Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morningโ€™s deadline. Weโ€™ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughesโ€™ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the Rโ€™s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknappโ€™s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his managerโ€™s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last weekโ€™s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPRโ€™s season under Hughes that this was the wingerโ€™s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) heโ€™s afforded a chance to build on last weekendโ€™s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, itโ€™s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his sideโ€™s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgianโ€™s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree โ€“ 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, heโ€™s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenhamโ€™s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boasโ€™ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, heโ€™s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his sideโ€™s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinezโ€™s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasnโ€™t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwichโ€™s recent unbeaten run.

I just decided not to do Rooney for a hit, and I have RVP. I think the investment makes no sense. It looks really cool, and it might get great points sometimes, but lots of strikers get great points, and the question is whether you can justify the cost of three big-hitter midfielders for the two MUN strikers, who might share points. All it take is a couple of poor MUN matches for this to go terribly wrong.

I've been reluctant to judge ...unreal as 'quality' or 'not' ... but the *issue which should not be named* on this forum has revealed what - I believe - is an introspective and developed personality. In short, I've gained true respect for Unreal that I hadn't had before.

I'm sure he, as well as others, have no concern for my opinion, but it is what it is.

    OK, about the US shooting:

    (a) Of course we should talk about it if we want to. We talk about all kinds of things; this site is for people who love fantasy football to talk about stuff, not just to talk about fantasy football.
    (b) I am from the states (don't live there now) and have always been and continue to be shocked by these shootings. Not shocked because I don't get the relevance of slack gun laws--I hate how easy it is to get guns there--but shocked because I don't think ease-of-access explains the phenomenon.
    (c) Nothing about the 2nd amendment should stop good gun regulation: other amendmends (eg, the 1st, about speech) are non-absolute in the sense that speech can be regulated, just not prohibited, so the amendment itself in no way prevents stronger regulation.
    (d) the gun problem in the US is a matter of political will, so shockingly and sadly it is about people witnessing these things and continuing to say "people kill people, guns don't kill people".
    (e) there is something else going on here. It isn't just availability of guns. It is a culture of violence and of glorifying (at the same time as we condemn) outrageously violent acts.
    (f) this discussion should take account of the prevailing culture of the coolness of violence.

The right to bear arms is one of the basic laws. It was meant so the people always have power over the government. I think we have power of the government without weapons personally, it needs to go, especially with depression on the rise.

The thing is that getting rid of the amendment is not going to happen. It is a red herring. Nothing in its wording or the jurisprudence of these "basic laws" (ie, the other forst 10 amendments) suggests that the right means no regulation of guns. As I said, it is just a matter of political will. If the US lawmakers got enough pressure from the public to make it worth their while to snub the gun lobby, then more and better regulation would follow. That is a lot more likely than repeal of the 2nd amendment.

Absolutely. People are too quick to dismiss the easy access to guns over there. I know for example most drugs are illegal and that doesn't stop people taking them so why would banning firearms make any difference but measures need to be taken that prevent people from buying weapons online, background checks, mental health assessments would all be steps in the right direction as opposed to this broken system that is costing the lives of so many.

If you believe rumours then Sterling may not play. Bale and Enrique are unlikely also, and Clyne no way. Other than that great! ๐Ÿ˜‰

yeahyeah aware of this ๐Ÿ˜‰ Always set up just incase players miraculously make it , in this case Bale. Don't believe this BS about Sterling, he will play, just please don't 100% hold me to this

Yep, not done me bad so far. Away at Stoke I am not convinced, I know he's been somewhat fixture proof this season but think it's right move. 98% chance Bale is out anyway so he'll come in

Seeing you might be playing 323 this week, saving a transfer isn't a great idea.

I was hoping the scout picks would give me some clarity in my Suarez vs Defoe question.

    No such luck.

Never really asked for advice before but I'm in a bit of a pickle atm, so would appreciate any thoughts!

    Current team

    Bunn bego
    Enrique nelson davies shorey cameron
    Bale walcott Sterling Michu sess
    Fletch rvp berba

    1 free 6.4 in bank

I have the obvious hangover from the double gameweek, fletch and sess will play because of other priorities.
    Bale, enrique,walcott, Sterling doubtful.

I was/still am hoping to save a transfer this week but I doubt I will field 11.
