The first Digest of the season finds us purring over Chelsea’s new Belgian, throwing admiring glances in the direction of the Liberty Stadium and daring to question Fantasy royalty…

The Player

Eden Hazard is proving impossible to ignore. His first Premier League from the spot against Newcastle represented a milestone and yet Hazard had already cemented a place on our watchlists with a string of assists amidst two dazzling displays prior to Saturday’s game. Six assists in total have lifted Hazard to the top of the points rankings across the games and have left us in little doubt that the Belgian is a rare talent with Fantasy points simply spilling from him.

Hazard always had the potential to establish himself as a Fantasy darling. He arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of a season for Lille which had seem him fetch 20 goals and 15 assists; clearly that signposted him as a player who could deliver returns on all fronts.

Few will have anticipated the impact that Hazard has made, however. So much is made of the pace and power of the Premier League and yet Hazard’s transition from Ligue 1 has been seamless – his productivity in England similarly spectacular.

Despite facing a blank in Gameweek 3, Hazard goes on attracting new suitors – Fantasy managers intent on benching their new capture, rather than risk his price escalating beyond affordable levels. Those without Hazard at this moment in time will be looking at their budget with some concern, knowing full well that he has become the first player to emerge as an “essential”.

While Fernando Torres does all he can to present an alternative option amongst Chelsea’s new attacking verve, Hazard looks to be the real prize, freeing up a precious forward slot in the process.

The Team

Eight goals scored, none conceded. Against that backdrop, Michael Laudrup’s Swansea are maintaining their expansive football of last season and have added a cutting edge. The goals are flowing at one end, while Michel Vorm remains a formidable barrier in front of a settled and assured back four at the other.

Laudrup’s side have surprised me. I saw a transition phase, a period of settling in while Laudrup’s new signings gelled and the hangover from the departure of Joe Allen and Gylfi Sigurdsson subsided. Neither have surfaced; instead Laudrup appears to have injected new spirit and conjured tactical tweaks that have allowed both Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge to become key figures, rather than peripheral touchline huggers.

Elsewhere, Angel Rangel scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, helping him to the top scoring mantle in the Gameweek. A polished and skillful full-back, we’ve long backed his potential as a Fantasy asset and the weekend showing may well, at last, be evidence of that materialising. Again, we perhaps only have to look to the belief and systems implemented by Laudrup to find the catalyst for such an upturn.

The Talking Point

It’s ironic that, over the past twelve months, Robin Van Persie has presented Fantasy managers with security, an assurance that, above all others, he’s the best source of returns in a given Gameweek. And yet, Saturday’s first start in United colours, capped by his fine strike after just 10 minutes, has now created uncertainty and insecurity. Fantasy managers will be processing their thoughts, pondering if they can afford to get him or, indeed, afford to be without him.

Van Persie’s price tag is, without question, inflated to the extent that his value – points per million – is a concern. Personally I’ve no argument that Van Persie is overpriced given that his chances of replicating the form that earned him such a price tag look remote.

Having said that, the true value of Van Persie is that he solves the Captaincy conundrum week after week. Certainly, looking at Gameweek 3 ahead, with Chelsea’s Hazard and Torres out of the equation, Van Persie’s appeal and potential impact as an unlikely differential captain, is strong.

Thankfully, for those looking to bide their time, Carlos Tevez has the fixture and the form to present a solution but Van Persie proved last season that his return rate away from home can surpass all others – even an in-form Tevez. That consideration, together with the fact that Van Persie will likely assume spot-kick duties with Wayne Rooney sidelined, could well tip the balance. Indeed, those questioning the merits of Van Persie only have to ponder just how many of those with Wildcards active are set to go forward without the United striker. We’d wager not too many.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Use my Wild Card or not....that is the question?

I have $1.5 Mil in the bank ($98.8M team value)

Main concerns: acquire Hazard, United Coverage (RVP tempting), etc.

    Friedel-Federici

    A.Cole Lescott Hangeland Demel Clyne

    Bale Mata Noble Cazorla Guthrie

    Torres Tevez Graham

I was thinking of doing that. I'm kicking myself because I decided to go with Mata > Hazard to start the season...

Should I move any of my forwards...i.e Torres?

Will.I.Am Shakespeare? It's a very personal choice, but if you haven't used it yet this week, I'd probably wait till next. Hazard, RVP and Co. have already started rising but their could be a new crop of bandwagons to jump on next week.

It's that or take a hit. I see you have 5 DGWers still, but swapping Mata out for someone who plays GW3 would give you 11 starters and you could get Hazard in the following week.

Wow, loads of transfers being made so far. A lot of WCs played this week I guess, mine included 🙂

0.5M increase of my team last night and possibly up to 0.7M increase after tonight. If only there wasn't the 0.3M individual rise cap, could have made a real killing this week. Still not bad though.

I think the team I have is pretty balanced and very playable for GW3 so probably I will keep most.

        My current WC team is:

        Vorm Fed

        Baines Demel Rangel Jenkinson Clyne

        Hazard Kagawa Michu Duff Pienaar

        Petric Tevez RVP

If you are really determined to get him at all costs before he rises to the inevitable £10m then no hit is really too steep for you, is it?

Just get him in and be happy. He'll get those 8 points back for you in GW4 anyway.

Hey, looking for some advice from club fans or enthusiasts:
How will the Sunderland XI be altered by the new signings of Johnson and Fletcher?
Is Evans (UTD) expected to back in the first team from this weekend? With all the injuries in defence, would he be a good short term pick?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not a Sunderlas fan but I'm guessing fletcher will start most games, as will Johnson. With Johnson, McClean and Larsson in midfield putting in crosses/free kicks I can only see that boding well for fletcher et al.

The only question I would have is when will fletcher and Johnson be fit enough to play >60 minutes.

Bank 0, used my FT on Torres -> RVP. How to get Hazard in GW3? My current thought is Valencia to Kagawa for a hit then Bale -> Hazard with FT on saturday. Valencia could very well drop tonight (-97%) and Kagawa is definitely gonna rise, making that move impossible if I don't do it today. Thoughts? Do I even need Hazard?

And by "in GW3" I mean I'll transfer him in WHEN GW3 STARTS, not before GW3. Since he won't rise above 10 before GW3 has started, and he's not playing in GW3.

I'm WCing and have Hazard (before you ask he wasn't in my top 5 reasons to WC). While of course my default plan is to bench him, I am getting tempted by an alternative.

IF I see transfers in slowing during the week (possibly because people realize he's not playing) after his second rise for me tonight, I could sell him and pocket the 0.1 rise. Then play my best possible team GW3 and get him after that. If his price remains the same I only lose 0.1, if it falls I break even or better.

Might be mad but will monitor the transfer rate and decide.

I do stress this is speculation because the transfers don't lie, but if players start thinking about who to actually play in their teams this week and notice Hazard isn't, they might sell closer to the deadline.

I mean think about it also - the alternatives are A) that casuals are bringing him to protect themselves from his price rises which is even more ludicrous than B) they have no idea what the next fixture is.

Why is everyone suddenly thinking that team value is more important than points??

Team value doesn't matter nearly as much as some on here say it does. Some of the top players in the world last year had relatively low team values.

I know but this conversation happens every year.

People get smug cos they wildcarded early and made £0.8m value in a GW or something like that.

Then the juicy DGW's come in the spring and they wish they had their wildcard back.

It's a bit of a myth I think. Huge team values are often locked up in a couple of players (e.g Tevez, Hazard) who you would never sell. It is important to get rid of players who are dropping though, which is why I want shot of Mata.

Obviously points are what wins it in the end but team value is also a factor. One of my ML's last season I last basically because the other guys team was worth like 3m more than mine.

It was smart play by him and a bit silly/naive by me as I always waited until Sat morn to make my transfers so never caught rises.

I think the people WC'ing for value now are doing it because their teams aren't in the best shape. I think very few have exceptional teams/scores and are wild carding purely for value.

    A) Do I play Clyne (MUN) and not take a -4pt hit until next week

    B) Or, to I take a four point hit now and bring in a £4.5m DEF (habe been suggested Cuellar which I like with potential DGW coming up)

Either way $pt hit will happen to bring in Hazard next week

What will make you feel worse?

A)Do the transfer and VDV hits double figures and you have £9.8m of Hazard with no fixture.

B)Don't do it, VDV doesn't even start and Hazard gets too expensive leaving you high and dry for GW4.

Though HBA against Villa could be a huge haul, they look awful and he's been awesome so far against some good sides. Looking forward to what he can do against the weaker ones.
