The first Digest of the season finds us purring over Chelsea’s new Belgian, throwing admiring glances in the direction of the Liberty Stadium and daring to question Fantasy royalty…

The Player

Eden Hazard is proving impossible to ignore. His first Premier League from the spot against Newcastle represented a milestone and yet Hazard had already cemented a place on our watchlists with a string of assists amidst two dazzling displays prior to Saturday’s game. Six assists in total have lifted Hazard to the top of the points rankings across the games and have left us in little doubt that the Belgian is a rare talent with Fantasy points simply spilling from him.

Hazard always had the potential to establish himself as a Fantasy darling. He arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of a season for Lille which had seem him fetch 20 goals and 15 assists; clearly that signposted him as a player who could deliver returns on all fronts.

Few will have anticipated the impact that Hazard has made, however. So much is made of the pace and power of the Premier League and yet Hazard’s transition from Ligue 1 has been seamless – his productivity in England similarly spectacular.

Despite facing a blank in Gameweek 3, Hazard goes on attracting new suitors – Fantasy managers intent on benching their new capture, rather than risk his price escalating beyond affordable levels. Those without Hazard at this moment in time will be looking at their budget with some concern, knowing full well that he has become the first player to emerge as an “essential”.

While Fernando Torres does all he can to present an alternative option amongst Chelsea’s new attacking verve, Hazard looks to be the real prize, freeing up a precious forward slot in the process.

The Team

Eight goals scored, none conceded. Against that backdrop, Michael Laudrup’s Swansea are maintaining their expansive football of last season and have added a cutting edge. The goals are flowing at one end, while Michel Vorm remains a formidable barrier in front of a settled and assured back four at the other.

Laudrup’s side have surprised me. I saw a transition phase, a period of settling in while Laudrup’s new signings gelled and the hangover from the departure of Joe Allen and Gylfi Sigurdsson subsided. Neither have surfaced; instead Laudrup appears to have injected new spirit and conjured tactical tweaks that have allowed both Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge to become key figures, rather than peripheral touchline huggers.

Elsewhere, Angel Rangel scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, helping him to the top scoring mantle in the Gameweek. A polished and skillful full-back, we’ve long backed his potential as a Fantasy asset and the weekend showing may well, at last, be evidence of that materialising. Again, we perhaps only have to look to the belief and systems implemented by Laudrup to find the catalyst for such an upturn.

The Talking Point

It’s ironic that, over the past twelve months, Robin Van Persie has presented Fantasy managers with security, an assurance that, above all others, he’s the best source of returns in a given Gameweek. And yet, Saturday’s first start in United colours, capped by his fine strike after just 10 minutes, has now created uncertainty and insecurity. Fantasy managers will be processing their thoughts, pondering if they can afford to get him or, indeed, afford to be without him.

Van Persie’s price tag is, without question, inflated to the extent that his value – points per million – is a concern. Personally I’ve no argument that Van Persie is overpriced given that his chances of replicating the form that earned him such a price tag look remote.

Having said that, the true value of Van Persie is that he solves the Captaincy conundrum week after week. Certainly, looking at Gameweek 3 ahead, with Chelsea’s Hazard and Torres out of the equation, Van Persie’s appeal and potential impact as an unlikely differential captain, is strong.

Thankfully, for those looking to bide their time, Carlos Tevez has the fixture and the form to present a solution but Van Persie proved last season that his return rate away from home can surpass all others – even an in-form Tevez. That consideration, together with the fact that Van Persie will likely assume spot-kick duties with Wayne Rooney sidelined, could well tip the balance. Indeed, those questioning the merits of Van Persie only have to ponder just how many of those with Wildcards active are set to go forward without the United striker. We’d wager not too many.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I knee jerked and done my other two transfers before price rises & drops (Tevez & Pienaar in, Ramires & Rooney out).

Is it worth moving Torres out for RVP for a 4 point hit? At the moment i have the exact right amount of money. But then the week after i won't be able to move Hazard in for Bale (without another hit)

Is there a site where price changes are monitored?

If you already have strong 11 players to play, -8 pts hit might be too much. I also think Torres will be good for the following weeks too.. Anyway, if you believe RvP will explode, the hit could be justified.

cheers for the site. I just think RVP is overpriced and despite being the man last year he only had one good week so far, but if he is your capt more often than not and scores points consistently then the outlay could be worth it

i would rather have one 13 mil player, for whom there is a huge chance to score even 10pts; than having two 7mils who have smaller probability to score 10 pts.

At this point, RvP only MUN striker, empty GW for Chelsey..... I think he is the right choice.

ha very true I was actually quite happy with my forward line of Graham - Torres -Tevez, but without RVP you feel like you will always be missing out, even his signing means you will have to cutback elsewhere

I've got a pretty big problem, at least in fantasy football terms! Here we go. Team is:

    Vorm (Federici)

    McCartney / Williams / A Cole / Clichy / Hibbert

Yaya Toure / Noble / Michu / Mata / Jack Cork

    Rooney / Torres / Pogbregnyak

Next week a MAX of eight (!!!) players could play! So am I right in thinking that I really need to wildcard this week?

    My new team would be:

    Vorm (Federici)

McCartney / Williams / Zabaleta / Danny Simpson / FIgueroa

Yaya Toure / Noble / Michu / Hazard / Fellani

    Adebayor / Torres / Tevez

(I know Chelsea aren't playing next week but they're the in form team and I don't want to sit by while Hazard's price sky-rockets).

    All comments welcome!

A note to anyone thinking of playing their WC ...

Last season, I watched Man United 8 - 2 Arsenal, having gone with Torres as (c), and I didn't own Rooney or Young. I was about 90 points off the lead in my large mini league, and some even suggested I was out of the running already.

I didn't panic, made sensible transfers, waited for the casuals to make a mistake, and by March, I was top of the league and in the top 1000 overall. Alright, my season petered out and I finished 2nd in my mini league and well out of the top 1000 overall, but my point is this - 2 GWs doth not a season maketh.

Exactly. I was about 1.5M till and 120 points off my rival at the end of GW12-13. I still didnt use my WC. I ended up at 10308 and won my mini league by 20 points. I used my WC to offload the evertorn and spurs players i got their double GW. I had 140+ gameweek and my rival 70+.

I need to get rid of Mata and Taarabt, I'm definitely getting Hazard in which leave me with 5.4m for another midfielder, best options seems to be Routledge but I already have Graham, wise move??

    Hart
    Baines Vidic Clyne Fonte
    Hazard Kagawa Michu Bale Guthrie
    Tevez P. Cisse Petric

not a single clean sheet was had that day. Not sure if I want to get RVP in for a 8 point hit by:

    Hart>Vorm
    Vidic>Jenkinson
    Cisse>RVP

but idk, I have feeling Cisse could explode in his next game, plus Hart and Vidic SHOULD start getting some clean sheets. wat to do?

    Hi guys.I need some help.I didn't use my wildcard yet and my team for GW3 looks like this;

    Friedel

    Rangel-Zabaleta-Demel

    Yaya-Bale-Michu-Dyer-Kagawa

    Tevez – Petric

    Sub: Schwarzer,Cullar,( Cole,Torres)

    I want to do this:

    No transfers in GW3

Bale->Hazard GW4(probably he will rich 10.0m but I have 0,5m in the bank)

and another free transfer ( I want to get Pienaar or Fellani)

My dilemma is : How can I install Everton player in to my team???or maybe I do not need to do this?Any suggestions very welcome. Thanks in advance.

I've been on here a couple of times mentioning
Bertrand, i know he's got a blank next week and
his minutes might be hard to predict but so far
he's played two out of three for Chelsea and he's
been in mid field, so it's a Chelsea defender playing
    as a mid for 4.5M.

    On my watchlist for sure.

Bear in mind that Marin is currently injured and Oscar is just settling in. Imagine Bertrand's midfield minutes to be at a minimum. Just my opinion though.

Going off Rangel's last season, I'm thinking his start this season is above the norm and I'm expecting his scores to normalize in the next few weeks.

He got 0 goals and 4 assists last season. Is he doing anything different this season to make him more likely to score more than his current single goal?
