Stoke City added to their options up front last week with the intriguing acquisition of Michael Owen. The free agent arrives at the Britannia on a one-year deal, following his release from Manchester United this summer and is the seventh signing of what has been a busy summer for Potters’ boss Tony Pulis:

Upon completion of the deal, Owen admitted he was keen to strike up a partnership with Peter Crouch up front but, with the likes of Jon Walters, Kenwyne Jones and Cameron Jerome all in contention, he admitted he expects a battle on his hands:

I know a couple of lads here from past experience, be that with England or different clubs. Peter is one of them. He has done fantastically well since he joined Stoke, but there are many strikers at the club so I am not expecting it to be an easy ride. I will have to work to play any part and I am prepared to do that. There are a lot of top players at the club. I am just going to hopefully fit in well with the squad and have a good season.

The Statistics

It was way back in 1996-97 that Owen first sprung onto the domestic scene. Scoring on his debut for Liverpool against Wimbledon, his spell on Merseyside lasted a further seven seasons, with 216 league appearances harvesting 118 goals. Tempted to Spain by Real Madrid, he produced 14 goals from just 20 starts (and 16 sub appearances) for the La Liga giants before Newcastle paid £16.8m for his services in August 2005.

Then the injuries kicked in. Owen managed just 14 appearances in his first two seasons on Tyneside, with thigh, foot and knee problems all significantly curtailing his game time dramatically. His final couple of campaigns continued to be plagued with injury, with Owen managing 19 goals from 57 league matches before leaving the club as a free agent in July 2009. The striker’s time at United was again limited by injury, with hamstring and thigh problems scuppering his chances – Owen started just six league matches over three seasons under Sir Alex Ferguson. Over a total of 31 appearances, he scored five times before, once again, becoming a free agent in the summer.

The Prospects

Let’s face it – with that injury history, most of us will be expecting Owen to struggle for any sort of game time. The assumption that niggles and strains will get the better of him seems a fair one but if (and it’s admittedly a big “if”) he can stay fit and injury-free, his prospects may not be as bad as many fear.

Certainly, it’s a notion that Crouch has already entertained. The duo’s partnership produced a goal a game over 16 starts together for England and the former Spurs man reckons it could thrive once again:

The fact we’re so different is a strength – it’s the old Little and Large act. Whenever I’ve played with that sort of striker – Jermain Defoe, Kevin Phillips or Michael – it’s always gone well. He was in on Thursday for his first day of training and I have to admit he looked very sharp for someone who has been out for so long.

Any potential pitch time for Owen is bound to impact on Jonathan Walters the most. The latter, however, was the only player to start every league match last season under Pulis – a sign of his manager’s faith. Walters could move to the flank if Owen was selected up top, though, a situation which could see him vie for a flank role along with Matt Etherington on the left. It may well be Walters and Crouch continue up top, with Owen initially afforded the role of impact sub late on in games as Pulis looks to build the new boy’s match-fitness.

At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.6 in the Sky Sports game, Owen is certainly far cheaper than Crouch (6.5 and 8.8 respectively) and his presence up top would certainly dent Walters’ appeal as an out-of-position midfielder in the FPL game. With (MCY, che, SWA, liv, mun) to follow in the next five Gameweeks, though, the Potters are set to be given a wide berth until the fixture list improves – by then, we may get a little more indication of whether it’s the first-team or treatment room for Owen once again.

So glad EPL is nearly back. This break sucked, especially without having a transfer to make. Hopefully I'll have some fun with 2 FTs next week.

You should see the WC's 2 people in my mini league played before gameweek 3. Absolutely terrible. So I'm not worried about not having an ideal bench in this moment.

So it looks like Van Persie is fit enough to play, thats my feeling anyway.. the big Q is.. do we dare to (c) him?
He could start and play 60 mins, he could be rested anyway and possibly used as a late sub 20-30 mins if united are not winning.. I also have Kagawa, and my bench is chit... no FT left, oh the horror!

I am considering this too, but I really hate to take a hit for Kagawa now.. My plan is to do Kagawa - Ben Arfa, but it just feels like one week to early.. a hit and a bad fixture... Newcastle will struggle away to Everton.. I could do Kagawa - Pienaar tho and get Ben Arfa in next week

I'm consoling myself with the thought that price changes at an early stage are highly convertible to points. With Bale dropping once and Hazard twice (or was it once?) it would have been a 0.3 swing otherwise. Taking the 1m = 20 points assumption you could very roughly say that's equivalent to 6 points.

If you take advantage of the points. Plus i wanted Hazard. That said, Bale could just so easily explode.

Yeah, he's a good signing. As was Siggy, as was Vertonghen and (eventually) Ade etc.

The problem is the implementation IMO!

I think AVB disregards the rule managers refer to so often that it's become a cliche - build your system around your players. He seems to always do the opposite, he buys players for his dream system. And then horribly fails at man management.

Every week we have to deal with the reality that we will miss most points. You know for a fact that some player you've barely heard of will fluke 11 points or something, and then score 2 pointers for the next 25 GWs or so. And you know that there are probably at least ten players who are worth a hit, even for that GW alone.

I've marked with a * the players I think won't be scoring for a loooooong, looong time. I'd even add Clark and Walters to the list but don't want to be too dismissive.

You don't need an average of 140 points in order to the No.1 of the world mate 🙂

Actually every week if no emergency transfer is needed, I would try to bring in an infamous player (your * player). If I am wrong, all my loss is just getting 2 points and if I am right, that's fruitful points plus enjoyment 🙂

Haha of course, in fact an average of 65 is almost certainly enough. But you got to look for points everywhere...

It's just that transfers are so scarce right now. There's also the cost of the transfer to get rid of the * player. Maybe in the middle of the season when the template team is well and truly set!

So true, and ofc the hard part is to make the right transfer, thats why its a gamble.. but a hit could turn out very good... I just always have the feeling that its bad to take hits, but sometimes I do it anyway.. its good tho, makes me think twice about every transfer I make

Hey all. Trying to think of the best cheap (4.5m) gk combo with foster. Not keen to double up and currently my defence is:

Foster and Fed isn't bad at all if you don't fancy doubling up. I'm thinking about Mignolet and Fed, a combi I haven't seen on here at all. I'd even consider having Cuellar as well - Sunderland defenders have got me a fair few points over the last 2 seasons and they generally do well in autumn.

First touches. I overplayed a pass to Zabaleta and he took a HUUUGE touch. You have to be more precise with passes, Tevez sometimes took too much of a touch too, and defenders seem to be able to hold off attacking players better. Nothing pisses me off more than Ronaldo blasting past every defender and pressing the red button, then see 3 replays.

It just looks real clean. I really like the skill games that you can play before a match loads.

    Federici - Szczesny
    Hangeland - Rangel - Clyne - McCartney - Cuellar
    Carzola - Kagawa - Michu - McClean - Maloney
Petric - Tevez - van Persie

    A) Take an 8 point for Petric -> Giroud and Kagawa -> Bale
    B) Take an 8 point for Petric -> Giroud and Kagawa -> (Alternative 9.6 or cheaper midfielder)
    C) Or a 4 point hit and Kagawa -> Hazard (leaving Petric on)
    D) 4 point hit and Kagawa -> Hazard, bring in another striker of 8.3 or less.

Pretty sure Giroud is gonna scored a brace this weekend. Would love to have him.

As MJ6987 believes Kagawa won't be out for long, I'll keep him.

I can go from a straight Petric -> Giroud for a four pointer due to 3.8 in the bank. Giroud will be scoring at least 1, and unsure what's happening with Petric now that Berbatov is on board + West Brom form.
          Thoughts?

So I'm probably saving the transfer this week and hoping Kagawa plays - will be looking to bring in one of these 3 (for Podolski) along with Hazard (for Kagawa) next week - votes please....

    A) Fletcher (DGW to come, nailed on starter, good supply, v good fixtures)

    B) Berbatov (should start, good supply, possibly on pens, good fixtures)

    C) Lambert (nailed on starter, excellent fixtures, on pens, cheap enough to enable Zabaleta -> Baines in GW6)

    De Gea, Federici
    Zabaleta, Hughes, Cuellar, McCartney, Clyne
    Bale, Kagawa, Michu, Pienaar, Guthrie
    RVP, Tevez, Podolski

      Hi Jinswick

      A) Massive injury risk. Spends half the time on the treatment table.

      B) Mr.Inconsistent two years ago, and he's two years older now, playing for a much worse team. Even more frustrating than Ade.

      C) Probably the least talented of the three. First year in PL.

Has to be Lambert I guess. All could do well, all could flop.

I currently have the same dilemma , but with on a w/c. I'm currently going with Fletcher for the next three fixtures ( LIV, whm, WIG), then looking to change to Lambert (unless Fletcher delivers big time) when Sth's fixtures look very tasty.

Its based on the fact that he's already scored against both Manchester clubs. And is the focal point of, what looks to be, a very attack minded Southampton side

      Morning all,

The following players are currently sitting on 75-80% to rise/fall. And will have a great impact on whether I have to use my 2nd FT this week or not.

      Lescott (down)
      Ridgewell (up)
      Lambert (up)
      Green (down)

Personally I don't project that any of them will change before Saturday. But I would appreciate a 2nd opinion from someone? Cheers

This is my team without any changes
      Krul (Federici)
Kompany - Baines - Ivanovic (Demel - Fonte)
      Michu - Cazorla - Pienaar - Kagawa(Maloney)
      Petric - Torres - Tevez

I am considering Kagawa out maybe for HBA. Only want to use my free transferand would like to hear some opinions if you would be so kind.

I think you've got more chance of a cleanie. Monday night games can often be drab affairs but everton night games are special for the crowd. They will be right up for it so I expect efc to score a few goals against a weakened Newcastle. I'd say 3-1.

Statistically, RVP is the best captaincy option this week, followed by Tevez then Torres then a bit of a gap to a few others including Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud, Hazard, etc. Just saying this as I am seeing a surprising amount of people suggesting Caz when I would have thought the vast majority would have one of the first three.

Is it just a "hunch" thing or a gamble to make up ground?
