Robin Van Persie is subbed off at half-time during Holland’s win over Hungary. Shinji Kagawa misses out for Japan due to a back problem, Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Dzeko continue their strong starts to the season, while a Frank Lampard penalty saves a point for England as we round up all the main protagonists from last night’s international matches…

Shinji Kagawa’s Fantasy owners were handed a scare after the United midfielder pulled out of Japan’s game with Iraq. The former Dortmund man played down fears of any problem, going on to say:

“I felt a twinge in the back during practice when I was on the ball. I had some treatment but didn’t want to risk causing the team trouble by playing. Obviously it’s a shame I wasn’t able to play… It’s not that serious and I don’t think it will keep me out for long”.

Nevertheless, there will be concerns over Kagawa’s fitness heading into Saturday’s match with Wigan. Sir Alex Ferguson has been careful with his game time in the last couple of league games, subbing off the summer signing from Dortmund around the hour mark and with Wayne Rooney injured and Van Persie’s official prognosis still unknown, we face an anxious wait until the club releases statements. With a Champions League clash against Galatasaray the following Wednesday, Ferguson is unlikely to take any unnecessary risks.

The United boss also has Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez to travel back from matches in Uruguay and Mexico respectively. The pair enjoyed contrasting evenings, Valencia seeing red on 90 minutes in Ecuador’s draw with Uruguay, while Javier Hernandez netted the winner for Mexico in their 1-0 win over Costa Rica. Ferguson will now hope to get both back unscathed as he assesses his squad prior to the Wigan clash. The Friday morning press conference can’t come soon enough for many.

Branislav Ivanovic continued his superb start to the season with a goal and two assists in Serbia’s 6-1 thrashing of Wales last night. City’s Aleksandar Kolarov also played a part for the victors, providing a goal and assist in what was described in some quarters as an “inspirational performance”. Gareth Bale served a reminder of his eye for goal by lashing home a long-range free-kick for Chris Coleman’s side as a consolation. QPR’s Jamie Mackie provided an assist in Scotland’s home draw with Macedonia, while Zoltan Gera provided an assist in Hungary’s defeat by Holland – a foul on the West Brom midfielder in the box led to a converted spot-kick by Balasz Dszudszak.

John Arne Riise played a crucial part in Norway’s 2-1 win over Slovenia – the Fulham left-back hammered home a spot-kick deep into time added on to seal the three points for the hosts. Jonny Evans picked up an assist in Northern Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Luxembourg – the Man United centre-half teed up Dean Shiels to put his national ahead early in the first-half. Reading centre-half Kaspars Gorkss gave Latvia the lead in Bosnia but the hosts, led by Edin Dzeko with a goal and two assists, ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Frank Lampard saved England’s blushes with a late spot-kick earning a home draw against Ukraine, with Danny Welbeck providing the assist. Reading’s Alex Pearce climbed off the bench to net for Republic of Ireland in a 4-1 win over Oman; Shane Long was also amongst the goals for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side. Swansea new boy Ki-Sing Yeung turned in a mixed performance for South Korea yesterday. The midfielder’s own goal handed Uzbekistan the lead but he somewhat atoned for his error by providing an assist for his nation’s equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron were all in the US starting XI that sealed a 1-0 win over Jamaica. Dempsey played the full 90 minutes for the US as he looks to build up his fitness ahead of his debut for Spurs. A bench role looks likely for the former Fulham man when Andre Villas-Boas’ side travel to Reading on Sunday.

Seriously considering transferring in and captaining Nani.

I’m pretty damn sure he’ll start this week as Welbeck isn’t very good on the wing, Young is out, I personally think Kagawa will miss this week and then you have the RVP situation.

Plus he looked menacing for the last 20 vs. Southampton and apparently had a decent game last night.

Anybody else want to join me?

Scroobius, for all the sense you talk, this is some crazy risky sh*t, but you could be onto something, I just think a lot of people are blinded into believing old 'greats' can reproduce, like the way everyone captains Bale even though it's way safer to captain a striker.

Ive now been Hampden for both Scotland games. From an FF prospective the following layers were awful -

    Snodgrass
    Morrison
    Maloney

Stats favour these players but on last nights performance I wouldnt have any in my FF team. The only player (playing in the prem) that was worth noting was Mackie. Ive always been a big fan of him and glad his long term injury hasnt dented his ability. Unfortnately Mackie plays for QPR.

In short, I (as a passionate, arogantly blinded Scotsman) would recommend zero Scottish players for FF right now.

Yeah he must have put in 4 or 5 cross and found the man maybe once. He was awful mate. We played him over Adam for his attacking treat and dead ball ability he provided none of this last night. Admittedly Di Santo is probably a much better finisher than Miller.

In fairness, all 4 of these players look decent at their clubs because of the stake they have in their clubs scoring chances, so that makes them decent FPL prospects. Putting them all together does not necessarily make for an amazing team. And this is Scotland we're talking about, as a humble Ireland fan, I can say I'm used to seeing lots of half-decent players looking shocking once they don the green jersey.

Maloney = bargain in FPL because he's peno taker for lowly Wigan (although I like them and think of them highly)
Snodgrass = One of Norwich's attacking buys that they will hope will bag a few this year to keep them up
Morrison = playing in a form team as the main attacking midfielder

These factors make these players more than the sum of their parts FPL wise.

True enough...if you're wildcarding it makes sense to hold off ...but if he looks like he'll play then surely is the standout captain of the week. Wigan have a very poor track record against Man Utd away.

I want my team to be stable for 6-8 weeks after wildcarding and I just don't think RVP does that for me.

he's not even confirmed out and even if he misses that game, he'll be back the following weekend.

having bought him at 13.0, it will be hard to get him back once i ship him out too

Not sure. If he doesn't play this week he has 3 tough fixtures (on paper) But RVP can score against anyone. Even though i got him at 13, i'd only lose .2

If he is confirmed out, Adebayor is tempting.

@ Forca I think actually you have a point, since there are no below average teams in your group. Everyone can compete for that second spot. But that would make this more of a group of life like group A was in the Euros.

Croatia is the only word class team there, with Belgium still need to prove they can put 2 and 2 together. And serbia is no longer a force for a long time, people are mistaking them for good quality for all the big names they have.

For me a group of death would be where there are at least 3 world class teams who all belong in the WC. This group only has 1

Group 2 has Italy, Chechs and Denmark all teams who were part of euros and should be part of the WC
    Group 3- Germany, Sweden, Austria
Both groups would be better suited for the Group of death title.

Croatia is not world class team

we are just avareage i would say

Belgium is really impressive and they will be world class team soon

serbia is decent side as well

in our group everyone can beat everyone i would say

wales is the strongest team from last pot by a mile

just look at those groupes with likes of malta, albania, lethonia, kazahstan ...

I agree with your thought on Belgium, but I have been thinking so for a while now so I will want to see them perform before I qualify them as a top team in my head 🙂

Yeah well you still have a history of performing above average in big tournaments constantly so still at least a top 15 side in the world.

I believe the euro finals to be a more difficult comp than the wc comp, as some of the southern hemisphere teams etc are not in the league of euro minnows ,
It's just that 'They' have to be included.

They do pop up with a surprise now and again(south korea), and I respect that format so that every continent has representation. It is not really meant to be the comp to decide top 50 teams.

Because of the tension it builds in a lot of episodes, the way the characters have developed and the age old story of battling both greed and the temptation to be converted to the dark side.

The Shield basically about a special gang unit in LA police department that are corrupt.

First season is decent, everything after that is awesome.

      Band of Brothers

      Strike Back

are the first 5 that came to my head. Probably not 'the best' critically but I like them. Not seen Breaking Bad but all I ever hear is good things about it.

Breaking Bad is quite all right.

If you like war drama, I heartily recommend Generation Kill. It's about a squadron of Marines invading Iraq in mostly unshielded Humvees (budget problems). Based on a true story of a Rolling Stones journalist who hitched a ride with one in the 2nd Iraqi invasion. Even has a couple of the marines playing themselves.

In respect of the UCL does anybody know anything about Lucho (Porto) Ive seen him mentioned a few times but just wondered how attacking he is or anything else about him. I posted it earlier today but can't find it.

Yep, annoying for someone on a WC who was set on Baines and some cheaper defenders!

I read all the posts you did but you still need to be able to make the final judgement yourself. He is a big player for Chelsea. So glad I picked him over A Hole in Gw1.

Maybe, but i have feeling that Bertrand will play either:

        1. Instead of A.Cole (injury or resting for CL)
        2. In the mid

Latest wildcard team, with no RVP. Madness? My team value is rubbish and no RVP allows a better side.

    Foster - Bego

    Baines - Rafael - Hughes - Cuellar - Demel

    Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Snodgrass - Maloney

    Tevez - Torres - Jelavic

    Thoughts?

I'm not sure about Norwich and Snodgrass from a FF point of view. Rate him as a player but will he get you the points? It's a great rotation between him and Maloney isn't it?

You think Jelavic is worth the money? Everton might continue to share the goals.

Really like everything I've seen of Snod. Has looked like scoring every game and hogs set pieces.... but mainly its the Maloney rotation I like.

Everton fixtures look great for attacking returns imo and without RVP...Im in need of a good differential...?

Agreed they're not the best just now.... but rotation with Maloney gives me

WHM, FUL, LIV, EVE, ARS, WHM

which isn't too bad for 4th mid.
