After a horrendous run of opening fixtures, Stoke’s prime Fantasy assets are finally being looked upon in a different light as the schedule starts to smile a little kinder. While many Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to invest in an attack which has scored just eight goals in the opening eight Gameweeks (Wayne Rooney own goal inclusive), the Potters’ rearguard could be primed for transfers in after a series of resilient displays.

Prior to last Saturday’s defeat at United, Tony Pulis’ side had shipped a mere five goals in their first seven fixtures, conceding just once against City and Chelsea in addition to returning a clean sheet at home to Arsenal. We’ve sang the praises of Asmir Begovic for a number of weeks – the Bosnian holds firm at the top of our goalkeeper Watchlist rankings – while Marc Wilson was the subject of last Friday’s Moneyball piece; both look strong value at 4.7 and 4.5 respectively in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

While Potters skipper Ryan Shawcross remains the most popular pick, with 18% FPL ownership, we’re focussing on an old Scout favourite – Robert Huth. Priced at 5.5 in both FPL and the Sky Sports game, there’s a reason why Huth is the costliest option amongst Pulis’ rearguard. The former Chelsea man’s eye for goal has seen him notch nine times in the previous couple of campaigns – the same number as Leighton Baines, for example, with his aerial ability in the opposition’s box always liable to strike terror into backlines the length and breadth of the country.

Granted, Huth has yet to justify any real investment, with no attacking returns or bonus registered thus far. As a result, he has picked up a mere 1.2% ownership, but his consistency over the last few seasons suggests he can always be relied upon; he has accrued 22 FPL bonus points over the previous two campaigns and has found the net at least three times from 2009/10 onwards.

The upcoming fixtures certainly offer plenty encouragement. Pulis’ side play at home four times (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) and also face trips to Norwich and West Ham, with perhaps only the Gameweek 12 trip to Upton Park a concern for those Fantasy managers eyeing up Stoke’s options. With the dead-ball delivery of Charlie Adam now added to the Potters’ ranks, it seems only a matter of time before Huth opens his account and begins to shine as a real differential.

Chances that Steven Taylor'll start at the weekend? :'(

Anyone ITK here? I suppose the Europa Leage game was just to build fitness and that Williamson + Colocinni will start on Sunday? Gah, my defence is a mess!

Long term I'm sure he's still the preferred partner for Coloccini but Williamson has done nothing wrong so there's a reasonable chance he might keep the place this week. I personally think Saylor will be back in the team but it's no more than a hunch.

1.3 shots per game for Huth last season, 1.8 the season before. Thats more shots than Vermaelen! Don't think another defender has come close in that time. But just 3 shots this season strangely.

So the question is whether to risk the extra £1m for Huth in the hope he comes good like the previous two seasons? Or take Wilson who is looking a bigger threat so far and pocket the cash? Hmmm...

Not sure I want to waste an attacking spot on a Stoke player considering they have been amongst the lowest scorers year in year out. So paying the premium for Huth is tempting as ‘attacking coverage’ instead.

It's a toughie, I think I'm going to pass on Huth for now then regret it in a few weeks when he's scored twice, that's what I do most seasons. I suppose a factor in the statistical decline might be Crouch - before Crouch joined he was the automatic target for all the set plays.

Good point about Crouch, hadn't considered that. Wilson's price will probably sway me, the more money for attackers the better.

      Look who's here 😉

I've gone with Wilson. Relying on a Stoke player to deliver attacking returns isn't likely to pay off. The difference between this season and the last two is that the full-backs weren't FPL-worthy then, which meant that only ShawX & Huth were worth having. Definitely changed this season.

The problem with your keeper strategy is that if there's a Stoke game called off you're left with no cover.

the rest of my wc team:

    Bego - Jussi
    Baines - Kolarov - Caulker - Wilson - Nelsen
Bale - Santi - Mata - Ben Arfa - Sterling
    Ba - Tevez - ???

Maybe downgrading Barfa to Walters because I have Ba also.

Hate re-posting, but got no replies, and I genuinely can't decide what to do with this one.

I was planning on Zabaleta – Wilson next week, and I’ve just noticed that Zabaleta is out this week. Worth taking a hit to do the transfer now? My instinct is no, but it would enable me to do another couple of transfers I have planned a week earlier, including Tevez to Ba, and Ba’s price rise is disconcerting.
The rest of my team is linked, and my other transfer this week is Silva -> Bale.

    Open Controls

I've done that transfer for free this week, before Zab fell in price.
Wilson shouldn't rise tonight, nor Zab drop, so prices aren't an issue, it depends on who you've got available to play:

      Hangeland, Cuellar, Baines, Clyne, Zab
      Silva, Cazorla, Noble, Guthrie Pienaar
      RVP, Tevez, Berbs

Your front 3 are great, but midfield and defence look pretty ropey as you'll have to play 2 of Noble, Guthrie and Clyne (I'd definitely bench Clyne) even if you do get Bale in for Silva (which looks like a good transfer)

That leaves your defence with Hangeland (rdg), Cuellar (stk), Baines (LIV)

Baines should play every week, so your question is will Wilson (SUN) outscore Cuellar, Hangeland or Guthrie by 4 points.

That requires a CS or goal from him, and no CS from the others. While Sunderland have been struggling to score, he is by no means a certainty for a cleanie, so I wouldn't do it personally.

If price rises were going to stop you doing it then maybe the hit would be worth it, as it is I wouldn't.

Rangel => Wilson for a hit??

    Positives:
I can play him gw9 (SUN) and gw11 (QPR) instead of gw9 Hughes (rdg) and gw11 Demel (new).
With Pienaar and Demel definetely out and not sure Guthrie plays, Rangel might end up to my eleven if I don't do this!

    Negative:
    -4 for a defender..

    Anyone?
