Crystal Palace’s progress to the EFL Cup quarter-finals creates a scheduling headache in mid-December.

The last eight of that competition is due to be contested in the week beginning December 15. Palace have been drawn to play Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

*This article has been updated at 11:55 BST following a BBC Sport story

LACK OF FREE MIDWEEKS

But Palace’s schedule is already pretty packed, thanks to their UEFA Conference League involvement (below image from BBC Sport):

*fixtures from Dec 27 onwards have yet to be finalised

The problem is the lack of other free midweeks between now and January.

There is only one for Palace – and that’s on December 23/24.

COULD TWO GAMEWEEK 17 MATCHES BE POSTPONED?

One suggestion is that Leeds v Crystal Palace and Arsenal v Everton in Gameweek 17 are instead postponed.

That would help accommodate the EFL Cup quarter-final between Arsenal and Palace on Sunday 21 December.

LATEST REPORTS: BLANK GAMEWEEK 17 LOOKING UNLIKELY

However, BBC Sport are now reporting that Blank Gameweek 17 doesn’t look likely. Instead, the Eagles would contest two cup ties in the space of 48 hours.

If the BBC are correct, Palace’s schedule would now read as follows:

  • Sunday 14 December: Gameweek 16 – Man City (h)
  • Tuesday 16 December: EFL Cup quarter-final – Arsenal (a)
  • Thursday 18 December: Conference League – KuPS (h)
  • Sunday 21 December: Gameweek 17 – Leeds (a)

ONLY SPECULATION AT THIS STAGE

It’s still not confirmed at this early stage, then, but something just to be aware of regarding future FPL planning and (especially) chip usage. If you’ve got a Free Hit intact, for instance, this might come in useful if we do get a ‘blank’ – not that now looks likely.

We’ll hopefully not have to speculate much longer and get a definitive answer from the Premier League and the Football League soon.

Bottomed on last article so one more try…

Keep changing my mind on 7th attacker choice to get in with my FT. Who would be your favoured pick of

    A. Sarr (have Mateta)
    B. Eze
    C. Saka (would mean losing VdV over Gudmundsson to bring in Timber with my other FT)
    D. Woltemade (343)

A-C would be for Reijnders, leaving Foster on bench, D would be for Foster and benching Reijnders

Was set on B, but now less sure and leaning towards D

Boring question: who would you have ahead in the bench order?

    1. Senesi vs MCI (A)
    - DEFCON potential
    - City projected to score 2.15 goals (–1 point)

    2. Stach vs BHA (A)
    - Not nailed

I've got both those and I'd play Stach first sub but it's close.

As is, I'll sell him and Tijjani
Reijnders becomes the first sub ahead of Sensei.

I'm starting Chalabah. It's not set in stone.

Hi, would you prefer Calafiori or Raya as your 2nd Arsenal defensive option after Gabriel?

Was thinking the Calafiori originally but now Ben White is back I’m concerned about his minutes.

    Thanks guys.

    1. Tonyawesome69

Ben White (RB) doesn't directly affect Calafiori (LB)

      1. Tonyawesome69

Very small chance Timber could play LB and Ben White RB but Timber isn't ahead of Calafiori and MLS at LB

A strong pull to triple Palace is gripping me.
      Got Guehi, Sarr
      Considering Chalobah>Munoz on FT
Can’t afford Mateta, but not worried about that.
Is double Palace defence a good call?

Getting Munoz is never a bad call. Personally I wouldn't double up their defence though. Their a good defensive side but have faltered somewhat recently. I think managing Conference League and little squad depth is what would put me off.

After Nketiah’s hammy injury, it may be worth noting that Glasner may manage Mateta’s minutes to prevent fatigue. If his workload remains high, fatigue could affect his performance.

Anything is possible, but Christansus Uche is the 3rd forward and is the most likely to play up front. Glasner doesn't like to reshuffle things too much, so Pino would most likely stay in Midfield.

Pino starts in the front line already alongside Mateta and Sarr, so not a minutes risk to him.

Pino is pure class but is more of an advanced playmaker than winger / goalscorer. He drops deep a lot and prefers to arrive late to the box - so some weeks will return and other weeks get assists of assists. T

Crystal Palace are set to play four matches in eight days because of a fixture pile-up caused by reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

I was thinking to move him to Mateta but I might hold off for this week. Give the "flat track bully" another GW

3 x arsenal def is too much imo, but others are going for it. Rice (long term), Saka (more exciting) are better options.

            1) VdV -> Calafiori (can’t afford Timber)
            2) VdV -> Munoz
            3) VdV and Bruno -> Timber and Mbeumo
            4) VdV, Chalobah and Xhaka -> Timber, Munoz and 4.3 mid (-4)

            1. Bourbon, Pot Still or Islay…

Crystal Palace currently have three matches scheduled to take place in GW16, so one of these will have to be moved to a different Gameweek.
In my opinion, the most likely solution is that the Palace's Europa Conference League match remains on Thursday 18th December, the EFL quarter-final (ARS v CRY) is played on Monday 15th December, the ARS v WOL Premier League match in GW16 is moved to Thursday 18th December, and the CRY v MCI Premier League match is moved from GW16 to a new date in the second half of the season.
This would mean that only two teams get a BGW (CRY and MCI in GW16), and that there will be no resulting DGW before GW20.

Why would they need to postpone the City game in that scenario? Sorry its all very confusing.

Because it is against Palace, and one of Palace's three matches in GW16 has to be moved to a different Gameweek - it would be unfair to Palace to keep them all in GW16 by playing their Premier League match (CRY v MCI) on 13th December, which is only two days after another Europa Conference League match.

But I did overlook that City also have an EFL quarter-final match (MCI v BRE) in Gameweek 16.
So that match would also have to be played on Monday 15th December, and the BRE v LEE Premier League match in GW16 would also have to be moved to Thursday 18th December.

My suggested solution (which was intended to ensure that only two teams (CRY and MCI) would have a BGW) could still be an option, but it may not necessarily be the most likely one after all.
Other solutions are possible, but would result in four teams having a BGW.

If that is the most likely solution, I'm a Dutchman (not Slot or Ten Hag though)

Why is that not the most likely solution?
Which alternative solution do you think causes less disruption?

They play the fixtures as set, as other teams have done before. I remember United playing 3 times in 5 days (4 times in 8) back in May 2021, for example.

You are getting "likely" confused with what you would do. This is the same mistake most make (particularly Ben Crellin) when talking about fixtures.

I didn't say this was the only possible solution, I just said that in my opinion, after also considering a few alternative options, it is the most likely one.
If you think my suggestion is so ridiculous, then what is a better or more likely one in your opinion?

                      *The (lazy) BBC/Dale Johnson assumption
*The QF being played on the 23rd December
*The QF being played when the first leg of the semi finals are played

These are all far more likely than your suggestion (which I didn't say was ridiculous btw).

Even the FPL Twitter "postpone 2 PL games to play the QF at the weekend" (which is now heavily being backtracked) is more likely.

The Carabou quarter-finals are to be played in the week beginning 15th December, so why shouldn't it be played on the 15th?

Semenyo scored a brace against the reigning league champions so it isn’t above the realms of possibility that he could do the same to an out of sorts City, just sayin’.
