With the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 3 deadline just two days away, we’ll be hearing from our panel of guest writers and pundits.

Here, eight-time top 10k finisher Zophar hosts his weekly Q&A, taking questions on ‘DefCon’, whether the premium picks are worth the cash and the best replacements for Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) and Cole Palmer (£10.5m).

You can read his Gameweek 3 team reveal here.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: DC magnets + Bench Boost 1

Q: Are premium options worth the money with both Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland looking less dangerous?

Q. How long until the penny drops? Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer have returned just 11 attacking returns since Gameweek 30. Time to truly spread the funds? So many split captaincy weeks make this more viable.

Auto Draft 90

(via Pedersen and @FPL_here_fishy)

A: I think we must start this article with a reminder, and this will be relevant to every question here: it’s only been two Gameweeks. We have only seen 180 minutes of football from Premier League sides. Players/teams are rusty, formations/systems are gelling, and it will be a while before we see the cream rise to the top.

That being said, let’s ask ourselves: what has changed with Erling Haaland (£14.1m) and Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) to make them worse picks than last year?

With Salah, I think Liverpool have made a conscious effort to future-proof themselves for life without the Egyptian. The signings of Florian Wirtz (£8.4m) and Hugo Ekitike (£8.7m), and their intent to sign Alexander Isak (£10.4m, whether they are successful or not remains to be seen), are a clear signal of that.

Arne Slot built his team to feed Salah last season and from the opening two weeks, that does not seem to be the case: the Egyptian registered a total of 0.51 xGI over the two matches. I think the new 4-2-3-1 shape isn’t as reliant on him, while the lack of Trent Alexander-Arnold on that side also has a detrimental effect and the relationship with Ekitike just isn’t there yet. Both of Salah’s returns have come when the striker wasn’t on the pitch.

So yes, perhaps Salah is a worse asset than last season, but with Gameweeks 4 and 5 coming up, when he is a standout captain choice, he is worth sticking with. This could change post-transfer window if Isak joins; we might see the goal contributions spread out a bit more. We still need to give it more time, though.

Haaland had a poor season by his standards but was still posting decent xG numbers and I think, unlike Salah, I only expect Haaland’s goal share to go up this season. I look around the City team and I do not see many other goal scorers. Tijjani Reijnders (£5.7m) will chip in, of course, but their wingers and midfielders are more creators. We have already seen the influence of Pep Lijnders in their first two matches; City’s press is much more aggressive, they’re playing higher up the pitch and there is more transitional play, which suits Haaland’s strengths. We are perhaps overreacting to a blank against Spurs and I am confident Haaland remains a top asset.

In general, I would say if captaincy was not a consideration in FPL, there would be a case for going without either of Haaland or Salah and spreading the funds around. But as it stands, we need a captain every week and with Cole Palmer (£10.5m) and Bukayo Saka’s (£10.0m) fitness doubtful, it just makes sense to own one of these ultra-premiums right now.

Q: With defensive contributions, could 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 be the play moving forward, or is it too soon to tell?

      For the time-being, Haaland.

I'm slowly working my way towards both. You should def get both on a WC.

At first, I found this far too unflexible, but with the number of mid-range mids and just one premier defender, it is def doable.

Is Man United coach the worst job on earth? You're in charge of an average team with unrealistic expectations and taking all the blame when things inevitably go wrong.

Our goal this season was top 8 and don't lose to Grimsby, how is that the "worst" compared to someone like Guardiola who's expected to compete for every trophy every season?

          1. Sgt Frank Drebin
            • 9 Years
            3 months, 9 days ago

Well, Guardiola wasn't sacked even after a very poor first season. And you're still competing for the top 8, no? After 2 games in the league he's under huge pressure and fans call on social media to sack him (one of those was Arsenal and you weren't even worse than them). Sure, losing to Grimsby doesn't look good, but don't think that's on Amorim.

Calling finishing 3rd a "very poor season" for Guardiola is exactly what I'm talking about - his expectations are miles are ahead of any other manager in the league, to the point where people were calling him finished last season.

It's not just after 2 games in the league though is it? He's managed 45 games for us and has a 36% win rate. He was given the benefit of the doubt (after finishing FIFTEENTH) due to lack of preseason and signings, but he's got those now and the team is still playing extremely poorly.

Is being slightly better than a team who always struggle at Old Trafford (we lost that game btw) enough to back a bloke who is so tactically inflexible he'd rock up to Powerleague with a back 5?

              1. Sgt Frank Drebin
                • 9 Years
                3 months, 9 days ago

Ok, but the point is, that the expectation for Guardiola are high, but they also have great players. Man United has very average team (even after the summer spending, although it's an upgrade from last season) and the expectations for Amorim are way higher than what they can realistically achieve (and I don't really think that fans will be happy with an 8th place finish in the league).

Don't think he can be judged based on the last season, came in the middle of it and United was already in a disastrous state. I would wait and see how they do this season before any conclusions. Besides, how is it possible that the last 10 coaches were so bad? Maybe it's not the issue then? Imho United is a mid table team now and the sooner the fans realize the better. The transfer policy is 100% to blame.

Moreover, not saying to back him after a loss to Arsenal, rather that there is no point to fire him over that game.

The expectations for Guardiola are high because his CV is absolutely ridiculous, even before getting into his City stint. Coming 3rd in his first season was seen as a bit of a letdown because he'd won everything else before signing. Amorim doesn't have that history.

The team is average because the system makes players look worse than they are. Playing Bruno as part of a midfield two, playing fullbacks as centrebacks, playing wingers as inside 10s - it's all just square pegs in round holes, which is due to the lack of tactical flexibility (an Amorim problem) and the club's poor squad-building.

Before Amorim arrived, we had played 12 league games and sat in 6th only 7 points off 1st. We finished fifteenth. That is entirely on the manager and it's absolutely ridiculous to say otherwise. The transfer policy is bad, which I already said, but that doesn't mean the manager is good. We've won trophies and finished high up the table numerous times with our "bad coaches" because they've been able to work with the hand they were dealt.

Moreover, you are not listening to anything I said - my feelings are not based on just the Arsenal name or even last night. There's nearly 50 games worth of poor performances and worse results to look at. Choosing to ignore all of that to suggest that Amorim's not been given a chance is just bizarre.

Amorim will be sacked and you're gonna repeat the same cycle as for the last 12 years. Rangnick was right all along.

Savinho and Kudus are more creators dribbling and taking on players and will be more involved in the game, whereas Brennan is the one that's making the runs in the box waiting to get on the end of the chance created, and more likely to score goals.

Brennan's minutes will likely be fewer as he can drift out of games, but he's someone you would definitely want to jump on when he's on a purple patch and the fixtures are good.

As for competition in places, until Spurs sign someone (and they most likely won't play in GW3 anyway) there's only Tel and Odobert available for Spurs to occupy the attacking slots behind the main forward. I'd expect Johnson to start most games and he's my Palmer replacement this week.

Hell yeah. Personally I'd go Kudus over Johnson - better in the long run for starts and minutes + a little extra cash that you'll need when the big chaps start firing. IMO

Good point! And i think kudus taking some setpieces? Or am i wrong

Yep, i think he has taken 5 or 6 of their 9 set pieces so far. I was torn between the two originally but have landed on Kudus.

I've wildcarded already. But with cash to spare I am working towards this:

        Sanchez.
        Cucurella. Munoz. Dorgu.
        Salah. Semenyo. Reindeer. Xhaka.
        Haaland. JP. Gyro.

        Dub. Reinaldo. Esteve. King

In a week or two this team is power.

        Thoughts? Thanks in advance chaps.

Sure. Why not? Dorgu looks the most lively out of the manu backs, as bad as they are.

Which 4.5 would you go for? Guessing VdV or boring Andersen

Just looked at the fixtures for Strand Larsen. Great fixtures for Wolves and Newcastle if he moves, especially when you FH in GW6. Might be a good early transfer ahead of a bandwagon and for lining up a Bench Boost later on.

I'm waiting until after the transfer window is closed before looking at Larsen. Larsen is considered to be the Wilson replacement. Isak could stay at Newcastle or they may buy another CF.

No room with Haaland, Ekitike and JP locked in. I do rate his chances with that Newcastle midfield behind him, though.

SL has looked lifeless without Cunha.

Arsenal scoring 3 corners in 2 games, while Man Utd lost to Grimsby. Play your best players, not the fixtures.

        Kelleher
        Rodon VDV Cucu
        Reijnders Salah Mbuemo Kudus Sarr
        Gyokeres JPedro

Waiting for confirmation on Ait-Nouri injury before starting Rodon
Thiago on the bench, scored last night and Sunderland at the weekend albeit away, worth swapping anyone out for a punt?
