Chip Strategy

This season, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have one Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain chip to use before Gameweek 19’s deadline, necessitating a strategy of early usage.

Some of you will no doubt already have a good idea of when you will be deploying your chips. But for those still unsure when to hit ‘activate’, here are a few ideas.

Keeping in mind that everyone will be topped up to five free transfers in Gameweek 16, here is the mindset behind when to use each chip (excluding Triple Captain, which is player-related rather than team).

EACH CHIP’S LOGIC

FPL 2025/26: Double chips as Assistant Manager gets the boot

Wildcard

Fixtures form the rationale for all three of these. The ideal Wildcard is based around mass fixture swings, where great runs begin for some teams and end for others.

Our pre-season ‘jump on, jump off’ article helps with identifying such moments.

Fixtures aside, the Wildcard is also a great cure-all when your team has racked up too many injuries, suspensions and rotation risks for free transfers to deal with.

Free Hit

If you have one of the very expensive Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Erling Haaland (£14.4m) pair, try activating this when the other has one irresistible fixture amidst less essential ones. An attempt to both have and eat cake.

The Free Hit can also be about multiple popular FPL teams having the same tough weekend, often versus each other.

Bench Boost

If you’re a manager who prefers 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations, it means 75% of your typical bench is defensive. So it makes sense to Bench Boost when several cheap £4.0m and £4.5m players at the back have appealing fixtures.

Of course, ‘lesser’ sides being against each other usually means that the ‘big’ ones are facing off too, which isn’t ideal for the others. Gameweek 8, for example.

THREE SPECIFIC PLANS

GW8 Wildcard, GW9 Bench Boost, GW15 Free Hit

October’s international break comes before Gameweek 8, coinciding with positive Liverpool and West Ham fixture swings, plus the negative ones awaiting Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur.

Slightly earlier, in Gameweek 7, things get good for Arsenal and bad for Nottingham Forest.

Which FPL chip strategy is best for you? 1

Here, managers give themselves a chance to maximise the Bench Boost by using it straight afterwards.

In Gameweek 9, the £4.0m Burnley and Leeds names get to face Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United.

Free Hitting in Gameweek 15 means stocking up on Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle versus the promoted trio. All while knowing that, before they meet again, lots of free transfers become available and Salah will be at AFCON.

GW8 Wildcard, GW11 Free Hit, GW14 Bench Boost

Alternatively, the Bench Boost could wait until Gameweek 14. A time when so many popular teams have good fixtures, yet it’s not great for lower teams, meaning some cheap starters need to emerge from higher up the league between now and then.

As for Gameweek 11, it’s the weekend of Man City v Liverpool and Tottenham v Manchester United. Free Hit users can ditch those names and go big on Chelsea, Forest and West Ham, at home to Wolves, Leeds and Burnley.

GW11 Free Hit, GW13 Wildcard, GW14 Bench Boost

A fortnight break also precedes Gameweek 12, but a leading idea in the Fantasy community is to Wildcard in Gameweek 13. This allows long-term ownership of superb Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle fixtures.

In Gameweek 14, these face Sunderland, Fulham and Spurs, while prospects also look good for Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace assets.

TRIPLE CAPTAIN OPTIONS

As for the Triple Captain, you could pair one of the following with whichever strategy you opt for:

  • Gameweek 10: Bukayo Saka/Viktor Gyokeres – Burnley (a)
  • Gameweek 13: Erling Haaland – v Leeds (h)
  • Gameweek 14: Mohamed Salah/Alexander Isak – v Sunderland (h)
  • Gameweek 15: Erling Haaland – v Leeds (h)
  • Gameweek 19: Alexander Isak – v Leeds (h)/Erling Haaland – v Sunderland (a)

As a Palace fan, the source for this info is pretty reliable:
"Double injury boost for Crystal Palace
Ismaila Sarr will miss Sunderland match but hamstring injury not deemed too severe. Adam Wharton not completely ruled out from featuring on Saturday, however unlikely to be involved."

Wait until after Glasners presser and see what he says. But with the possibility of Sarr only missing 1 game, I would sell Cunha for Semenyo, bench Sarr and play double Forest defence.
You have a decent team that just needs a couple of tweaks, no need to take a hit. Next week I'd be getting rid of Guiu as he's a big minutes risk.

Wrestling with whether to sell Wood for Mateta. Got triple Forest and it just seems like too much exposure for the sake of 2 or 3 decent fixtures for a team that now has so much uncertainty around it. Mateta would become Haaland in gw6 so it's a 2-week play.

The alternative is to just play Wood (or Anderson) against Arsenal, bank the transfer and see what happens. But I really don't want to have another crap start and be chasing the pack for months like last season, so my patience is thin.

    Wood to Mateta - YES/NO?

I'm not seeing the uncertainty around Forest other than the manager change. Whereas Palace who are low key a mess have injuries everywhere without Forest's depth and a captain who probably doesn't want to be there. The manager change for Forest might even be a good thing for Wood, we don't know yet.

Those are good points. But Forest have been playing poorly, and Palace have looked solid albeit pre-injuries. I do suspect that the Sunderland game may not be quite as easy as it looks on paper so there's that too. When in doubt do nothing I guess.

They did play poorly against West Ham, they actually took a point off Palace the week before at Selhurst and probably should have beaten them? A draw certainly wasn't an unfair reflection on Forest. Yes agree about the Sunderland game I can see them coming over and making it tight and messy and I don't know at the moment how healthy Sarr and Wharton are. Even if Wharton gets back for this, he's not a durable footballer, that is a ticking timebomb with europe etc...The Guehi thing could be really significant, do they even keep him as the captain? I'm surprised so many are bullish about Palace who were great last season but they haven't invested anywhere near enough in squad depth even if they'd kept Eze and there are vibes the manager isn't happy either.

      Q) Wood to Mateta.
      A) Yes

Wood has just travelled half way around the world and back, has a very tough fixture and a new manager.
Mateta had no IB involvement, attended club training as normal and likely plays the full 90.

And all this crap people spurt about Guehi "not wanting to be there" needs to STOP. He is 25, goes about his work in a profesional manner, and has NEVER made any comments or taken any actions to destabilize the playing group or the club.
He knows his time will come in 2026 when his contract expires, he will have more suitors due to being a free agent, and can pick the club of his choice.

Some of those fixture runs in the next week ish for the Champions League teams are brutal. 3 aways for Chelsea in 7 days. 3 games for Liverpool in 6 days. Man City and Newcastle going Thursday Champions League to tough away games a week on Sunday in the league. Wouldn't be the biggest shock if we started to see some surprises this weekend to the lineups.

Without any liverpool, palace, arsenal and newcastle, I have decided to activate FH4. Feels like a good window with Haaland, Palmer, Forest, Villa, Spurs in my team for GW6-7.

The big debate is who to get alongside salah for liverpool. It feels like gakpo will play so i will get him given limited alternatives in the midfield.

It leaves me with Virgil vs Ekitike. Let s see if Slot discusses Isak today. if we dont learn anything, which of the two combos looks best?

    Virgil + JP
    or
    Ekitike + Lacroix

You’d anticipate that international injuries may affect the odds to some degree, so if your source isn’t reflecting that and they prove to be inaccurate retrospectively, then I’d use the bookies and spread betting.

Thanks for providing this btw, I always look out for it for the crumb of comfort it provides lol

Thanks, I mean they've been OK and I like them, but to not see any change over a 2 week period kinda rings alarm bells to me.

Going back to doing my own clean sheet percentages from odds will probably mean a later post in the week, say Thursday if I'm on top of everything, but I don't have a problem with doing that.

I hope the crumbs have been very comforting for you and may they continue to do so! 😀

        This...

current attacking 8 on wc is the following:

    Semenyo, Gakpo, Mbuemo, Grealish, Stach.
    Haaland, Gyokeres, J pedro.

Is it mad to go Thiago instead of J pedro and upgrade Stach to someone like Eze, Elanga or Xavi? if went this route its £7.6m to spend on a midfielder.

Worried about Pedro's minutes with europe coming up as they will want him fit on both fronts so may only get 60 mins or so if they are winning league games

Keep Pedro. Stach / King can do a job as a rotation option for now.

if i have pedro i can upgrade stach to paqueta, would rotate with grealish but might be too much sitting on my bench

I have this combo on WC also. Gives me flexibility to bench Grealish when he plays Liverpool away and when he is ineligible vs City.

Morning all. Could I please get some thoughts on this GW4 WC draft?

    Raya
    Gabriel | VVD | Muñoz
    Salah (c) | Semenyo | Grealish | Kudus
Ekitike | João Pedro | Mateta

    Dubravka | L.Paquetá | Senesi | Gudmundsson

Can get to Isak in two moves by downgrading Kudus > King or by downgrading one of the premium defenders. Thanks!

gtg, strong bench as well which i like. Wary of not having Haaland though, can see him getting back to his best

True, his mins will be massively reduced for now hence why I've left him out for the time being. When he starts firing though I'll definitely look to bring him in.

Like it, very similar to my FH. Same front 3, all up 7 starters duplicated.

    A) Igor Thiago
    B) Georginio Rutter

    Slot in Isak

'Don't expect him to be every single game 90 minutes on the pitch. That's definitely not going to happen in the upcoming weeks. He missed a proper preseason - I think he missed 3-4 months of team sessions, and so now we have to build him up gradually. So, that's going to be a challenge, but we signed him not only for the upcoming weeks, we signed him for six years...'

Slot on Isak's fitness: "We will treat Alex the same as [Sweden] did. He missed a proper pre-season so now we have to build him up gradually. That's going to be a challenge but we've signed him not only for two weeks but for the next six years."

    Thoughts on my WC team?
GW 6 will be a FH to bring in Haaland.
    BB in gw 5.
1.5m still in the bank. I like the budget mids as they’re all attacking:
Could’ve done with Bruno but prefer the strong defence.

    Raya
    Virgil - Munoz - Cucurella - Andersen
    Salah - Semenyo - Paqueta
    Pedro - Mateta - Gyokeres

    Dubravka - Stach - Senesi - Elliott

Arne Slot confirms Jones injury :

“I think the players are fit. We train today for the first time with most of them. The non-internationals trained with the Under-21s already. Curtis Jones got injured in the last game and will not be available.”

Not worth it. Either go VVD or save funds with the likes of Senesi.
