It hasn’t been the best of starts for Aston Villa. Having watched his team score once in the first two Gameweeks, Paul Lambert boosted his options up front by snapping up Christian Benteke from Belgian side Genk prior to this summer’s transfer deadline. The 21-year-old, who moves to the midlands on a four-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m, is Lambert’s eighth signing since taking over the reins this summer:

Benteke continues Lambert’s recent policy of acquiring younger players from lower leagues or abroad, with a deliberate decision to mainly choose ambition over experience when restructuring his side. The Villa boss sang the praises of his new signing and revealed he expects the youngster to have a real impact up front this term:

Christian is only 21 years of age but already he’s an established Belgian international and he’s had a terrific time at Genk. He’s something very different to what we have here and that added dimension will enhance the football club. A young lad he may be, but he’s definitely a handful. He’s tall, powerful, he has pace and we’ll be stronger with him in the side.

The Statistics

The young Belgian’s career began in his native country at Gent where, as a 17-year-old, he made seven appearances in the 2007-08 season. Benteke then moved to Standard Liege, scoring three goals and providing a couple of assists in nine games before being loaned out to KV Kortrijk midway through the campaign.

Over a couple of seasons he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 32 appearances, but Benteke failed to settle upon returning to his parent club; Liege farmed him out to Mechelin in 2010-11 before finally selling him back to Genk before the start of last season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, Benteke delivered. Returning 10 goals and four assists from 22 appearances in his first season, he continued his storming form earlier this term, with three goals and an assist in five games before Lambert came calling.

The Prospects

Standing six foot five tall, Benteke offers the midlands outfit an extra edge up front, with a raw, physical presence that is sure to unsettle many a Premier League centre-half. He could be just the ally Darren Bent needs to spark his lacklustre season into life – with Lambert utilising Benteke in a similar way to Grant Holt for Norwich last season, Bent will be looking to feed off knock-downs and grab the goals to fire Villa up the table.

Certainly, Lambert’s selection policy so far bodes well for Benteke. Summer signings such as Matt Lowton, Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi have all started every match and with Nathan Delfouneso loaned out to Blackpool for the season, options up front are minimal – Benteke could well be ahead of Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor in the pecking order as Bent’s partner, with plenty of starts looking likely if Lambert continues with a 4-4-2. Service from the flanks will be vital – the likes of Barry Bannan, Brett Holman or Charles N’Zogbia will be tasked with delivering plenty crosses for the new boy to feed upon; Benteke’s aerial ability could perhaps boost their assist potential.

Priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Benteke’s mid-price appeal is unlikely to pick up many suitors just yet. With a point, two goals and no clean sheets from their first three, it’s understandable that faith in Villa’s Fantasy assets is currently faltering. The next six Gameweeks, however, sees the midlands outfit welcome (SWA, WBA, NOR) to Villa Park and with a trip to Southampton also on their short-term agenda, Lambert’s side are afforded a strong opportunity to quickly turn their season around.

This, from Facer, Re: RVP deserves it's own post I think.

"its difficult to say without, at least, rudimentary details, some sort of base-line. The physio would have taken a look at half-time, checked his active and passive range of movement and looked at his gait. They were only 2-1 up at the time, so i would have thought they would want him to stay on…on the other hand, with his injury history and Huntalaar, the supposed first choice! it could be a precautionary withdrawl.

If the reports are correct and its an impact lesion from an opponents knee, there should be only minimal compressive damage, no fibre tears, the sort you can sometimes ‘run-off’ in a match and, if so, he will definitely be fit for the weekend…I own him and I’m not worried at the moment…I will keep you up to date if i hear anything further…"

Yeah, I'll probably have Foster which is why I'm not looking at their defenders.

I think I'll put Wilson on hold for a few weeks until their fixtures pick up too, so it's probably 3 from 4 for me.

Not a bad idea, maximize your attacking prospects. I feel that you need atleast one top 4 representative in there. You could look at getting Hart, Cech or DDG in goal.

Happy with my team except midfield is a bit of a mess would appreciate some advice on how i should use my transfer

        Kagawa - Bale - Taarabt - Maloney - Noble

        Kagawa ➡ Hazard

        Or

        Taarabt ➡ 6.4 mill mid?

Pienaar doesn't look too bad, but we will never know as Moyes is cagier than the entire cast of Prison Break and Prisoner Cell Block H at a cage convention.

A Johnson says he'll be fit to play, so should be fine.

RVP we don't know yet, indications are that he took a thump and should be fine. Keep an eye on SAF press conferences, although he has a track record for lying about injuries.

SAF told us all that Evans had no chance of playing a game at the end of last season. Sure enough he played the 90 and kept a clean sheet. Taking SAF's words as true cost me a mini league, I won't make that mistake again. RVP (C) regardless!

          possible reasons:

          - the "two" links?
          -exceeding the word limit?
-foul language- okay, i really doubt that but well?

        Aguero injury update

This follows on from a previous post, I have posted as a reply.

From the link it would appear that Aguero is training alone with the physio, this suggests that he is not yet ready for first-team training. From that we can infer that he is not yet ready for ‘full-ish’ impacts, open-chain, rotatory weight-bearing forces or, indeed, the clearing tests he would have to accomplish to be passed fit to play.

The second picture in on the montage illustrates Aguero attempting to stretch the quadriceps on his right leg. The range he manages indicates 'full range of motion at the right knee joint with extended over-pressure’ this suggests further advancement out of the ‘proliferative stage of healing and progression into the, final, ‘re-modelling’ stage…good, the injury is healing...however, if you look closely Aguero is grimacing, this suggests that there is still 'end-of-range' pain. You can see the physio looking at Ageuro’s face (which we are trained to do to ascertain if the patient is feeling any pain…because patients don’t always tell the truth 🙂 ) This is important. The injury has not yet healed to a stage where intensive training can take place without risk of re-injure.

Another picture suggests that basic ‘ball-work’ (running with the ball, in a straight line) has been introduced, but without lateral or rotatory movement (keeping the line of gravity well within its base of support to stop the leverage becoming unfavorable. ie, so as not to increase the tensile torque, which would accentuate the applied forces at this stage.)

All in all I would suggest that Aguero will not be risked this weekend, and will be doubtful for anything but a cameo against Real (personally, I doubt he will be risked here) If he plays 15 minutes against Real, he might get 60 mins next weekend, otherwise, its next weekend where he’ll get a 15 minute cameo. With fitness and match sharpness to also consider, I wouldn’t want to be owning Aguero for at least the next 2-3 weeks minimum.

          Previous post

If Aguero was only allowed to start running three days ago, that suggests he is approaching the end of the proliferative or sub-acute stage of healing, the new collagen (scar tissue) won’t have fully matured to its fullest tensile strength and he still has, at least, ‘end-of-range’ pain. To attempt ‘clearing tests’ (uni-lateral plyometrics away from the mid-line, bounding, weight bearing twisting and turning) in less than a week, which he would have to pass in order to play, is taking an unnecessary chance. If he was my patient, I’d be very unhappy about passing him over to a physio with a view to playing him in a week having only started non-lateral impact training 3 days previously. IMO for Aguero to play in less than a week from now is extremely optimistic and I’d be very surprised if City were happy about this development, especially when it would appear that one extra week on top would make a large difference.

Bear in mind that I can’t find any specific diagnosis of the injury. (it was initially feared ACL anterior cruciate ligament, 6 months out and any other soft-tissue in that area would be tendonous, ligamentous or cartilaginous/meniscus all of these tissues have limited blood supply compared to muscles and thus take longer to heal.) I have also not seen his medical notes, which makes predicting a time-scale much harder. However, I can use when he started running and the time between the trauma and when he started running as a base-line and if he were to play a high-tempo, intense physical game for his country, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to suffer a set-back.

In fairness, from the sound-bites from Manchester, it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury and
considering the time-lines, fitness won’t be much of a factor. Ageuro has a genetic propensity towards mesomorphism and he will keep his strength well and regain aerobic fitness quickly. Match sharpness may take a match or two longer.

Barring a set-back he should be ready at about the same time as price parity between Tevez and Aguero 🙂

Does anyone know which teams rotate best with West Ham?

Thinking of a cheap def to rotate (home/away) with Demel.

        Cheers!

Stoke have perfect rotation, then Villa, Everton, Man U and Reading
