries tomorrow.

This year is the first year I want to absorb all price drops and avoid early transfers
TV didn’t help me at all
                Points over pounds

Thanks for this. Last season was the first time I actually had good team value, but that was the product of my first ever good start! I ended up sinking in the second half of the season, so you could say that TV didn't help, but maybe it would have been worse with a lower budget?

I was frustrated last season having to make a transfer before a WC just to save 0.1, as I was again this season selling Frimping last week for Munoz. I hate the price change part of the game. Spoils the fun, planning and individualism.

      I have

      Palmer Rutter
And bench of Dorgu Esteve Guiu

      And 2 FT

      What should I do?
      1. Palmer to Semenyo/Kudus
      2. Palmer and Rutter to Semenyo and Kudus
      3. Wait until deadline to have further injury updates on Palmer and Rutter

I am also wondering the same thing (with Gordon also added to that list for his fixtures)…… I already have Kudus and I am leaning towards bringing Semenyo in for Palmer.
