Theo Walcott wants a chance through the middle for Arsenal. Martin Kelly is sidelined with knee ligament damage for Liverpool, Roberto Mancini demands more defensive resilience from City, Nikica Jelavic is back for Everton in the Capital One Cup tonight, while Nemanja Vidic is expected to return for United next weekend…

Theo Walcott has spoken of his determination to nail down the lone forward role for Arsenal this term. Used almost exclusively as a winger by Arsene Wenger, Walcott admitted his future at the Gunners may be influenced by whether he can move centrally:

“Playing up front is important. It’s one of the main factors for me. I signed as a striker. I’ve learnt my trade out on the wing. Hopefully, I’ll get to play up front in the next few games. It’s frustrating being on the bench, but it’s one of those things I have to deal with.”

With Robin Van Persie departed and Olivier Giroud looking somewhat overwhelmed, Wenger has turned to Gervinho to lead the line in the last couple of league games. Although the Ivorian scored twice against Southampton, his overall lack of composure in front of goal is letting chances go astray, as seen on Sunday at City. Walcott has cut a peripheral figure in the new-look Gunners first XI thus far; he’s managed just one start and with Wenger utilising Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey on the right in recent games, his game time on the flank has relied on brief sub appearances late on in games. If Gervinho and Giroud continue to falter, Walcott – classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games – could be an intriguing proposition if Wenger grants him his wish up top.

Martin Kelly has been ruled out for the foreseeable future with knee ligament damage. The full-back picked up the injury in Sunday’s defeat to United and his absence looks likely to earn a recall for Jose Enrique as Brendan Rodgers reshuffles his backline ahead of the trip to Norwich. The Spaniard has been handed just one start this season and although he’s fallen out of favour with the new manager, is expected to get the nod at left-back, with Glen Johnson returning to the opposite flank. Rodgers has trialled Stewart Downing at left-back in the Europa League earlier this season, though, and could once again look to use the winger in defence. Rodgers’ injury worries also include Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini after both were forced off in the Anfield defeat – the club’s website gave this update yesterday:

“Agger….has suffered a significant bone bruise to the left knee. No ligament damage was sustained but further tests will be carried out before it can be established when he will be able to return to training. Borini has considerable swelling to the inner aspect of his right ankle though no fracture was detected on the X-ray. The club’s medical staff will wait for the swelling to reduce before an MRI scan can take place tomorrow to assess any soft tissue damage and determine when he may be able to return to playing.”

Any absence for Agger would see Jamie Carragher and Sebastien Coates vie for the central defensive berth alongside Martin Skrtel, while Borini’s situation stretches Rodgers’ threadbare options to the limit. Teenage winger Suso replaced the Italian on Sunday and may well be tasked with flanking Luis Suarez along with fellow youngster Raheem Sterling if Borini is ruled out of the trip to Carrow Road, although new signing Oussama Assaidi was on the bench at the weekend and is approaching full fitness after a recent injury.

Roberto Mancini has called upon his City defence to step up in performance after a third draw in the first five Gameweeks.

“I’m very sorry for the players because it was difficult after Real Madrid. But I’m worried because we continue to concede goals. We need to improve and we need to work. I don’t know why it’s happening but probably we don’t have enough concentration in some situations. In the last four games we have conceded three goals from set pieces and this can’t happen. I am frustrated but also the players are frustrated because if you want to win, clean sheets are important.”

City have shown little of the resilience that produced 35 clean sheets in the previous couple of seasons – Joe Hart returned 18 last time round but has picked the ball out of the net at least once in every game so far. Mancini is relying on his forwards to secure the points but with just a single goal scored in each of their last two, the failings at the back are proving costly. Vincent Kompany, Gael Clichy and Joleon Lescott have all been shipped out by over 100,000 FPL managers as a result and with plenty of budget-to-mid-price alternatives affording us the chance to free up cash, even the guaranteed game time of Kompany is not enough to stop him is fast falling off Fantasy radars right now.

Meanwhile, Mancini has pleaded with Spain to help him ensure that David Silva is not subject to “burn-out”, again stressing that the playmaker is currently suffering from fatigue.

“It is difficult for him – he is a human being and is probably not 100 per cent. We can only solve this problem by working harder – that’s the only way to improve. I don’t think he needs a rest. He played in the European Championship and after that he twice went travelling to Puerto Rico and to Spain to play Saudi Arabia. That may be the reason he was so tired – he is not fresh. Spain could help us with this.”

Nemanja Vidic is expected to be available for Man United next weekend. The Serbian was left out of the trip to Liverpool as a precautionary measure, according to Sir Alex Ferguson:

“He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break. Hopefully he’ll be alright next week.”

Prior to the Anfield visit, Vidic was the only United defender to start the opening four Gameweeks and with clashes against four of last season’s top five in the next five Gameweeks (TOT, new, che, ARS), his return will be crucial to a backline that has returned just one clean sheet so far. Similar to City, though, Ferguson’s rearguard is offering little consistency either in game time or returns – with Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines all racking up the points and Rafael offering a cheaper route into the United defence, Vidic is struggling to persuade Fantasy managers of his worth right now – he’s owned by less than 7%, with just eight points accrued thus far.

Staying in the United camp and Patrice Evra has spoken out about the increasing competition for the left-back role following the arrival and sparkling debut from Alex Buttner. Evra watched on while Buttner scored and assisted in the 4-0 win over Wigan but was recalled to the side for the Anfield trip on Sunday. Evra had this to say on the left-back tussle…

“It is too easy for people to say that now we have bought another left-back Patrice Evra will have to fight for his place. Patrice Evra has always fought for his place. If someone is there or not I will fight because you have to respect the shirt. When you play for Manchester United that is the big challenge. When I hear people say Patrice never had someone to fight him for his place I think they have bad memories. They forget very quickly how I got to become Manchester United’s left-back. I fought with two great players in Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre.”

Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tiote could both feature in Newcastle’s Capital One Cup visit to United this Wednesday. Talking ahead of the Old Trafford trip, Alan Pardew revealed:

“We are going to have make sure we can get game time out of the players that will need it. Colo could play, Cheick definitely needs a game, he was rusty, so I will have a word with the staff and hopefully we’ll get a result there.”

The pair have yet to play in the same side this season due to injury. Coloccini has been hampered with a hamstring problem and has played just twice, while Tiote climbed off the sibs bench in Sunday’s win over Norwich to end a three-game absence. As a result, Pardew’s side have registered only one clean sheet to date – with both back on board ahead of next weekend’s trip to Reading, the omens look good against a side that has found the net once in their last two games.

Seb Larsson is set to skip Sunderland’s Capital One clash with MK Dons this evening. The Swede was subbed off just after the hour mark at West Ham due to a “tight hamstring†and with Adam Johnson also unavailable, Martin O’Neill is taking no chances with his first-team right now. Larsson has filled in for Johnson on the right flank of late – the former City man has featured only once in the league since joining the Black Cats due to a thigh problem. With Fraizer Campbell limping out of the Hammers clash with a foot knock, O’Neill will be hoping his injury worries ease a little before Saturday’s visit of Wigan.

Nikica Jelavic is back in Everton’s squad for the Capital One Cup clash with Leeds this evening. The Croatian limped off just before half-time in the Gameweek 4 draw with Newcastle, though the Toffees haven’t lacked firepower, with replacement Victor Anichebe grabbing two goals in his absence. As David Moyes’ side prepare to welcome Southampton to Goodison next weekend, their Fantasy assets are picking up significant interest – Jelavic looks a real captaincy contender for the clash, but with Kevin Mirallas also hitting the goal trail in the win at Swansea, Moyes has plenty options should he decide to ease the Croatian back into league action on Saturday.

Nothing's changed - these we're the exact questions that were being asked before the season started. You must factor in that he'll start most games, and finish not many of them - and also that from time to time he'll come on from the bench. If you're not happy with that then you need to sell.

By my reckoning, im prepared to have 2 at most high-ish value players that have serious question marks over their time on the pitch at times like these (champions league games etc etc).

Currently i have at least 3 - Tevez, RVP, Hazard. And therefore I will get rid of at least one and probably look to shift another depending on the forthcoming game time they all get.

What has changed since the start of the season on Tevez?

Thats a genuine as well as a rhetorical question.

Surely everyone bought him hoping he would be the regular 2nd forward, but even then there would be rotation. I really don't see Dzeko/Balotelli taking his spot full time.

For those of us with Tevez from week 1, £1.5m to upgrade to Aguero looks like a bad deal (and having neither seems slightly suicidal).

Transferring in Jelavic just for one game?
That's 2 transfers you're using which I equate to 8 pts. He may score well against Soton, but he may score only 2 pts. Not worth the two transfers imo. Why not bring him in and keep for 8 GWs with the fixtures they have: SOT, wig, qpr, LIV, ful, SUN, rdg, nor.
That's 7 of the 8 games against teams in the bottom 9 plus Fulham.

So I had absolutely nothing to do today but kill time since the doc advised not to go to work. Thought I would look into the PPI scores. What served as a start was the Pienaar PPI rising from 10 to 17. Here goes whatever little I can offer:-
    A) Assist = 7PPI
Pienaar went up from 10 PPI to 17PPI only because of an Assist. This confirms it.
    B) Goal = 12-16 PPI (Probably different for CF’s, Mids and Defenders)
Benteke came on and scored against Swansea playing only 20 minutes and got only 12PPI. Sinclair on the other hand came on for the Swans in the first game of the season and scored. He got 20 PPI. This makes me think that Benteke probably has a Shot off target and Sinclair might have put some crosses in. But there is a possibility that Forwards get around 12PPI for a Goal, Midfielders around 14PPI and Defenders probably higher, just like how we have in FPL. I looked at the subs because players playing a full 90 would be involved a lot more in the game hence making it difficult to check their score.
    C) Clean Sheet = 8-10PPI
Saw the scores of the defenders who have kept clean sheets. The least PPI for a defender was around 12 but then I checked Metrsackers stats. He had 9PPI in the first game of the season including a CS. So assuming he did nothing in the game, I like the assumption of 8-10 PPI for a clean sheet. On an average, CBs with just the CS scored between 12-20 PPI.
    D) Shot on target = 2PPI
http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ says Fellaini had a goal and 5 shots on target. He got 27 PPI. So let’s assume 14 PPI for the goal and. That leaves us with 13 PPI. I am assuming 3 PPI for minutes and passes (No blocks or interceptions were mentioned) hence looks like there are 2PPI for shots on target.
    E) Shot off target = -2PPI
Easiest way to look into this was Defoe GW4. He had 2 goals and about 4 shots off target I think. Scored an 18 PPI. So that’s 24 for the goals minus the shots off target + the minutes.
    F) The Mini Points.
Reading http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ tells us that consideration for PPI is also given to the following factors:-
    a) Winning Tackles
    b) Interceptions
    c) Dribbles
    d) Blocks
    e) Clearances
    f) Crosses
    g) They also mention completed Passes. My assumption is 10-20 completed passes equals 1PPI which is why Yaya is always up there with the BPS as well. This works in Cazorla’s favor as well.
    h) Minutes played
My assumption is all these factors amount to 1 or max 2 PPI.
    G) Yellow/Red Cards
Dyer only played 14 minutes and got two yellows equaling a Red. His PPI was a Negative 7. Make of this what you may.
    H) Goalkeeping PPI:-
All I managed to get was this – “Ben Foster’s 5 saves (including caught crosses) was enough to earn a single BP as the Baggies earned another Hawthorns clean sheet.”
He got 19 PPI. So I am assuming the PPI for CS is higher for a keeper since he doesn’t have much chance to earn PPI otherwise. So My break up for Foster would be 12(CS) + 5(Saves) + 2(Minutes/Passes).
    I) Goals conceded:-
-2 PPI from what it looks like.
    J) Penalties Saved: Unfortunately none of the Pens saved Keepers have kept CS. But from what I see, looks like there are 6-8 PPI for a Pen save.
    K) Penalties Missed: Couldn’t figure what happens out here. Went through the Penalty misses. Not much in it. Probably a shot on/off target if nothing.

    SPECIAL MENTIONS:
Baines leads in PPI amongst defenders. Duff amongst Midfielders. And a certain Bulgarian beast has amassed 83 PPI in two starts. Highest forward is Tevez with 110 PPI but with a lot more minutes than Berba.
Small note from the FPL scout page on Berba-
Dimitar Berbatov earned the maximum bonus points (BP) at the DW Stadium with a strong all-round display on Saturday afternoon. Going forward, the Bulgarian produced 4 shots on target and an assist, while 3 clearances, 8 interceptions and a successful tackle are indicative of his current work ethic – he has now returned the maximum BP in both his starts for the Cottagers.
Also why Bale got max BP’s was because he was a LB in the first half. Which led to this –
Gareth Bale earned the maximum bonus points (BP) as Tottenham recorded their first home win under Andre Villas-Boas. Starting the match at left-back, the Welshman reverted to his familiar wing role after the break and produced a strong all-round display for the hosts. Going forward, Bale had an assist, 4 shots on target, a couple of successful dribbles and a cross amongst his EA SPORTS PPI stats, while he also made 2 successful tackles, a clearance and 4 interceptions to pick up the maximum BP for the second Gameweek running.

I highly recommend you lot keep a tab on http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ to get more of an idea about the PPI’s. You can check them in the player history under the ESP column.

Hope this helps. Do take it forward if you feel like. All assumptions only. Did what I could in an hour or so. Anything else we could look into?

What are peoples opinion on Michu? I've had him in since GW2 and consider him a great value mid priced midfielder but I've got the money to upgrade. I'm thinking Cazorla, Gerrard, Barfa or Yaya.

I'm not totally convinced about Newcastle and already have Ba, would Barfa ne Toon overkill?

    Berba v Lambert

If they were both the same price I'd go for Berba as he has undoubtedbly more class, however I really fancy Lambert to have a good season getting around 15 goals and at 6.1 he's absolute snip.

How is the penalty situation looking? Obviously Lambert will be on them for SOU, what about Berba, will he take them for Fulham?

Also fixtures slightly favour Southampton as they've played a few of the top sides already, but Fulham are obvs going to finish higher up the league so is this a redundant argument?

    Howard davis
    mcualy rafael demel cuellar davies
    michu hazard pienaar morrison cazorla
    lambert rvp tevez

Have 0.1m and 2FT so not sure what to do. Here are my options:
A: howard + cuellar + morrison >>> begovic + baines + guthrie (doing this just to get baines in)
B: davies + tevez >> begovic + suarez (doing this coz davies didnt start for saints so shipping him out and the same case with tevez)
C: howard + cuellar + tevez >>> mignolet + baines + berbatov (can bring in baines this way)
    D: morrison + tevez >>> guthrie + augero
E: any other options on improving my team

    All thoughts welcome:D

Iva -> Baines definitely worth doing as part of a 4pt hit. Good chance Baines will make it back for you this week, but he certainly will over the next 7 weeks or so.

I'm toying with similar issues, but despite their form, I'm struggling to justify getting rid of Graham, given their next 3 matches. Will be ditching Torres instead I think and hanging on to Graham until GW9.

This whole you only get half the profit of risers system is annoying. Never realized how annoying until now. Got Tevez at 9, he has a selling value of just 9.4 but would cost 9.9 to get back. Makes me feel like i have to hold onto him.

Yeah, its a tough one, obviously you can't get all the profit for each rise as it will make the game too easy but it feels like you are being punished for getting a player at the right time.

100% profit would mean so much profit potential on a wildcard - you could make maybe 0.5m per day just getting each day's risers in

Not strictly true - you should have increased team value more than the Johnny-come-latelies, so you haven't really been penalised. But I agree it does make it more difficult to cut them loose.

That will be a close one. Newcastle may beat reading but i don't think they will score many. 0-1 or 1-1 would be my guess. Of course Ba will probably score the goal!

Fulham and Berba are tougher to predict this week. They are strong at home so i would expect a goal against a Citeh defence that is far from settled right now. 1-2 or 2-2 (with at least a goal for Berba ofc)

It is annoying at times, but you've got to think that compared to someone who bought him a couple of weeks back at 9.5 you've got an extra 0.5 somewhere in your squad to go with the 0.4m profit.

That person who bought him at 9.5, if they were to sell him then they'd get 9.7m - so 0.2m profit, but would have paid 0.5m more than you to start with so there'd be less money in the rest of their team. So you're still 0.7m better off for having him than the latecomer, it just feels unfair because some of that money is "hidden" in the rest of your squad.

I think it's a good rule, otherwise the people who "lucked out" with the early risers would be more or less un-catchable... although there's skill involved in picking the early successes, the season shouldn't be decided in the first few weeks.

I have a general question to put out there. How do you decide on which posts you reply to? Quality / length of post? Ease of response? Depends on the user? Depends on if team linked/gravatar? Something else?

I feel like sometimes I'm on here for hours at a time giving my opinions on questions yet when its my turn to try and get some in return the response isn't always there but random users with no link/gravatar are getting a multitude of responses!

So help me help myself and perhaps any others who feel the same way 😉

Oliver Giroud is now 8.5. Lovely.
Yes you can laugh at me, but call this an educated hunch.

Podolski is 8.6 and assured of starts and on some FKs. Surely better option?

Fair enough. I think he's a great player and Arsenal need a big man up front but until he starts providing the goods think Pods is the way to go.

I have a few close buddies who are really into FPL as well and we used to discuss heavily what moves we planned to make and players we're keeping an eye on, etc but their squads ended up always looking like mine so had to put an end to that pretty abruptly!

In a way I have the opposite problem - I've been trying to persuade one of my mates (who's really into FPL) to look at this site and he just won't. He seems to see it as somehow cheating, yet week in week out he'll transfer in a player who's injured or suspended or has dreadful fixtures and it drives me absolutely crazy!

For GW7, who would you play and bench? (Well aware that this question is a good GW in advance, but I'm sorting out a short term transfer plan)

Ben Arfa (MUN) or Sterling (STO)

I'm looking to ship out Guthrie. Worst decision I made on my WC, so wondering if I'd actually play the player I bring in. Cheers mate.

Yeah? Bad decision imo but go with your gut i suppose. Just a thought though...Ben Arfa has been good at home so far season.

3 games played and he's returned scores of 8, 9 & 10 points. Of course United is a tough game but those are some impressive scores. Plus have United kept a clean sheet yet?

Current team with 4.0 in the bank.

    Foster (Green)

    Hang, Baines, Rangel, (Demel, Gorkss)

Bale, Haz, Michu, A Johnson(idiot!), Noble

    Ba, Tevez, Berbatov

Considering over the next few game weeks either

    A) Johnson, Ba, > Sterling, RVP

    or

    B) Johnson, Michu, Tevez > RVP, Cazorla, Sterling
(Michu to Barfa dependant on form)

      Noble --> Nolan

Johnson --> any good mid price mid like Fellaini/ Kaca if you can afford

Keep Ba and some money for RVP transfer and don't buy Sterling IMO

I can't get in RVP unless I downgrade somebody so I just feel like Sterling is best value for money especially looking at Liverpools fixtures and the way they are starting to play.
I also like to have at least a mil sat in the bank in case I want to mix things up.
