Arsenal clinch their place in the Champions League knockout stages for the 13th consecutive season with a 2-0 win over Montpellier. City crash out of the group stages again after drawing with Real Madrid at the Etihad, though still stand a chance of making the Europa League. Elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers intends to play a strong side against Young Boys this evening, while the injury news eases a little for Tottenham…

Arsenal 2 Montpellier 0
Arsene Wenger made just one change from the side that thrashed Spurs last weekend. His alteration was an enforced one; with Theo Walcott missing out due to a shoulder injury, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started on the right. Jack Wilshere claimed his first goal since returning from long-term injury, while Lukas Podolski scored for the third consecutive game in all competitions, slamming home a superb left-foot volley for the Gunners’ second. Olivier Giroud continued his impressive recent form by providing assists for both Arsenal goals in a night that also saw Kieran Gibbs and Gervinho return from recent injury spells to take their place on the hosts’ bench. The latter replaced Giroud with five minutes left on the clock, while Cazorla was also subbed off towards the end of a comfortable win.

Crucially for Wenger and Fantasy managers alike, Schalke’s win over Olympiakos means Arsenal are already through to the final 16 ahead of their trip to Greece on December 4. With the next three Gameweeks coming thick and fast, rest and rotation can come into his European thinking as the domestic schedule picks up pace over the festive period.

Arsenal Starting XI: Szczesny; Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen; Wilshere, Arteta; Oxlade-Chamberlain (Ramsey 70), Cazorla (Coquelin 84), Podolski; Giroud (Gervinho 85)

Man City 1 Real Madrid 1
Roberto Mancini started with a three-man backline last night, with Gael Clichy missing out after picking up a foot injury in Saturday’s win over Villa. Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez also dropped out, with Aleksandar Kolarov fielded on the left of the midfield five and Edin Dzeko partnering Sergio Aguero up top. The City boss changed things round in the second-half; Javi Garcia replaced Kolarov at the break and Tevez came on for Nasri on the hour mark but, although a late Aguero spot-kick earned a draw, Mancini’s men are now out of the Champions League.

A point behind Ajax at the bottom of their group, City still have a chance to clinch a spot in the Europa League , though, meaning rest and rotation looks highly unlikely as Mancini looks to get a result in Dortmund that would prevent them facing the ignominy of crashing out of Europe altogether. Ahead of Sunday afternoon’s trip to Chelsea, Tevez’s owners will be happy with a 30 minute run-out and while Aguero played all but two minutes, a record or five goals in his last four in all competitions highlights just how much Mancini can ill-afford to drop him right now.

Post-match reports indicate Vincent Kompany is a doubt for that trip to the Bridge after sustaining a knee injury last night. The Belgian left the field for treatment and although re returned to the action and managed to finish the game, is thought to have left the Etihad on crutches.

City Starting XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic; Maicon, Toure, Silva, Nasri (60), Kolarov (Garcia 45); Aguero (Milner 88), Dzeko

In Other News
Brendan Rodgers has revealed he plans to name a strong Liverpool side for tonight’s Europa League game against Swiss outfit Young Boys. If results in the group go the Reds’ way earlier on, a victory at Anfield would clinch the Merseysiders’ place in the knock-out stages – a fact the Reds boss acknowledges:

“Out there, we never took Steven Gerrard and one or two other players but they’ll all be involved tomorrow night. We’ll have a strong team. I will make changes in the game – I have to respect that we’ve got a really busy schedule now over the course of the next 10 days. From tomorrow we’ll have four games in 10 days, and that’s a big ask to keep the same group of players playing in all of those. But it’s an opportunity for us tomorrow night, all being well we’ll get the result and if the other result goes with us, we’ll be able to navigate our way through the group. That’s always been our intention – to qualify. We’ll put out a team that we feel can win the game. I know what my priority is but I also respect the competition.”

Rodgers had rested virtually all of his first-team players for the previous European match away to Anzhi, with his decision to rest and rotate proving beneficial to the Reds’ league form. Now unbeaten in seven, Liverpool travel to Swansea on Sunday afternoon and, while the fixtures begin to pile up, a clash with his former club gives Rodgers the chance to atone for a recent Capital One Cup defeat. Despite his protestations over the fixture schedule, a full-strength XI looks on the cards for the Liberty showdown.

Spurs received some encouraging news on the injury front yesterday after Scott Parker returned to “light training” with the first-team squad after missing out on the season so far with an Achilles injury. Steven Caulker was included in the squad for the Europa League trip to Lazio and is expected to recover after missing out with a knock last weekend, while Andre Villas-Boas also gave an update on the fitness of Mousa Dembele:

“Made good progress with Mousa. We are building on his fitness. We included him in training. But too early for him to play tomorrow.”

Last night’s games were somewhat overshadowed by the announcement that Rafa Benitez has been named interim Chelsea boss until the end of the season. While there’s little doubt the former Liverpool boss will continue with the 4-2-3-1 system favoured by Roberto Di Matteo, his penchant for rotation will have Fantasy managers fretting – he famously altered his first XI for 99 consecutive matches when in charge at Anfield. Benitez’s brief will be to somehow rekindle the confidence of Fernando Torres and reinvigorate a side that has scored just a single goal in each of the last three.

The main worry is the attacking midfield trio of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar could have increased competition for places, though Benitez can surely ill-afford to do without the former two, given their form so far. Oscar, on the other hand, has kept his best displays for the European stage and has returned just two assists in the league; bearing in mind Di Matteo had handed Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses one and two starts respectively, while Marko Marin has failed to feature, Benitez has plenty of under-utilised options at his disposable if he chooses to freshen things up for City’s visit this Sunday.

Meh, not too worried. Hes 21, playing tuesday and saturday shouldnt be a problem at all. Besides, Smalling is starting at CB these days and Jones also got his first start in a long time against Galatasaray, so he virtually has little to no competition. With Nani and Kagawa out as well he cant really afford to play Valencia at RB either, so i cant see him not starting.

Gibson AND Neville were solid last year I recall. Gibson and Osman we'll have to see. I fancy Gibson is the best defensive midfielder of the lot and keeps Everton steady and tight.

Yeah, i agree that Gibs/Neville is a better defensive option than including Osman. Osman has been good for them this year though, even earned his international debut. Wont be easy dropping him. Maybe wide right again when Mirallas is still injured - but what happens if theyre all fit at the same time? Tbh i think Neville will be the first to get dropped.

I ve seen 3 Liverpool matches this year and I think his finishing skills are poor. But I understand the fact that he plays for Liv and he is too cheap. For the 6 next weeks though, I would prefer both Lallana and Hernandez but thats just my opinion

His finishing skills arent _that_ poor. You kind of have to take into account that he`s just turning 18 in a few weeks. For his age, he`s brilliant. Bargain price for an OOP Liverpool player, who`s probably second only to Suarez in FPL-terms atm.

Of course he is a bargain for that price and takes a midfield position. He is in my plans too if Suarez's price keeps raising and i cant afford him. But the question was for the next 6 that will probably involve a game without Suarez (which could also be an "easy" home game) I think other options might be better

it's not his finishing, it's his decision-making and instinctiveness in the box that he needs to improve, He's a good finisher but he sometimes dwells too long.

Yeah, this is closer to the truth. But that pretty much only comes from experience. And yeah, maybe Suarez wont be involved in one of the next 6. Probably, i should say. But that leaves more responsability for Sterling to deliver, surprising as it may sound. He`s already been handed a fair bit of offensive responsability by the manager this term, and i cant see that stopping.

In case anyone managed to miss it (and because I want as many people to read it as possible!), for the final time here's the link to an article on my blog about ‘group consensus’ as part of a series on decision making in FPL. Feel free to check it out, leave a comment and let me know what you think!

I especially enjoyed the last line!!! I also find I'm much happier when I take my own punt and it fails rather than listening the the consensus and it failing...

Yeah, like i said i kind of enjoyed it Without beeing condesending towards anybody, i spend a fair amount of time thinking about the game and football in general. Others that dont spend as much time and mental energy might take more out of it. After all, the things you wrote are all true and its all well written:)

      Thanks Tinkerman.

      Good article,
I understand that you wish most players should use their intiative and gut feelings,
But the herd mentality also has its place, as FPL is a game of luck,
I dont gamble, but any gambler or bookmarker will point out that if majority of people have the same gut feeling, most times than not, they are right, hence the lower odds for the favourite.

If you apply the same thought to FPL, for example, RVP is owned by many not because they believe he will out score all players every week but because, if you dont own him, when every one does, the chances are when he scores big, you will have a bigger dip in your overall rank, and vice versal. Thus people believe its safer to hedge their bets with the majority.

I also believe that price chasing as its own effects, but its another topic.

No, i wouldnt. Arsenal are averaging 3 goals their last 4 games, Giroud involved in around half of those. Everton form declining, and Jelavic 1 goal in 6. Also, Norwich resilience improving with 3 CS in the last 4 i believe, while AVL come from 8 conceded in the last two against top sides.

The big question is what would di Matteo do? 😆

I wouldn't lose santi now for bale - not until dembele is confirmed back at least. Spurs are not distinguished in attack and bale is only scoring on the odd counter.

Bench El Nino and that's what you get 😡

My concern's more to do with Santi tbh. Currently, it looks like anyone in Arsenal's front 5/6 can score. With Walc returning, he's also stolen majority of Santi's corners/FKs.

Bale is so detrimental to Spurs now with the pressure piling on AVB and with Ade out as well. Dembele should be back tho, isn't it?

I haven't heard about dembele's return! I guess it's tricky on caz. I sold him for fellaini last week because he wasn't involved enough in goalscoring but you know the inevitable happened. Im telling myself 10 man spurs was a one off though.

Yeah I've gone 3-5-2 instead with a lot of 'big hitters', however thinking about downgrading Hazard, upgrading Hunt and go 3-4-3 again.

The question is, how much will Benitez rotate his best players? Mata must surely be nailed on. OK, not for 3 x 90 minutes in 1 week but no one is.

Walcott did me well last 2 gameweeks and he's in super form. Arsenal's been free scoring since he came back. If he plays he's going to get points.

Just changed vc to Bale at home vs West Ham.

Hello everyone! With Gervinho back do you think it is more likely that Walcott or Giroud will have less gametime? I am thinking of buying Giroud but if Walcott is fit I dont know if Gervinho plays again lone striker.

Giroud should be on the bench if Walcott is fit, considering Arsenal's been free scoring since Walcott came back. Walcott's stats this season is reason enough, they're stunning.

Thats what I m also thinking... so Gervinho - Walcott - Giroud alla of them rotation risk. I ll probably keep having no Arsenal cover at least for the 2 away games so that i ll ensure which place will Gervinho keep and then buy one of them

Giroud and Podolski are in awesome form right now, as well as Theo. So those 3 should start if Theo is fit.

Gervinho might get an outing for 15-20 mins or so, can't see him get full 90 mins yet.

Are you serious right now? Giroud has been absolutely stunning last 6 games. 5 goals, 3 or 4 assists and all the games ive watched (which has been 3 i think), he`s been their stand out player. Gervinho will have to battle it out with Podolski for game time, and now that he`s scoring as well Gervinho might find himself benched for a while.

I know the stats you mention but Giroud did everything after Gervinho was injured. That is why i thought of getting him now instead of Ba for a hit. I think he might outscore Ba (Newcastle seems really problematic) even from this week let alone the next 6-7. I just want to be as sure as possible that he ll keep playing 90 mins.

Just a word of warning. In the days after a high scoring gameweek there appear to be so many options for attacking points and it seems like every player you don't have is going to run wild. Then once the first whistle blows the goalscoring reverts to the average and you're watching previously devastating players scraping out 0-0 draws in injury time. Be cautious!

    Guys help please

    Begocvic
    Baines Rafael Sagna McCartney Nelsen
    Mata Bale Michu Lallana Britton
    RVP Giround Ba

Next week… I’m gonna do Baines to either Garrido or Cuellar And do one of these

    1. Lallana to Fellaini 2. Britton to Adam/Sessayong/Larrson

I just doesn’t feel like number 2 will be a good move, because it’s like I’m spending too much on subs that will mostly play. I also got Lallana in for 1 week ago, so don’t know If I should give him more time but if Fellaini scores again… I’m gonna seriously flip out and be crazy

Anyone know who take all set pieces (penalty/direct FK/indirect FK/Left Corner/Right Corner) for Sunderland ? I think Adam Johnson and Fletcher is still not included in Set Piece Taker tab of this site. Thanks.

Random comment - Why the hell is McAuley of WBA worth 5.6m?? I can't figure it out, he used to take the set pieces or possibly most of them which would explain a slightly higher price - even though he hasn't scored or assisted since GW3 - but I have noticed for a good few weeks that he doesn't even take any set pieces anymore. All this and his price is still rising, can someone enlighten me??
