Emmanuel Adebayor steps up his fitness for Spurs. Bacary Sagna expects to return before the end of September, Danny Simpson is ruled out for Newcastle while Fabricio Coloccini is a hamstring worry, and Brendan Rodgers is determined to be cautious over Raheem Sterling…

Emmanuel Adebayor could be set to make his first start of the season at Reading next weekend. The Togo international has been handed an intensive fitness program over the international break as Andre Villas-Boas looks to the summer signing to end Spurs’ winless start to the season. Adebayor joined up at the Lane without any pre-season game time under his belt and, as a result, has featured as a second-half sub in his first two matches. Jermaine Defoe’s stint in the first XI could soon be coming to an end, then, with a fully-fit Adebayor primed for a start at the Madejski match as the lone striker – with a mere 4% ownership, he could be a real differential ahead of home clashes with QPR and Villa in the next four.

Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his desire to protect Raheem Sterling after the youngster shot to prominence with a couple of solid displays against City and Arsenal. The Liverpool boss revealed

“I think with young players you have to be careful. They can be elevated above their station too quickly. That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated into superstar status. He was absolutely fantastic through pre-season. You have seen his quality, courage and attitude in the recent games – it has been fantastic. But for the moment let’s just stay calm.”

Sterling was lined up to feature for the England U21 side this week but Rodgers – wary of the hype surrounding the youngster – convinced FA director of football, Trevor Brooking, to continue with the winger at U19 level. With Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi edging their way back to first-team contention after injury, Sterling looks likely to be nurtured by Rodgers – an indication that his appeal as a cut-price Fantasy option may be a little too risky right now, despite his strong showings.

Arsene Wenger looks set to welcome back a couple of his injured players later this month, with both Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Frimpong closing in on returns after long-term periods of absence. While Frimpong is expected to provide cover for the reinvigorated Abou Diaby in the Gunners’ double-pivot, Sagna’s comeback is of more significance to Fantasy managers, with the right-back revealing:

“One week ago I resumed training with ball. I hoped to be back just after international break, but it will be too close. I missed have missed four months twice [in the last year], so I need to be perfectly fit.”

It seems likely that Sagna will miss the Gunners’ Gameweek 4 home clash with Southampton, then, but his imminent return will have Carl Jenkinson’s Fantasy owners on red alert. The youngster has started all three matches in the Frenchman’s absence and has picked up significant interest due to his side’s trio of clean sheets but Sagna will surely oust him from Wenger’s first XI as soon as he is deemed fit. Certainly, if you have Jenkinson at this point, he’s worth holding until Sagna is ready but snapping him up now looks a seriously risky move.

Meanwhile, Wenger has acknowledged the work put in by Steve Bould in helping the Gunners to three consecutive clean sheets in their opening matches…

“We have played two teams who didn’t really attack, but he [Bould] is doing a good job. We continue our training regime. He has taken over from Pat Rice for the defensive job where he is doing very well. Will we finish with the best defence in the league? I hope so.”

Alan Pardew is sweating over the fitness of Fabricio Coloccini after the centre-half picked up a hamstring problem whilst training with Argentina. His national side released the following statement on their website yesterday:

“Fabricio Coloccini has a hamstring injury in the femoral biceps of his right leg. He will travel with the squad to continue treatment with the team doctor.”

Pardew also received news that Danny Simpson will be out until the end of the month with an injured hamstring. The right-back was subbed off against Villa last weekend and after being assessed by the club’s doctors, went on to reveal:

“It’s a lot better than I first thought. I’ve never had a hamstring problem before. I just felt something bad and I knew straight away I would have to come off. But the scan results came back on Wednesday and it is hopefully three weeks, maybe four maximum. It depends on each person their body and how quickly they recover, but it’s a lot better than what we first thought. Already I’m walking easier than I was on Sunday, so that’s a good sign.”

With a trip to Everton on his Gameweek 4 agenda, it’s hardly ideal for the Magpies boss. While Pardew has Mike Williamson to call upon at centre-half, his right-back options are currently limited; Ryan Taylor is out with a long-term knee injury and with James Perch also a doubt due to a neck problem, Pardew may turn to Vernun Anita to solve the problem. The versatile midfielder filled in for Simpson at the weekend and could be an automatic solution if Cheick Tiote recovers from a calf injury to take his place in central midfield – the Ivorian revealed yesterday he is hopeful of a return against the Toffees.

Morning all, I'm on a WC and am mulling over the merits of HBA or Yaya. I have Tevez as City cover.

    - Fixtures for both over the next few weeks look similar - OK but not outstanding.
    - Yaya has had a great start, and I read here the theory that the addition of Garcia might allow him a continued attacking role.
    - HBA frees up a little cash, is on set pieces, has form too and gives me Newcastle cover, but is no longer part of a front three like at the tale end of last season.

I'm swaying towards HBA, any thoughts?

I really do think yaya is a terrible FPL choice - so lucky to have gotten goals/points this season and as soon as Aguero comes back he'll sit deeper and just be crap

Yaya plays in a better team, is more likely to get clean sheets over the season and more likely to get bonus points in tight games. Ben arfa is more attacking and will get more goals if he plays every game and costs .5m less. Yaya will hardly ever get dropped, Ben arfa will be dropped if Newcastle go on a bad run and need more defensive stability. Them the facts.

Here´s the propable wc team i'm gonna go with:

Really good side. I prefer Saylor/Ridgewell to Gibbs but you have Foster for wba cover. Nolan better points potential than Dembele but I still think the Belgian could do well. Good to go I reckon.

I think you can get better than Dembele for 6 - He really isnt an attacking player he is a CM and with Gylffi and Dempsey he may not even play week in week out.

Maybe look at Ramirez or Morrison or Snodgrass. Instead? As I type that neither of those players really fill me with confidence but basically I just don't think Dembele is a great choice.

If I'd swap Gibbs to say Saylor, I could do Dembele --> Pienaar.

Good team imo. Not sure about Dembele though, great player but he will fill the Modric spot and has never been a great FPL prospect. I think Dempsey will be the the best Spurs cover. -Listed as a striker on Spurs homepage.

Count (and any other Scots about) I posted is yesterday -

Road to Rio ... All we need is hope ....

Hope is like knowing that football
fans, Like the scarfs we wear
are made to be lifted up.

    Because our greatest ever glory
consists not in never falling, But
    in rising everytime we fall.
Confucius said that, or was it
    Gary Caldwell?

Like Hampdens fearsome roar, hope arouses a
passion for the possible. It helps us acheive
    the unthinkable -
    SCOTLAND 1 FRANCE 0

Hope is not caring if we lose every game
    as long as we qualify.

Hope is pricing flights from Glasgow to
    Rio, "Just incase".

But most of all, Hope is a path in the
country - there never was a path, But when
many of us walk the same ground, the path
    comes to existence.

THIS IS THE PATH WE FOLLOW -

    WHEREVER IT TAKES US,
    WHATEVER IT TAKES.

It comes from that memorable night in the Czech Republic. Levein took off our striker (miller id assume) and brought on Naismith (i think) and played a 4-6-0. Fletch was going off his nut at him saying he could have played up top and scored for us. Levein told him he was the manager and he'd do it his way.

Fletcher then went in a huff saying he would never play under Levein again. Levein said publically that the door will remain open to Steven for a year. A year passed and Fletcher remained stubborn to thats that.

I blame Fletcher and not Levein. I am happy with the attacking quality we have.

Aye he was called up by Levein and he text someone telling them that he wont play for him. All so petty.

I doubled checked the Czech game. We brought on Iwelumo on instead of Fletcher guessing thats what sent him over the edge.

    Morning chaps.

I originally was planning for WC after GW7 (INT break), but I'm now starting to have a change of mind.

I have most of the top players such as Hazard, Michu, Tevez, RVP, Yaya and so don't think I'll be able to profit that much more than I'll already be able to. Not enough to use it anyway.

However... with regarding DGW, wasn't it Blackpool last season that was one of the worst grounds, due to not having undersoil heating? I hear that every clue has that now and so the likelihood of their being matches called off due to a frozen pitch is much less this season - which equates to a less chance of their being matches called off and there being DGWs.

Didn't mean to be so harsh, just think how you deliver criticism can come across as a bit 'all-knowing', Jelly Harte and Boyce all have their strengths and you can see why someone would pick them. Don't know how it makes his team automatically unbalanced.

Sorry for being so blunt there, bit over the top.

What I do know is that you don't select Harte(limited game time...then you bench him when he is at home vs Spurs) and Boyce when he is away vs ManU/Rvp. Especially when you are on a WC.

                Anyway, I'm out of here.

For me as I see it, Wenger knows that with the loss of RVP he can't score that many goals and now he is more concentrated on the defense. Also he stated: " Will we finish with the best defence in the league? I hope so.”. So I see value and will invest in there defense. Carl is too short term and Verm is too expensive for now. That's why I am going with Gibbs.

dont see many assists coming from gibbs as like you say Arsenal wont score many goals from crosses from the left. It all depends on Verm's attacking returns who is the better value.

No. He's a different player this season. I don't know if it's because he's been shifted into another position or if he's just affected by the arrival of Hazard. He's also been subbed off in his first three games, whereas Hazard has two 90 minute appearances

He's not fit properly I'll give you that however he is seems to be playing more centrally this year. Being the creative center of the team. He's basically modric but in a Chelsea shirt which when translated into FPL points is nothing.
