We have put together our early Scout Picks for Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With EFL Cup ties, a UEFA Conference League play-off game, Scout Squad nominations and pre-match press conferences to come, there’s still plenty of time for our weekly selection – which we’ll finalise on Friday – to change.

But this early XI at least provides a glimpse into the players and teams who will be under consideration.

ABOUT THE SCOUT PICKS ‘BUS TEAM’

FPL notes: Pep on Marmoush's "impact" + Haaland's fitness

As with the final Scout Picks, there are certain restrictions for our squad:

  • An £83.0m budget for our starting XI
  • An overall squad limit of £100.0m
  • No more than three players per team

GAMEWEEK 3 FIXTURES

Above: The Gameweek 3 fixtures sorted by difficulty on our Season Ticker.

THE LIKELY LADS

FPL pre-season: Fernandes assist, Amorim on Mbeumo + Cunha

The massive investment in attack unsurprisingly hasn’t been a cure-all for Manchester United’s problems.

But the ongoing inquest can maybe wait till after Gameweek 3, when the fixtures stiffen again. This weekend, Burnley visit Old Trafford. Even at their absolute nadir in 2024/25, United still scored three goals in five of their six meetings with last season’s newly promoted trio.

There have been glimmers of promise from the new-look attack, too, even if they’ve not been an instant smash-hit. The Red Devils are top for shots (32) and efforts in the box (21) despite facing two defences that didn’t give too many chances away last season.

You can use reasoning to justify any of their £8.0m+ midfielders this week.

Burnley have allowed twice as many chances to be created (ie passes/crosses that led to shots) from their left flank as from their right. Good news for Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m), then?

But the majority of the high-xG shots (and the three goals conceded at Spurs) have come from the left-to-middle zone. That’s more Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) territory.

Above: Burnley’s xG shot conceded map in 2025/26

Against a block as deep as Burnley’s, Bruno Fernandes‘ (£9.0m) probing could be key to unpicking the Clarets’ defence. Joint-third among all FPL midfielders for defensive contributions (DC/DefCon) in 2025/26, he’s also United’s leading chance creator (six).

At the back, there’s the set-piece threat and DC magnetism of Matthijs de Ligt (£5.0m), who has banked DefCon points in both fixtures this season, and Leny Yoro (£4.5m), or the open-play attacking potential of Patrick Dorgu (£4.5m).

Away from United, you can bet your bottom dollar that Nottingham Forest players are going to feature prominently in the Scout Picks. A sorry West Ham United side travel to the City Ground this weekend, with Graham Potter under serious pressure. Ranked 19th for xG, they’ve also been a shambles at the back.

Their set-piece woes raise interest in the likes of Nikola Milenkovic (£5.5m) and Chris Wood (£7.7m), especially:

IN CONTENTION

3pm team news: Estupinan benched, no Isak or Eze 2

The likely loss of four players to injury or suspension could seriously harm Newcastle United’s chances at Elland Road.

They might still have enough to see off Leeds United but the absence of a first-choice centre-half and two of their combative midfield three undoubtedly dents their clean sheet prospects. Dan Burn (£5.0m) could still worm his way into our Scout Picks: he’ll have watched with interest as Leeds conceded two set-piece goals to Arsenal, while he’s banked DC points in both appearances in 2025/26.

Further forward, Anthony Gordon‘s (£7.5m) suspension bumps up the xMins of Anthony Elanga (£7.0m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.5m). Barnes has his critics and there are sometimes questions about his wider contribution to the Newcastle cause. But he’s got that Alonso-esque knack of delivering goals and assists regardless of his overall performance: there were almost as many attacking returns (14) as starts (17) last season.

Above: Newcastle players sorted by points per start in 2024/25

It’s fair to say that, were Newcastle and Brentford at home to Leeds and Sunderland in Gameweek 3, we’d have more confidence. We saw what both newly promoted clubs were capable of in Gameweek 1 when they had raucous home crowds at their back.

The DefCon-amassing Sepp van den Berg (£4.5m) is nevertheless under consideration, along with string-puller Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.9m), last year’s 11-goal success story Kevin Schade (£7.0m) and penalty-taking targetman Igor Thiago (£6.0m). Despite facing two of the division’s weakest teams in Gameweeks 1 and 2, Sunderland rank a lowly 17th for xG:

Above: Teams sorted by the lowest xG in 2025/26 to date

Wolves v Everton is a fixture that had all the hallmarks of being an early-season ‘El Crapico’ but Sunday’s win will buoy the Toffees. This weekend’s hosts, very much a team in transition without Messrs Cunha, Semedo and Ait-Nouri, are goalless and pointless, too.

A revitalised Jack Grealish (£6.5m), fresh from two assists, is a midfield candidate but interest at this point is predominantly in the more tried-and-tested defence. James Tarkowski (£5.5m) has carried on where he left off in 2024/25, delivering DefCon points in both Gameweeks.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur carry their unbeaten records into home fixtures that might not be straightforward tests. Indeed, Fulham and Bournemouth got something from these corresponding matches last season. Still, there’s a bit of a feelgood factor with the Blues and the Lilywhites at present, so there’s an argument to try and ride the crest of the wave regardless of opposition – Spurs did go to the Etihad and win 2-0 last weekend, after all.

Richarlison (£6.7m), Pedro Porro (£5.5m), Mohammed Kudus (£6.6m), Joao Pedro (£7.6m), Estevao (£6.5m), Pedro Neto (£7.0m) and Marc Cucurella (£6.1m) aren’t far from our thoughts, if not top of the shopping list.

In a week where we might overlook Mohamed Salah (£14.5m, see below) and the three other £10.0m+ assets are all flagged, Erling Haaland (£14.1m) is the stand-out premium pick – if we want any, of course. He’s never blanked in five meetings with Brighton and Hove Albion, scoring five goals and assisting another.

THE LONGER SHOTS

FPL pre-season: Isak’s future + Arteta on Gyokeres' pens

The giants of Arsenal play host to the titans of Liverpool this weekend, making them both seem normal-sized in FPL terms. It’s the type of clash that you’d usually shy away from on a Free Hit, which is essentially what the Scout Picks is, but is it wrong to just ignore it?

Liverpool were dominated by 10-man Newcastle on Monday, having also conceded two goals at home to Bournemouth.

The defence looks vulnerable and the gaps seem too big between the lines, while Ibrahima Konate (£5.5m) is visibly struggling for form at present. That’s effectively who the left-drifting Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) will be up against in Gameweek 2.

Above: Teams sorted by most big chances conceded (BC) in the opening two Gameweeks

Perhaps this fixture deserves a second look after all.

On my WC, haven't changed this too much.. will play Dorgu this week but this is the main team. Thoughts? any changes?

    Vicario
    Cucu - Romero - Saliba
    Ndoye - Kudus - Gakpo - Cunha
Haaland - Joao Pedro - Ekitike

    Dubravka - Reijnders - Dorgu - Gudmonsson

Very nice, i did a draft and got to a very similar team which is tempting me. Mine got to raya, porro and van de van instead of vicario, romero and saliba.

Happy going without Salah? I found there's a lot of forward options but not many decent mids so far. I also liked the front 3 of Ekitike, Pedro and Wood

I think so, everything is going through the left hand side and the middle for Liverpool so far, I mean Salah has returned in both previous games but lets be honest he was incredibly lucky to get both. He has looked pretty pony so far.. which no doubt will come back to bite me, but think the rest of my team looks solid without him.

Have some problems with my team.

Wirtz: In a cagey affair against Arsenal, Szoboszlai physicality and presence will be needed. I would prefer if he started over Wirtz. Will Bradley be ready to fill in at RB?

Palmer: The Fulham game seems too soon for him but I see him returning the week after.

Georginio Rutter: "should be back soon" if he's not ready this gameweek I'll probably get a 1pter from Marc Guiu as he's settling in

Ait Nouri: His timeline is 1-3 weeks out, if it's only a week or two keeping him after the free hit is not bad at all.

Tempted to free hit even with 2FTs because:

-I'll have more information to use both transfers
-Can stack United assets for just this week
-Can captain Haaland then return to Salah for the following few fixtures

Do you trust United enough to structure a free hit around them?

If they drew 1-1 I would not be surprised in the slightest.

I don't trust United enough but if 3/4 are doubtful to play for just this week I'd rather free hit to keep them long-term

True but we have more chips this year and can always hold our transfers for rainy days. Hard to stockpile transfers at the start.

      I hear you on this.

I am wondering whether to free hit this week even though I have 2 FT.

Main reason I’m probably not going to do that is that I will not likely be wildcarding over the IB.

Potentially in need of a decent 5.0m midfielder if I’m to move from Palmer to Haaland. Any that have stood out in the first two GWs particularly with defcon? Obviously not expecting amazing options but Sarr (Spurs) seems the pick of a not great bunch as it stands.

Don't want to WC this week, may do it during IB, just sell one of Palmer and Rutter, the one we hear won't start?

    Sanchez
    Porro/Dorgu/Neco
    Salah/Palmer*/Bruno/Rutter*/Reijnders
    Watkins/Pedro

That's mostly GTG if you don't want Haaland. Could be Sarr over Reijnders, BJ over Kudus, Porro over VDV, or some 4.5 over one of the 4.0.

    Not a brag question……

My teams not great this week, but I can scramble through.

Stick with Dorgu as my only 4.5 defender or you prefer another?

Excluding VDV as I have Porro.

          Mykolenko (4.9m) spotted in training

Huge for Everton. They've been playing Garner at LB!

Yes, i would love to see him back.

With 0.4 itb, i might be hoping for a diouf to myko swoop sometime soon

He was impressive. He will probably move to central midfield when Mykolenko is ready.

Though where that leaves KDH with Dibling arriving I'm not sure. Some healthy competition in that squad.

Thoughts on Muñoz and Sarr on a wildcard? Could do Sarr > Dango but not sure.

                  First to 7 votes wins

Which scores more over the next few GWs?

                  A: Haaland + Ndoye + Dango (-4)
                  B: Wood + Palmer + Cunha

Any significant reason why Cunha is the popular pick ahead of Mbuemo? Is it just that he's currently starting as a striker?

surely mount gets benched for him, I think it'll help Cunha a bit if he drops a bit deep, he did well doing that at Wolves

Because he moves to ST when Mount plays. And Amorim loves Mount.

If Sesko does start games, I think there's a good chance that Mount comes on for him frequently.

Primarily based on his NPxGI data from small sample size.

Amorim on Šeško on the bench: “Benjamin has been with us for two weeks, he's trying to understand everything”.

“We need to be patient a little. We just want to win the match and try to help all our players”.

There isn't one other than the fact Cunha has looked a bit more lively in the opening few games.

Mbeumo has corners though and if it weren't for a deflection from Muniz would have got an assist for the goal at the weekend. I think there's not enough separating them to make a call one way or the other.

How would he have got an assist? Without the deflection it would’ve gone wide.

As in, if Yoro had the header on target instead of being deflected he gets the assist from the corner.

I’m on a wildcard (wasn’t planned — got a bit trigger-happy while tinkering over the weekend trying to fit Isak … absolutely livid).

Would you hold onto Sels for this week and switch to Vicario next gameweek,
or just bring Vicario in now? to avoid a FT

I’ve already got Milenkovic, and I’d still like some Spurs defensive coverage since I swapped Porro out for Cucurella.

(main 3 defenders are milenkovic munoz cucurella) + burnley and leeds def

                        On a WC

                        Sanchez / Dubravka
                        Gabriel / VdV / Munoz / Reinildo / Esteve
                        Salah / Reijnders / Cunha / Elanga / Sarr
                        Pedro / Wood / Ekitike

1.1 ITB. Clearly the low ownerships in my team are Cunha and Elanga. Early days but only clocked 19 points this week.

I've got 2 FTs, not sure if I need to hit the panic button and WC yet!

                        Sanchez / Dubravka
                        Murillo / Pedro Porro / Alderete / Wan-Bissaka / Rodon
                        Salah / Palmer / Fernandes / Mitoma / Dewsbury-Hall
                        Bowen / Watkins / Giui

I'm potentially thinking Palmer > Gakpo/Kudus/Johnson/Elanga and the Giui > Joao Pedro
                        Any thoughts?
