Mladen Petric is the star performer as Fulham rip Norwich apart. Michu and Nathan Dyer both bag a brace as Michael Laudrup’s regime at Swansea gets off to a dream start. West Brom hand Brendan Rodgers a nightmare debut as Liverpool boss, while Demba Ba is back amongst the goals as Newcastle see off Spurs at the Sports Direct Arena:

Mladen Petric
We knew all about his form heading into the season opener with Norwich yesterday and resultantly handed Petric a place in the Gameweek 1 Scout Picks. The Croatian’s five goals in pre-season had grabbed plenty of attention and he continued his lethal displays for the Cottagers by notching twice and providing an assist as Martin Jol’s side hammered Norwich 5-0. Fulham are always likely to get amongst the goals at home – only the top five scored more times in front of their own supporters last term and with Bryan Ruiz tucked in behind in a 4-4-1-1, Petric looks a sound investment at 6.0 in FPL and 6.8 in the Sky Sports game. With three away trips in his next four, however, he could struggle for goals – Fulham scored just 12 times away from home all last season and travel to Old Trafford next weekend. He’s earning interest but the Scout jury is still out on his short-term potential with just two home games in the next six to come, one of which is against the City defence.

The Fulham Midfield
Priced at 4.5 in FPL, Alex Kacaniklic justified the recent interest shown on the site by grabbing a goal in the demolition of Norwich. With Kerim Frei injured, Hugo Rodallega still being eased into the first-team fold and Clint Dempsey looking for an exit, Kacaniklic is staking a claim for a regular role both in Jol’s starting XI and a place in our midfields as a viable budget option. The winger was outdone by fellow wide man Damien Duff, though, after the Irishman bagged a goal and assist – at 6.0 in FPL he perhaps looks most likely to maintain his starting berth, while Steve Sidwell also came to the fore; he stepped up to slot home the fifth from the spot, though it’s unclear where he is in the pecking order, as Ruiz, Petric and Duff had all been subbed off before the award.

Michu
The Spaniard wasted little time in announcing himself to the Premier League with a spectacular debut as Swansea ruthlessly swept aside QPR. Handed the role in “the hole” behind Danny Graham, Michu continued his La Liga form of last term – where he notched 15 times for Rayo Vallecano – by scoring twice and providing an assist in the Welsh club’s stunning 5-0 win at Loftus Road. With five home fixtures in the next seven Gameweeks, Michael Laudrup’s side seem set for significant investment and Michu – priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a mere 5.5 in the Sky Sports game – already sits on 16 FPL points, pre-bonus.

The Swansea Wide Men
We have to mention the wingers here, too. Last week we highlighted Laudrup’s decision to tweak the roles of the Swansea wide men and yesterday it paid off handsomely. Nathan Dyer bagged a brace and looks a steal at 5.5 in FPL if he can continue in the first XI, Wayne Routledge provided a pair of assists and Scott Sinclair also managed to find the net, despite a brief substitute role late in the second half. The latter could well be on his way out of the Liberty after refusing to sign a new contract, though – Laudrup’s decision to start with Routledge may indicate his thinking towards Sinclair, though it’s worth noting that the Welsh club are determined to snap up Pablo Hernandez; the Spaniard’s acquisition may have some thinking twice about investing in Swansea’s wingers, then, with Michu looking the most secure option amongst Laudrup’s midfield right now.

Demba Ba
A hugely disappointing end to the 2011/12 saw the Newcastle forward priced at just 7.5 this time round but he ended a scoring drought that went all the way back to February by curling home an exquisite opener in his side’s 2-1 win over Spurs. Handed a central role once again as Alan Pardew rolled out a 4-4-2, Ba overshadowed Papiss Cisse and served a reminder of his capabilities through the middle – with home games against Villa and Norwich in addition to a trip to Reading in the next five, that price tag is beginning to look more enticing. Ba was somewhat unlucky not to grab two yesterday – he is usually the club’s number one spot-kick taker but had to watch Hatem Ben Arfa score the second from the spot, with the Frenchman refusing to hand the ball over after he was brought down in the box.

Kevin Nolan
The West Ham midfielder had failed to feature in pre-season since sustaining a toe injury in mid-July but, handed a starting role by Sam Allardyce, scored the only goal of the game at home to Villa. The Nolan v Mark Noble debate has seen plenty of debate, with the latter’s cheaper price tag, in addition to spot-kick and set-piece duties, making him the more popular pick by FPL managers but Nolan’s Premier League know-how is already proving decisive for his owners. With a strong set of fixtures still to come, including home clashes with Fulham, Reading and Southampton in the next seven, Big Sam’s side have certainly been handed the platform to get their campaign off to a confident start.

The West Brom Attack
Handed a role out wide as Steve Clarke opted for a 4-2-3-1 against former club Liverpool, Peter Odemwingie looks to have stepped up the spot-kick pecking order for the Baggies. Both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel gave away penalties – with the Dane receiving his marching orders – but after Shane Long missed the first one, the Nigerian walked up to slot home the second. Zoltan Gera (a 5.0 priced midfielder) is looking an intriguing cut-price proposition – the Hungarian was handed a wide role in the attacking midfield three and opened the scoring for the hosts, while Romelu Lukaku boosted his chances of a starting role after scoring within 10 minutes of climbing off the bench for his new club. With Everton, Reading and QPR at the Hawthorns in the next six, Steve Clarke’s side already look an intriguing option for mid-price talent.

Adam Le Fondre
Reading’s top scorer in pre-season, he was picked up by less than 1% of FPL managers compared to Pavel Pogrebnyak’s 17% ahead of the club’s double Gameweek. Le Fondre earned the Royals a point against Stoke by slotting home from the spot in the dying seconds – all the more intriguing due to the fact that Ian Harte, last year’s regular taker, was still on the pitch at the time. Although Hal Robson-Kanu took the club’s last penalty in pre-season, he – along with Pogrebnyak – was already subbed off prior to the award. Once Jimmy Kebe returns from injury, Robson-Kanu is perhaps unlikely to hold down a first-team role suggesting Le Fondre has a strong chance of topping the spot-kick pecking order for Brian McDermott’s side.

Jermain Defoe
The only viable forward option for Spurs right now, Defoe certainly highlighted his capabilities with his side’s equaliser at Newcastle yesterday. Priced at 7.5 in FPL, he is no doubt set to pick up plenty investment with a very favourable schedule now on the horizon but question marks still hang heavy over his game time – Andre Villas-Boas has already had a bid for Roberto Soldado knocked back and has been attempting to sign Emmanuel Adebayor permanently all summer; Spurs will surely pick up a centre-forward before the deadline ends, thus denting Defoe’s appeal considerably. There are further reports today stating that a deal for Adebayor is now close.

      Morning Leo

Changes are done by net volume of transfers in / out.

If a player does well, lots move to get him in. when it reaches a certain level eg: 31,000, the price should rise that night.

Price falls are similar, but also require a 10% drop in ownership.

It's a bit or a dark art, but gets eaier to predict 99% of them in a few weeks when the data is known.

People will link you to specialist sites, but you can also use the FPL transfer page ( sort by net transfers in / out)

Honestly I think the two should swap positions. I think Borini would be far more clinical in front of goal. Suarez is his own worst enemy when it comes to taking his chances.

    My notes from yesterday's games:

West Ham look very solid in defence - Collins has made a massive difference and was excellent yesterday, Demel looks more secured of a place than McCartney who could rotate with O'Brien.

Cazorla looks great and will be straight in my team when Arsenal's fixtures pick up.

Swansea were very good, but 4 of the goals came on the break when QPR were chasing a goal/had given up. Wouldn't knee jerk Michu or Dyer in just yet - next 2 games agaisnt strong defences of West Ham and Sunderland.

Not sure what to make of QPR's defence - hopefully just a blip and hopefully Nelsen will come in. Really want Fabio as a season keeper.

A Newcastle striker looks likely to become a vital part of any squad, Ba being 2.0 cheaper and Newcastle playing a 4-4-2 favours him.

Spurs look shaky at the back. AVB style does not suit the BPL.

Defoe looks great value if he nails down his role when/if Spurs sign a new striker.

McClean looks a great pick when Sunderland play sides outside of the top 8 - played behind the striker at times.

      Re: QPR's defence

Fabio looked shaky. Much more so from watching the game at the ground than the MOTD highlights. Some silly fouls, stupid passes and plenty of getting caught out of position and abused on the break.

Look for a re-shuffle soon with Boswinga stepping in permanently at RB as soon as he's fit, Onuoha moving to CB and Traore back from injury to challenge at LB and start half the games.

If we ever add a decent CB (we haven't yet) then Anton, Onuoha and Hill can fight it out to play alongside them. If we don't the preferred pairing will be Anton and Onuoha though frankly both are too error prone to play as a pairing and Hill

Nelsen is decent no? I certainly rate him ahead of your current CBs. And damn! forgot about Bosingwa coming in. Although I would be worried as a QPR fan - he isnt exactly a good defender is he? Would say Fabio is better going forward than him too.

Nelsen to me is past it but yeah, he'd be better than what we have out there based on yesterday's 'performance'.

Boswinga fits our system well - we expect the defensive mids to get over and cover when the FB's go forward - but I agree he's not a good defender.

That said, he's still be hands down our most accomplished defender and that says a lot about the R's defensive capabilities doesn't it?

Did alright yesterday, but already realising there's a few problems with my side.

    1) Michael Turner... just don't ask
    2) Marveaux - Kacinkilic looks a great replacement
    3) 3 Chelsea players: at least 1 needs to come out by GW3.

An early hit isn't the end of the world, but I'm not too keen to go down that road.

Swans in hunt for new Spanish winger.

Did believe genuinely believe Swansea would go down this season? If so, has yesterdays game( i know it's only the first game) changed your mind?

They've lost Caulker, even though he was great for Swansea, he's been replaced by Chico who had a great debut, came to England with good reviews but people were skeptical. Sigurdsson, even with his goalscoring exploits isn't that brilliant a footballer, and i think his FPL exploits cloud his ability as a player. Michu is a more than adequate replacement. Joe Allen was a loss to them, but i'm sure they'll invest the £ from the sale well, and De Guzman could turn out to have a good season. Sinclair isn't even that good, he can go to City if he wants. Dyer > Sinclair all day.

I was really underwhelmed watching Spurs last night. They look a significantly weaker side. Parker injured is a big loss for competing in the middle of the park, Modric orchestrated their fluid style play and Ade was an ideal target man with goals in him.

Ridiculous to start with Kaboul and Gallas imo. More so Gallas as I really don't rate him as a CB. Vertonghen + Caulker are better defenders, very agile and read the game well.

And i'm not sure how VDV and Siggy both fit into the team.

I agree with Round&Round. Don't think AVB is cut out for this league.

I've been saying this ever since Sig signed.

VDV over Siggy anyday. Naturally, AVB thinks the exact opposite.

VDV will start ahead of him next week I'd say. Perhaps Siggy could have a go in the Modric position

why do you think AVB thinks the opposite. VDV played up front in friendlies with Siggy in Modrich position. Yesterday VDV and Verthongen were rested because of friendlies IMO and general fitness levels. I think it is still early to call it.

We'll see but it's ridiculous to rest your best player (when fit) in such a crucial game.

VDV only played 45 mins in the friendly and hardly did any running arnd from what I gather.

But he was injured during half of the pre season, so hardly in game shape yet, especially given his age and fitness record. But I am a hopeful owner, so I might be byas 😀

Really? I thought they were ok and only conceded to a great strike and a peno. Yes those players are big misses but I think AVB will do well

It wasn't terrible but there was definitely something missing. And Defoe can't lead the line week in week out on his own. I see alot of inconsistency in their season.

      +1.

Spurs will struggle. They have basically replaced Modric with Livermore, and also losing Ade is a huge loss.

Losing Modric is gonna kill Spurs this season. He orchestrated everything, never gave the ball away.

Kaboul and Gallas did actually work out a lot better than I thought. Kaboul is really underrated everywhere. As a Newcastle fan, I thought that they locked our offense down pretty well.

The main issue for Spurs is the crazy lack of a creative force in the midfield who can distribute and a striker who can hold up the ball and knock in some headers. The latter is a must as both Bale and Lennon are best as "pure" wingers rather than playing in a close to-second striker position as they rotated doing last night. If they do not buy players that fit into AVBs system or change said system, I do not think highly of Spurs offense.

Heres the thing ,now it seems to me a lot of people with torres captain today are probably expecting him to fail and so 2or 3m has been put on one side for this outcome,to get rid as soon as possible, and i presume if he gets a couple these plans are shelved,
i spent the full 100m and got nando in and fervently hope he tears wigan a new one this afternoon and look forward to the furore when he does.......

No because he then plays Newcastle and has a blank. A 10.0 striker is not sitting on my bench. Even if he score a hat-trick im getting rid.
