Scout Notes

Tuesday’s Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Two

Some brilliance from Nani and a typically cheeky finish from the “Little Pea” is just enough for United to grind down Stoke’s resistance at Old Trafford. Fulham claw their way back up the table as they brush past the injury-ravaged Baggies at the Cottage, while Birmingham do a job on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, despite another Charlie Adam inspired attacking display…

Alex Ferguson sprung a couple of surprises in his starting lineup – Twitter fan, Rio Ferdinand was rested ahead of Sunday’s looming FA Cup clash with Liverpool, while Edwin van der Sar was again missing in goal with illness blamed for his absence. Wayne Rooney was the big absentee however – the ankle injury sustained late on against West Brom kept him out of this one. Javier Hernandez took his place, Chris Smalling assumed the role alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence.

Once again United won the game in second gear – rarely threatening to put the game beyond Stoke, despite the visitors affording them room to exploit their talents – particularly in the first-half. Nani enjoyed a strong game and emphasised his Fantasy value by notching his sixth goal and eleventh assist of the season; with 2 Bonus also arriving at his door, this was the sixth time that Nani has recorded double figures for FPL returns.

Rooney’s absence had a predictable effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s goal threat. Our Members can see for themselves that the Bulgarian often came deeper to start the play and his “Touches” and “Passes” confirm that he was heavily involved. With just one attempt on goal however, Berbatov was again happy to forgo opportunities to score without Rooney’s prompting and feeding in tandem. Hernandez had far fewer touches, made fewer passes but had 3 attempts on goal, one of which was his smart, improvised finish for the opening goal which help to earn him 3 Bonus Points.

Ian Holloway handed a start to Matt Phillips who was rewarded for a number of eye-catching displays from the bench. Elsewhere, Blackpool lined up as expected in a 4-3-3 formation.

Charlie Adam offered some reward for the faith put in him by FPL Managers; the Scot dominated the game for long periods from the middle of the park and only the post denied him a goal in a performance that was again acknowledged with FPL Bonus Points.

Alex McLeish dropped Jean Beausejour to his bench and handed starts to Keith Fahey and Alexander Hleb as Lee Bowyer began his three-match ban. The inclusion of Hleb certainly paid off as the Belarusian grabbed his first Premier League goal for the Blues, after a Stephen Crainey error. Hleb obviously has bags of ability and could be worth monitoring as he looks to find some consistency after struggling with injury and form.

Popular FPL defender had a Scott Dann grabbed the winning goal for Birmingham in the 89th minute, lifting them out of the relegation places and giving Birmingham their first win at Blackpool since 1960. Dann has now picked-up 67 FPL points this season a good return for a defender priced at just £4.8 million and this hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst FPL managers with an ownership of 10.4%.

Birimingham recorded their first away win of the season, a record that Birmingham-owning FPL Managers will be pleased to see the back of. Alex McLeish was also unsurprisingly jubilant with the outcome

“I’m absolutely delighted to win and mostly because it was away from home. It means people will stop asking about the away record. It is only one [win] in six months yet it is three valuable points.”

Mark Hughes opted for Senegalese striker Diomansy Kamara to spearhead his attack and this was the only change to the Fulham side which lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, the forward took the place of Andy Johnson in the lone striker role as the Welshman once again opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Pre-match reports seemed to suggest that striker and Mousa Dembele would recover from an ankle injury and return to the line-up, but it appears that the Belgian striker failed to prove his fitness in time for the kick-off. Expect the player to be back in action for the next Premier League clash with Wigan on January 15, if not sooner in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Saturday.

FPL high-flyers Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland continued to prove their worth for both Fulham and Fantasy Managers by impressing a goal each. But it was Simon Davies who really won the FPL plaudits, notching-up a Gameweek total of 17 including: 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points.

James Hurst and Gianni Zuiverloon came into the West Brom defence in what was an otherwise unchanged starting line-up. They replace Steven Reid, who will be ruled out for six weeks after tearing his cartilage in Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United, and Ibanez Pablo who also suffered an ankle knock in the same game.

West Brom defender Marek Cech limped off after 33 minutes with a knock to be replaced by Nicky Shorey. The full extent of the injury is unclear and anything serious will come as a massive blow to a battered Baggies defence that, as well as those mentioned above, is already missing Gabriel Tamas through suspension and Jonas Olsson with an Achilles injury.

Official confirmation that Footballers are stupid gullible people from Darren Bent's twitter.

He still backs a product with no medical or scientific evidence of any benefit "100%"

    http://twitter.com/#!/DB11TT

Footballers who know nothing about science should not be allowed put their names to such nonsense.

And the strange thing is the general public will take his word over scientific research

Can't be any worse than Phil Tufnell's advert that started with "Loans, I know nothing about loans!" and went on to recommend the loan company that had hired him.

Theres a difference with Mark advertising paddy power which is abit of fun and Darren Bent "100%" backing a product which claimed to improve performance, health well being etc but doesnt and since they have retracted it.

They were claiming to help health and well being which is an industry packed with nonsense and charlatans trying to make money. Its makes me sick to the stomach to be honest.

The the blind leading the blind, and its misleading and grossly wrong on a massive scale.

Besides pseudo science is already a massive problem and its about time it was cut down on.

Pseudo science has been around since well, erm science. It's the dark side of the coin of proper academic pursuit, 'cutting down on it' will never happen.
I wasn't referring to the Paddy Power sites (which some would argue is anything but fun and could be life destroying) which dont bother me but to the other less reputable sites that are linked on this one. Anyway my point was that EVERYONE in any kind of media spotlight, particularly sportspeople plug, endorse or nakedly sell products.

Yes but Paddy power isnt telling you he can cure your heart disease, make you lift run further etc. and nor are any other sites ive seen linked here. They are merely games for money. And you are making a decision having all the facts regarding price, product b4 you commit.

This is a completely different issue Attila.

I know it is, I'm not getting into a debate about gambling at all - my point is that they are all snake-oil salesmen and I really can't see why you are beating your breast about it.
As for the other sites on here, well I've been told numerous times I have won an iPad or some such, and that my IP address is a winner etc. More misleading than exaggerating medical benefits. Their products do no harm otherwise they would be banned by the relevant authority, if gullible people wish to buy them then good on em. Placebos have been proven efficacious in a number of cases.

Unfortunately the legislation isnt tight enough to ban them. It crazy what you can get away with

They started off making claims, informed people complained and then the lawyers step in a change a few words. The the wider un informed world this is a great product endorsed by "celebs"

So offically on print they dont say it now but even if you read their twitter feed they have such nonsense "as ya good on you nobody can disprove what we feel spread the word"

So no they can get away with misleading the public and nobody will step in even when a raft of scientist have proved why people "feel better" the placebo effect as you mention and the fact any form of exercise will release postive inducing hormones.

Which reminds me I always feel "more energy " when im wearing my running shorts.

Yeah, that's the world of advertising unfortunately. To be honest i'm more worried about the extent to which we're subjected to adverts rather than the claims of the adverts themselves etc.

I think there is a tendancy for people to believe what they want too with miracles etc. But what are you basing the minority/majority comments on?

My experiences don't paint such a bleak picture.

Personally I've got Goldacre fatigue, he has a habit of focussing on pretty minor issues on which he can throw out a quick pedantic put down or two then move on. If the firebrands of rational evidence-based practice haven't got better things to do than crucify low rent hustlers like Gillian McKeith I'm not sure future generations will have much to thank them for.

By selling books, you raise the profile of your cause. Gillian McKeith might shooting fish in a barrel, but without attacking high profile figures he might as well be sat in the corner of the pub having a rant.

Him, Jamie Olivers only crime is that they care.....and their ridiculed for it.

                    Ps.

Id rather David Beckham deciding the Syllabus than the commissions monitoring bodies etc which currently hold sway.

And btw what exactly is your background? Government spokesman or Head of Journalist society?

or is that you Gillian McKeith 😉

Can anyone tell me what's going on with Kolo Toure.... I put him in my team and he seems to have vanished from the line-ups, and isn't down as injured or suspended?

Is he likely to play tonight, and if not what's the reason?

Toure is not a starter for mancini anymore, he has preferred lescott/kompany recently who have done well. I don't think he'll start again unless they get injured. It does seem that the best partnership at the moment is lescott/kompany.

It's not really my predicted team though... I'm just quoting what I've read on the internet. Applebonkers posted the same team last night too.

Wouldn't be a massive shock if Kuyt doesn't play though.

Your comment was deleted because you replied to MMW who replied to a moderated comment. Michael's action causes the problem where everyone goes "hey, why's there all these comments stuck at the bottom of the page!?" The only way to fix it is to remove any comment part of that thread, otherwise it just gets endless as all those comments don't thread properly, and get stuck at the bottom of a thread.

We've had an upgrade and some random words are getting caught in the filters, not everything is a conspiracy.

I'm not convinced. Still trips to Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea to come.

Would be nice though. Might stick a fiver on it.

Another wildcard question! When you've made your wildcard say on a Monday, but then wanted to make another transfer on the Tuesday, could you still use the same wildcard for that week?

Go onto my team, then go into the wolfe cup. Click on my dad's (Robert) team, then go into his fantasy cup opponent (the last one he beat). Look at that league (KKK). Every player in every team is black, basically...
    Kinda creepy?
