So Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Darren Bent from Sunderland for a club record fee, believed to be in the region of a staggering £24 million. The striker is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference this evening.

As we stated yesterday when the news of Villa’s bid and Bent’s transfer request broke, the move seems an odd one and not necessarily an event that will immediately boost the Fantasy potential of a striker who has dipped considerably in returns following last season’s 24 league goal haul.

Bent has so far recorded just 8 league strikes, despite Sunderland showing decent form and “overachieving” – the Black Cats currently sit in 6th place. Villa, in contrast, are languishing just above the relegation places having suffered a stuttering season with Gerard Houllier’s arrival failing to spark a revival in fortunes.

Goals have been a major problem – Villa have notched just 24 in 22 league games. This aggressive move in the transfer market should provide a solution. Bent has proven himself on the Premier League stage in previous seasons and, if Villa can maximise the service to him, he will surely start repaying the substantial fee sooner rather than later.

While Bent’s Fantasy Premier League price of 8.6 is unlikely to tempt immediate investment at a time when the likes of Carlos Tevez, Robin Van Persie and even Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, are attracting the bulk of the investment up front, Villa’s new acquisition must be watched and a glimmer of form could spark interest. Villa’s run of opponents between Gameweek 30 and 36 looks a particularly promising period for Bent and his new team-mates.

Villa are one of the teams facing a double fixture in Gameweek 24 with a home clash with City, followed by a trip to Wigan next week. Those fixtures appear to offer Bent an immediate platform to register his first goal in the claret and blue.

Fantasy Managers must also consider the knock-on effects of this deal; if Houllier can retain both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, then their potential to earn assists will surely be boosted by the arrival of a proven finisher. The same could be said of Marc Albrighton if he can regain a starting role.

We must also wait to assess the impact on the January transfer window. Only today there have been articles suggesting that should the Bent deal be completed, it would ripple throughout the Premier League and prove the catalyst for a number of moves that will likely influence our Fantasy selections over the coming weeks. John Carew’s switch to West Brom could well be the first development of many to emerge in the next week or so.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Just home, 3 questions.

1)I saw Tevez started, did he play a full 90 minutes?

2)How did Kolarov play? saw he scored. Without seeing the goal I bet it was from a counter attack.

    3)Anything else to note?

      1) played the full match, scored a good goal and missed a penalty
      2) He could havehad an assist or two, good finish with his goal
      3) Tevez's english is still rubbish, funny interview though haha

Still wary of O'Shea since he seemed to lose his place to Wes Brown for a little while. If I knew he was SAF's backup for Rafael then I'd bring in.

Don't know how anyone is going to know for sure before the double GW starts though.

he should only drop 0.1 so if you got him at 5.7 like i did it wont be any drop in your underlying value for transfer (still be worth 5.7) but i've got my fingers crossed he'll play against blackpool

Well there is my Villa cover for the DGW, Bent and soon to be Walker. Err. Now on Friday I am sure there'll be that press conference where Houiller says, Bent will make his debut Vs Man City, and we won't know whether he will play or not. I was all set on getting rid of him. And then this comes along, really unexpected. So Tevez -> Rooney?

I'd go with the ugly one. The fit one will admire you for it and like you said, she's having a party in March so you're guarenteed and invite! If you want to come across as a nice lad, go with the ugly one. If you want some action, go with fittie.

                I'd go with ugly.

I went with Ugly. They are mates, and the fit one has excepted that.

The fit one is now purposely staying behind with me after school tomoz as well. (I do fancy her btw, lol). So all is good. Oh and I am more than guaranteed an invite, were mates.

    Evening gents - wildcard imminent.

Could do this (have to get rid of Vidic though)and it'll leave zilch in the bank. Fifth midfielder will hardly get a look in. Hope to go into gw27 with 2 free transfers - will keep a check on Rooney & Torres' form all the way.

    Foster/Stockdale
    Coleman/Ferdinand/Kelly/Hutton/Walker
Nani/Adam/Nasri/VDV/Morrison (maybe for West Brom best games)
    Tevez/Rooney/Torres.

    Advice, comments & criticism welcome.

RVP may get 2 and 1 assist at home...

but will Torres get more....I just fancy El Nino to get one at Wolves and 2 at home to Fulham...

Torres will be lucky to get one vs Wolves. People always imagine Wolves are worse than they are. 0 goals vs Fulham...count on it.

Interesting. Not sure that Crespo should really be in there, seeing as his big money moves came in Italy. Also the Keane and Defoe back-and-fore transfers aren't quite bang on- Keane didn't go between Spurs and Liverpool for a combined £32m, most of it was unpaid fees that were cancelled.

The journalist has included the entire transfer fee, which means it isn't quiet accurate.

Anelka's agent (brother) has pocketed a few £m.

I'm just being fussier than Frankie Fusspot, the fussiest fusser in Fusstown on the day his mother-in-law is visiting.

        Wow £45m for Bellamy!
I know what you are saying Mark n Lard and you are dead right, however if you ignore the practicalities of cash exchanging hands (a murky business to fully evaluate with various fees going elsewhere etc) then purely as a relative sign of the players worth at the time of each sale then it's interesting.

Scratch Bent - I didn't realise he is 8.6m. A waste of money in FPL too 😉

Oh I know, but that is a blinding obvious lie. Kolarov's confidence will have shot up now, I didn't see the goal, but it was from range? He will be shooting on site now? More than he already was?
