Tim Krul is sent home from Holland’s training camp with an elbow problem. Gareth Barry is nearing a return for City, Brad Friedel is determined to hold off the challenge of Hugo Lloris between the posts for Tottenham, while John Terry joins Ashley Cole on the sidelines with less than a week until Chelsea’s trip to QPR:

Alan Pardew’s injury worries show no sign of abating right now. With Danny Simpson ruled out and Fabricio Coloccini a doubt, the Magpies boss now has Tim Krul’s fitness to fret over after the keeper was sent home from Holland training with an elbow problem. Krul featured for his country in a 2-0 win over Turkey on Friday evening but now faces a wait over the prognosis – with a trip to Everton up next, Fantasy faith in the Toffees assets looks set to grow.

Brad Friedel has spoken of his determination to see off the challenge of Spurs’ new keeper Hugo Lloris:

When I signed for Tottenham, I signed as a stop-gap while Tottenham looked for a long-term goalkeeper. Tottenham deserve a long-term goalkeeper. Right now I believe the shirt is mine to lose, I believe the manager came out and said that. If that’s the case then great.

Friedel was voted Man of the Match in Spurs’ previous game at home to Norwich, with a string of saves denying the Canaries a win. Ahead of a run of games that sees Spurs square up to (rdg, QPR, AVL) in the next four, the US international still seems to be in the driving seat but with Tottenham failing to register a single clean sheet under Andre Villas-Boas so far, faith in their defensive assets has taken a real dip, despite those favourable fixtures.

Elsewhere, Joe Allen is expected to be fit for Wales’ game with Serbia. The Liverpool midfielder missed the 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Friday due to a virus but is now expected to shake off any after-effects and take his place in the squad. John Terry has joined Ashley Cole on the sidelines for England’s match with Ukraine due to an ankle, with the pair battling to be ready for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR.

Zoltan Gera is expected to be fit for Hungary’s match with Holland – the West Brom midfielder was subbed off against Andorra on Friday with an Achilles knock but has since returned to training. Jonny Evans has handed Northern Ireland a fitness boost ahead of Tuesday’s match with Luxembourg – the centre-half picked up an ankle knock in last week’s defeat to Russia but has come through a training session unscathed.

Gareth Barry revealed he is closing in on a comeback for City. The midfielder – who has yet to feature this term for the champions – went on to say:

I had a double hernia operation which meant an initial four weeks out, but then I tore a muscle in rehab which set me back a little bit, but I don’t think I’m too far off now – touch wood! I’m just taking things one day at a time but I’m feeling quite strong again which is really good. I’ve had two outings with the Elite Development Squad now – 45 minutes against Middlesbrough and 80 against Liverpool and I felt a lot better in the second game so things are progressing nicely.

Barry’s absence – allied with Nigel De Jong’s sale to AC Milan – has handed Jack Rodwell the chance to cement his place as Yaya Toure’s central midfield partner in a couple of City’s games thus far. With Barry reluctant to put a date on his comeback, Rodwell seems set to continue in the first XI for next weekend’s trip to Stoke as City look to register their first away win of the new campaign.

Without knowing the exact figures, having Skrtel, Gibbs, BAE and Lescott all in defence looks like an overspend in that area - especially when only Arsenal have looked like justifying defensive investment out of that lot so far.

I'd downgrade Skrtel and Lescott and look at getting Jelavic or similar in for Lambert.

    Hey all,

Have been pondering my WC team all week and, agreeing with Forza's Ruddy choice (Norwich have been unlucky up until now - and I don't want Begovic/Jussi), have come up with this. Please rate it:

    Foster / Ruddy
    Demel / Cuellar / Davies / Baines / Hughes
Cazorla / Michu / Ben Arfa / Guthrie / Hazard
    Lambert / RVP / Tevez

McCartney might be a decent long-term solution. I'm not 100% sure on this but he looks to be the main option at left back for Wham so if he's fit I don't see why he wouldn't start.

Guys, I have Giroud (don't judge me) and am flirting with the idea of captaining him this week. I also have Tevez and Hazard who are two other decent choices for captain. I think it might be a bad idea to risk your captaincy early on in the season so as not to make a complete hash of things. But with both Hazard and Tevez playing away I'm not so confident about handing them the armband. Giroud however has a home game where most people are confident Arsenal will do well, hence all the people getting Cazorla. Southampton's defence also looks leaky so far. Trying to reason whether it's a good idea to take the risk on Giroud. It's not like he hasn't had the chances so far. Every game he's had at least one scorable opporurtunity, so is it worth it?

Having Giroud is enough of a risk already, I don't think you want to double up on the risk. Even Podolski would be a doubtful captaincy choice, Giroud is a big stretch. It's got to be Hazard or Tevez surely. You need reliable points from a captain

I'd feel a bit uneasy captaining Hazard tbh. Your captain should ideally be someone who can score a goal and he's only scored a penalty so far. That's why I'd sway towards Tevez being the safer option.

I hear this a lot. Torres scored an 'offside' goal vs Reading, Tevez 'lucky' goals vs Liverpool and QPR, Hazard 'only a penalty' - they're still goals and worth the same points regardless of how fortunate they were, so as long as these players are getting in the right positions to score then they're worthy of consideration for transfers and the armband.

Yeah. The real question is whether they can reproduce those situations, for which yes you turn to the stats to see where they're popping up. I'd say Tevez and Hazard yes, having watched every minute of Torres playing I don't think the team are putting him in those positions often enough. He's working for the team in fact.

              This seems correct.

But Torres has that unique potential, being the only senior striker at the club at a similar price to Ade etc.

I have half an idea to go with Torres for the next 1 or 2, then have the flixibility to go Kun or Poldi in one move.

If you're going to take a risk, early on is the time to do it. Also, most people who have him will be captaining RVP so you don't have a lot to lose. Counterargument would be that Tevez is pretty good away from home and having Giroud at all is a bit of a punt already...

Form ,form ,form.... Then there's the matter of confidence, or lack of it.

I get the feeling Giroud is yet to feel like he belongs in the big league, whereas both Tevez and Hazard don't question it, never have...

Your captain choice should start there.

He and the team will want him to score his 1st.

Poldi (rested) will be supplying him on Clyne's wing.

Hes the type of player who gets assists though. Kompany is far too expensive. Baines, Verm & Vert I like, but as you say you'd need to downgrade elsewhere if you want to afford any of them.

I think the only concern is if he gets the games. If he does then 5.6m is excellent value. The clean sheets will start soon and he can pick up the odd assist.

To me he is the obvious right back for Man U. On a wildcard and still not sure whether to include him, tempting though.

          The price is tempting.

10 points in 3 games (9 in 1) is about the level of scoring I expect from him. He's an ok option as long as the rest of the def is solid and able to cover.

i think there are better options at 5.5, and better explosive risks cheaper than that (jenkinson for one)

Nothing wrong with the pick, mind. I'm holding out for smalling's return.

Check his stats if your a member. He'll win the Pepsi challenge against most players, which I feel will turn into points sooner rather than later.

The main concern for me now (before a whole bunch of unforeseen concerns blow up in my face in the aftermath of GW4) is reducing Swansea coverage. I'm on Rangel, Michu and Graham now and that surely looks excessive in the long term. Probably Graham to go, but I don't have the money to get to Fletcher. Only 0.1 in the bank off the top of my head.

Looking at fixtures to Jan 1st I'd say it's only GW 13 & 14 that would be tricky. Up to that and after that they rotate realy well I'd say

Im on my wildcard this week and thinking of getting rid of Michu, who Ive had from the start. Is this madness?

I figure that midfield slots have become precious with the likes of Hazard, Cazorla and Bale all looking like they could put up big scores. I still need a slot for the cheap bench fodder in my front 8 so if I keep Michu it would have to be upfront. So it basically boils down to:

    A) Michu + Pogrebnyak
    B) Guthrie + Berbatov + 0.5M

In A I might rotate and actually play Pog some weeks but in B Guthrie would always be on the bench.

When I look at it like this it seems an easy choice for B but getting rid of Michu and about 0.5M team value seems wrong. Any thoughts?

I considered it but can't do it ... I think I'll be looking to get rid after GW 8 though, when their fixtures become significantly harder.

he's in my team as a last minute punt on WC, so far cost me 5 points in playing ahead of Demel but I'm optimistic. Tempted to play him this week over Rangel because United's defence looks leaky...

Agree. Your fromt 8 is where all the points are. I'd aim for two big defenders and upgrade Pog/Walters. If a 9m+ player goes crazy you have no easy way of getting them in.

I've played my WC so I'm messing around at the moment.

Podolski or Carzola? I'm thinking Carzola because there are lots of cheap(ish) foward options out there like Pog, Lambert, Graham, Berbatov, Fletecher.......

    Thoughts?

Oh yeah, Gibbs. He's pretty much nailed on isn't he? Santos hasn't walked the walked so far.....
