Twelve Gameweeks into the season and it’s something of an understatement to suggest Southampton have been far from impressive since their top-flight return. Nigel Adkins’ side have leaked goals in alarming numbers and sit second bottom of the table, with just nine points to their name thus far, but the past couple of matches have suggested they are finally starting to gel as a side:

Prior to last week’s home clash with Swansea, the Saints had conceded less than two goals on one occasion this term but have now managed that feat in back-to-back Gameweeks. Granted, a draw and a win in their last two is a little early for optimism but it is, nevertheless, the longest they have gone unbeaten in the league so far.

Cork v Davis

The upturn in performance has coincided with the return from injury of Jack Cork alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield earlier this month. Sidelined with knee and ankle problems, the former Chelsea man had previously failed to feature in the top-flight this term, with his absence affording Steven Davis the chance to stake a claim as a regular.

After Saturday’s win at QPR, Adkins was unsparing in his praise of the midfielder’s performance as he watched his side battle their way to victory in the crucial bottom-of-the-table encounter with QPR:

“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together. I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season. He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season. He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game. We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now. They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.”

Comparing the vital statistics of Cork and Davis in the centre of midfield, the former’s influence in front of the back-four is already obvious. In terms of involvement and distribution, he has averaged almost 20 touches per game more than Davis (80 to 60.6) and while the pair are virtually identical for passes received, Cork has been far more efficient in quickly moving the ball on, making 57 passes to Davis’ 46.3, with 48 to 39.8 successful passes per game.

TchsPasses RcvdPassesSucc PassesAerial DuelsTacklesIntRecoverClear

Steven Davis60.639.246.339.844.4%63.6%1.55.71.0

When it comes to defensive work, Cork has won 71.4% of aerial duels, far superior to Davis’ 44.4%, and has also bettered his successful tackle ratio, by 75% to 63.6%. He has made more interceptions (2 to 1.5), recoveries (9 to 5.7) and clearances (1.5 to 1.0) per game, highlighting his worth to the side. Clearly, Cork’s deep-lying role is not going to bring home the Fantasy points but it’s the extra combative edge he gives the midfield over Davis, in addition to his understanding with Schneiderlin, that has resultantly boosted the potential of the Saints’ attacking assets.

Southampton v QPR
Southampton v WBA

With the pair sitting in front of the back-four, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 shape is clear in Saturday’s match (left). Cork (18) and Schneiderlin (4) are content to stay deep, with Jason Puncheon (42) and Adam Lallana (20) pushing high up on the right and left respectively in support of Rickie Lambert (7).

Their previous away game (right) at West Brom looks far less defined. Adkins rolled out a 4-4-2, with Davis (8) more advanced than Schneiderlin (4) in the middle and while Jay Rodriguez (9) was fielded on the right wing, his tendency to drop deep and into central areas offsets the side’s balance.

Puncheon Comparison

The winger’s goal and assist at QPR, supplemented by a couple of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, has already seen his priced rise from 4.4 to 4.5 this week, with plenty prepared to jump aboard the cut-price bandwagon. Granted, Mark Hughes’ side are bottom of the table for a reason and while we’re reining in our expectations, the average position maps over the last two games, compared to his previous appearances, shows just how far forward Jason Puncheon has been in possession.

Puncheon GW1-10
Puncheon GW11-12

The statistics more than back up his displays over the last two. Although Puncheon’s average game time between Gameweeks 1-10 and 11-12 was lower (73.1 minutes per appearances to 95), the figures take a significant jump. Over his last two matches, Puncheon has averaged 40.5 touches in the final third, virtually double his previous 20.7. For Passes received in this crucial area, he is again just shy of registering twice the tally (23.5 to 12), while the same applies to successful passes made in the final third, with 18 to 9.7 highlighting his upturn in distribution closer to goal.

Puncheon GW 1-1073.120.7129.731.9139.40.92.6

His more advanced position has helped him to five touches in the box per game – he had previously averaged three, while his attempts on goal have almost trebled, up from 1.9 to 5.5. Crucially, it’s not all speculative long-range efforts, either; 2.5 attempts have been in the box, up from a previous season average of one. This equates to 17.3 minutes per shot, superior to the Gameweek 1-10 figure of 39.4. Intriguingly, the number of chances created has almost halved, down from 0.9 to 0.5 –now that he is seeing more of the ball closer to goal, Puncheon is looking to find the net rather than tee up a team mate. An upturn in attempted dribbles, from 2.6 to four, highlights a player with flourishing self-belief right now.

Again, it’s no surprise to see the winger’s display was talked up by his manager post-match:

“He’s been working hard. He’s had a good pre-season and again it’s about that consistency…he’s scored a great goal and could have scored three or four more. He worked hard for the team as did everybody – it was a real good all round performance, but there’ll talk about Puncheon and maybe one or two others.”

A Look at Lallana

Finally, we take a glance at the displays of Adam Lallana over the past couple of games and compare them to a select batch of premium Fantasy midfielders. While Puncheon’s weekend returns have picked up plenty new investors, Lallana has failed to produce a goal or assist in his last four but his statistics have been superb – although they haven’t been translated to Fantasy points, his owners will be more than happy to hold.

Hazard10453527113
Silva957153793
Cazorla735045371
Valencia936353341

Between Gameweeks 11-12, only one midfielder, Eden Hazard, had more touches (104) in the final third than the Saints man, who managed to equal David Silva’s 95. While the City playmaker leads the way for passes received in the final third, with 71, Lallana’s total of 58 is bettered only by one other midfielder, United’s Antonio Valencia, with 63. For successful passes made in the final third, once again Lallana features in the top five; only the aforementioned trio of Valencia (53), Silva (53) and Hazard (52) have marginally made more.

In terms of chances created, Silva and Hazard, with seven apiece, have bettered Lallana’s five, though this is still superior to Santi Cazorla and Valencia, who both managed to provide three goalscoring opportunities for team mates. When it comes to touches in the box, though, Lallana excels – his total of 18 over the last two Gameweeks is joint-top with Hatem Ben Arfa and leaves the likes of Hazard (11) and Silva (nine) trailing in his wake. Interestingly, Gaston Ramirez also impresses here – his 13 is bettered only by Lallana and Ben Arfa.

For total shots over the last couple, Puncheon’s 11 tops the charts, though Lallana and Ramirez sit joint fifth, with five apiece; further illustration of the plentiful potential from Adkins’ attacking midfield trio. Lallana’s tally of three efforts from inside the box again fare well when compared to our other featured players, equalling both Hazard and Silva.

With three home matches in the next four Gameweeks (NEW, NOR, liv, REA) Adkins’ side could well be starting to find their stride at just the right time in their attempt to climb out the drop zone. As the stats suggest, there is plenty attacking potential on offer right now as Fantasy managers look to freshen up their five-man midfields and if Southampton continue along the same vein, there may be plenty reason for St Mary’s optimism just on the horizon.

wow, 5th time reposting…..any thoughts on this team for the coming GW?

    Bego
    Clyne, Gorkss, Baines
    Bale (VC), Walcott, Barfa, Sterling
    RVP (C), Tevez, Berba

    Subs: Jussi, Fellaini, McAuley, Nelsen

    £0.3m in bank

0.1 short of doing McA to Enrique unless I take a hit and also do Barfa to Adam Johnson/Sessegnon
Or maybe I try and fit Silva in?

        Maybe transfer out Fellaini instead?

    Mata, Silva, Bale, Morrison, Guthrie
    RVP, Ba, Berbs

    0.5 in the bank. 1ft.

I plan to bring in some Arse over the next 2 weeks.

    next week: Baines & Berb > Marts/Sagna & Tev

I wouldn't get an Arsenal defender but Giroud looks a good option. I'd do Morrison to Sterling and then get Giroud for Ba/Berbs the week after. I also wouldn't want two City attacking players as one game against Villa doesn't show much.

Cheers Mull. Morrison stays. I'm in love and I don't want Sterling.

I'll look at the def situation but Arse have to improve with their fixtures?

I'm happy with Silva & Tev... I didn't just look at the Villa result. They are both world class and under-priced. We all go out own ways 🙂

At the moment I've got a horrible dilemma. Any advice would be hugely appreciated, as most weeks I have some clue of what I'll do, but not this one.

    Howard (NOR), Foster (sun)
Cuellar (WBA), Baines (NOR), Demel (tot), Hughes (sto), Rafael (QPR)
Bale (WHM), Taarabt (mun), Barfa (sot), Fellaini (suspended), Sterling (swa)
Tevez (che), RVP (QPR), Berb (sto)

I have 0.9 in the bank and from what I can make out, my options are

    (A) Play Taarabt away to United and save the transfer.
    (B) Demel - 4.9m defender, possibly Clyne or Cameron
    (C) Fellaini - AJ, Sunderland have good fixtures as well as a DGW and Everton's are tightening up.

Do you know what... I think Tarrabt is going to get bloody attacking returns at Old Trafford. Nothing against Reading(H) and an assist vs Southampton(H), but United(A)... he'll probably go an score a brace!

Logic says sell Taarabt and bench Fellaini. That's what I'm doing.

    What a day.

Qualifying for the second round of the CL looks positively mundane in this context.

Despite the win and welcome clean sheet, Arsenal looked distinctly less threatening without Walcott and we had to grind it out after a disjointed first half. What is encouraging is that we are finding other ways to score goals; in fact we are relying on the aerial prowess of Giroud who got both assists, the first clearly from a knockdown. We're not so far off Andy Carroll tactics after all 😆 but it's the variety that matters and giroud is really playing excellently for the team right now.

I still think Walcott has to return for arsenal to seriously be worth attacking investment against Villa. The more ways we can hurt them, the better. You can see what united bought over the summer was variety in attack and this has enabled them to score virtually anywhere..

Again, without Walcott, Cazorla was frustrated and deprived of space in the centre. He will continue to get fairly average points IMO - he won't be playing against ten men in a team that can't defend that often.

If we have Walcott's crosses (as well as Gibbs' and Sagna's), Giroud's knockdowns and headers, Caxorla's through balls and shots and Podolski playing as a support striker on the left, I see good scores ahead.

Ditto to all of that. Wenger stated he was going for a scan on the shoulder yesterday. I think. No news in the outcome. Given he said short term (he would surely say longer if it were missing the Villa match given his importance) and Walcott played on, I can only assume he is rested and fine. At least he doesn't have to run on his shoulder.

Just waiting for confirmation so I can pull trigger on Berb and Fell to Ba and Walcott.

I write these as much to organize my own thoughts as anything, no problem!

At the end of the day Arsenal need width of some sort otherwise the other team go narrow in two banks of four and stifle us. It would be great if other wingers could do that but Gervinho has been crap and Ox is getting back into his stride - plus he's destined for the centre. Walcott really is the best for width and crossing and it's a shame he wants to be a CF IMO - for us.

I slightly disagree about Walcott because I'm a bit skeptical still about him. He's done well but I'm not sure he's truly head and shoulders above Cazorla in FPL. You say Caz will suffer against teams that can defend but what about Walcott? Is he immune all of a sudden?

TBF we haven't seen enough of Walcott to make a quick judgement. I'm actually amazed as to how high up the field he plays though. He really is a wide striker especially as Giroud drops deep so often. It wouldn't surprise me to see Caz assisting Walcotts goals.

I can't wait to watch the Chelsea/City match this Sunday. Big fat Rafa back on the scene. It's going to be entertaining, that's for sure! I'm warming to the continual soap opera that is Chelsea FC. I have nothing against RDM but I was slowly starting to think he was a bit clueless. You have to feel a little sorry for him though achieving all that and losing his job.

At the end of the day, his decisions this week have cost him his job. Benching Mata and benching Torres. I was calling for his head as a Mata owner. You don't bench your best player when you haven't won a league match in three games. And all of that resting/rotation for nothing. It shows you how silly modern football can be sometimes. All these rotation policies but not enough time spent on getting the results that matter.

They suffered from not having a striker on the pitch. And it was blatantly obvious they were playing for a draw. If you play for a draw you kind of deserve what you get really imo. And the WBA...Cazorla travelled to Panama too yet he played all of Arsenal's game. Wenger has his priorities right...hence why he is a world class manager.

2FT and no cash in bank.
Haven't made changes in 2 weeks because I see no way I can except in my defence but I think the attack outweighs the defence.

Would Ba > Giroud, Caz > Silva/Theo, Haz > Mata be better in the coming weeks? Would like both a Chelsea player because all teams do well under new managers but also want Silva.
Also on Haz v Mata, Haz has been a lot more productive so I am not sure what is with the Mata love here. Haz will outscore him come end of season. Not sure if I want to let go of Felli against anyone, same the case with Bale. Advice on team?

Exactly what I touched upon above ^

It's such a ridiculous modern idea. That you HAVE to rest someone because you have 3 games. What about just starting them...see how you get on...and then sub them. Why rest them and lose a game because of it? (see WBA game, no Mata...no win)

It's interesting because different clubs/physios obviously have different policies. I know it comes down to the individual player but \i just don't get how Barca can play a mostly A-team every week but Prem teams can't.

I know, it discredits a lot of these policies when you see the best team in the world hardly ever doing it. I still think it's funny that Barca play Messi in every game in spite of these modern techniques/ideas elsewhere. It makes a mockery of these other managers that do it. Maybe it's a Spanish thing.
